Washington Capitals Trade Tiers Leading Up To 2025 NHL Trade Deadline
After the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, and Chicago Blackhawks got the ball rolling with a blockbuster deal, teams across the NHL have begun making roster moves with the trade deadline approaching on Friday, March 7 at 3 PM ET.
NoVa Caps ranks the possibility of players and other assets being moved by the Washington Capitals, who could be big buyers as they currently lead the NHL with a 34-11-5 record this season and want to give captain Alex Ovechkin a shot at a second Stanley Cup before his contract expires on July 1, 2026.
** NOTE: Any player who played an NHL game this season or is currently on long-term injured reserve is included
Untouchable
- Ovechkin (two years left on contract, $9.5 million cap hit, 10-team no-movement clause) — The 39-year-old is averaging over a point-per-game (37 in 35) and leads Washington with 23 goals despite missing 16 games with a broken leg. The team is building around Ovechkin as he is 19 goals away from breaking the all-time record, so why would they trade him?
- C Dylan Strome (four, $5 million cap hit) — Strome, who will turn 28 on Trade Deadline day, is once again in the midst of a career year (15-34-49 in 51), where he has established himself as a top-line center. He is on a bargain of a contract and will be looked up to heavily in a rebuild after Ovechkin hangs up his skates.
- RW Tom Wilson (seven, $6.5 million cap hit, 14-team no-trade clause) — The 30-year-old has bounced back and is having the best season of his NHL career as he is four goals shy of his personal best (24 set in 78 games in 2021-22) and 16 points back of his career-high (52 in 2021-22). In addition to his scoring and physicality, Wilson is a huge part of the Capitals’ culture and could be the team’s next captain.
- C Connor McMichael (two, $2.1 million cap hit) — The 24-year-old is on a very team-friendly contract and has already set a career high with 36 points in 50 games. McMichael, who already tied his previous career high of 18 which was set in 80 outings last season, is part of Washington’s younger core and has cemented his place as a top-six forward this season.
- C Aliaksei Protas (five, $3.375 million cap hit) — The 24-year-old has had a breakout season as his 21 goals are ranked second on Washington and 43 points are just six behind Strome for the team lead. He has fit in beautifully in Washington’s top-six forward group and has an excellent frame at 6’6”, 225 pounds.
Staying put
- C Pierre-Luc Dubois (seven, $8.5 million cap hit, no-movement clause) — The 26-year-old has bounced back in his first season in Washington as he already has six more assists (30) and one more point than the 40 he tallied in 82 games with the Los Angeles Kings last season. His .5736 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage and .5699 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage are both the best among all Capitals to play at least 10 contests. The fit has worked out beautifully for both sides as he has also helped McMichael and Wilson take steps forward. Pucks are starting to go in for Dubois as well, meaning his numbers should improve.
- D John Carlson (two, $8 million cap hit, 10-team no-trade clause) — The 35-year-old leads Washington with an average of 23:50 per game. While his offensive production (4-27-31 in 51) has continued to decline this season, Carlson’s defensive game has improved as he leads Washington with a .542 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage and ranks sixth with a .5524 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage.
- D Jakob Chychrun (pending UFA, $4.6 million cap hit) — The 26-year-old has had a career season with 13 goals (fourth among NHL defensemen) and .717 points-per-game (33 in 46: 13th). Chychrun’s average of 20:52 per game trails only Carlson. His .4636 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage is the worst among Capitals who have played in 35 games but he has come up big offensively. Chychrun’s contract may be set to expire but both sides have expressed a desire in extending it.
- D Rasmus Sandin (five, $4.6 million cap hit) — The 24-year-old signed a long-term contract less than 11 months ago and has bounced back nicely this season, where he has notched four goals, 18 points, a +17 rating, .5009 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .5567 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .5422 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 51 games, where he has averaged 19:19 per game (fourth), 1:02 coming on the power play and 41 on the penalty kill.
- G Logan Thompson (seven, $766,667 cap hit for rest of this season, $5.8 million for next six) — The 27-year-old, who signed a long-term extension on Monday, ranks third in the NHL in wins (23) and co-leads it with a .927 save percentage in 28 games. His 2.05 goals-against average ranks second. Washington gave Thompson, who has a 8.42 goals-saved above average at five-on-five, a vote of confidence as their starting goaltender of the present and future in extending him earlier this week.
- D Matt Roy (six, $5.75 million cap hit) — While averaging 19:39 per game, including 1:47 on the penalty kill (both third), the 29-year-old has earned two goals, 12 points, a +11 rating, .471 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .49 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .5048 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 41 games. Roy is one of Washington’s best shutdown blueliners and just signed a long-term contract.
- LW Ivan Miroshnichenko (two, $950,000 cap hit) — The 20-year-old, who helped the AHL’s Hershey Bears win a Calder Cup Championship last season, has an empty-net goal and four points in 18 NHL games and eight goals and 18 points in 23 AHL contests. Miroshnichenko was picked 20th overall in the 2022 NHL Draft by Washington and has high upside. He could become a regular top-nine forward in the NHL next season.
- D Martin Fehervary (two, $2.675 million cap hit) — The 25-year-old has recorded a goal, 11 points, +9 rating, .5016 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .5063 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .5173 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 51 games, where he has averaged 19:10 per game (fifth), including a team-leading 3:06 on the penalty kill. Washington depends heavily on Fehervary defensively and he is in his prime, so the team will keep him.
- LW Ethen Frank (two, $775,000 cap hit) — The 26-year-old undrafted forward has shined in his first 10 NHL games, where he has notched three goals and four points after scoring 20 goals and 28 points in 35 AHL outings to start the season. Frank’s contract is cheap and appeared to have passed Jakub Vrana for a spot on Washington’s third-line. That may change at some point but that does not mean he will be shopped.
Preferably staying, but will listen to offers
- LW Brandon Duhaime (two, $1.85 million cap hit) — The 27-year-old has fit in well on Washington’s fourth-line with six goals, 13 points, and a .4887 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 51 outings.
- Jakub Vrana (pending UFA, $775,000 cap hit) — The 28-year-old may not be a regular in Washington’s lineup but has been productive when getting called on as he has seven goals and 11 points in 25 games. The team has praised his good attitude throughout this season and Vrana has expressed how much he loves Washington and the organization. With scoring depth being a must-have in the postseason and Vrana counting the minimum against the NHL salary cap, the Capitals will likely keep the 2018 Stanley Cup Champion, especially since they were the only team that showed interest in Vrana in unrestricted free agency last summer.
- C Michael Sgarbossa (pending UFA, $775,000 cap hit) — The 32-year-old has seven goals and 29 points in 30 AHL contests and played in just three NHL games this season but has been productive for Washington with seven goals and 15 points in 43 NHL contests since the 2020-21 season. With the Stanley Cup Playoffs approaching, you can never have too many centers.
Would take a great offer
- D Trevor Van Riemsdyk (two, $3 million cap hit) — The 33-year-old has impressed this season with 18 assists, a +19 rating, .4805 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .4871 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .5119 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 50 contests, where he has averaged 17:39 per game (sixth), including 1:42 while shorthanded (fourth). Van Riemsdyk’s contract may be a little pricey for the role he plays but he does it well.
- C Nic Dowd (pending UFA, $1.3 million cap hit) — The 34-year-old has been productive with 10 goals, 18 points, a .493 faceoff-winning percentage, and .5122 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 50 games. Dowd, whose 2:33 average penalty killing time on ice per game leads Capitals forwards, could bring a nice return with his defensive prowess and very team-friendly cap hit but will likely stay as he is critical to Washington’s shutdown line.
- G Charlie Lindgren (pending UFA, $1.1 million cap hit) — The 31-year-old has gone 11-9-3 with a .903 save percentage, 2.61 goals-against average, a shutout, and 1.57 goals-saved below average in 24 appearances. Washington showed this week that Thompson is their starting goaltender of both the present and future. While they are reportedly interested in extending Lindgren’s contract, it is not impossible to see him go as he has a bargain of a contract and Washington’s No. 2.
- LW Andrew Mangiapane (pending UFA, $5.8 million cap hit) — The 28-year-old has notched 10 goals, 17 points, and a .5345 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 50 games and has played all over the lineup. With an expensive contract and his contract set to expire, it would not be difficult to see Mangiapane go in an “all-in” deal to get a top-six winger.
- RW Taylor Raddysh (pending UFA, $1 million cap hit) — The 26-year-old has posted four goals, 18 points, and a .5434 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 50 contests in a shutdown role.
- D Dylan McIlrath (pending UFA, $775,000 cap hit) — The 32-year-old has posted two assists, +1 rating, .413 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .4808 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .4956 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 11 NHL games. Washington will likely hang onto Hershey’s captain, who has led the franchise to consecutive Calder Cups, for defensive depth and his snarl might come in handy in the postseason.
Would be open to offers on
- C Lars Eller (pending UFA, $2.45 million cap hit) — The 35-year-old, who was re-acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Washington’s 2027 third-round pick and the Chicago Blackhawks’ 2025 fifth-round pick on November 12, has recorded four goals, 10 points, a .529 faceoff-winning percentage, and .496 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 32 games since getting traded. Eller has averaged 44 seconds on the penalty kill per game (sixth among Capitals forwards). Washington could improve their third-line and Eller’s pending unrestricted free agent status makes it possible he may be moved out.
- C Hendrix Lapierre (pending RFA, $863,334 cap hit) — The 22nd overall pick from the 2020 NHL Draft, who turns 23 on February 9, recorded eight assists and a .4248 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage in 27 NHL games before getting assigned to the AHL on December 29. Lapierre, who has won two Calder Cups with the Hershey Bears, has tallied five assists in eight AHL games since getting demoted. He could be used as a trade chip to improve Washington’s top-six forward group but it is also reasonable to see how Lapierre fares in training camp next fall.
On the block
- LW Sonny Milano (two, $1.9 million cap hit) — After scoring a career-high 15 goals in 49 games last season, the 28-year-old has been limited to just three games due to a poor training camp and an upper-body injury that has sidelined him since November 6. With Frank and Vrana’s emergences this season, there is not much opportunity for Milano to crack Washington’s top-nine. With that being said, the Capitals would not get fair value back if they traded Milano today.
- D Alexander Alexeyev (pending RFA, $825,000 cap hit) — The 25-year-old, who was taken 31st overall by Washington in 2018, has notched a +4 rating, .4516 five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, .5967 five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and .5517 five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in five games. Alexeyev has not appeared in the AHL since the 2022-23 season and played in just 77 NHL games over four seasons.
IR
- C Nicklas Backstrom (pending UFA, $9.2 million cap hit)
- RW T.J. Oshie (pending UFA, $5.75 million cap hit) — Both players are unlikely to play this season. Backstrom has not suited up since October 29, 2023 due to a lingering hip injury while Oshie last played on April 28, 2024, when Washington got swept by the New York Rangers in the first round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Oshie has been recovering from a back injury.

As the 2025 NHL trade deadline approaches, the Washington Capitals find themselves in a unique position. With a mix of established veterans and promising young talent, the team has a number of different trade assets that could be moved to bolster their roster for a deep playoff run.To break down the Capitals’ potential trade assets, here are the team’s trade tiers leading up to the deadline:
Tier 1: Untouchables
At the top of the list are the Capitals’ core players who are essential to the team’s success both now and in the future. This includes stars like Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and John Carlson, who are unlikely to be moved under any circumstances.Tier 2: Valuable Assets
In this tier are players who could be moved in the right deal, but only for a significant return. This group includes players like Tom Wilson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Ilya Samsonov, who have shown their value to the team but could be expendable if the right deal presents itself.Tier 3: Trade Bait
Players in this tier are more likely to be moved before the deadline, either to clear cap space or to bring in additional talent. This group includes players like Lars Eller, Dmitry Orlov, and T.J. Oshie, who could be attractive to other teams looking to add depth for a playoff push.Tier 4: Rental Players
Finally, the Capitals also have a few players on expiring contracts who could be moved as rental players to teams looking for a short-term boost. This group includes players like Anthony Mantha, Justin Schultz, and Conor Sheary, who could be attractive targets for teams looking to add scoring or defensive depth. As the trade deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see how the Capitals navigate their trade assets and make moves to strengthen their roster for a potential playoff run. Stay tuned for updates on potential trades and acquisitions as the deadline approaches.

NHL betting preview (Jan. 30): Capitals vs. Senators odds
Join Daily Faceoff’s Andy MacNeil as he handicaps Thursday’s matchup between the Washington Capitals and Ottawa Senators.
Capitals vs. Senators Odds
- Washington Capitals Moneyline: -110
- Ottawa Senators Moneyline: -110
- Puck Line: Capitals +1.5 (-295), Senators -1.5 (+210)
- Game Total: 5.5 (Over +110, Under -130)
Game odds via Sports Interaction.
Handicapping the Capitals (34-16 SU, 32-18 ATS, 19-28-3 O/U)
Washington heads into Thursday’s meeting against Senators looking for its eighth win in its last nine games as the Capitals finish up a five-game road trip. However, while the Capitals have been winning games at an insane rate, they haven’t looked much like a true contender over the last month.
According to Evolving Hockey, the Capitals rank 19th in even strength expected goals percentage and 25th in shot attempt percentage since Dec. 30, but their poor play has been masked by incredible goaltending. The Capitals have been totally average offensively, but no team has allowed fewer goals per 60 minutes over the last month.
Washington can thank Logan Thompson, who ranks first in goals saved above expected and save percentage since Dec. 30, but Charlie Lindgren has also been good. Lindgren ranks 10th in goals saved above expected over the last month, and fifth in save percentage, but he hasn’t had much playing time, with just five starts in January.
Head coach Spencer Carbery had been alternating between Thompson and Lindgren until earlier this month when he started to ride Thompson due to Lindgren’s injury. That said, while the 27-year-old has clearly been the better of the two, and deserves to start most of the games, I’m expecting Lindgren to be between the pipes on Thursday now that he’s back to full health.
Handicapping the Senators (26-24 SU, 21-29 ATS, 14-30-6 O/U)
Ottawa kicked off its four-game homestand with wins over the Toronto Maple Leafs and Utah Hockey Club. Now the Senators return from a three-day break, looking for their third win in a row. The Senators are 14-7-2 at home this season, and they have gone 9-3 straight-up at home since losing five home games in the middle of November.
Anton Forsberg will be in the crease on Thursday, which will mark his fourth start in the last six games. Forsberg had an incredibly tough start to the season, going 4-8-1 with a goals-against average of 3.10 and a save percentage of .883, but since Jan. 10, he’s 2-1-0 while posting a 1.70 GAA and a .935 SV%.
However, the Senators haven’t looked good at even strength over the last month, ranking 21st in expected goals percentage, 23rd in shot attempt percentage, and 32nd in goal share. No team has scored fewer goals per 60 minutes at even strength than Ottawa has over the last month, but they’ve been able to play .500 hockey thanks to solid defense and goaltending. The Senators rank 10th in expected goals against and 12th in goals against per 60 minutes since Dec. 30.
Their struggles on the power play hasn’t helped, either, as Ottawa has converted on just 12.8 percent of their power play opportunities over the last month, but once again, they have been good on the defensive side of things. Ottawa ranks ninth on the penalty kill, with a 82.5 success rate, over the last month.
Best bet for Capitals vs. Senators
- 3-Way result: Regular Time Tie (+300) at Sports Interaction
Five out of the past 10 meetings between the Capitals and Senators have gone to extra time, including the last game on Jan. 16, which Washington won 1-0 on an Alex Ovechkin goal in overtime. Both teams have trended heavily toward the under this season, especially as of late, and therefore, this should be another tightly contested matchup.
The Washington Capitals will be facing off against the Ottawa Senators on January 30th in what is sure to be an exciting match-up. The Capitals are currently sitting in second place in the Metropolitan Division, while the Senators are in seventh place in the Atlantic Division. The Capitals are the favorites heading into this game, with odds of -175. They have been playing strong hockey as of late, winning six of their last ten games. Led by superstar Alex Ovechkin, the Capitals have one of the most potent offenses in the league.
The Senators, on the other hand, are the underdogs with odds of +150. They have struggled this season, winning just three of their last ten games. However, they have shown flashes of potential and have the ability to surprise the Capitals.
In terms of betting options, the over/under for this game is set at 6.5 goals. The Capitals have been scoring at a high rate recently, so the over could be a good bet. Additionally, you may want to consider placing a bet on the Capitals to win by more than one goal, as they have been dominant in their recent victories.
Overall, this game has the potential to be a high-scoring affair, with the Capitals likely coming out on top. Make sure to tune in on January 30th to see how it all plays out!

Capitals @ Flames Recap: Caps Douse Flames in 3-1 Win
Jan 28, 2025; Calgary, Alberta, CAN; Washington Capitals left wing Pierre-Luc Dubois (80) celebrates his goal with teammates against the Calgary Flames during the first period at Scotiabank Saddledome. Mandatory Credit: Sergei Belski-Imagn Images
Did Alex Ovechkin score? Nope.
Plus: The Washington Capitals got a 5-on-3 opportunity with about five minutes left in the second period, and they did not let it go to waste. It took Dylan Strome just 18 seconds to score a power play goal, bringing the Caps to 4-for-6 on the two-man advantage this season.
Minus: The Capitals’ streak of 13-straight successful penalty kills came to an end tonight after Blake Coleman scored a power play goal for the Calgary Flames. Coleman’s goal came just 12 second’s into Pierre-Luc Dubois’ unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which got PLD benched for the rest of the period. PLD was clearly frustrated that the ref missed a Flames’ penalty, but he got dinged for yelling at the officials instead. While he definitely had a case to make, that’s not a good position to put the rest of the team in. PLD was out of the doghouse to start the third period, however
Our Three Stars:
*** Aliaksei Protas (1G)
** Dylan Strome (1 PPG)
* Logan Thompson (32 saves)Related
The Washington Capitals came out victorious in a hard-fought battle against the Calgary Flames, coming away with a 3-1 win on the road. The Capitals showed their defensive prowess by limiting the Flames to just one goal, while capitalizing on their scoring opportunities. The game started off with both teams playing a tight defensive game, with neither team able to find the back of the net in the first period. The Capitals broke the deadlock in the second period, with goals from Tom Wilson and Alex Ovechkin giving them a 2-0 lead.
The Flames fought back in the third period, with Elias Lindholm scoring to bring them within one goal. However, the Capitals responded quickly with a goal from T.J. Oshie to seal the win.
Goaltender Ilya Samsonov was a standout performer for the Capitals, making key saves throughout the game to secure the victory. The win improved the Capitals’ record to 5-1-1 on the season, while the Flames dropped to 4-3-0.
Overall, it was a solid performance from the Capitals, who showcased their defensive prowess and ability to capitalize on scoring chances. The Flames put up a good fight, but ultimately fell short against a strong Capitals team. The win gives the Capitals momentum as they continue their road trip, while the Flames will look to bounce back in their next game.

Blake Coleman scored, and Dustin Wolf made 20 saves for the Flames (24-18-7), who have lost two straight following a three-game winning streak.
“I thought it was a pretty good game,” Coleman said. “Honestly, I felt like we deserved better. Just some critical situations was the difference. I think at 5-on-5, I don’t feel like it was even that close who the better team was. We just didn’t find ways to put pucks in the net. A few breakdowns and mental mistakes.”
Dubois put Washington up 1-0 at 1:51 of the first period with a wrist shot from the hashmarks over Wolf’s glove after a turnover into the slot by MacKenzie Weegar.
“I don’t know what the stats are but the team that usually scores the first goal gets a pretty big advantage on winning the game,” Dubois said. “You want to score first, but there’s a lot of hockey left and we did a good job of closing it off.”
Coleman tied it 1-1 at 12:17 of the second period when he tipped Tyson Barrie‘s point shot by Thompson’s blocker on a power play created by a Dubois minor for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Strome gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead at 15:12. He backhanded a shot by Wolf’s glove on a 5-on-3 power play with Coleman in the box for closing his hand on the puck during Calgary’s kill of Brayden Pachal‘s initial minor for hooking.
“Fluke thing,” Coleman said. “I catch it with my top hand, which is kind of an uncomfortable spot to be in. Just a little mental mistake, wasn’t sure what to do with the puck really. It puts us on a 5-on-3 and they capitalize. Can’t give teams with good power plays that opportunity.”
In a thrilling matchup, goaltender Zach Thompson made 32 saves to lead the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames. Despite facing a flurry of shots, Thompson stood tall between the pipes and made key saves to preserve the win for his team. The Capitals got off to a strong start, with goals from Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie giving them an early lead. However, the Flames fought back and closed the gap in the second period with goals from Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk.
In the third period, Thompson made several crucial saves to keep the Flames at bay and secure the win for the Capitals. His performance earned him praise from his teammates and coaches, who credited him for his outstanding play in the game.
Overall, it was a hard-fought victory for the Capitals, who showed resilience and determination in holding off the Flames. With Thompson’s stellar performance in net, the team looks poised for success as they continue their push towards the playoffs.

He’s currently among the favourites to be nominated for the Vezina trophy and has played a major role in the Capitals’ success.

He ranks third in wins, third in save percentage and second in goals against average among all goaltenders this season.
During his Golden Knights career, Thompson showed flashes that he could be a No. 1 goalie and in the offseason, Thompson spoke to the Golden Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon about becoming the main guy in Vegas. McCrimmon told him that the role belonged to Hill and Thompson formally requested a trade.
The Golden Knights received the 83rd overall pick in the 2024 NHL draft, which was used on Belarusian goaltender Pavel Moysevich, and a third-round pick in 2025.
