Idina Menzel has ‘struggled’ with the unpredictable nature of show business

Idina Menzel has “struggled” with the unpredictable nature of show business.

The 53-year-old actress was nominated for a Tony Award when she played Maureen in ‘Rent’ in the late 1990s and then landed a record deal that she was quickly dropped from when her album failed to sell, so she had to learn how to deal with the “fleeting” moments of success by the time she was cast in the original Broadway production of ‘Wicked’ in 2003.

Speaking on ‘CBS Sunday Mornings’, she explained: “I got a record deal that I always wanted to get, I wanted to be signed to a record label so badly and make my own album.

“I did, and that was a dream come true but then I only sold like three albums.

“So then I got dropped from the label and by that time, my whole kind of momentum had dissipated and I had to keep pounding the pavement.

“It wasn’t until ‘Wicked’ that things really looked up again so once again, this idea of really trying to embrace the moment, because in our business things ebb and flow. Those magical moments can be fleeting.

    “It can be a struggle.”

Idina found even wider fame when she voiced the role of Elsa in the Disney franchise ‘Frozen’ and admitted that more than a decade on from its premiere, she still enjoys singing the hit song ‘Let It Go’.

She said: “I get to sing it every time that I’m on stage in my concerts. People always ask if I get sick of a song like that. Maybe they think I’m lying, but I really don’t. For me, it’s one of those things, to bring it full circle, that reminds me of how lucky I am.”

Wicked star Idina Menzel opens up on career…

Idina Menzel, best known for her iconic role as Elphaba in the hit Broadway musical Wicked, recently sat down for an exclusive interview to discuss her career and the impact that the show has had on her life.

In the interview, Menzel reflected on the challenges and triumphs of playing such a complex character on stage. She spoke about the emotional journey she went on to bring Elphaba to life and how the role has stayed with her long after the final curtain call.

Menzel also opened up about the opportunities that Wicked has brought her, including her Grammy-winning performance of “Let It Go” from the hit Disney movie Frozen. She shared how grateful she is for the doors that Wicked has opened for her in the entertainment industry.

Despite her success, Menzel remains humble and grounded, always striving to push herself as an artist and take on new challenges. She credits her time in Wicked for giving her the confidence and skills to tackle any role that comes her way.

As she continues to wow audiences with her powerhouse vocals and captivating performances, it’s clear that Idina Menzel’s star is only shining brighter. And for fans of Wicked, her portrayal of Elphaba will forever hold a special place in their hearts.

  • Idina Menzel returns to Broadway in “Redwood”

Last fall, when superstar Idina Menzel wasn’t in New York, she hung out in Oakland, Calif. At Bandaloop Studios, she was learning to dance suspended at the end of a rope … and this from a woman who says she isn’t much of a dancer on the ground. “I don’t know what I’m doing!” she exclaimed.

But when you see exactly why she was doing this, it suddenly all makes sense.

In the new Broadway musical “Redwood,” the audience is transported to the heart of the redwood forest, and seemingly into the trees themselves. It’s loosely inspired by a woman named Julia Butterfly Hill, who, in the late ’90s, spent more than two years living in a thousand-year-old redwood to save it from being cut down. Her effort worked: the tree was saved.

And now, Menzel and writer-director Tina Landau are taking their own leap of faith with an idea they’ve been kicking around for more than a decade.

Asked if she was ever worried that their experiment would fail, Landau said, “Yes, I’m still worried. I didn’t know. But it was one of those passion projects for both myself and Idina where it was just like, let’s just trust that what is meant to happen will happen.”

“Redwood” is about a workaholic mom who runs away from it all, and finds herself in the redwood forest where her life is changed forever.

One of the themes of the show is based on the fact that 300-foot redwoods actually support each other. Landau said, “Their roots only go five or six feet into the ground. Their roots go sideways instead of down, until they reach the roots of other trees, and they intertwine with those. So, all the trees end up holding each other up.”

The musical, which is currently in previews, is all-new, but Menzel is on familiar ground. She’s performing at the Nederlander Theatre, which is the same theatre where she opened in “Rent” in 1996. “Yeah, it’s like a homecoming for me. It’s full circle. It’s very emotional for me. When I did ‘Rent,” that was the first professional job I ever had – and it was a Broadway show. So, I was super-lucky. That was a beautiful time in my life.”

It was beautiful. She was 25 years old, and her performance in “Rent” put her squarely on the map, with a Tony Award nomination. “I got a record deal that I always wanted to get,” she said. “I wanted to be signed to a record label so badly and make my own album, and I did. And that was a dream come true. But then I only sold, like, three albums. So, then I got dropped from the label. And then by that time, my whole kind of momentum of being this Tony-nominated actress from the hit musical ‘Rent,’ it sort of dissipated. And then I had to kind of keep pounding the pavement again. It wasn’t until ‘Wicked’ that things started to really look up again.”

As the original Wicked Witch Elphaba in Broadway’s “Wicked,” Menzel won a Tony, and helped turn the show into a mega-hit, though it wasn’t always easy being green. Asked what Elphaba gave her, Menzel replied, “Green ears for the rest of my life!”

And then, she was an animated princess in Disney’s “Frozen,” singing the song that millions of would-be princesses couldn’t get out of their heads. “My relationship with ‘Let It Go’ is fabulous,” she said. “It’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. People always say, ‘Do you get sick of a song like that?’ And maybe they think I’m lying to you, but I really don’t.”

Idina Menzel, as Elsa, performs “Let It Go” in “Frozen”:

“When I was a little girl, if I would have dreamt that I’d be up there singing a song like this, I wouldn’t have believed it. Or, no, I would have, ’cause I really was very cocky when I was little, and I actually, you know, believed in myself and thought, ‘Definitely, it’s definitely gonna happen for me.’”

But the task of writing Menzel’s next big song went to someone who’d never written for a big Broadway star (or for anyone). “Redwood” is composer Kate Diaz’s very first show, but you’d never know it. Asked what it’s like to write for The Idina Menzel, Diaz said, “It’s amazing. I had never written for anybody else before, so great place to start, for sure! What an incredible voice to write for.”

I asked, “Is there a little part of you that’s like, ‘Let me just see if she can do this’?”

“I mean, she usually can,” Diaz replied, “So, not really.”

And she can do it on demand, as she demonstrated in the new “Wicked” film where she brought back her classic vocal riff.

Her new show offers a different way to go green: an immersion in a leafy redwood forest. Even the seats in the newly-remodeled Nederlander are green. For Menzel it’s almost hard to believe: “It’s just so rare that you get to see it come to fruition after so many years, and they’re literally loading things into the Nederlander as we speak. That accomplishment isn’t lost on me, and it’s just, I’m so emotional about it.

And now she’s hoping to defy gravity, again. “But I think green and being high, flying, literally or figuratively, is just something that I must respond to or attract in my life, in my characters,” Menzel laughed. “And I’m kind of happy with that!”

  • ‘Wicked’s’ Director Tells Us The Original Idea They Had For Idina Menzel And Kristen Chenoweth’s Cameos, And How Plans Changed Over One ‘Magical’ Night

‘Wicked’s’ Director Tells Us The Original Idea They Had For Idina Menzel And Kristen Chenoweth’s Cameos, And How Plans Changed Over One ‘Magical’ Night

It would be difficult for Jon M. Chu to mount a film adaptation of Wicked without paying some tribute to the Broadway sensation’s original stars, Idina Menzel (as Elphaba) and Kristin Chenoweth (as Glinda). Those of you who have seen the new movie – and based on box office numbers, it’s a large number of people – know that Menzel and Chenoweth appear in Wicked in the third act, when Glinda and Elphaba leave Shiz University and arrive in the Emerald City. They are a huge part of the musical number “One Short Day.” But when we spoke with Chu, we learned that they had different plans for Menzel and Chenoweth, and they changed rapidly as the shoot went on. Jon M. Chu appeared as a guest on CinemaBlend’s official ReelBlend podcast, where he spoke about the film’s reception, and several elements of the filming of the Broadway musical. And when we brought up the cameo appearances of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, we talked about walking the complicated line of showcasing these talents, but not taking audience members out of the movie that they have shown up to see. As “wickedly” talented as Menzel and Chenoweth are, they have the ability of possibly stealing focus away from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, whose movie this very much is.

“Wicked’s Director Reveals Original Idea for Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth’s Cameos, and How Plans Changed Over One ‘Magical’ Night”

In a recent interview, the director of the hit Broadway musical “Wicked” shared some insights into the original idea they had for Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth’s cameos in the production. According to the director, the initial plan was to have both actresses make a surprise appearance during a special anniversary performance of the show.

However, as plans began to take shape, the director realized that having Menzel and Chenoweth perform together on stage would be a truly unforgettable moment for fans of the musical. And so, on one magical night, the two leading ladies of “Wicked” took to the stage together for the first time in years, much to the delight of the audience.

The director went on to explain that the energy and chemistry between Menzel and Chenoweth that night was palpable, and that it was a truly special moment that will be remembered by all who were lucky enough to witness it.

Overall, the director expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to work with such talented performers, and their excitement at the prospect of future collaborations with Menzel and Chenoweth. It just goes to show that sometimes, the best moments in theater are the ones that happen spontaneously and unexpectedly.

  • ‘Wicked’ Director Explains Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth’s Cameos

‘Wicked’ Director Explains Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth’s Cameos

With two of the most anticipated movie cameos of the year, Jon M. Chu had his work cut out for him.

The Wicked director recently recounted how he conceived an appearance for the original Broadway musical’s stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth during the song ‘One Short Day’, performed with their successors Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

“It was a tightrope that we all had to talk about a lot, with Stephen [Schwartz] and Winnie [Holzman] as well, where’s the best place,” Chu told CinemaBlend. “And we had them as cameo roles at some point, like, ‘maybe they’re Galinda’s parents’ or ‘maybe they’re this or that.’ And those were all fine and good, but every time we thought of it more, it didn’t feel — they’re at the top of their game right now. They’re at the top of their game right now. They’re not like some people who don’t do it there. [If] they are there, you want them to do their thing, and I always felt like as a fan myself, if I see them in this movie, I’m going to want them to do their thing.

The director explained that he envisioned a “Wizomania” type of ride when the two women arrive in Oz, inspired by the Disney ride ‘It’s a Small World’, “where you get into a boat and it takes you through the history of Oz.”

“And it was going to be a performance that happens around them and all this stuff and then sends you back to the Wizard’s palace,” he said. “So, we had that, because we needed to set up what the show didn’t have too much about, that we had to do, which was set up the Grimmerie, why the Wizard was here, what the prophecy is — we had a lot of information to give.”

Wicked becomes biggest stage musical adaptation ever worldwide

Chu continued, “And it was during those conversations that Stephen and I were talking, and I suggested, ‘We have this section anyway, that’s sort of outside of the narrative that we need to give. Maybe that’s where you do it, so you can add a little sugar to the information.’ And he was like, ‘Give me one night.’ And he rewrote the whole thing as a performance for these girls. It was so fun, that’s where it felt like this is a great moment of sort of a send-off.”

Menzel and Chenoweth originated the roles of Elphaba and Galinda when Wicked premiered on Broadway in 2003, earning the former a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical, for which her co-star was also nominated.

“Wicked” Director Explains Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth’s Cameos

Fans of the hit Broadway musical “Wicked” were thrilled to see original stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth make cameo appearances in the recently released film adaptation. Director Jon M. Chu sat down with us to explain how he was able to bring these iconic actresses back to the world of Oz.

Chu revealed that he knew from the beginning that he wanted to include Menzel and Chenoweth in the film in some capacity. “Their performances as Elphaba and Glinda are so ingrained in the hearts of fans, I knew we had to find a way to honor that legacy,” he said.

The director explained that Menzel and Chenoweth were more than willing to make a cameo appearance, despite their busy schedules. “They both love ‘Wicked’ as much as the fans do, so they were excited to be a part of the film in any way they could,” Chu shared.

As for their cameos, Chu kept details under wraps to surprise fans. “I wanted their appearances to be a special moment for the audience, so I won’t give too much away,” he teased. “But I can promise that their performances will bring a smile to your face and a tear to your eye.”

With the inclusion of Menzel and Chenoweth, “Wicked” fans can rest assured that the film adaptation stays true to the magic and heart of the beloved musical.

  • Idina Menzel Soars on This Alternate Version of “Let It Go”

Idina Menzel Soars on This Alternate Version of “Let It Go”

Kids have had “Let It Go” on repeat since Frozen was released in 2013 — so it only makes sense to perform the power ballad with some classroom instruments.

    How to Watch

Watch The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on NBC weeknights at 11:35/10:35c and next day on Peacock

In March 2014, Idina Menzel — who voiced Elsa and sang “Let It Go” in the original Disney animated movie — joined Jimmy Fallon and The Roots for an installment of the iconic recurring Tonight Show segment — and the alternate version remains whimsically majestic.

RELATED: Carrie Underwood’s Mega-High Notes Singing “O Holy Night” Are Spiritual Wonders

Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go” performance with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots will give you chills

Fallon and the band played a variety of instruments including kazoo, xylophone, and bongos, while Menzel’s instruments were a triangle and her incredible voice.

Fallon kept the beat by playing some toy blocks (Fun fact: The “LIG” blocks stand for “Let It Go” and were borrowed from Fallon’s daughter, Winnie). Menzel sang the opening of the number, but it was when Fallon hit play on the Casio keyboard that the soaring ballad was kicked up a notch to the showtstopper the world knows by heart.

The Tonight Show Host provided some backing vocals, but left the difficult high notes for Menzel, who belted them effortlessly — while sitting down, no less.

Elsa is just one of the iconic roles Menzel has played throughout her career. She originated the role of Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway, and even made a special cameo in the 2024 film adaptation alongside with her original Wicked co-star Kristin Chenoweth.

“Let It Go” has been a phenomenon since its 2013 release — so much so that the song has been certified Diamond, meaning it “has moved at least 10 million equivalent units by combining sales and streaming numbers.”

“I’ll never get sick of it, honestly. People always think you get sick of singing a song over and over,” Menzel said on the American Idol red carpet in May 2024 after accepting the Diamond certificate for the song’s milestone achievement. “But the truth is, if you really listen and embrace it, songs take on new meanings depending on what’s happened in my life, who’s sitting out there in the audience, maybe a young kid in a blue dress.”

“You always have different people to sing it for or different realizations about yourself and what it means to you,” she continued. “I have heard a million stories, and each one is very profound and moving to me.”

Broadway and Disney star Idina Menzel has once again proven why she is the queen of power anthems with a stunning alternate version of her hit song “Let It Go” from the beloved film Frozen.

In this new rendition, Menzel’s soaring vocals take center stage as she effortlessly hits every note with precision and emotion. The stripped-down arrangement allows her voice to shine even brighter, showcasing the raw talent and passion that has captivated audiences for years.

Fans of the original song will be delighted by this fresh interpretation, which brings a new level of intensity and vulnerability to the already iconic track. Menzel’s ability to convey the complex emotions of the song is truly unmatched, making this version a must-listen for any music lover.

Whether you’re a die-hard Frozen fan or simply appreciate top-notch vocal performances, Idina Menzel’s alternate version of “Let It Go” is sure to leave you spellbound. So sit back, hit play, and let her incredible talent take you on a musical journey like no other.
