Stephen A. Smith Shouldn’t Have To Beg LeBron James to End Bronny James Experiment
Bronny James received some meaningful regular season minutes in Tuesday night’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, and it did not go as planned.
On Wednesday, Stephen A. Smith had to sound off on ESPN’s First Take about just how poorly Bronny played.
“I am pleading with LeBron James as a father. Stop this. We all know Bronny James is in the NBA because of his dad,” Smith said.
Bronny played 15 minutes in Tuesday’s loss, was 0-for-5 from the field, had three rebounds and an assist that was good for a -8 rating in the box score. After the game, he told reporters that he was surprised by getting real minutes in the first quarter, and head coach JJ Redick apologized, stating that he put Bronny in a very tough spot.
But Smith’s rant on this entire saga was perfect. The Los Angeles Lakers gave the sports world and the James family an incredible moment on NBA Opening Night when Bronny and LeBron became the first father and son duo in NBA history.
But this has become the most-discussed second-round pick in the history of the sport. Bronny was selected No. 55 overall. It’s wildly unfair to expect him to contribute meaningful minutes to any NBA roster, let alone the Lakers, who are eyeing a playoff spot in the Western Conference.
There’s no need for him to be on this stage, regardless of how banged up or undermanned the Lakers might be.
ESPN’s top basketball talker should not have to be forced to get on his show and break down in gruesome detail just how bad the No. 55 overall pick is playing because it’s to be expected.
Leave nepotism out of it for a second. We’re talking about a 20-year-old kid who did not play much college basketball, has some innate tools and traits of a good basketball player, but is a complete project that needs time to develop. But because of his last name—and because of who his dad is—top sports talk personalities are forced to talk about him after every single failed outing. It’s unfair to everybody involved.
It’s clear that he needs to develop—and that was happening with a few good performances strung together in the G League with South Bay.
Let Bronny develop. At this point, there are countless G League success stories of players that were not ready to play in the Association right away, but when their time came, they were ready to be everyday NBA contributors.
Right now, Bronny playing meaningful NBA minutes is nothing more than a gimmick and it’s a little bit sad. Sure, he worked tremendously hard. We’ve seen that he has all of the tools required to be an elite player in the G League, even as a rookie.
Allow him to continue his development down there, out of the spotlight, and one day he could be playing meaningful NBA minutes as a contributor.
Stephen A. Smith Shouldn’t Have To Beg LeBron James to End Bronny James ExperimentIn a recent episode of ESPN’s “First Take,” Stephen A. Smith made a plea to LeBron James to end the controversial Bronny James experiment. The experiment involves LeBron’s son, Bronny James, playing high school basketball while constantly being under the spotlight and scrutiny of the media and fans.
Smith argued that Bronny James should be allowed to grow and develop as a player without the added pressure of living up to his father’s legacy. He believes that LeBron should prioritize his son’s well-being and future over his own desire to see him succeed in the spotlight.
While LeBron has been supportive of Bronny’s basketball career, Smith believes that it’s time for him to step in and protect his son from the excessive attention and pressure that comes with being the son of an NBA legend.
It’s clear that Stephen A. Smith is passionate about this issue and he shouldn’t have to beg LeBron James to do what’s best for his son. Let’s hope that LeBron listens to Smith’s plea and makes the right decision for Bronny’s future.

Bronny James plays the entire 4th quarter and scores 5 points, including a 3-point play for the 2nd bucket of his NBA career.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Even on the road, Bronny James was quite a crowd favorite.
Fans in Washington chanted for LeBron James’ son early and often, and with the Los Angeles Lakers way ahead of the Wizards on Thursday night, the younger James played the entire fourth quarter of his team’s 134-96 victory.
Bronny James scored a career-high five points. He shot only 1-for-6 from the field, but he made a driving layup while being fouled and converted the free throw for a three-point play.

“He did a lot of really good things tonight. I thought he made a couple really nice passes,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “Defensively he was great. It’s building blocks for every young player, and I think tonight was a good, positive building block for him.”
James’ night also included an air ball from 3-point range, two rebounds, two assists and two fouls. He came up with a steal and made a nice long pass to Dalton Knecht for a dunk. Shortly after his lone field goal, James drove to the basket again and lobbed an alley-oop to Christian Koloko for a dunk.
James closed out the scoring with a pair of free throws in the final seconds — and received an “MVP! MVP!” chant from the crowd.
“He’s had eyeballs on him his whole life. He’s used to it,” Redick said. “I remember not playing a lot my rookie year and second year. The Orlando fans would sometimes chant that in a blowout in the fourth quarter — ‘We want JJ’ — and it’s a weird feeling. There’s that audible sort of anticipation every time you shoot the ball. It’s a lot.
“He has handled everything with dignity, grace, class, all that stuff. He’ll continue to grow.”
Bronny James, the son of NBA legend LeBron James, received thunderous ovations from fans during the Los Angeles Lakers’ road win against the Washington Wizards. The young basketball prodigy, who is currently a junior in high school, was in attendance to support his father and the Lakers as they battled the Wizards at the Capital One Arena. Bronny was spotted sitting courtside, cheering on his dad and the team throughout the game.
As the cameras panned to Bronny in the stands, fans erupted in applause and cheers, showing their support for the budding star. The crowd’s reaction was a testament to the growing popularity and star power of the 17-year-old, who has been making waves in the basketball world with his impressive skills and potential.
Despite not being on the court, Bronny’s presence was felt and appreciated by fans, teammates, and his father, who expressed his pride and gratitude for his son’s support. The ovations and attention that Bronny received during the game only further solidified his status as a rising star in the basketball world.
As the Lakers secured a crucial road win against the Wizards, Bronny’s presence and the support he received served as a reminder of the bright future ahead for the James family and the basketball world as a whole. The ovations for Bronny were well-deserved and only added to the excitement and anticipation surrounding his promising career.

#Bronny #James #receives #big #ovations #Lakers #road #win #WashingtonESPN’s convenient Bronny James about-face shows network trying to have it two ways
The hypocrisy of ESPN now claiming disgust over Bronny James goes back most glaringly to draft day — I believe it was the second of the new two-day draft, another Adam Silver special — when its coverage tried to establish a hot market for Bronny. The network suggested on several occasions that Bronny might not be available when the Lakers chose. A Lakers reporter pulled a quote from Anthony Davis about how Bronny can “guard multiple positions” and “turn into an elite shotmaker.”
“Certainly he’s a name worth watching,” Dave McMenamin said on the broadcast. “We’re just waiting to see, like the Lakers are waiting to see, if he’ll still be available when we get to No. 55.”
Of course, the truth was always that Bronny would be drafted by the Lakers, and that he was neither ready for the NBA nor worthy of any 2024 pick. As one executive texted a few days before the draft, “If his name were Joe Thomas, we wouldn’t be talking about him. I don’t really see it right now. If he had another two years in college, it might be different but not sure.”
Bronny James was taken by the Lakers on Day 2 of the 2024 NBA Draft. NBAE via Getty Images Still, ESPN built their entire draft coverage around a forgone nepotism pick, and now, over seven months later, tried to present Bronny’s struggles as both predictable and an indictment on LeBron’s parenting.
ESPN’s convenient Bronny James about-face: A network trying to have it two waysIn the world of sports media, it seems like everyone is always trying to have it both ways. And nowhere is this more evident than in the case of Bronny James, the teenage son of NBA superstar LeBron James.
When Bronny first burst onto the scene as a promising young basketball player, ESPN was quick to jump on the bandwagon, hyping up his every move and treating him like the next big thing. But as soon as Bronny started to face some challenges on the court, the network seemed just as quick to distance itself from him, seemingly abandoning him in favor of other, more successful athletes.
But now, in a stunning about-face, ESPN seems to be back on the Bronny bandwagon, once again hyping up his potential and acting like he’s the next big thing. It’s a convenient change of heart that has left many fans scratching their heads and wondering just what the network’s true intentions are.
Is ESPN genuine in its support of Bronny James, or is it just trying to have it both ways, using him when it’s convenient and discarding him when it’s not? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: the network’s handling of the young basketball star has left a bad taste in the mouths of many sports fans.

Bronny struggles in extended Lakers run; ‘put him in a tough spot,’ says Redick
PHILADELPHIA — Lakers coach JJ Redick second-guessed his decision to insert rookie Bronny James into his rotation in Los Angeles’ 118-104 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday.
“Maybe put him in a tough spot,” Redick said after James went 0-for-5 with three turnovers in 15 minutes. “Flying up yesterday, nationally televised game in Philly and all that stuff. He didn’t play well, but he’s been playing great in the stay-ready games, and he’s been playing great in the G [League].”
James was on assignment with the South Bay Lakers, L.A.’s G League affiliate, when the Lakers recalled him Monday to join them in the middle of their five-game road trip.
The Lakers’ No. 55 pick in the second round in June, the eldest son of star LeBron James, had not played meaningful minutes for L.A. since opening night when the James family became the first father-son duo in NBA history to play in a game together.
With backup Gabe Vincent (left knee) sidelined the past two games, Redick gave Bronny a shot in the first quarter against Philadelphia with L.A. up 17-9.
“Just felt like on a back-to-back, just him giving us energy, I think, was the goal,” Redick said. “I have confidence in him, but obviously didn’t provide that at a high level.”
The 6-foot-2 guard struggled immediately, with the Sixers’ Tyrese Maxey (43 points) attacking him defensively to score and then turning it over on a bad pass to Anthony Davis on offense, leading to a transition dunk for Guerschon Yabusele.
“He’s a fast guard,” Bronny said of Maxey. “Amazing touch. Can shoot it. I was trying to stand my ground. Just trying to play as hard as I can and bring as much energy as I can. That’s all.”
He added that the call-up to the Lakers, a few days after scoring a season-high 31 points in the G League, caught him off guard.
“It just came out of nowhere, so I was always trying to stay ready to play and always keeping my mind right,” he said.
Despite the rough night, Bronny still cited growth since opening night when he closed out the second quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves with his dad.
“I feel like I’m a whole lot more prepared now,” he said. “Again, just coming out and staying ready after the G League stint and the season being down the road a little bit more, just staying ready. And coming in, playing smart.”
LeBron said his son’s growth will continue with more opportunities.
“Obviously, it’s his first extensive minutes with us,” LeBron said. “We had that first game where it was just a moment — and that was a great moment. But tonight was his first opportunity to be with the big guys, be with the big club, and he’s going to continue to use that and get better and better.”
Bronny James, the son of NBA legend LeBron James, has been facing challenges during his extended run with the Los Angeles Lakers. Veteran guard JJ Redick recently commented on Bronny’s struggles, saying that the young player has been put in a tough spot due to the high expectations and scrutiny that come with being part of a famous basketball family.Bronny, who is currently a member of the Lakers’ G League affiliate team, has been working hard to make a name for himself in the basketball world. However, with the added pressure of being LeBron James’ son, the 17-year-old has been facing criticism and comparisons to his father.
Redick, who has been following Bronny’s journey closely, expressed empathy for the young player and acknowledged the challenges he faces. “It’s not easy being in Bronny’s shoes. The spotlight is always on him, and people are quick to judge his every move. He’s a talented player with a bright future, but he’s still learning and growing,” Redick said.
Despite the difficulties, Bronny remains determined to prove himself and carve out his own path in the basketball world. With the support of his family, teammates, and fans, he continues to work hard and improve his game.
As Bronny navigates the ups and downs of his basketball career, it is clear that he has the potential to make a name for himself beyond just being LeBron James’ son. With time and experience, he will undoubtedly overcome these challenges and emerge as a successful player in his own right.

Bronny James shows dad LeBron, Lakers he has plenty to learn in return from G League
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bronny James got the surprise call to play in the first quarter for the Lakers and finished with the first serious playing time of his NBA career.
It wasn’t great.
Bronny took off on a fast break and his shot was rejected by Adam Bona.
He got torched by 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey any time they were remotely matched up.
His box score, well, it wasn’t any better: Bronny was scoreless for the Lakers in their 118-104 loss to Philadelphia on Tuesday night. He missed three 3-pointers, all five shots overall and had three turnovers.
Bronny played 15 minutes just four days after he dropped a career-high 31 points for the South Bay Lakers of the G League.
“Maybe put him in a tough spot, flying out yesterday, nationally televised game and all that stuff,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “He didn’t play well. But he’s been playing great in the stay-ready games and he’s been playing great in the G. I have confidence but obviously didn’t provide that at a high level.”
Dad knows Bronny still has plenty to learn in the NBA.
“He was able to get behind the defense on one and find Jaxson (Hayes) for a dunk. That was good,” LeBron James said. “Obviously missed his shots. It’s just about him just getting more and more comfortable. It’s his first extensive minutes with us. We had that first game where it was just a moment, and it was a great moment, but tonight was his first opportunity to be with the big guys, the big club. He’s going to continue to use that to get better and better, just like the first time he played with the G League.”
LeBron and Bronny made NBA history on Oct. 22 when they became the first father and son to play together during the Lakers’ season-opening win over Minnesota. Bronny then scored his first NBA basket for the Lakers in Cleveland on Oct. 30 at the arena where he watched his father as a child.
Bronny had not played more than 6 minutes in any of his first 12 games and had scored four points all season.
“Just bringing energy. My coaches are telling me to come in and play smart, play my game and play for my teammates,” he said. “Just trying to do the right thing as a rookie is my main priority.”
LeBron and the Lakers have already said Bronny will spend ample time this season with their G League affiliate as he works on his game.
“Just reps is the biggest thing for me,” Bronny said.
LeBron had 31 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, though father and son did share one other distinction against the 76ers: Bona blocked them both.
The Lakers had been 16-2 this season against teams with losing records and seemed poised to build on the win column playing a 76ers team without injured stars Joel Embiid and Paul George. Maxey carried the scoring load with 43 points and the Lakers were hampered when Anthony Davis left in the first half with an abdominal muscle strain.
Davis walked to the locker room with his right hand over his stomach when he left with 2:10 to go in the first quarter. Davis had four points in 10 minutes before he was hurt. He had 42 points and 23 rebounds a night earlier in a victory at Charlotte.
“I mean, when our best player goes out, it’s always challenging,” James said. “When AD goes down, when any one of our guys go down throughout the course of the game, it’s just tough.”
Without Davis, it was a rough one for the Lakers, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.
“Three in four nights, back-to-back, I’m not sure where our collective brains were at,” Redick said.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick appears to be shaking things up as their backup point guard, Gabe Vincent, is out for the second night in a row.
It’s unclear how big of a role James will play tonight.
James’ time in the NBA has been uneventful so far.
In the NBA, James is averaging 0.4 points per game, 0.2 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.1 blocks, and 0.2 steals in 2.3 minutes of action. On top of that, he is shooting 10 percent from the field.
His time in the G League has been vastly different. In seven games played with the South Bay Lakers, he is averaging 13.4 points per game, 3.,4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.7 blocks while shooting 36.6 percent from the field and 21.2 percent from three in 26.9 minutes of action.
It is clear that James still has a long way to go to be a reliable player in the NBA, even if that is off the bench. The Lakers and many knew that as he decided to take his talents to the next level after one season at USC.

Lakers’ LeBron James, Bronny James reportedly turned down Skills Challenge invite
LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, turned down the chance to make history again. The two declined to compete in the 2025 Kia Skills Challenge at NBA All-Star weekend, according to league insider Chris Haynes. They would’ve been the first father-son duo to compete in the Skills Challenge.
The report also noted that the younger James did not accept an invitation to join the Rising Stars team as a G League player. San Francisco, home of the Golden State Warriors, will host this year’s NBA All-Star weekend.
‘It was a special moment’ — Magic Johnson shares his thoughts on LeBron & Bronny James playing together for the first time
The Jameses first made history in the Lakers’ season opener, the first time that a father and son played together in the same NBA game.
Los Angeles selected Bronny James with the No. 55 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft out of USC. He has appeared in 11 NBA games this season, averaging just 2.3 minutes. He has been up and down between the Los Angeles Lakers and their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers.

In seven G League games, the younger James has played 26.9 minutes per contest and averaged 13.4 points, 3.9 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game, while shooting 36.6/21.2/66.7.
Meanwhile, the 40-year-old James is averaging 23.7 points, 9.0 assists and 7.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 51.3/39.8/76.3. He was named an All-Star for a record 21st time Thursday.
The Lakers entered their Thursday night matchup against the Boston Celtics at 23-18, good for the fifth seed in the Western Conference.

According to recent reports, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, have both declined invitations to participate in the NBA All-Star Skills Challenge. While LeBron has previously participated in the event and has showcased his impressive dribbling and passing skills, it seems that he has chosen to focus on resting and preparing for the second half of the NBA season.
As for Bronny, the talented high school basketball player has decided to prioritize his high school team and upcoming games over participating in the Skills Challenge.
Although fans would have loved to see the father-son duo compete in the event, it’s understandable that they have chosen to prioritize other commitments. We can only hope to see them showcase their skills on the court in other ways in the future.

#Lakers #LeBron #James #Bronny #James #reportedly #turned #Skills #Challenge #inviteLeBron, Bronny James turn down chance to compete together at 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend, per report
There will be no on-court father-son moment between LeBron James and Bronny James at NBA All-Star Weekend this year. LeBron and Bronny were extended an invite to compete in the Skills Challenge, but the father-son Lakers pair declined, according to Chris Haynes. Bronny also received an invite to be one of the G League players to compete in the Rising Stars Challenge, to which he also turned down.
It’s unclear why the James duo declined to participate, but had they accepted they would’e been the first father-son duo to compete in the Skills Challenge, which is set to be part of All-Star Saturday Night festivities on Feb. 15.
LeBron has never competed in an event on All-Star Saturday Night, despite the many public pleas from fans and media members alike for him to participate in the dunk contest. He toyed with the idea early on in his career, most notably saying in 2009 that he was “preliminarily putting [his] name in the 2010 dunk contest.” That never happened, and in 2023 LeBron revealed that it was “never something [he] wanted to accomplish” in his career.
Not only will we presumably never see LeBron in the dunk contest, but with this declined invitation of the Skills Challenge, he’ll likely retire without us ever seeing him compete in any of the All-Star events on Saturday night.
For Bronny, it’s rather surprising that he wouldn’t take up the offer for at least the Rising Stars Challenge, especially given the revamped format could’ve given us a potential father-son matchup during the All-Star Game. The league announced a complete overhaul in how the All-Star Game will work, where the 24 All-Stars will be split into three, eight-player teams. They’ll play a mini tournament that will also feature the winning team from the Rising Stars Challenge.
Had Bronny been part of the winning Rising Stars team, and if LeBron’s All-Star team won as well, they could’ve faced off in a championship game. That would’ve certainly been must-watch television. Sadly, though, it appears as though we’ll be deprived of that entertainment.
LeBron and Bronny made NBA history by sharing the court together in the Lakers season opener against the Timberwolves in October, becoming the league’s first father-son duo to play together. Bronny, a second-round pick in last June’s NBA Draft, has played in 11 games for the Lakers so far this season, scoring four points while making just one of his 10 field-goal attempts. Bronny has averaged 14.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game with the South Bay Lakers, the team’s G League affiliate.
LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, have reportedly turned down the chance to compete together at the 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend. According to sources, both father and son decided that they wanted to focus on their individual careers and not overshadow each other.Despite the excitement and anticipation surrounding the potential matchup between the two basketball phenoms, LeBron and Bronny ultimately felt that it was best for them to continue pursuing their own paths in the NBA.
Fans may be disappointed by this news, but it is clear that both LeBron and Bronny have their sights set on achieving greatness in their own right. It will be interesting to see how their careers unfold in the years to come.

Los Angeles Lakers rookie guard Bronny James has made a minimal impact on the court in his first year, but he’s reportedly brought value to the team off of it.
Dan Woike of the L.A. Times reported during an appearance on Buha’s Block that James’ locker room presence has been appreciated by the Lakers despite him being the 15th man on the roster.
“He is great in the locker room, people really like him, he works hard,” Woike said around the 1:07:55 mark.
The 2024 second-round pick is still early in his development, but that hasn’t stopped him from drawing attention throughout the year, especially considering he’s the son of Lakers star forward LeBron James.
Woike called it a “weird-ass situation” where the opposing crowd at Tuesday’s game against the Washington Wizards began chanting “We want Bronny” as early as the third quarter while the Lakers were on their way to a blowout win. When the Wizards responded with an 8-0 run, fans were openly disappointed rather than rooting for their home team.
The 20-year-old eventually saw two minutes of action toward the end of the game and missed his lone shot attempt, though he recorded a rebound and a steal as the Lakers went on to win 111-88.
Los Angeles (23-18) will face a tougher test on Thursday night when it meets the Boston Celtics (31-13) on Thursday night on TNT at 10 p.m. ET, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if James spends the game cheering on his teammates from the sideline.
In a recent interview with an NBA insider, it was revealed that Bronny James, the son of NBA legend LeBron James, has been making a positive impression in the Los Angeles Lakers locker room. According to the insider, Bronny has been great in the locker room and people really like him. This news comes as no surprise, as Bronny has been known for his maturity and professionalism both on and off the court. Despite being just a teenager, he has shown a level of maturity and poise that has impressed his teammates and coaches.
Bronny’s presence in the Lakers locker room has been a breath of fresh air, bringing a positive energy and camaraderie to the team. His work ethic and dedication to the game have also been noted, with many praising his commitment to improving and being a team player.
As Bronny continues to grow and develop as a player, it’s clear that he has the potential to make a significant impact in the NBA. With his talent, work ethic, and positive attitude, it’s no wonder that people are really starting to like him in the Lakers locker room.
