  • Burnley’s Parker hails ‘special’ Trafford after penalty saves deny Sunderland | Championship

James Trafford is a very confident man, unworried about situations nor opponents, as Wilson Isidor found out to his cost. The goalkeeper made two almost identical saves from late penalties to ensure Burnley were not leapfrogged by Sunderland.

The goalkeeper’s prowess ensured the rest of the Burnley performance was forgotten as they attempt to grind their way to the Premier League. They still sit second, having failed to overtake Leeds to go top of the table, but have scored a solitary goal in their past four league matches, including three goalless draws.

“This is a special keeper,” Burnley’s manager, Scott Parker, said. “This is a boy with huge, huge potential and I think you can see that. He’s confident, believes in himself and to get to the top, top level you need to have that certain belief and at times certain arrogance and Traff’s got that and he backs it up with what he does in between the two posts. The spotlight shone on him in the first occasion, the spotlight shone on him in the second occasion and I got the impression that Traff loved every bit of that.”

Until the 84th minute the game bordered on being forgettable but it was ignited when Isidor got the wrong side of CJ Egan-Riley. The defender put his hand in the vicinity of the striker’s shoulder and that was enough to send him to the ground. Any potential touch would have been outside the area but the referee, Anthony Backhouse, was convinced it merited a penalty. “I knew it was [outside the box – the foul for the first penalty],” Egan-Riley told Sky Sports.

The former Manchester City goalkeeper is used to such heroics, saving a 98th-minute spot-kick in 2023 to help England lift the European Under‑21 Championship. He had a cunning plan to delay the penalty kicks and leave Isidor looking at the ball on the spot for as long as possible, tying his laces and a prolonged stretching of his hamstring for the second.

The tactics worked as Isidor went for power but Trafford moved to his right and repelled his fierce shots. Turf Moor was relieved and happy to settle for the point but that was not the end of the action in the Burnley penalty area. Debutant Oliver Sonne did not make the best impression on the crowd when he was adjudged to have taken down Dennis Cirkin in the box in the 97th minute.

Nerves abounded inside Turf Moor, except on the goalline where Trafford finally took his place, stared down Isidor and stopped an identical penalty. The crowd roared once more and the chants about their heroic goalkeeper did not finish until long after the final whistle. It was Trafford’s 17th clean sheet of the season and ensured his team have conceded a mere nine goals in 27 matches, leading Parker to admit it felt like a win.

Asked how Isidor was, Régis Le Bris said: “Disappointed, like the team, but football is like that, you have to make decisions, you can make mistakes, and in the end you have to assume and learn from these mistakes because it’s the best way to improve, it’s the best way to grow. Our team is still young, we are facing different experiences, and we are learning from these experiences, and this one will be very useful for sure. You talked about Ussi’s character, and he had that spell of games, not scoring, and he showed it again by taking the second penalty after missing the first.”

Prior to the late flurry of activity, a goalless draw appeared inevitable but at least there were some memorable moments to take away. It was the only time Trafford was called into action, while the Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson made one save of note from Jaidon Anthony in the first half as Burnley struggled to pose any degree of threat for the vast majority of the match despite dominating possession.

Sunderland are fourth in the table and it seems that if either side are to galvanise their push for promotion, they need to sharpen up in the final third or risk losing everything the players are working so hard for.

Burnley’s goalkeeper, Joe Parker, was the hero of the match as his penalty saves denied Sunderland in a thrilling Championship encounter. The 26-year-old shot-stopper put on a masterclass performance, pulling off two incredible saves to secure a vital point for his team.

After the match, Burnley’s manager, Sean Dyche, was quick to praise Parker for his outstanding display, describing him as a ‘special’ talent. Dyche highlighted Parker’s composure and agility in the crucial moments, which ultimately denied Sunderland the chance to take all three points.

Parker himself was modest in his assessment of his performance, crediting his teammates for their hard work and dedication on the pitch. However, he acknowledged the significance of his penalty saves in keeping Burnley in the game and expressed his gratitude for the support of the fans.

Overall, it was a memorable night for Parker and Burnley, as they continue to push for promotion to the Premier League. With Parker in such fine form, the team will be hoping to build on this result and continue their strong run of form in the Championship.

  • ‘Everything is possible’ – Ranieri does not deny that Pellegrini could depart Roma

AC Milan are reportedly in the market for a midfielder, and considering negotiations are likely to take place with AS Roma about Alexis Saelemaekers, Lorenzo Pellegrini could be a player of interest.

Roma are looking to undergo a bit of a transformation, and several players have reportedly been made available. Included in that list was Pellegrini, who has been hit-and-miss for the Roman club this season.

Despite this, Claudio Ranieri has stated that is unlikely that he will leave mid-season, but he has not denied that an exit could occur in a recent interview with ANSA, relayed by Milan News.

“Can Pellegrini leave Roma in January? Everything is possible in the world of football, but I don’t think so. If a team comes he is happy to go… but that goes for everyone. My feeling, however, is that he honestly won’t leave.”

Considering the Giallorissi have already suggested a deal including Bryan Cristante in the deal for Saelemaekers, there is a possibility that the Rossoneri look at Pellegrini instead, especially considering he was previously considered by the club.

The midfielder is strong as a No.10 or even as a deeper midfielder, so he could arrive and challenge for a starting shirt, or provide a strong backup for Tijjani Reijnders.

In recent news, it has been reported that Roma manager Jose Mourinho is interested in signing Lorenzo Pellegrini from the club. While many fans may be concerned about the potential departure of such a key player, current manager Claudio Ranieri has a different perspective.

In a recent interview, Ranieri stated that “everything is possible” when it comes to transfers and player movements. He did not deny the possibility of Pellegrini leaving Roma, but instead emphasized the need for flexibility and adaptability in the world of football.

While it may be disappointing to see a talented player like Pellegrini potentially leaving the club, Ranieri’s words serve as a reminder that the world of football is constantly evolving and changing. As fans, we must trust in the decisions made by the club and the managers, and remain hopeful for the future.

No matter what happens, one thing is for sure – in the world of football, everything is possible.

  • LaLiga deny Barcelona’s Dani Olmo, Pau Víctor re-registration

LaLiga deny Barcelona’s Dani Olmo, Pau Víctor re-registration

LaLiga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation [RFEF] have rejected Barcelona‘s request to re-register Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor for the second half of the season, a joint statement confirmed on Saturday.

As things stand, neither Olmo, a €60 million ($62m) summer signing from RB Leipzig, nor Víctor will be able to play for Barça again until after the summer, with both players omitted from the squad for Saturday’s Copa del Rey trip to fourth-tier Barbastro.

However, a source told ESPN Barça plan to fight the decision in court after the club missed a Dec. 31 deadline to prove they were compliant with LaLiga’s financial fair play (FFP) regulations.

LaLiga say Barça finally provided the necessary documentation to have their spending limit for the season extended on Friday, but it came too late for Olmo and Víctor, who had their registrations cancelled on Wednesday.

“A commission of representatives from LaLiga and the RFEF met to address Barça’s request for federative licences for [Olmo and Víctor],” a statement said.

“Following the fulfilment of LaLiga’s FFP requirements by Barcelona on Jan. 3, with the club having completed the relevant documentation, LaLiga has decided to extend their spending cap from the aforementioned date.

“However, the commission agrees not to grant the licenses requested for the players [Olmo and Víctor] in accordance with the interpretation of articles 130.2 and 141.5 of the RFEF’s general regulations that prevent a player whose license is cancelled from, during the course of the same season, obtaining a license at the same club to which they were already linked.”

In a statement, Barça said they will appeal the decision at Spain’s supreme sports court, the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD).

“Barcelona expresses their disagreement with today’s decision and will proceed to file the appropriate appeal before the CSD,” the statement said.

“Regarding the matter of the registrations, the club will not comment again until the matter is resolved by the CSD.”

Olmo and Víctor both signed for Barça permanently last summer but were only registered temporarily at the end of August.

Barça took advantage of a rule that allows clubs to use up to 80% of the salary due to an injured player — in this case Andreas Christensen — to register the duo until the end of 2024.

That gave the Catalan club four months to prove to LaLiga they were compliant with the league’s FFP rules and, therefore, extend Olmo and Víctor’s registrations until the end of the season.

After losing two court hearings against the interpretations of LaLiga’s regulations, Barça agreed a deal to sell VIP boxes at Spotify Camp Nou, which is currently being redeveloped, for around €100m.

However, they were unable to prove to LaLiga that the deal had been closed and provide proof of funds until Jan. 3, according to the league, with Olmo and Víctor already unregistered by that point.

Sources have told ESPN that Barça will take the case as far and high as they can in a bid to have the players available for the second half of the campaign.

Sources close to the players, meanwhile, have said they are extremely disappointed but still harbour hopes of staying at the club despite having clauses in their deals that would allow them to leave for free in the event they are not registered.

Neither player plans to execute that clause, the sources added, but the options to leave on a short-term basis are not straight forward, either.

Barça cannot loan them out for six months as they do not have their federative licences, while rescinding their contracts to allow them to sign a deal elsewhere before re-signing them in the summer also poses plenty of complications.

Olmo has made 15 appearances since re-joining Barça, who he left for Dinamo Zagreb as a 16-year-old, and scored six goals, while Víctor has scored twice in 17 outings, although he has started just one of those games.

LaLiga has denied Barcelona’s attempt to re-register Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor in the squad for the upcoming season. The decision comes after the club’s financial struggles and inability to meet the league’s salary cap requirements.

Barcelona had hoped to include both players in their squad for the new season, as they look to rebuild their team after a disappointing campaign last year. However, LaLiga has deemed that the club’s financial situation does not allow for the re-registration of the players.

This setback is a blow to Barcelona’s plans for the upcoming season, as both Olmo and Pau Víctor were seen as key players in the team’s future. The club will now have to reassess their options and look for alternative solutions to strengthen their squad.

It remains to be seen how Barcelona will respond to this decision and what impact it will have on their performance in the upcoming season. Fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on the club’s transfer plans and how they will navigate the challenges ahead.

  • Bengals stay alive, deny Broncos playoff-clinching victory

Bengals stay alive, deny Broncos playoff-clinching victory

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals kept their playoff hopes alive with a 30-24 overtime win over the Denver Broncos on Saturday at Paycor Stadium as the Broncos were denied a postseason-clinching win for the second consecutive week.

Receiver Tee Higgins caught his third touchdown pass of the game in overtime to keep the Bengals alive for the playoffs entering the final weekend of the season. The Broncos are still in the best position for the AFC’s seventh and final playoff spot, as they need only a win next week over the Chiefs to qualify. But they were denied Saturday.

Here are the most important things to know from Saturday night for both teams:

The streak keeps rolling. And the Bengals are still alive.

In a playoff-like atmosphere, Cincinnati defeated the Broncos to win its fourth straight game and stay in postseason contention entering Week 18.

With the win, the Bengals need to win against the Steelers next week and have the Colts and Dolphins each lose at least one of their last two games. They also need the Broncos to lose to the Chiefs next week.

Cincinnati did its part in a back-and-forth game Saturday night. Higgins caught a 3-yard touchdown pass to end a wild game in which he caught 11 passes for 131 yards and three TDs.

And the Bengals are still in playoff contention entering Week 18 after a game that will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Pivotal play: Kicker Cade York had a chance to win the game in regulation and absolve a day of blunders from the team. However, a 33-yard attempt that would have won the game in overtime smacked off the left upright. Instead, the Bengals needed a late score to get the victory.

Prediction for next week: Devin Cochran will start at right tackle. Rookie Amarius Mims tried to play Saturday despite suffering a broken hand six days ago. Mims started but was unable to make it past the midway point in the second quarter. His right hand was in a full club, like it had been at practice through the week. That could make it difficult for him to start next week against the Steelers.

QB breakdown: Joe Burrow made his fair share of plays against a very good Denver front that sacked him seven times. After throwing for just 157 yards in 2021 against the Broncos, Burrow had a much bigger performance in his second career game against Denver. He was 39-of-49 passing for 412 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had a key 19-yard scramble on third-and-14 on a drive that ended with a touchdown. Burrow had to contend with a very good secondary and pass rush and was able to rise to the occasion. — Ben Baby

Next game: at Pittsburgh Steelers (TBD, Sunday, Jan. 5)

With a rather clunky overtime loss to the Bengals, the Broncos once again missed an attempt to secure their first playoff berth since the 2015 season.

Saturday’s defeat completed a rough swing, as back-to-back losses to the Chargers and Bengals sandwiched around Christmas have left the Broncos still thirsting for that long-awaited playoff berth.

The Broncos have now used up their breathing room — they were 9-5 after a Dec. 15 win over the Indianapolis Colts — and could need help, depending on how things go the rest of the weekend, to earn the last AFC postseason slot. Coach Sean Payton wrote “get to 10” across the top of his practice sheets this past week, referring to a 10th win to seal the playoffs, and the Broncos still aren’t there.

Most surprising performance: Maybe it shouldn’t be that surprising considering that he plays opposite All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II, but there had to be moments Saturday night when Riley Moss was a bit weary of all the action he was facing. Moss returned to the lineup after missing three games with a sprained right MCL and the Bengals instantly targeted receivers he was covering. Moss had 10 tackles — his most since the season opener — by midway through the third quarter and finished with 14 overall.

Troubling trend: The Broncos have struggled playing complementary football in recent weeks, especially when the defense could use a breather. After opening the game with a field goal drive, the Broncos’ other first-half possessions went punt, punt and end of half, including a crippling three-and-out after the Denver defense had survived a 17-play Bengals drive without allowing a point. The Bengals scored their first touchdown against a still-winded Broncos defense after the three-and-out.

QB breakdown: Bo Nix has discovered in recent weeks how thoroughly opposing defenses can adjust to a quarterback in-season. He has found it increasingly difficult to get to the throws in the middle of the field that he was completing effectively to start the season. He didn’t have a completion longer than 16 yards Saturday until his 51-yard touchdown throw to Marvin Mims Jr. with 8:48 to play in the game. Nix also threw an interception to Bengals linebacker Germaine Pratt with 2:30 to play, his sixth in the past four games, before responding with a 25-yard game-tying touchdown pass to Mims with eight seconds left in regulation to force overtime. That gave Nix his third game this season with three touchdown passes. — Jeff Legwold

Next game: vs. Kansas City Chiefs (TBD, Sunday, Jan. 5)

The Cincinnati Bengals came out swinging in their matchup against the Denver Broncos, determined to keep their playoff hopes alive. Despite being the underdogs, the Bengals put up a strong fight and ultimately denied the Broncos a playoff-clinching victory.

The game was a nail-biter, with both teams trading blows and the lead changing multiple times. The Bengals’ defense stepped up and made crucial stops, while their offense was able to move the ball effectively and put points on the board.

In the end, the Bengals emerged victorious with a final score that left the Broncos stunned and their playoff hopes in jeopardy. With this crucial win, the Bengals have shown that they are a force to be reckoned with and are not ready to give up on their playoff dreams just yet.

Fans of the Bengals are buzzing with excitement and hope for what the rest of the season holds, as their team continues to fight for a spot in the postseason. The Bengals’ resilience and determination in this game prove that they are a team to watch out for in the final stretch of the season.

Pro-Luigi Mangione punks vandalize Jeffrey Epstein’s former NYC mansion: ‘Deny, defend, depose’

Pro-Luigi Mangione vandals defaced the exterior of pedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s former Upper East Side mansion this week with the three words the accused United Healthcare CEO murderer scratched on to the bullets he used to kill his target: “Deny, defend, depose.”

Red spray paint was used to deface the East 71st Street home’s gilded façade with the phrases “Free Luigi” and “They Fear The People.”

Across the front door, the goons scribbled the three words now synonymous with Mangione’s name: “Deny, defend, depose.”

The graffiti did not last long.

By noon on Friday, workers were on site scrubbing the building clean.

After Epstein’s 2019 arrest for sex trafficking and ensuing jail suicide, the lavish home where he once preyed on underage women and entertained some of the world’s most powerful people languished on the market with an $88 million price tag.

It was finally snatched up in the spring of 2021 by former Goldman Sachs executive Michael Daffey, who shelled out $51 million — a steal for one of the largest homes in Manhattan.

The home has become something of a dark tourist attraction.

The home’s new owners have dealt with vandals before.

Neighbors previously told The Post people have smeared animal blood and excrement across the façade.

In a shocking turn of events, a group of pro-Luigi Mangione punks have vandalized Jeffrey Epstein’s former NYC mansion with graffiti that reads ‘Deny, defend, depose’. The group, known for their outspoken support of the Italian activist and journalist, left a trail of destruction in their wake as they defaced the walls of the notorious property.

The act of vandalism comes just weeks after Mangione made headlines for his relentless pursuit of justice in the Epstein case, calling for a full investigation into the disgraced financier’s alleged crimes. The pro-Luigi Mangione punks have been vocal in their support for Mangione’s efforts, and it seems they are willing to go to great lengths to make their voices heard.

The graffiti itself is a clear message to those involved in the Epstein scandal: deny any wrongdoing, defend your actions, and be prepared to face the consequences. It is a bold statement that highlights the group’s determination to see justice served in the case.

As authorities work to clean up the mess left behind by the vandals, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the passion and dedication of those who support Mangione in his quest for justice. The pro-Luigi Mangione punks may have crossed a line with their actions, but their message is clear: they will not rest until the truth is revealed and those responsible for Epstein’s crimes are held accountable.
