  • Punxsutawney Phil to emerge with his annual prediction about the end of winter

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) — Punxsutawney Phil’s team of top-hatted associates will issue the woodchuck’s weather verdict as the sun rises on Sunday, telling the world whether he is predicting wintry conditions for the next six weeks or the relief of an early spring.

The annual ritual goes back more than a century in western Pennsylvania, with far older roots in European folklore, but it took Bill Murray’s 1993 “Groundhog Day” movie to transform the event into what it is today, with tens of thousands of revelers at the scene and imitators scattered around the United States and beyond.

Last year’s crowd may have been a record and organizers braced for a similar turnout on Sunday.

If the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club members declare Phil did not see his shadow, that is said to usher in an early spring. If he does see it, it’s six more weeks of winter, although what that means can be subjective.

Phil has predicted a longer winter far more often than an early spring, and one effort to track his accuracy concluded he was right less than half the time.

Tom Dunkel, president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, says there are two types of people who make the trek to Gobbler’s Knob: the faithful seeking to validate their beliefs and the doubters who want to confirm their skepticism.

Phil communicates his forecast through “Groundhog-ese” with the help of a special cane that Dunkel has inherited as the club’s leader. It’s not as if he speaks in English words.

“He’ll like wink, he’ll purr, he’ll chatter, he’ll — you know — nod,” Dunkel said.

Attendance is free but it costs $5 to take a bus and avoid a 1 mile (1.6 kilometer) trek from the middle of town to the stage where the prediction is made, some 80 miles (123 kilometers) northeast of Pittsburgh. The need for so many buses is why the local schools, where the sports mascot is the Chucks, close when Groundhog Day falls on a weekday.

Jon Lovitch was in Punxsutawney with family members for the event. The self-employed gingerbread artist from New York has attended Groundhog Day for 33 years.

“I like the cold, you know, and this is probably the best and biggest midwinter party in the entire world,” Lovitch said. “And it’s just a really good time.”

Keith Post, his wife and a friend have watched the “Groundhog Day” movie in each of the past five years and decided this was the time to make the trip from Ohio to witness the event.

“We booked rooms almost a year in advance and we’re here,” Post said. “We’re doing it.”

A new welcome center opened four years ago and the club is working on an elaborate second living space for Phil and family so they can split time between Gobbler’s Knob and Phil’s longtime home at the town library. The club also is putting up large video screens and more powerful speakers this year to help attendees in the back of the crowd follow the proceedings.

“It’s a holiday where you don’t really owe anyone anything,” said A.J. Dereume, who among the club’s 15-member inner circle serves as Phil’s handler. “You’re grasping onto the belief, you know, in something that’s just fun to believe in.”

Jackie Handley agreed a year ago to visit Punxsutawney for the first time to help a friend check off an item on their bucket list. They were bracing for subfreezing temperatures.

“I think it’s going to be really fun,” said Handley, who lives in Falls Church, Virginia. “It’s once in a lifetime — we’re probably not going to come back. And we have tons of warm clothes.”

Phil has a wife, Punxsutawney Phyllis, and two pups born this spring, Shadow and Sunny, although his family won’t join him on stage for the big event. The groundhog family eats fruits and vegetables, get daily visits from Dereume and see a veterinarian at least once a year.

The club’s lore is that Phil is the same woodchuck who has been issuing weather forecasts for the past century, thanks to an “elixir of life” that keeps him immortal.

“There’s only one Phil, and it’s not something that can be handed down,” Dunkel said. “Just like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, there’s only one.”

Groundhog Day celebrations, formal and informal, are being held in many Pennsylvania towns and elsewhere on Sunday. There have been Groundhog Day events in at least 28 U.S. states and Canadian provinces.

Vejpongsa reported from Punxsutawney. Scolforo reported from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Get ready to grab your winter coat or start planning your spring wardrobe, because Punxsutawney Phil is about to make his annual prediction about the end of winter! The famous groundhog will emerge from his burrow in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on February 2nd to let us know if we can expect six more weeks of winter or an early spring.

Will Phil see his shadow and retreat back into his burrow, signaling six more weeks of cold weather? Or will he stay out and predict an early spring? Whatever the outcome, the tradition of Groundhog Day is a fun and lighthearted way to mark the changing seasons.

So keep an eye out for Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction this Groundhog Day, and get ready for whatever weather lies ahead!

  • Live updates: 76th annual Reese’s Senior Bowl

    FIRST QUARTER

The Nationals won the toss, chose to take the football and got right down to business by moving 67 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown. Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon II had four carries for 17 yards in the drive, but his big play was a 32-yard halfback pass for a touchdown to Iowa State tight end with 9:48 left in the first quarter. Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel then tossed a conversion pass to Miami (Fla.) tight end Elijah Arroyo to give the Nationals a 7-0 lead. Gabriel had two first-down completions on the drive – to Higgins and Southern Cal running back Woody Marks. NATIONAL 8, AMERICAN 0

    PREGAME

The 76th annual Reese’s Senior Bowl will kick off at 1:30 p.m. CST Saturday with a temperature in the mid 60s and virtually no breeze at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile. NFL Network is televising the game.

The all-stars are divided into American and National teams. The Nationals are wearing white jerseys and pants with two orange stripes bordering a blue stripe on the shoulders and down the legs. The Americans are wearing orange jerseys and gray pants with red, white and blue stripes on the shoulders and down the legs.

Each helmet bears a sticker with the No. 7 in tiger stripes in memory of Princeton standout Tiger Bech, who was killed in the New Year’s Eve terrorist attack in New Orleans. His brother, TCU wide receiver Jack Bech, is on the American team.

The American is the home team, at least in makeup. Twenty-five of the American’s players are from the SEC. The Americans also have all 14 of the all-stars on the game-day roster who played at Alabama high schools and colleges:

  • Why are we so excited for the second annual Minnesota Yacht Club music fest?

“Too Sweet” hitmaker Hozier, slated for opening night, remains as hot as out-of-the-fryer mini-donuts, and the demand to see him hasn’t diminished. Green Day, the festival closer, is one of the all-time great live bands, and its hyperkinetic frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is invariably extra-amped (if that’s even possible for him) when he takes the stage in the Twin Cities, hometown for his wife, Adrienne, whom he met here. Even though Billie and the boys rocked Minneapolis stadiums last year and in 2021, we’re always glad to see Green Day.

Fall Out Boy, not so much. Especially since these Day 2 headliners will have played the metro area in four of the past five years, including the last three consecutively.

The MYC 2025 undercards suggest that not all these artists are “warm-up” acts. Opening day on July 18 is particularly compelling with soulful rockers Alabama Shakes, quirky but cult-loved Father John Misty and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Sheryl Crow, an inspiring and underappreciated concertizer — all she wants to do is have some fun.

The middle day — easily the least engrossing lineup — boasts a couple of winners on its undercard in Gen X alt-rockers Weezer, who are as comfortable as an old sweater, and Minnesota’s own Cory Wong, who always puts on a spirited, entertaining show of instrumental jazz-funk.

The final day, the Green Day day, features a delectable mix of top-notch melodic rock bands Semisonic and Beach Bunny, along with party bands 311 and Sublime as well as Garbage, the magnificent modern rockers from Madison, Wis., whose singer Shirley Manson always remembers that they played their first concert ever in Minneapolis at the 7th Street Entry in 1995.

Overall, we’re pretty thrilled about this lineup. OK, there are a few slots where we’re we might go sit by the banks of the Mississippi River for a break and an overpriced beer. But it looks like the Twin Cities have finally landed a bona fide destination summer music festival just like Austin City Limits in Texas and Outside Lands in San Francisco. We’re not massive like Coachella or Lollapalooza. That’s fine. We don’t have the space for it.

Are you ready to set sail on a musical adventure like no other? The second annual Minnesota Yacht Club music fest is just around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited!

Last year’s inaugural event was a huge success, with top-notch performances from both local and national artists, breathtaking views of the lake, and an atmosphere that can only be described as electric. This year promises to be even bigger and better, with an incredible lineup of musicians, food vendors, and activities for all ages.

Whether you’re a music lover, a foodie, or just looking for a fun day out on the water, the Minnesota Yacht Club music fest has something for everyone. So grab your tickets, pack your sunscreen, and get ready to dance the day away with us on the lake. We can’t wait to see you there! #MYCmusicfest #sailintosummer

  • Energized House Republicans look to Trump for guidance at annual policy retreat

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump is expected to rally House Republicans Monday at their annual policy retreat as they look to make progress on tax cuts, border security and other conservative priorities.

House Republicans are holding their annual policy retreat at Trump National Doral Miami, a posh resort with four golf courses and a ballroom named after the president. They are trying to find consensus on a spending bill before a March 14 deadline and secondly on a budget blueprint that would set the stage for passing a filibuster-proof tax, energy and border security bill later this year.

It’s a daunting task, with Speaker Mike Johnson setting the first week of February for the House Budget Committee to pass a budget blueprint that is key to the whole process.

Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.

“That will be where the lion’s share of these campaign promises we made are fulfilled,” Johnson said. “And that’s what all the hard work here is, in the room with all of us negotiating and coming to consensus.”

Political capital is almost always at its peak at the start of a new presidential term, even more so because this is Trump’s second and he is prevented under the Constitution from a third. Moving swiftly is all the more important because the GOP majorities are slim, particularly in the House.

Johnson is trying to lump many of the GOP priorities into one massive catch-all bill that Senate Democrats cannot filibuster, but many Republican senators think it would be better to do two bills — the first focused on border security and defense, and the second on extending and expanding upon the tax cuts passed in Trump’s first term.

Republicans are eyeing potential changes to key safety net programs, such as work requirements for those participating in Medicaid, to help offset the cost of enacting their priorities.

House Republicans said they expect more specifics to be announced after the retreat on where they are headed.

Until then, they were highlighting Trump’s first week in office, particularly reveling in the showdown that Trump had with Columbia this past weekend over accepting flights of deported migrants from the U.S.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that Columbia agreed to all of Trump’s terms, “including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returned from the United States, including on U.S. military aircraft, without limitation or delay.”

“Think about it, President Trump, I don’t even think had finished the front nine before he successfully forced the Columbian president to take back their illegal immigrants,” said Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich. “The days of America being walked all over are long gone thanks to President Trump.”

On the budget fight to come, Democrats are already casting it as one that would primarily benefit the wealthy at the expense of others, with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries labeling the Republican plan a “contract against America.”

“It will hurt working families, hurt the middle class, hurt our children, hurt our seniors and hurt our veterans,” Jeffries said.

Republicans are warning that if Congress does not act quickly to extend tax relief, capital will remain on the sidelines and families next year would see child tax credits and a guaranteed tax deduction greatly reduced, upping their federal tax bill.

Trump and Republican leaders are also going to have to find a way to extend the nation’s debt limit. The limit must be raised by Congress, and failure to do so risks the federal government defaulting on its debt and unable to pay all its bills.

Under President Joe Biden, Republican lawmakers sought concessions on spending before agreeing to suspending the debt ceiling, but it’s unclear how adamant they will be on deficit reduction during a Trump presidency.

At the annual policy retreat for House Republicans, there is a palpable sense of energy and excitement as lawmakers gather to strategize for the year ahead. With the midterm elections looming, the stakes are high, and members are eager to rally behind a unified message.

One key figure who is expected to play a central role in shaping the party’s agenda is former President Donald Trump. Despite no longer holding office, Trump remains a powerful force within the GOP, and many House Republicans are looking to him for guidance on key policy issues.

From immigration reform to healthcare, tax policy to national security, lawmakers are eager to hear Trump’s thoughts and receive his endorsement on their legislative priorities. With Trump’s loyal base of supporters still a major force within the party, his influence is undeniable.

As House Republicans huddle together to chart their course for the coming months, there is a sense of optimism and determination in the air. With Trump’s guidance, they hope to harness this energy and momentum to achieve their goals and secure victories in the upcoming elections.

New York, New York – Wednesday, January 22, 2025 – GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, today announced the nominees of the 36th GLAAD Media Awards. In a time of unprecedented challenges for LGBTQ people, LGBTQ stories are the antidote to anti-LGBTQ violence, legislation and disinformation.

GLAAD’s mission to accelerate acceptance and understanding for LGBTQ people through visibility in media stands stronger than ever, with the 36th GLAAD Media Awards spotlighting 303 culture-changing nominees across 33 categories, honoring outstanding fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues in film, television, gaming, publishing, stage productions, music, podcasting, journalism, and more.

Since 1990, the GLAAD Media Awards have grown to be the most visible annual LGBTQ awards show in the world, sending powerful messages of acceptance to audiences globally. Nominees for the 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards reflect work published, released, or broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 2024.

GLAAD routinely reviews the accuracy and impact of GLAAD Media Awards categories to best reflect the ever-evolving media landscape, including the ways in which media is consumed by audiences and consumers alike. As such, and in recognition of the profusion of news sources in the overall media landscape, this year, GLAAD celebrates the category of Outstanding Blog being updated to Outstanding Independent Journalism. This expanded category will recognize creators and independent news organizations that drive journalism and commentary for and about LGBTQ people and issues.

A tip sheet with a breakdown of nominations by media and trends among the nominees is available HERE and at: www.glaad.org/releases.

Statement by GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis:
“The GLAAD Media Awards were created nearly four decades ago to champion LGBTQ stories amid a deeply hostile and unsafe time for our community. Today, this mission holds true and ever-more important as attacks against LGBTQ people are not only growing, but finding new avenues. Whether it’s rampant misinformation or defamation of transgender people, LGBTQ youth, or the shocking corporate rollback of policies and programs that keep LGBTQ people seen and safe in a workforce, what will always prevail is our truth and talent. This year’s nominees for the 36th GLAAD Media Awards represent the best of our vibrant community, spanning across all media, genres and mediums, and send a loud and global message to industry leaders that our stories are not only popular and entertaining, but necessary and culture-changing.”
