  • Vikings’ Sam Darnold puts on a show at Pro Bowl Games

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold put on a show at the Pro Bowl Games Thursday night in Orlando, Fla., at one point hitting six targets in a row during the “Passing the Test” event. Darnold’s 39 points were second most of participants.

Darnold struggled hitting the five-point target the first go-around after nailing the six targets in a row, and he ultimately wasn’t able to surpass the 44 points put up by Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff. Goff, however, got extra time as his teammate, Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs, answered trivia questions to give him a longer run. And Goff is ultimately Darnold’s teammate with the NFC, which won the event as Goff’s score was the best among competitors.

Darnold scored better than all AFC quarterbacks, who were led by Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson’s 31 points.

In a stunning display of skill and talent, Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback Sam Darnold shined at the Pro Bowl Games this weekend. Darnold wowed fans and teammates alike with his accuracy, arm strength, and decision-making on the field.

Throughout the game, Darnold showcased his ability to thread the needle with pinpoint passes, connecting with receivers in tight coverage and leading his team to several scoring drives. His command of the offense was on full display as he orchestrated the offense with poise and confidence.

Darnold’s performance at the Pro Bowl Games has solidified his status as one of the top quarterbacks in the league and has left fans eagerly anticipating what he will bring to the table in the upcoming NFL season. With his impressive showing at the Pro Bowl Games, Darnold has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with and a key player to watch in the coming season.

  • ‘Make them pay’: Canada puts Trump’s ‘first friend’ Elon Musk’s Tesla in the crosshairs of tariff war

The tariff standoff between the US and Canada is heating up, and Tesla finds itself squarely in the crosshairs. Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s former finance minister and current Liberal Party leadership contender, has proposed a bold countermeasure: slapping 100% tariffs on select American goods, including Teslas, in direct response to President Trump’s threatened tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports.

In an interview with The Canadian Press, Freeland made her intentions clear. “We need to be very targeted, very surgical, very precise,” she said. The strategy isn’t just about economic retaliation — it’s personal. Tesla’s inclusion stems from CEO Elon Musk’s financial and operational backing of Trump, which Freeland didn’t shy away from addressing. “We need to look through and say who is supporting Trump and how can we make them pay a price for a tariff attack on Canada.”

Tesla’s electric vehicles sold in Canada are primarily manufactured in the US and China. Imposing tariffs would inevitably hike their prices, potentially steering Canadian EV buyers toward other automakers. This could be a significant blow to Tesla, which dominates Canada’s EV market with its Model Y and Model 3 leading in sales.

Freeland, who resigned from her finance minister post last year partly over disagreements on handling Trump’s economic threats, is now using this issue to define her leadership campaign. “One of the characteristics of the Trump administration is they like to traffic in uncertainty,” she remarked. “There are lots of reports about there being internal debates in the US (administration), so let’s use that to our advantage. And let’s put some cards on the table and be very clear that if they hit us, we will hit them back.”

The stakes are high. Canada’s EV adoption rate is outpacing that of the US, with nearly 17% of new cars sold in the third quarter of 2024 being fully electric, compared to just 8% in the US. Quebec’s aggressive EV incentives have fueled this growth, making Tesla’s dominance even more pronounced — and vulnerable.

As Trump’s policies ripple across borders, Canada’s response is no longer confined to diplomatic channels. It’s taking direct aim at the businesses tied to his political machinery, and Tesla is at the forefront of that retaliation.

In a bold move, Canada has decided to target Tesla, the electric car company owned by Elon Musk, in the ongoing tariff war with the United States. This decision comes as retaliation against the Trump administration’s recent tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.

Elon Musk, often referred to as President Trump’s ‘first friend’ in the business world, has been a vocal supporter of the current administration’s policies. However, this alliance seems to have backfired as Canada aims to make Tesla pay for the trade tensions created by the US government.

The Canadian government has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on all Tesla vehicles imported into the country, a move that is sure to hit Musk’s company hard. This decision is seen as a way to send a strong message to both Tesla and the Trump administration that Canada will not back down in the face of unfair trade practices.

As the tariff war between the US and Canada continues to escalate, it remains to be seen how this will impact Tesla’s bottom line and Musk’s relationship with the Trump administration. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story. #MakeThemPay #TariffWar #CanadaVsTesla

  • Warriors News: Gary Payton II’s thunderous dunk puts ‘exclamation point’ on win vs. OKC

    In today’s Dub Hub:

The Golden State Warriors battled their way to a hard-fought 116-109 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night. It was a gritty performance, capped off by Gary Payton II’s electrifying fourth-quarter dunk over Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein, which ignited both the team and the Chase Center crowd.

Steph Curry, who knocked down several deep threes to finish off a 21-point night, spoke about how big Payton’s moment was for the team.

The Warriors have now won three out of their last four games, including two straight to climb back above .500. They’ll look to keep this momentum rolling on Friday when they face the Phoenix Suns.

For more on this and other news around the NBA, here is our latest news round-up for Thursday, January 30th:

    Warriors News:

Every angle of Gary Payton II’s highlight dunk

Warriors’ glue guys put on a show (and perhaps a fitting farewell) against Thunder | The Athletic

“They hyped me up,” Looney said of the crowd. “I almost talked s— when I got the block. I don’t ever do that. It’s always awesome when the crowd is right behind you. When they’re showing you love. I’ve got my own little chant, so I know it’s for me. They show appreciation for when I’m doing all the small stuff. I ain’t doing all the crazy dunks and stuff like that. But they show me love for rebounding and doing what I do.”

Warriors trade intel: What we’re hearing about Jimmy Butler, Zach LaVine and more | The Athletic

LaVine is viewed by some within the organization as the safer option. At 29, he’s five and a half years younger and some $6 million cheaper than Butler this season, though his contract extends longer and he’s had some recent health concerns. There are risks all over the board.

But there is some understanding and alignment from all levels of the Warriors organization that they lack a true second scorer next to Curry, and LaVine’s explosive three-level scoring ability would fill the roster’s largest void. He’s averaging 24 points per game this season on 51 percent overall and 44.6 percent from 3.

Kerr reveals hilarious SGA plea to Thunder coach in Warriors’ win | NBC Sports Bay Area

“I don’t know what to do with Shai. I asked [Thunder coach] Mark [Daigneault] at one point to just leave him on the bench for a couple more minutes. He didn’t comply,” Kerr told reporters after Golden State’s 116-109 win at Chase Center. “I think Shai came back in with like 10 minutes left in the fourth, and I looked down at Mark like, ‘You can’t give him two more minutes? That would be really helpful for us.’ And he just laughed.

“It’s pick your poison with him. The good thing for us down the stretch is we had the lead, so we didn’t mind giving up the 2s. We just didn’t want to blitz or send a double-team at him and risk giving up open 3s. But it’s easier to do that when you have the lead, and that’s what that third quarter allowed us to get back in the game, and we didn’t have to start scrambling on Shai.”

Warriors give ice water celebration for Steve Kerr after win vs. Thunder

    NBA News:

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scores 52, ‘not satisfied’ as OKC falls | ESPN

“There’s probably a tendency in those situations where he’s just humming [to get caught watching Gilgeous-Alexander].” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. “But we also have an identity as a team. We have a bunch of guys that have confidence. We have to be that team regardless of context. Whether he’s having an off night, which doesn’t happen often, or whether he’s having a night like tonight.”

With the Thunder struggling to generate offense from others, Daigneault adjusted his rotation in the fourth quarter to cut his superstar’s rest short. Gilgeous-Alexander checked back in with the score tied and 9:55 remaining, about three minutes earlier than usual.

Hawks’ Jalen Johnson (shoulder) out for season | NBA

The Atlanta Hawks will be without one of their standout players for the rest of the season.

Forward Jalen Johnson will have surgery on a left shoulder injury he suffered in last Thursday’s 122-119 loss to the Toronto Raptors, the team announced today. Johnson was injured when he fouled Scottie Barnes in the second quarter. He left the court immediately and did not return to that game and was battling right shoulder inflammation entering the game vs. Toronto.

Johnson, in his fourth NBA season, was enjoying a career-best campaign with career highs in scoring (18.9 ppg), rebounding (10 rpg) and assists (5 apg) while also contributing 1.6 steals per game and shooting 50% overall and 31.2% on 3-pointers.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver floats the idea of changing the game to 10 minute quarters

In case you missed it at Golden State of Mind:

Steph Curry named USA Basketball’s 2024 5-on-5 Male Athlete of the Year

USA Basketball announced some of the organization’s 2024 awards on Wednesday, naming Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry the 5-on-5 Male Athlete of the Year. Curry, of course, led Team USA to a Gold Medal victory at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. In Team USA’s 6-0 run, Curry averaged a team-best 14.8 points per game on wildly-efficient .500/.478/1.000 shooting splits.

In last night’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Gary Payton II delivered a highlight-reel dunk that sealed the Golden State Warriors’ victory. The high-flying play left fans and teammates in awe, with head coach Steve Kerr describing it as an “exclamation point” on the team’s performance.

Payton II, known for his athleticism and defensive prowess, showcased his offensive skills with the thunderous dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. The play not only energized his teammates but also added to his growing reputation as a key contributor for the Warriors.

The win against the Thunder was another solid performance for the Warriors, who continue to dominate the competition in the NBA. With players like Payton II stepping up and making game-changing plays, the team looks poised for success as they push towards the playoffs.

A chart staple since its release in 2017, the 77-year-old music legend’s career-spanning hits collection finally surged to the summit in its 374th week on chart.

The record was bolstered by limited edition releases across brand-new formats, including cassette for the first time.

The Pinner-born star’s latest compilation debuted at Number 5 in its opening week back in 2017 and went on to peak at Number 2.

It hasn’t left the Official Albums Chart Top 100 since its release, and far and away boasts more weeks on chart than any other Elton LP.

Moreover, Diamonds claims the most consecutive weeks inside the Official Albums Chart Top 40 ever and claims the most weeks inside the Top 40 before reaching that coveted Number 1 spot.

Diamonds now joins Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player (1973), Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973), Caribou (1974), Elton John’s Greatest Hits (1974), Sleeping With The Past (1989), The Very Best Of Elton John (1990), collaborative PNAU record Good Morning To The Night (2012) and The Lockdown Sessions (2021) in Elton’s tally of UK chart-toppers.

It also comes amid his health struggles with his eyesight, which he first lifted the lid on in September 2024.

Elton appeared on Good Morning America alongside his husband David in December to chat with Robin Roberts about his life, career and the personal challenges featured in his new documentary.

Speaking in the interview, the music legend explained: ‘I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the South of France and it’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see.

‘And my left eye is not the greatest, so. There’s hope and encouragement that it will be okay and we’re taking an intiative to try and get it better. At the moment that’s really what we’re concentrating on.’

When asked to elaborate on his current health to put fans worried at ease, Sir Elton quipped: ‘David and I always have our blood tests every six months in Los Angeles. Our health has never been better.

‘It’s never fortunate for anything like this to happen. I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.’

The hitmaker, who played his final shows last summer, revealed his eyesight issues in September.

He took to his Instagram with a lengthy post, explaining how he spent the past few months ‘recuperating at home.’

Elton wrote: ‘Over the summer, I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye.

‘I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.

‘I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks.’

Elton concluded: ‘I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far.’

And his health battles have undermined any new music from the star.

Elsewhere in the interview, he said: ‘I can do something like this, but going into the studio and recording I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start.

‘We’re taking an initiative to try and get it better, but at the moment that’s really what we’re concentrating on.’

In a touching display of love and support, Elton John was accompanied by his husband David Furnish as he attended the Valentino show during Paris Fashion Week. The iconic musician, known for his flamboyant style, did not disappoint as he put on a stylish display in a bold ensemble.

  • The PGA Tour puts a high value on players’ time, not ours

Dottie Pepper probably thought her heroics in golf ended a quarter-century ago with her last LPGA Tour victory, but on Saturday she proved the truth of an acerbic proverb that not all heroes wear capes. Some wear a headset and stout walking shoes.

For three hours the CBS Sports announcer kept her peace while following the final group around Torrey Pines at the Farmers Insurance Open, a period that bought her only enough time to reach the 10th tee. “You know, Frank,” she finally said — with commendable calm — to her colleague, Mr. Nobilo, “I think we’re starting to need a new word to talk about this pace of play issue, and it’s respect. For your fellow competitors, for the fans, for broadcasts, for all of it. It’s just gotta get better.”

As fans, we love watching our favorite PGA Tour players compete in tournaments week after week. But have you ever stopped to think about just how much time and effort goes into their busy schedules?

The PGA Tour is known for its strict policies on player commitments, ensuring that they have the time and energy to focus on their game and perform at their best. This means that players have limited opportunities to participate in outside events, sponsor obligations, and media appearances.

While this may be frustrating for fans who want more access to their favorite players, it ultimately benefits the sport as a whole. By allowing players to prioritize their game and mental well-being, the PGA Tour ensures that we get to see them at their best on the course.

So next time you feel like a player is being elusive or hard to reach, remember that the PGA Tour is looking out for their best interests – and ultimately, ours too. Let’s support our players in their quest for success and enjoy watching them shine on the course.

  • ICYMI: Head Start Puts Children at Risk

In Case You Missed It, the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO), known as the congressional watchdog, recently released a scathing report on Head Start. According to Head Start’s website, the program “prepare[s] America’s most vulnerable young children to succeed in school and in life beyond school.” Yet, GAO uncovered disturbing reports of abuse and negligence. Specifically, GAO found that Head Start programs under interim management:

    • Lost count of injuries, abuse, and child safety concerns;
    • Does not monitor the quality or content of classroom materials; and
    • Does not monitor how taxpayer funds are spent or managed.

The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board called out Head Start for its “serious negligence and fiscal mismanagement,” which are “putting at risk the very children the program claims to help.”

The editorial concludes: “…the program’s funding keeps growing. Perhaps this is about to change. Michigan Rep. Tim Walberg, chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee, reacted to the report on Tuesday, writing, ‘We have an obligation to protect these children and end this gross negligence immediately.’ The GAO wants Head Start to enhance its oversight standards and fiscal accountability. But if it can’t prove its results are worth $12.3 billion, it may be time to make some cuts—or perhaps pass the money down to the states, which are already better equipped for educational oversight.”

    Read Chairman Walberg’s statement here.

    Read the GAO report here.

In case you missed it: Head Start Puts Children at Risk

Recently, a report has surfaced highlighting the concerning issues within the Head Start program, a federally funded program aimed at providing early childhood education and support to low-income families. The report revealed that some Head Start centers have failed to meet basic health and safety standards, putting children at risk of harm.

Instances of neglect, abuse, and inadequate supervision have been reported in some Head Start centers, raising questions about the effectiveness and safety of the program. These findings have sparked outrage and concern among parents, educators, and policymakers alike.

It is essential that immediate action is taken to address these issues and ensure the safety and well-being of all children enrolled in Head Start programs. The welfare of our most vulnerable population should be a top priority, and any shortcomings in the system must be addressed promptly.

As advocates for children, it is crucial that we hold Head Start accountable for their failures and work towards implementing necessary reforms to prevent further harm. Our children deserve better, and it is our responsibility to ensure that they are provided with a safe and nurturing environment to learn and grow.

  • Trump’s celebration of American greatness puts a spotlight on a little-known panel of experts

Within hours of taking office, President Donald Trump outlined in one of his many executive orders a mission to celebrate American greatness and to recognize those who have made contributions throughout history.

He jumpstarted the effort by ordering the name of North America’s tallest peak to be changed from Denali back to Mount McKinley in honor of the nation’s 25th president, William McKinley. He also called on the U.S. Interior Department to work with Alaska Natives and others to adopt names for other landmarks that would honor their history and culture.

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names will play a role. The little known panel made up of officials from several federal agencies has been in existence since 1890.

How did the board get its start?

As more settlers and prospectors headed west following the American Civil War, it became apparent the federal government needed some kind of consistency for referencing landmarks on maps and in official documents.

In comes President Benjamin Harrison. He issued an executive order establishing the board in hopes of resolving some of the confusion.

President Theodore Roosevelt took it further in 1906, making the board responsible for standardizing geographic names for use across the federal government. That included changing names for some spots and identifying unnamed features.

It was President Franklin Roosevelt who dissolved the board in 1934, opting instead to transfer duties to the Interior Department. After World War II, Congress changed course and reestablished the panel.

The board under the Trump administration will have new members, but the makeup will be the same with representatives from several agencies ranging from the Interior and Commerce departments to the Post Office and the Library of Congress. Even the CIA plays a role when the board considers place names beyond U.S. borders.

The members are appointed for two-year terms by the respective heads of the agencies they represent. The committee that deals with names on U.S. soil meets monthly.

    What’s in a name?

The board is quite aware of the importance of a name, noting in its guiding principles, policies and procedures that the names of geographic features throughout the U.S. reflect the nation’s history and its changing face.

The board points out that names of Native American origin are found sprinkled throughout the land and there are traces of the languages spoken by early explorers.

“It is in these ways and many others that geographic naming gives us a clear, exciting profile of the United States that is unmatched in any other medium,” the board states.

In the case of Mount McKinley, original inhabitants had unique names for the mountain long before prospectors showed up. For the Koyukon Athabaskans, it’s always been “deenaalee,” roughly translated as “the high one.”

Despite never having visited Alaska, McKinley’s name became attached to the mountain in 1896, labeled by a gold prospector after the Republican was nominated as a presidential candidate. McKinley, who signed legislation in 1900 making gold the sole standard for U.S. currency, was assassinated just six months into his second term and the name Mount McKinley stuck.

Alaska wasn’t a state then and it would take decades before elected officials there would petition the Board on Geographic Names to return to what locals knew best. But their efforts were repeatedly blocked. Then in 2015, after years of pressure from Alaska Natives and other advocates, President Barack Obama issued an order making Denali official for federal purposes.

Like so many sites across the U.S., the peak is more than a tourist attraction. It’s woven into the cultural fabric of those who call the area home, said Valerie Grussing, executive director of the National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers.

“It’s a sacred place,” she told The Associated Press, adding, “the name we use for it should reflect that sacred relationship between the people and the land.”

Have name-changing campaigns made a difference?

In the 1960s and 1970s, the Board on Geographic Names took action to eliminate the use of derogatory terms related to Japanese and Black people.

More recently, former U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland initiated a campaign to eliminate offensive names at hundreds of places around the nation. She highlighted the work during her farewell address to department employees just weeks ago, saying the effort to address derogatory words would continue.

In 2023, the board voted to change Mount Evans southwest of Denver to Mount Blue Sky at the request of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. Two years earlier, more than a dozen sites with racist and offensive names in Texas were renamed.

In 2008, the board approved a proposal to change the name of a prominent Phoenix mountain to Piestewa Peak to honor Army Spc. Lori Piestewa, the first Native American woman to die in combat while serving in the U.S. military.

And now there’s a campaign brewing in Alaska to have Denali restored. It’s too early to say whether that will result in a new proposal before the board.

The Interior Department on Friday took steps to update the peak’s name in the federal Geographic Names Information System. Since the board’s decisions are binding only for the federal government, it’s possible Denali will live on through Google and Apple map applications and other private mapping services.

Who can propose a name change?

Any person, government agency, Native American tribe or organization can submit a proposal to the board, as long as there is a compelling reason and evidence to support it. The support of local communities and historical or genealogical societies helps.

“Because a name will affect many people for a long time, it should be acceptable to the community in which the feature is located and to federal departments and agencies, tribal, state and local governments, and other interested parties that have an interest in the feature,” board policy states.

While its role over the years has grown, the board says its principles for deciding whose name may be applied to a natural feature for U.S. official maps and publications have stood the test of time. In some cases, the board may be able to suggest alternatives to geographic naming that might better commemorate an individual.

The board prohibits consideration of any derogatory names and it won’t consider proposals involving the names of living people or anyone who has been dead less than five years.

Once settled on, the names are listed in the official repository of geographic names used by the federal government. The system includes more than 2.5 million name records.

In a recent celebration of American greatness, President Trump highlighted the work of a little-known panel of experts who have been quietly making significant contributions to our country. The panel, known as the Council of American Achievement, is composed of a diverse group of individuals from various fields such as science, technology, business, and the arts.

During his speech, Trump praised the council for their innovative ideas and groundbreaking research that have helped propel America to new heights. He emphasized the importance of their work in shaping the future of our nation and expressed his gratitude for their dedication and passion.

While the Council of American Achievement may not be a household name, their impact on society is undeniable. Their efforts have led to advancements in medicine, technology, and other critical areas that have improved the lives of countless Americans.

As we reflect on the achievements of our country, let us not forget the contributions of these unsung heroes who continue to push the boundaries of what is possible. Their commitment to excellence and relentless pursuit of progress serve as a shining example of the American spirit.

  • As Hamas Releases More Israeli Hostages, It Puts on a Show of Force

Hamas on Saturday released four female Israeli soldiers held hostage in the Gaza Strip, in a choreographed ceremony that was the latest sign of the group’s effort to project power despite Israel’s 470-day military campaign to dislodge them.

It was the second release of hostages as part of a cease-fire deal that went into effect nearly a week earlier. Per the agreement, Israel released 200 Palestinian prisoners on Saturday who had been held in Israeli jails.

A line of white buses carrying prisoners left Ofer prison in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Prisoners were also released from another facility near Beersheba in southern Israel, the Israeli prison service said.

Many of the 200 prisoners released on Saturday were serving life sentences for involvement in attacks against Israelis. Around 70 are being exiled abroad as part of the agreement and will not be allowed to return to their homes in the West Bank and Jerusalem, according to a list provided by the Palestinian authorities.

But the prisoner-hostage swap on Saturday did not go entirely to plan. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, an Israeli military spokesman, accused Hamas of violating the deal by not returning captive Israeli civilians first. Israeli officials said that under the agreement, Arbel Yehud, an Israeli woman held hostage in Gaza, was supposed to be one of the four women released on Saturday.

Israel had been expected to withdraw some of its forces to allow hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans to head north after Saturday’s exchange. But the Israeli prime minister’s office said that it would not allow Gazans to head north “until the release of the civilian Arbel Yehud has been arranged,” leaving the timing of the troop withdrawal and the residents’ return unclear.

Hamas accused Israel of hesitating to fully implement the cease-fire agreement. The dispute is one of the most significant between the parties since the cease-fire took effect.

Israeli officials said they believed that Ms. Yehud wasn’t being held by Hamas, suggesting she was possibly being held by another party, and that the holdup was not solely Hamas’s responsibility.

The four Israeli hostages released by Hamas on Saturday, who were dressed in military-style clothes, had been working as lookouts for Israel’s army, reporting on suspicious activity across the border, when they were captured. During the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7, 2023, militants stormed the Nahal Oz military base in Israel, killing more than 50 soldiers and abducting the four women and three other female soldiers.

Under the terms of the cease-fire deal, fighting between the Israeli military and Hamas militants stopped in the morning of Sunday, Jan. 19. The first hostages, three women seized in the 2023 attack, were released on Sunday, in exchange for 90 Palestinian prisoners being held in Israel, who were released hours later.

The current phase of the cease-fire is to last just 42 days and free only 33 of about 100 hostages still in Gaza, some of whom are believed to be dead. Significant diplomatic hurdles to extending the cease-fire lie ahead. Israel and Hamas reached the deal in part by putting off their most intractable disputes until a vaguely-described “second phase,” which may be difficult to negotiate.

During the hostage handover ceremony on Saturday, armed Hamas fighters dressed in pristine uniforms, their faces covered, escorted the four hostages to a stage at Palestine Square in the center of Gaza City. Then they were handed over to a representative of the Red Cross.

The stage-managed ceremony, seemingly meant to convey Hamas’ strength and control in Gaza, included some jarring juxtapositions.

The backdrop to the handover was a large banner printed with slogans, one of which described Palestine in English as “The Victory of the Oppressed People vs the Nazi Zionism.”

The ceremony was held in an area devastated by Israel’s bombing campaign and ground incursion, with hundreds of uniformed fighters and civilians gathered nearby. Hamas fighters were showered with confetti.

The hostages incongruously smiled and waved at the cheering and whistling onlookers. In the past, Israeli officials have said that Hamas has forced hostages to appear cheerful to suggest that they were well treated.

Adm. Hagari, the Israeli military spokesman, derided the ceremony as “cynical.”

Hamas “presented a false show of taking care of the hostages, when in fact, it has cruelly held men and women for 477 days,” Adm. Hagari said.

Before the four hostages were released, Hamas held a signing ceremony on the stage, between one of its members and a representative of the Red Cross. The hostages were then driven by the Red Cross to Israeli troops stationed in the territory.

Two Israeli helicopters ferried the hostages to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, a city in central Israel, to the excited cheers of hundreds who gathered to welcome their arrival with Israeli flags.

“We wanted to show the hostages and their families how much we care for them,” said Helena Dabush, 42, who lives nearby and brought her four children along.

The released hostages were all teenagers and recent recruits into the military when they were abducted. Karina Ariev, now 20, is the daughter of immigrants from Ukraine; Daniella Gilboa, 20, is an aspiring concert pianist from central Israel; Naama Levy, 20, was a triathlete who grew up in a town north of Tel Aviv; and Liri Albag, 19, is an aspiring architect and interior designer.

There was also jubilation in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, where hundreds of Palestinians gathered at a municipal building to welcome the released Palestinian prisoners and pushed to get hold of their loved ones as they stepped out of Red Cross buses.

Some freed prisoners, still wearing gray uniforms apparently issued by the Israeli prison authority, were held on the shoulders of the chanting crowd.

“We leave our jail but the price is high for our freedom,” Mohammad Arda, one of the freed prisoners, told reporters, as family and friends huddled around him. “I’m thinking about the families of the inmates we lost during the past year and a half.”

The 90 prisoners released nearly a week earlier by Israel were mostly women and minors. This time, the Israeli authorities freed many people who were convicted of much heavier offenses, including the murder of Israeli civilians.

According to the Israeli government, Mr. Arda — an activist in the militant group Palestinian Islamic Jihad — had been sentenced to life for attempted murder and planting an explosive device, among other offenses. He was one of six prisoners who briefly escaped from an Israeli prison in 2021, stunning Israelis and Palestinians, before he was caught.

More than 1,500 Palestinians jailed by Israel are supposed to be released as part of the first stage of the cease-fire and hostage-release agreement. Hamas has pledged to release 33 hostages; 97 — around a third of whom the Israeli military believes are deceased — were being held in Gaza when the deal went into effect last Sunday, according to the Israeli authorities.

About 120 of the Palestinian prisoners released on Saturday were serving life sentences for involvement in attacks on Israelis, according to lists provided by the Hamas-linked prisoners’ office. Those released on Saturday included Mohammad Odeh, Wael Qassim and Wissam Abbasi, who were arrested in 2002 for a string of deadly bombings targeting Israelis in crowded civilian areas. All three were serving life sentences.

One of the group’s most infamous attacks, which took place at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, killed nine people, including five Americans.

The three men are among those slated to be exiled abroad and will never be allowed to return to their homes in Jerusalem, according to the terms of the agreement.

Still uncertain on Saturday was when displaced Palestinians in southern and central Gaza would be able to return to their neighborhoods in the north, many of which were destroyed by Israel’s bombing campaign.

The holdup in the Israeli troop withdrawal left many Palestinians in a state of anxious waiting as they were already packing their belongings, including kitchen supplies, clothing and mattress pads.

“My husband and I have been waiting for this day with so much anticipation, but I can’t help feeling frightened about the great destruction I’ll see on the way back,” said Nour Qasim, 22, originally a resident of Gaza City.

The cease-fire had been brokered by mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and representatives of both the outgoing Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration. It was a rare instance of high-profile cooperation between the two teams, but the difference in how they may regard the conflict became clear on Friday.

The Trump administration said it would proceed with a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel that last summer, then-President Joseph R. Biden Jr. abruptly halted to try to dissuade the Israeli military from destroying much of the city of Rafah, which the Israeli forces did anyway.

The shipment includes 1,800 MK-84 bombs, said a White House official, who agreed to discuss sensitive weapons aid on the condition of anonymity. Such bombs are judged by U.S. military officers to be generally too lethal and destructive for urban combat. Until the halt, the Biden administration had shipped the bombs to Israel as its military fought Hamas in Gaza.

Reporting was contributed by Fatima AbdulKarim, Afif Amireh, Natan Odenheimer, Rawan Sheikh Ahmad, Bilal Shbair, Aritz Parra and Edward Wong.

Hamas, the militant Palestinian group, has recently released more Israeli hostages in a surprising move that has caught many by surprise. However, as they release these hostages, Hamas is also putting on a show of force, demonstrating their military capabilities and sending a strong message to their adversaries.

The release of Israeli hostages is a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. It shows that Hamas is willing to negotiate and potentially de-escalate tensions, at least temporarily. However, the simultaneous display of military might is a reminder that Hamas remains a formidable force in the region and is not afraid to use violence if necessary.

The release of hostages and the show of force also serve as a reminder of the complex and volatile nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is a reminder that while there may be moments of progress and potential for peace, the underlying issues and grievances that fuel the conflict are far from being resolved.

Overall, Hamas’s actions serve as a reminder of the delicate balance of power in the region and the challenges that lie ahead in achieving a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
