The winter storm warning will begin at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and continue through noon on Wednesday for all or portions of Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Beaufort, Colleton, Jasper, Hampton and Allendale Counties.

Williamsburg and Georgetown Counties, meanwhile, will be under a winter storm watch from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning.

Heavy snow is expected with up to two inches of accumulation possible.

Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and dangerous. Plan on slippery road conditions that could affect the Tuesday night and Wednesday morning commutes.

There is an enhanced risk for sleet along the lower South Carolina coastal counties, especially inland of U.S. Highway 17.

Live 5 First Alert Meteorologist Joey Sovine says the first winter precipitation will move in after 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The heaviest snow will be expected late Tuesday night into the overnight hours.

Most of the precipitation will move out by about 2 a.m. on Wednesday when the low temperature is expected to be around 22.

Computer models are predicting up to two inches of snow, but the European model predicts up to twice that amount. Sovine says that model is also counting any precipitation that might fall as sleet, not just snow, however.

Any effects on travel could be felt starting Tuesday afternoon, Live 5 First Alert Chief Meteorologist Bill Walsh says. The storm could produce treacherous road conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Very cold temperatures Wednesday night could result in refreezing and black ice formation.

Cold weather advisory in effect through Wednesday morning

The cold weather advisory is in effect through 6 a.m. on Wednesday and includes Charleston, Dorchester and Colleton Counties along with portions of Berkeley, Beaufort, Hampton, Jasper and Allendale Counties.

Wind chills are expected to drop to 15 to 20 degrees overnight Monday and to 10 to 15 degrees above zero both Tuesday night and Wednesday night.

Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure.

Forecasts call for an unusually long period of bitterly cold weather. Daytime highs will only warm into the 30s both Tuesday and Wednesday with overnight lows dropping into the teens to lower 20s.

Be sure to take protective actions to prepare both your home and business as well as yourself for this period of very cold weather.

The Live 5 Weather team declared Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as First Alert Weather Days because of the chances that parts of the Lowcountry could see wintry weather.
