It’s time to wrap up the first round at the 2025 WTA Singapore Tennis Open on Day 2. Xiyu Wang and Xinyu Wang will both be taking the court, while last week’s ITF Bangalore champion Tatjana Maria tries to keep going against Yulia Starodubtseva. Renata Zarazua vs Hailey Baptiste

Head-to-head: Zarazua 2-0

Renata Zarazua won their two meetings back in 2021, but they don’t have to be all that relevant considering Hailey Baptiste was just 19 at the time. Even with the Mexican more or less at the peak of her career right now, her game isn’t that threatening and mostly relies on consistency. The indoor conditions could open up some possibilities for Baptiste here and if she can put the pressure on, she’ll be the one leading the way.

Maria Timofeeva vs Xiyu Wang

Head-to-head: First meeting

Maria Timofeeva made it into the main draw as a lucky loser after Amanda Anisimova withdrew. Her career certainly hasn’t exploded the way some would have thought after the title in Budapest or the Australian Open run and the Russian is now sitting barely outside the Top 250 in the WTA Rankings. Xiyu Wang isn’t too consistent, but the Chinese left-hander once made a strong run indoor run in Cluj and should have the weaponry to dictate in this matchup.

Yulia Starodubtseva vs Tatjana Maria

Head-to-head: First meeting

Tatjana Maria is 37 years young and even last week, she took apart a pretty strong field at an ITF event in Singapore. It’s tough to say how much she’ll have left in the tank as the last two matches (against Leolia Jeanjean and Linda Fruhvirtova) were both quite taxing. But her slice-and-dice game fits indoor courts well and she’s won many titles under the roof over the years. Maybe she’s got at least one more strong performance in her this week, especially as Yulia Starodubtseva basically stopped winning after her Beijing run last year.

Rebecca Marino vs Xinyu Wang

Head-to-head: First meeting

Rebecca Marino remains a dangerous veteran on her day and almost knocked out Katie Boulter in the Australian Open opening round. There’s no denying that the Canadian’s power can be tough to handle and Xinyu Wang will not have it all her way in this one. The Chinese would usually be the favorite here, but she hasn’t played indoors in a few years. Maybe it’s the perfect spot for Marino to create an upset, especially after ripping through the draws in stacked indoor fields in Calgary and Midland at the end of last year.
