  • ‘Wolf Man’ and ‘September 5’ now available at home; Florence Pugh, Andrew Garfield romance ‘We Live in Time’ hits Max

After Universal tried and failed to usher in a new era of their classic monster movies, 2020’s The Invisible Man helped resurrect the concept with Leigh Whannell’s clever and thoroughly modern take on the story.

Not only was that movie a hit with both audiences and critics, but it also seemed to provide a much-needed template for Universal to update its beloved characters to reflect the times. It took five years, but the studio has finally made a proper follow-up in Wolf Man, and they brought back Whannell to try his hand again.

The response to Wolf Man was markedly different than that of The Invisible Man, regarding both box office and critical reception. But is it worth your time? It debuted on digital this week, 17 days after its theatrical release, so you can find out for yourself.

Wolf Man isn’t the only movie newly available on streaming this week — the critically acclaimed, ripped-from-the-headlines period journalism thriller September 5 is out now, and A24’s hit romance We Live in Time, starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, hits Max.

The Pharrell Williams Lego biopic Piece by Piece is out on Peacock, which could be appealing to kids and parents alike. For after the kids go to bed, Kill, a hyper-violent action-thriller from India that earned rave reviews, is available on Hulu.

Here’s what to know about the theatrical movies newly available to stream as of this week and where you can find them.

    Wolf Man

Wolf Man sets up a loaded metaphor in its terrific, tense opening sequence: A boy and his overbearing survivalist father hunting in the woods encounter some sort of animalistic creature. As the movie progresses, it becomes clear there’s not enough meat on the bone for the analogy they’re going for regarding parenthood, trauma, abuse and how we’re doomed to become our parents, no matter how hard we try to stray from the path.

It’s heavy stuff for a movie that could stand to have some fun, but there are still elements worthy of praise, including the practical makeup effects on the wolf transformation and the impactful, but all-too-brief moments of body horror. Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner are two great performers, but it’s hard to get a read on their characters.

Wolf Man is ambitious enough to recommend to those who like their genre fare more offbeat, but it doesn’t come together in the same satisfying way that Whannell’s previous effort did.

    We Live in Time

Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star in A24’s romance We Live in Time, which you may want to watch with a box of tissues nearby. It’s all about the inventive structure here, as it’s a story you’ve otherwise likely seen before. The movie is told nonlinearly, turning it into a sort of puzzle you solve as it goes.

It’s a neat trick to keep you engaged in what could be overly familiar, weepy material, and both Pugh and Garfield are great in it as a couple that we see go through many ups and downs over a decade. It’s refreshing that the movie isn’t afraid to present the hardships as equally as it depicts the good times.

    September 5

September 5 has to be one of the most overlooked and underseen movies of 2024. It earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture — Drama, and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars, but still, it feels like few people have seen or heard of this movie.

Maybe some of that has to do with the fact that it is about events that were already famously depicted in the capital-G Great Munich, which Steven Spielberg directed. Still, that shouldn’t affect your interest in September 5, which tells a separate story.

It’s a journalism process movie that takes place during the 1972 Munich Olympics, when an American sports broadcasting crew found itself thrust into covering the hostage crisis involving Israeli athletes. It may be a journalism movie, and a great one at that, but it’s also a gripping thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, as the sports journalists and the news junkies jockey to cover it effectively.

It’s about big ethical questions and moral quandaries that are as relevant today as they were in 1972, and you get the sense this moment in time was important in establishing broadcast journalism as we know it. A terrific nuts-and-bolts “how tough decisions get made in real time” movie!

    Piece by Piece

Piece by Piece isn’t the first animated movie to use the Lego aesthetic, but it’s certainly the first biopic about a real person to be depicted in Lego.

It’s not as strange as it sounds, and the movie actually does a good job of setting up why exactly you’re watching a movie about legendary music producer and musician Pharrell Williams in Lego form. Pharrell has synesthesia, which allows him to essentially see music, which alone is a clever justification for the colorful world in the movie.

There’s an infectious and inspiring creative energy that’s hard to ignore, and if the story of Williams’s rise from rags to riches wasn’t compelling enough, the soundtrack of wall-to-wall bangers that he either produced or sang on himself is undeniable.

    Kill

If you love a good revenge movie and you don’t mind a lot of blood and nonstop violence, the aptly titled Kill is for you. The plot is high-concept, yet simple: A guy is out for revenge, killing those who have wronged him, except it’s set entirely on a moving train.

Kill doesn’t pull a bait-and-switch exactly, but the degree to which the tenor of the violence changes after a certain death at the midpoint of the movie is unexpected and harrowing. A movie that revels in violent deaths suddenly starts showing you that every death means the world to someone — what was once just bombastic entertainment has been rendered upsetting and hard to shake.

Kill does a great job of building emotional stakes so the audience cares about what’s going on, and thankfully, the action is also shot well and choreographed so there’s rarely a dull moment.

  • SECRET WARS Fan Art Pits Tom Holland’s SPIDER-MAN Against Tobey Maguire And Andrew Garfield

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker met two of his alternate reality doppelgangers (played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield). However, in a surprising twist, the heroes never came to blows!

It’s become something of a trope in comic books for heroes who meet to initially brawl before taking on a greater threat. For those of you disappointed that didn’t happen back in 2021, this newly revealed fan art is likely to hit the right spot.

As you can see below, it imagines the three Spider-Men coming to blows during Avengers: Secret Wars. It’s a spectacular visual that teases an amazing battle we could have only dreamed of seeing before the Multiverse Saga.

Garfield was recently asked about his possible future as Peter #3 and replied, “I’m gonna disappoint you. Yeah, no [I’m not in Spider-Man 4]. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”

However, in the same conversation, he didn’t close the door on returning to a big franchise. “If it felt in line with my soul and was gonna be fun. Maybe I’m gonna have like five kids at some point, and I’m gonna need to start saving up for the school tuition or something.”

The Russo Brothers are big fans of Spider-Man – they brought Holland’s version into the MCU in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War – and we’d imagine they’ll leap at the chance to have these three share the screen again.

“Endgame was the end, and it took a little time for us to begin to think about it as something other than an end,” Anthony explained in a recent interview. “We’re very close with Kevin and Lou [D’Esposito, Marvel Studios’ Co-President] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years. We’ve talked about a lot of ideas.”

It was reportedly then that inspiration for Secret Wars struck. “Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon an idea that activated all of us,” he added. “You couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.’”

According to Joe, “There were ideas that we were trying to wrap our heads around that preceded this one, and we just never found the story. I remember calling [Stephen McFeely] and said, ‘Hey, crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do Secret Wars?’ You were like, ‘F*** no. Absolutely not. And then you hung up. And the next morning at 7.30 you called and were like, ‘Alright, I have an idea.’”

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released in May 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to arrive in May 2027.

  • Secret Wars Fan Art Envisions Spider-Man Brawl Between Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield & Tom Holland

Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to close out Marvel Studios’ Multiverse Saga. This means that the epic crossover event will feature fan-favorite characters from across the last three phases, including all three cinematic versions of Spider-Man.

At the time of writing, the only confirmed cast members for Secret Wars are the Fantastic Four actors (Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. However, several other superheroes have been rumored to appear, such as Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Others who are reportedly in the mix are the three live-action Spider-Mans, played by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland, which prompted artist artoftimetravel to create a piece of fan art that sees them battling one another for the survival of their respective universe. Check out the stunning Secret Wars fan art below.

Captain America 4 Trailer Debuts Epic New Red Hulk Footage as Tickets Go on Sale

To mark tickets going on sale, Marvel Studios debuts a new Red Hulk-filled trailer for Captain America: Brave New World.

Shared on Instagram, the Secret Wars fan art sees Maguire, Garfield, and Holland’s Spider-Mans fighting one another in space. “It is rumored that the three Spider-men will fight each other in Avengers: Secret Wars for the survival of their respective universe. Who do you think would win this fight?” the artist captioned the post.

Avengers: Secret Wars was announced at 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con and is expected to serve as a direct sequel to Avengers: Doomsday (originally announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty). While story details remain under wraps, Marvel Studios has begun to lay the groundwork for Secret Wars in some of its movies. The 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness seemingly set up the Secret Wars storyline with its end-credits scene mentioning an impending “incursion,” a term pulled from the 2015 Secret Wars comic book storyline that is used to describe two worlds that are about to collide. 2023’s The Marvels also dealt with multiple realities, with the movie ending with Monica Rambeau trapped in a parallel universe that is home to the X-Men.

The Russo Brothers Are Returning to Direct Secret Wars

Destin Daniel Cretton, who helmed Shang-Chi, was originally set to direct the fifth Avengers movie back when it was still known as The Kang Dynasty. While no director was ever officially attached to Secret Wars, Michael Waldron had been hired to script both Avengers sequels following his work on Loki and Multiverse of Madness. However, at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Joe and Anthony Russo were confirmed to be returning to Marvel to helm the retitled Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, with Stephen McFeely joining them as writer for both movies.

  • Andrew Garfield Denies ‘Spider-Man 4’ Casting Rumors

Andrew Garfield Denies ‘Spider-Man 4’ Casting Rumors

Andrew Garfield recently told GQ UK that rumors claiming he has signed on to star in Marvel’s “Spider-Man 4″ are not true, although he is blatantly aware that no comic book movie fan is going to believe him. After all, Garfield spent all of 2021 denying he’d be back as the web-slinger in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Then he popped up opposite Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire’s iterations of Spider-Man, which powered “No Way Home” to $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office.

“I’m gonna disappoint you. Yeah, no,” Garfield told the publication about “Spider-Man 4” rumors. “But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”

When asked if he’d be interested in coming back as Spider-Man or signing on to star in another big-budget Hollywood franchise, the Oscar nominee answered: “If it felt in line with my soul and was gonna be fun. Maybe I’m gonna have like five kids at some point, and I’m gonna need to start saving up for the school tuition or something.”

Rumors have also circulated online that Garfield will be reuniting with his “Silence” director Martin Scorsese to play Jesus in a new movie, but the actor said “it’s not true to my knowledge.” Garfield would love the chance to make another Scorsese movie, but “you can’t just keep waiting for Scorsese to call, because he makes a movie every three years and a lot of the time Leo DiCaprio is in it.”

Garfield debuted as Peter Parker in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man,” but his tenure as the superhero was cut short when 2014’s “Amazing Spider-Man 2” underperformed at the box office. The actor told Esquire magazine last year that he was “left dangling” when his Spider-Man role came to such an abrupt end. Returning for “No Way Home” was a homecoming of sorts.

“I thought Tobey is not going to want to do that. He’ll act every 10 years much to my chagrin, and I’ve shared that to him,” Garfield admitted about his “No Way Home” doubts. “When I heard that he was kind of leaning in I thought it was either going to be the greatest thing in the world or the worst thing in the world. I am so grateful because it was the most joyful thing ever. All the pressure was on Tom.”

Garfield added to Esquire at the time that “I would 100% come back [as Spider-Man] if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into. I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”

As for “Spider-Man 4,” Holland said on the “Rich Roll Podcast” last month that the pitch for the movie was “excellent,” adding: “The writers are doing a great job. I read it three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me. Zendaya and I sat down and read it together and we at times were bouncing around the living room like this is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect.”

Head over to GQ UK’s website to read Garfield’s latest profile in its entirety.

There have been recent rumors circulating that Andrew Garfield is set to reprise his role as Spider-Man in the upcoming film “Spider-Man 4.” However, the actor himself has come out to deny these rumors.

In a recent interview, Garfield stated that while he is grateful for the opportunity to play the iconic superhero in the past, he is not involved in any future Spider-Man projects. He emphasized that he is focused on his current projects and has no plans to return to the role at this time.

Fans of Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man may be disappointed by this news, but it seems that the actor is ready to move on to new opportunities and challenges in his career. Only time will tell if we will see him don the red and blue suit once again, but for now, it looks like the rumors of his return in “Spider-Man 4” are just that – rumors.

Andrew Garfield Won’t Be in ‘Spider-Man 4’ or Scorsese Movie

No spiders or Scorsese for him.

Given that he starred in three separate buzzy movies in 2021 (Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and Tick, Tick … Boom!, for which he was Oscar nominated), you’d be forgiven for assuming that Andrew Garfield was still constantly on a screen near you. Not so much! He starred in no movies in 2022 or ’23, just We Live in Time in 2024, and even his slate moving forward is smaller than we expected. In a January 2 profile in British GQ, Garfield took the time to dispel rumo(u)rs of his involvement in two upcoming projects.

First off, he claimed that he will not star in Spider-Man 4, though “I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on,” given that he lied about being in the previous one. We choose to believe him anyway. Plus, he says he’s not starring in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Jesus epic, A Life of Jesus. “There was a rumour,” Garfield told GQ, “It’s not true to my knowledge.” Would that happen without your knowledge, Andy?

Still, that doesn’t mean you’ll be entirely bereft of Andrew Garfield content in the near future: He’s starring in an upcoming Luca Guadagnino movie with Julia Roberts and an adaptation of the book The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton with Claire Foy. “I like working as well,” he told GQ. “You can’t just keep waiting for Scorsese to call, ’cause he makes a movie every three years and a lot of the time Leo DiCaprio is in it.” Okay, but to be fair, there are supporting parts in those movies. Maybe next time, Andrew Garfield can be the one who lets DiCaprio do coke off his crack.

Andrew Garfield fans may be disappointed to hear that the actor will not be reprising his role as Spider-Man in the upcoming ‘Spider-Man 4’ film. Despite rumors circulating online, Garfield has confirmed that he will not be involved in the project.

Additionally, Garfield recently revealed that he will not be appearing in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film, despite reports suggesting otherwise. The actor explained that while he is a fan of Scorsese’s work, he simply did not have the opportunity to collaborate with the legendary director on this particular project.

While it may be disappointing news for fans of Garfield, the actor has plenty of other projects in the works to look forward to. Stay tuned for more updates on his upcoming films and projects.

  • Andrew Garfield Shoots Down ‘Spider-Man 4’ Casting Rumors – but Knows No One Believes Him

Andrew Garfield Shoots Down ‘Spider-Man 4’ Casting Rumors – but Knows No One Believes Him

Andrew Garfield is denying rumors that he is set to appear in “Spider-Man 4” with Tom Holland to reprise his role from the “Amazing Spider-Man” films and 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

In a GQ UK interview published Thursday, the actor acknowledged that fans might be skeptical of his denial, given his past history with Marvel movies.

“I’m going to disappoint you. Yeah, no,” Garfield said when asked about the “Spider-Man 4” rumors. “But I know no one’s going to trust anything I say from now on.”

In 2021, Garfield followed Marvel’s notoriously strict code of omertà and repeatedly said he wouldn’t be in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — but then surprised audiences by appearing alongside fellow Spider-Men Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire in the film, which went on to earn $1.9 billion worldwide.

Regarding potential future franchise roles, Garfield explained he’d consider it if it felt meaningful and enjoyable.

“If it felt in line with my soul and was going to be fun,” Garfield said. “Maybe I’m going to have like five kids at some point, and I’m going to need to start saving up for the school tuition or something.”

Garfield previously said that he was not sorry he lied about returning in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” A little uncomfortable, maybe, but not sorry.

“It was stressful, I’m not going to lie,” Garfield told TheWrap. “It was rather stressful, but also weirdly enjoyable.”

Garfield compared the experience to playing the party game in which some people in a group are assigned to be werewolves but must hide that identity from their friends. “It was like this massive game of Werewolf that I was playing with journalists and with people guessing, and it was very fun,” he said.

“There were moments where I was like, ‘God, I hate lying.’ I don’t like to lie and I’m not a good liar, but I kept framing it as a game. And I kept imagining myself purely as a fan of that character, which is not hard to do.”

    “Spider-Man 4” will be released on July 26, 2026.

The post Andrew Garfield Shoots Down ‘Spider-Man 4’ Casting Rumors – but Knows No One Believes Him appeared first on TheWrap.

Andrew Garfield, who famously portrayed Spider-Man in the 2012 film “The Amazing Spider-Man” and its 2014 sequel, recently addressed rumors of his potential return for a fourth installment in the franchise. In a recent interview, Garfield shot down the speculation, stating that there are no plans for him to reprise his role as the web-slinging superhero.

However, Garfield also acknowledged that fans may not believe him, given the history of secrecy and misdirection in the world of superhero movies. “I know no one is going to believe me until they see it for themselves,” Garfield said with a laugh. “But as of now, there are no plans for me to put on the Spidey suit again.”

Despite Garfield’s denial, fans continue to speculate about the possibility of his return to the role, especially in light of recent news about the upcoming “Spider-Man: No Way Home” film, which will feature multiple versions of the iconic character. Only time will tell if Garfield is telling the truth or if he’s just trying to keep a potential surprise under wraps.

Andrew Garfield says he hasn’t signed on for ‘Spider-Man 4,’ despite previously lying about cameo in third movie

    CNN
     —

Andrew Garfield is setting the record straight… sort of.

The “We Live in Time” actor recently clarified some ongoing speculation that he’s signed on for the fourth installment of Marvel’s Tom Holland-led “Spider-Man” franchise, telling GQ UK in an interview published Thursday that it’s simply not true.

“I’m gonna disappoint you,” he said. “Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”

Garfield was referring to the fact that he spent an entire year denying his involvement in Holland’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” movie in 2021, wherein he did indeed end up making a surprise cameo.

In “No Way Home,” Garfield appeared as his iteration of the superhero Spider-Man – who he played in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” and 2014’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” – alongside another fellow Spidey actor, Tobey Maguire, who proceeded Garfield in the role in a trilogy of movies in the aughts.

Garfield’s and Maguire’s appearances in the 2021 MCU film were met with much enthusiasm from the “Spider-Man” fandom and beyond, making “No Way Home” the top-grossing film of that year.

Garfield has recently said that he’d “100 percent come back” to reprise his role, telling Esquire in October that he’d return “if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into.”

The actor also told GQ UK in Thursday’s interview that even if he doesn’t return as the web-slinging hero, he’s open to doing another large-scale franchise.

“If it felt in line with my soul and was gonna be fun,” he said. “Maybe I’m gonna have like five kids at some point, and I’m gonna need to start saving up for the school tuition or something.”

Andrew Garfield recently made headlines when he revealed that he has not signed on for a fourth Spider-Man movie, despite previously lying about a cameo in the third installment. The actor, who played the iconic superhero in The Amazing Spider-Man series, admitted that he had misled fans about his involvement in the third movie to keep the surprise under wraps.

In a recent interview, Garfield explained that while he would love to reprise his role as Spider-Man, there are currently no plans for him to do so. He also expressed his excitement for the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, which will feature multiple versions of the character played by different actors.

Fans were quick to react to Garfield’s comments, with many speculating about the possibility of a future Spider-Man movie featuring all three actors who have portrayed the character in the past. While nothing has been confirmed yet, Garfield’s revelation has certainly sparked new interest and speculation among fans of the iconic superhero.

Stay tuned for more updates on Andrew Garfield and the future of the Spider-Man franchise.

  • Andrew Garfield: ‘Knowing we can lose everything we love is what makes life meaningful’

Andrew Garfield: ‘Knowing we can lose everything we love is what makes life meaningful’

Grief comes after the fact of death. That’s what we know, it’s what we do. From films and books and TV and awkward conversations, we learn to frame it; condition our temperance, adopt ways of getting through while the time of life ticks on and on, all the while contemplating what we bore witness to – which is that, in the end, time stops. After death, there’s a consensus: we grieve to give credence to the social order of things; a bit of denial, anger, some bargaining, depression and finally, if it comes, acceptance. Rarely does reality fit the specification.

Less spoken about is the grief that swarms around everyday life in the months, the years, or certainly the final days of helplessly watching and listening to someone who is dying. Here, in between life and death, it’s a bit more complicated. Medicine, fears, sickness, darkest humour, indignity, the rhythmic flow, in and out, of an air-inflated mattress on a hospital bed, keeping everyone around it afloat, are all a gauze over the regularities of other people’s lives. When there’s a world ending, right in front of you, the outside seems much smaller and much more silly.

Andrew Garfield remembers this period, the lead-up to the death of his mother from pancreatic cancer in 2019, well. “I think it was maybe the most profound period of my life because of the lessons learned, the awareness crashing in that this is all temporary,” he says. In the twilight, Garfield found that “colours become more vivid. Moments between strangers become more alive and vital and possible… A film can hit you in a deeper way.”

He’s speaking a few minutes after a small audience watched him play out this period once more in his new film, at a screening organised by Cancer Awareness Trust.

In We Live in Time, which will be released on New Year’s Day, Garfield stars alongside Florence Pugh in a simple story about living through love, young family life, ambition, success and terminal cancer. Almut (Pugh) is a chef – a very good one – while Tobias, played by Garfield, works for Weetabix. They meet when she runs him over, when he is mid-divorce and she is on a quest for a Michelin star.

Their south London love story unfolds in a sweet, slightly clunky, occasionally funny and moving series of non-sequential snapshots in time. In an opening scene, after Almut is told that her ovarian cancer has returned, a familiar purpose is set: what matters most now that time has contracted? Almut doesn’t want to live “passively” and painfully in treatment for what could be her final months. Tobias can’t contemplate Almut’s suggestion: that foregoing surgery and chemo for six great months together might feel better.

Garfield was a strong choice for the film. His own experience of caring for someone with terminal cancer lingers in tender stares and silences and in his character’s practical drive to get his partner’s last months “right”. He’s been applauded for speaking openly about his grief in the past – and, in west London, when we meet, he’s just as candid.

Some of her last words were about making sure a cardigan for her grandson got finished. She mustered the strength to make sure it was clear what button should be used, and what grid

    Andrew Garfield

In the aftermath of his mother’s death, Garfield “didn’t want to miss a single grain of grief. I understood very quickly that every ounce of grief I was feeling was this eternal, never-ending source of love for this person,” he tells the room. “And there was something very beautiful in that. When I would feel the grief, I could feel close [to my mum], who I was missing so greatly. It was only through grief that I could actually feel [that closeness] again.”

We Live in Time doesn’t deal with the aftermath of death, but the protracted lead-up to it, particularly after an acute diagnosis like cancer. Baked into the storyline are motifs about times and timings that matter: the long three minutes spent willing two lines to appear on a pregnancy test, a later scene shows Tobias meticulously documenting the gaps between contractions on a stopwatch as Almut goes into labour.

In her own pursuits, Almut is not only subjected to the time limit in her life, but in her career. Her determination to enter the Bocuse d’Or – the Olympics of Michelin-starred chefs – sees her literally fighting the clock to serve her courses. Almut’s storyline also speaks to an important, but overlooked part of cancer care: nutrition.

That’s what Sir Chris Evans, a professor who has spent his working life turning his scientific discoveries into new, practical medical treatments and therapies is now focused on. What you eat during treatment, he says, appearing on the panel alongside Garfield, can affect your chances of survival “because they enhance the performance of the cancer drug”, he explains – though most people don’t have access to the right knowledge in order to take advantage of it.

“Born out of that fact, we have to create some kind of system, a platform … where we could put all this knowledge,” Evans, founder of global charity, Cancer Awareness Trust, explains. “So that’s what we’re building – a cancer platform – a system that’s free for everybody in the world to go on and put in some of their details, so that the system will talk to them about their cancer.”

Unlike Google and other systems, Cancer Platform won’t tell you too much, or cause more confusion. His work, alongside world-leading nutritionists, aims to inform both those already received cancer treatment, but also the population at large, especially younger generations, on how to eat well in order to help prevent a cancer diagnosis in the first place.

Looking after yourself, as well as managing your ambitions and wishes for navigating cancer and treatment is no easy task. But the film is a reminder – if somewhat on the nose – to make every second count. “It’s a life-affirming experience to know that we are going to die, to know that we will lose everything that we love – it’s actually the only thing that makes any of this meaningful,” Garfield explains.

That rare clarity of “now or never” really meaning right now or never can be a tonic. Those moments, and the joy of unfiltered intimacy when everything is stripped back to basics – care, connection, comfort – shift perspective in the right direction. In fact, while the days are inevitably hard, caring, sometimes in the smallest of ways – of preparing a meal that a person enduring chemo can taste and enjoy, moving a pillow or removing a sock that brings a moment of relief – becomes a privilege, says Garfield.

We Live in Time: Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star in first trailer for R-rated love story

“I was in the privileged position of knowing her deeply enough, loving her deeply enough, I suppose, and being separated enough from this point in our lives where I could be a kind of death doula for her, in a way,” he explains.

“She was a woman of a certain generation, of a certain personality type that would have stayed alive and suffered beyond what was humanly possible in order to make other people feel less bad. In fact, some of her last words were about making sure a cardigan for her grandson got finished. She mustered the strength to make sure it was clear what button should be used, and what grid.

“That’s who she was, in essence, and I was given a privileged opportunity to give her permission, to let her know that we would survive, not knowing if we would, to be frank. But myself, my brother and my father are a very tight-knit family – we all had to prepare for each other.”

In this latest role, Garfield prepared himself once more – but, while he’s been asked frequently about what that entailed and how it felt (upsetting, difficult, cathartic?), for him those questions miss the point.

“I have a lot of people ask me a lot of questions, and they’re kind of leading questions, usually something along the lines of, ‘gosh, but wasn’t it so difficult to dive into these emotions? Didn’t you resist it, didn’t you want to avoid it, didn’t you want to run away? How did you let it go at the end of the day?” Garfield recounts.

Moments between strangers become more alive and vital… A film can hit you in a deeper way

    Andrew Garfield

“And I understand the kind of impulse to ask a question like that, because I think we are so conditioned in our particular culture to avoid the gritty, difficult dissent of grief and difficult feelings generally – I should put that in quotation marks; ‘difficult’ as in how our culture has framed those particular set of feelings. For me, for some reason, I found myself, I did lose my mother, longing to feel the loss as quickly and as deeply, as profoundly and as richly as possible.”

Confronting the waves of grief head-on has helped Garfield. “In one of the many stages, I dove into the Atlantic Ocean because there was so much I couldn’t release … I was anxious about being overwhelmed by it so I was holding on for dear life.

“Immersing myself in the ocean gave me such incredible immediate insight. Something happened where it was as if the ocean just gave me a bunch of information. It was basically like: ‘Yeah, we get it. You lost your mum. But here’s the thing, animals and humans have been losing their mothers since time immemorial, and it feels so unique to you right now. But you just joined a long line of other people who have lost their mothers. And I’m sorry to break it to you, but you’re not special.”

It’s true – as we all know, life is unique but death is universal. How we want to be remembered or remember another, how to put a pin on exactly what mattered in one life, and what it means that it’s suddenly ending, are the questions, really, that both terrify and drive us.

Garfield hopes that We Live in Time goes some way to helping others navigate them. “I hope that this film can be a little version or a big version of what that ocean gave me,” he adds. “I feel like it can be a hand reaching out to the screen to touch anyone who has had any kind of experience that is similar, or adjacent to the experience … To me, that is the best version of what art and creativity, and communal experience is.”

‘We Live in Time’ is out 1 January. Cancer Awareness Trust will be launching a new information site, Cancer Platform in the new year

In a recent interview, Andrew Garfield opened up about his perspective on life and the importance of appreciating what we have. The talented actor, known for his roles in films such as “The Social Network” and “Hacksaw Ridge,” emphasized the idea that the possibility of losing everything we hold dear is what gives life its meaning.

Garfield explained, “We often take things for granted until they are taken away from us. The fear of losing the people and things we love is what drives us to cherish them even more. It reminds us to live in the present moment and not to waste time on trivial matters.”

This profound insight from Garfield serves as a powerful reminder to value the people and experiences that bring joy and meaning to our lives. It encourages us to appreciate the beauty in everyday moments and to prioritize what truly matters.

As we navigate the ups and downs of life, let us heed Garfield’s words and find gratitude in the knowledge that our connections and passions are what make life worth living. Let us hold onto them tightly and savor every precious moment.

Andrew Garfield on baking cookies and keeping perfume to remember his mum | Ents & Arts News

Andrew Garfield says he bakes cookies every year in memory of his late mother.

The double Oscar nominee‘s mother Lynn Garfield, from Essex, died in 2019 from pancreatic cancer.

In a conversation about his new film We Live In Time, he told Sky News about the special ways he likes to remember her.

“My mum had the most incredible chocolate chip cookie recipe that I will do every year on the anniversary of her birth and on the anniversary of her death.

“So, I will bake them, and we will all eat them, but I’ll leave a few out for her somewhere, you know, like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or Santa Claus at Christmas or something.”

The English-American actor says he looks to keep the connection to his mother alive and notes that he has some of her keepsakes in his own home.

“I have her perfume in my house that my mum used to wear when I was a kid. I have it, like, in a very special place. I’ll just like [smell it], when I need it.

“It’s like in the missing and the longing, you actually get closer to the person. It’s a weird thing. As we reach out in grief, we actually feel much closer to the person so it’s this weird conundrum”.

    ‘Leaving a legacy behind’

Garfield stars alongside Florence Pugh in the romance film We Live In Time, which follows an up-and-coming chef and a Weetabix salesman through a decade of their love story.

Pugh says she loves playing “really strong-willed women” and says playing a woman dealing with ovarian cancer allowed her to look at the idea of creating a legacy.

“She’s constantly juggling whether she does something for herself, does something for her daughter, does something for her family and ultimately, she’s allowed to do all of those things.

“I do believe that she is trying to leave that kind of legacy behind so that her daughter is proud of her.

“Just because you are a parent and you’re a mum does not mean that your wills and wants also completely vanish and disappear and you can’t have or want them too”.

‘A level of detail and care’

We Live In Time is directed by Brooklyn filmmaker John Crowley.

Having previously worked with Garfield on Boy A, the Irish director says seeing Garfield and Pugh on screen together is magic.

“All that life experience is present in his performance,” he says.

“I wouldn’t say he’s vastly different. I think the level of detail and care that he puts in the work is every bit as much as it was back then, there’s just more there now”.

We Live In Time is in cinemas on Wednesday 1 January.

Andrew Garfield, best known for his roles in “The Social Network” and “The Amazing Spider-Man,” recently opened up about his love for baking cookies and keeping perfume to remember his late mother.

In a heartfelt interview, Garfield revealed that baking cookies was a cherished pastime he shared with his mother, who passed away when he was young. He spoke fondly of the memories they shared in the kitchen, creating delicious treats and bonding over their love of baking.

Garfield also shared that he keeps a bottle of his mother’s favorite perfume to remember her by. He explained that the scent brings back memories of her presence and helps him feel connected to her, even after all these years.

The actor’s openness about his personal life and the importance of these simple rituals in keeping his mother’s memory alive is a touching reminder of the power of small gestures in honoring loved ones who have passed.

Fans of Garfield were moved by his heartfelt words and took to social media to express their support and admiration for the actor’s vulnerability. Many shared their own stories of loss and the ways in which they keep the memories of their loved ones alive through similar acts of remembrance.

It’s clear that Andrew Garfield’s love for baking cookies and keeping his mother’s perfume close to his heart are not just simple rituals, but powerful symbols of love and connection that transcend time and space.
