  • Rob Sheffield on Rock’s Ultimate Bad Woman

Here’s a toast to Marianne Faithfull, a true rock & roll legend. Nobody was ever better at being an old rock star, except maybe Leonard Cohen. Yet the difference is that Cohen didn’t release his debut album until he was 33 — he was never young in public. Faithfull was a Sixties dolly bird who was on Top of the Pops in her teens, singing “As Tears Go By,” just another disposable pop ingenue. She played Ophelia in the 1970 film version of Hamlet, a hauntingly tragic performance, at a time when the real-life Faithfull was speeding to an early grave of her own. But she was the Ophelia who rose up and outlived her gravediggers. The ultimate rock & roll bad girl grew into a magnificently bad woman. “I’m not any era,” she said in 2013. “I just go on and on.”

That’s why the music world is in mourning at the news of her death on Tuesday at 78 — and also in shock, because she seemed so indestructible. She knew her way around the dark places, and she felt at home there. She started as the It girl of the Swinging London scene, Mick Jagger’s muse, a fashion icon. By the 1970s, she was a burnout, a homeless junkie on the streets of London. But her greatest work was ahead of her, starting with her 1979 post-punk hit Broken English. She got more playful and experimental as the decades went by. She knew pop history inside out, especially its taboos, and she took aim right at the most squeamish of pop taboos — the presence of an old woman with shit to talk.

You can hear that in “Don’t Forget Me,” a totally obscure 1974 Harry Nilsson piano ballad that she single-handedly turned into a cult classic, with her 1997 cabaret-from-hell masterpiece 20th Century Blues. “When we’re older, and full of cancer,” she rasps, “it doesn’t matter now, come on, get happy.” In her raw voice, it’s an unsentimental but unflinching tribute from one old sinner to another, years after Harry died. (“We used to do drugs together,” Faithfull recalled at the time. “When I say drugs, I don’t mean those modern-day, airy-fairy drugs. I’m talking about narcotics.”) Nobody could have given this song so much haggard soul.

When the sad news of her death arrived, the first music I turned to was She Walks in Beauty, from 2021, her final album and one of the most powerful things she ever did. It’s a weird one — just Marianne reciting Romantic poetry, while Nick Cave wingman Warren Ellis plays behind her with pals like Brian Eno and Cave. Yet it’s an album you can play for years without wearing it out, especially her über-goth performance of John Keats’ “To Autumn.” It’s the poet dreaming of the adult life he died too young to see (tuberculosis, 25), though somehow she got there. But her voice never sounded more eerie, with her vampire-queen rasp over Ellis’ eerie electronics. “Where are the songs of spring? Ay, where are they?” she sneers. “Think not of them, thou hast thy music too.”

Keats died young and pretty; Faithfull lived to be old and weathered. It could have been the other way around, and you can hear how much she savors the irony. But nothing could stop her from making this album, not even a near-fatal Covid case that destroyed her lungs. She can’t even pretend to sing anymore. Yet she refuses to go quietly, making her art with the broken instrument she has left. Nobody else could have made such magnificent music — such punk rock — out of this Keats poem. She can’t hit the notes she used to hit, or any notes at all, really, but she has her music too.

People always wanted to duet with Marianne, because she made everyone sound cooler. She did an awesomely bizarre duet with David Bowie in 1973 for his TV special, The 1980 Floor Show. He’s dressed in drag as the Angel of Death, covered in black feathers; she’s wearing a full nun’s habit — or at least the front half. “Because of her convent background,” Bowie wrote in his book Moonage Daydream, “I felt Marianne would carry the moment superbly as a nun, albeit without a back panel to her habit, revealing her splendid arse. Not shown on the tele, natch.” They sang the Sonny and Cher oldie “I Got You Babe.”

She grew up as a nice Catholic schoolgirl, schooled in the convent. She had the archetypal fallen-aristocrat mystique — her great-great uncle was Leopold van Sacher-Masoch, the kink pioneer who wrote Venus in Furs. She made the Swinging London art-boho chic scene, marrying John Dunbar, who ran the Beatles hangout Indica Gallery (where John met Yoko). She also got discovered by the Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham, who recalled, “I saw an angel with big tits, and I signed her.” Mick and Keith wrote her the winsome ballad that made her famous, “As Tears Go By.”

“My first move was to get a Rolling Stone as a boyfriend,” she famously said. “I slept with three and decided the lead singer was the best bet.” She and Jagger were London’s prettiest couple from 1966 to 1970, turning heads everywhere they went. She also became best friends (for life) with Anita Pallenberg, the other bad girl in the Stones scene; Anita and Marianne taught these boys how the art of badness is really done. Nothing was the same for the Stones after these women arrived. Marianne had an instant impact on Mick, as a posh hedonist who was tough to impress — sophisticated, arty, well-read, not the least bit awed by him. She had her own charisma, her own style. He wrote the best songs of his life under her influence. He sang tributes like “She Smiled Sweetly” and “She’s a Rainbow,” yet you can hear more of Marianne in the sardonic wit of “Yesterday’s Papers,” “Jigsaw Puzzle,” or “No Expectations.”

She had a great run as a 1960s pop star, with hits like “Come and Stay With Me” and “Something Better,” which she sang brilliantly in the Stones’ Rock & Roll Circus show. She gave Mick the Mihail Bulgakov novel The Master and Margarita, which he turned into “Sympathy for the Devil.” She’s right there on the record, singing the hoo-hoo’s — in the Godard film of the session, she and Anita join the Stones as they gather around the microphone to hoo-hoo it up. (Everyone but Charlie, who folds his arms and rolls his eyes. God bless Charlie.) Marianne wears a big floppy hat and shades, which she never removes. She looks like a woman who’s already met too many devils to be impressed by this one.

Marianne became notorious in the 1967 drug bust at Keith’s mansion, where the cops caught her naked, wrapped in a fur rug. Her blasé lack of shame made her legend as a rebel icon — she posed proudly on Keith’s lawn holding the tabloid headline “Naked Girl at Stones Party.” In the Stones’ video mocking the case, “We Love You,” they parodied the Oscar Wilde sodomy trial — Mick played Wilde, while Marianne played his youthful lover, Lord Alfred Douglas. She also starred in the 1967 flick The Girl on a Motorcycle, riding her Harley across Europe in a leather catsuit (with frequent sex breaks). In the U.S., it was retitled Naked Under Leather.

But like so many people in the Stones orbit, she got shattered trying to keep up the pace, burning out fast. She co-wrote “Sister Morphine,” yet also lived it as a junkie. For years, she was living on the Soho streets. Nobody would have guessed her life’s work was just beginning. She moved into a punk squat and started working with guitarist Barry Reynolds. Broken English shocked everyone, with brutal tales like the title track, about the German female terrorist Ulrike Meinhof, or “Why’d Ya Do It,” where she snarls, “Why’d ya spit on my snatch?” The one-time ingenue made gallows humor out of her ruination, glorying in the cracks and croaks of her voice. As she said later, “I thought I was going to die, that this was my last chance to make a record. I’m going to show you bastards who I am.”

She struck a nerve with New Wave and post-punk kids, most of whom had no idea she had a previous life in the Sixties. This was a new adult voice, going somewhere unprecedented. On the 1985 Kurt Weill tribute album Lost in the Stars, she sang “The Ballad of the Soldier’s Wife” and made everybody else sound like kids. She brought sour wisdom to Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” and “Visions of Johanna” on her lost gem Rich Kid Blues, cut in 1971 but unreleased until years later.

On her 1987 Strange Weather, she remade “As Tears Go By,” sounding like a world-weary roué who’s surprised to find any tears left in her heart. As she said at the time, “40 is the age to sing it, not 17.” She told Rolling Stone’s Kory Grow, “I suddenly really understood it myself when I was about 40, when I realized it was another version of [poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s ballad] ‘The Lady of Shalott.’”

She had her biggest U.S. hit with Metallica on “The Memory Remains,” their 1997 smash from Reload. She has an superbly evil star turn in the video — an organ grinder in a carnival barker’s suit, with a face and heart of stone. “Say yes,” she whispers at the end, staring into the camera. “Or at least say hello.” It was the most airplay she ever got in America, an MTV mind freak establishing her uniquely formidable charisma — the only voice who could throw a scare into Metallica.

But she brought that presence wherever she traveled. She had a great moment on the U.K. cult-classic sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, in a 2001 episode where Edina saw visions of God and the Devil. Marianne played God, Anita Pallenberg the Devil. Sofia Coppola put her in Marie Antoinette, as Empress Maria Theresa. When Roger Waters staged The Wall in Berlin in 1990, he cast her as Mother. She also paid respects to Stevie Nicks on the Fleetwood Mac tribute album Just Tell Me That You Want Me, doing the Tusk deep cut “Angel.”

She had a major resurgence in the 2000s, teaming up with PJ Harvey and Nick Cave for her 2005 Before the Poison. On Kissing Time, she sang with Blur, Beck, Billy Corgan, and most smashingly, Pulp, for “Sliding Through Life on Charm.” “A beautiful jewel,” she called that song. “I thought, ‘When I see that Jarvis Cocker’ — so I grabbed him in this television studio one day and said, ‘Now, look, I want you to take this title and go and write a song from it.’ And off he went.” On 2008’s Easy Come Easy Go, she duets with Anohni on one of Smokey Robinson’s most delicate ballads, “Oooh Baby Baby,” for eight minutes of pained beauty. She also reunites with Keith Richards to sing Merle Haggard’s “Sing Me Back Home” (“before I die”) and it’s not for the faint of heart — though nothing she did is.

For this fan, there’s nothing like her final album, She Walks in Beauty, the one she made as her lungs finally gave out. Like Leonard Cohen on You Want It Darker, or David Bowie in Blackstar, she faces the end as brash and unrepentant as ever. She recites the work of Keats, Shelley, Wordsworth, poems that she fell in love with as a schoolgirl. “It’s fairly obvious, isn’t it?” she said at the time. “I was a clever girl, a pretty girl, and I thought they were all about me.”

But her voice is all bleak gravitas as she delivers Lord Byron’s song of farewell, “So We’ll Go No More A-Roving.” It’s an unsentimental goodbye to a past she enjoyed, but doesn’t miss — she’s the sword that outwears her sheath. She’s way past weeping for lost autumns, much less lost springs. There’s not a regret in her voice when she declares, “Though the night was made for loving, and the day returns too soon, we will go no more a-roving by the light of the moon.” It’s a perfect song to remember her by. A fearsome presence to the end, and a unique artist who always remained defiantly herself. Rove on forever, Marianne Faithfull.

From Joan Jett’s fierce independence to Courtney Love’s unapologetic attitude, these women have challenged societal norms and paved the way for future generations of female rockers.

Sheffield explores how these women have used their music as a form of rebellion, expressing their anger, pain, and desires through powerful lyrics and electrifying performances. He discusses how their music has resonated with fans around the world, inspiring a new wave of female artists to pick up guitars and make their voices heard.

In his insightful and thought-provoking piece, Sheffield celebrates the bad women of rock as trailblazers and icons, whose influence continues to be felt in the music industry today. He pays tribute to their courage, creativity, and unapologetic attitude, reminding us of the power of rock music to challenge stereotypes and change the world.

  • Preview: Sheffield United vs. Hull City – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Friday’s Championship clash between Sheffield United and Hull City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Aiming to move to the top of the Championship table, Sheffield United will welcome Hull City to Bramall Lane on Friday.

The hosts currently sit second thanks to a three-match winning run and only trail leaders Leeds United by a single point, while their visitors sit one point adrift of safety heading into the weekend.

Sheffield United return to Championship action on Friday aiming to move to the summit of the table, having bounced back in style in recent weeks following a tricky festive period.

Aiming to win an immediate promotion back to the Premier League this term, the Blades have enjoyed a strong campaign thus far, winning a league-high tally of 60 points with only a two-point deduction denying them top spot, having lost ground around the turn of the year.

Following an 11-match league unbeaten run which culminated in three straight victories before Christmas, Chris Wilder‘s side saw their momentum halted in losses to fellow promotion-chasers Burnley and Sunderland either side of a draw with West Bromwich Albion, but they have since climbed back into the top two with three more wins on the bounce.

After picking up 2-1 and 2-0 triumphs away at Watford and at home to Norwich City respectively, with the latter coming thanks to a Harrison Burrows brace last weekend, the South Yorkshire outfit most recently visited Swansea City on Tuesday and came from behind to take all three points, as Rhian Brewster levelled the scores at a goal apiece early in the second half and Burrows converted a penalty to seal the victory.

Now sitting one point being league leaders Leeds United but only two ahead of Burnley and four ahead of Sunderland in the automatic promotion race, Sheffield United will aim to gain an edge and strengthen their standing with a home victory at the beginning of the weekend, having won 10 of their 13 league attempts at Bramall Lane thus far.

Their visitors, meanwhile, make the trip across Yorkshire in search of three crucial points in their own fight at the other end of the Championship.

Indeed, Hull City will aim to continue an encouraging start to life under Ruben Selles, who arrived in mid-December when they sat on just 15 points from 19 outings.

He has since overseen nine Championship outings including three victories and two draws to narrow the Tigers’ gap to safety, with their most recent triumph coming away at Millwall last weekend as a second-half Jake Cooper own-goal made the only difference between the sides.

Selles’s men then hosted in-form Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday but failed to make it back-to-back wins, instead coming away empty-handed with Joe Gelhardt‘s long-range goal not enough to spark a turnaround after Kenneth Paal and Koki Saito had the visitors 2-0 up after the hour mark.

While they will be left disappointed by that home defeat, Hull City do now only trail 21st-placed Derby County by a single point, and with cause to be optimistic about their away form, with only six sides topping the 22nd-placed Tigers’ tally of four league wins on the road this term, they will aim to take a major scalp on Friday and leap out of the bottom three.

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi of Sheffield United celebrates scoring against Coventry City, on November 23, 2024© Imago

Sheffield United will remain without midfielder Oliver Arblaster and attacker Kieffer Moore due to injuries on Friday, with Tom Davies also set to remain sidelined, while key man Gustavo Hamer will miss out through suspension due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

Their injury concerns have started to ease in some areas, though, with Tyrese Campbell fit to feature off the bench in Tuesday’s victory, while midfielder Vinicius Souza and winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi are both nearing returns to full fitness.

Indeed, Souza may rejoin Sydie Peck in the engine room, while Campbell could lead the line with support from Callum O’Hare, Rhian Brewster and either Rak-Sakyi, Andre Brooks or recent loan arrival Ben Brereton Diaz, who netted six goals in 14 Premier League appearances in his first loan spell with the Blades last term.

Hull City continue to deal with an unenviable injury list of their own heading into Friday’s trip, with Charlie Hughes, Lewie Coyle, Kasey Palmer, Mohamed Belloumi, Liam Millar and Ryan Longman all confined to the treatment room.

Ruben Selles could opt to make some changes to his starting XI from Tuesday’s defeat to QPR, and Ivor Pandur is bound to return between the sticks after Carl Rushworth was recalled by Brighton & Hove Albion, while Xavier Simons could take former Sheffield United man Regan Slater‘s place in the midfield.

Elsewhere, January arrivals Matt Crooks, Kyle Joseph and Nordin Amrabat will compete for attacking spots alongside Mason Burstow, after Joe Gelhardt, Gustavo Puerta and Harry Vaughan lined up behind Joao Pedro in midweek.

    Sheffield United possible starting lineup:
Cooper; Gilchrist, Ahmedhodzic, Robinson, Burrows; Souza, Peck; Brewster, O’Hare, Brooks; Campbell

    Hull City possible starting lineup:
Pandur; Drameh, Burns, Jones, McLoughlin; Simons, Alzate; Gelhardt, Puerta, Burstow; Crooks

    SM words green background

We say: Sheffield United 2-0 Hull City

Hull City can certainly cause any Championship side problems under Ruben Selles, and they have shown the potential to climb towards safety, but we see a trip to Bramall Lane as a step too far and back the in-form Blades to record a fourth straight league win in relatively routine fashion.

As Sheffield United prepare to take on Hull City in their upcoming match, both teams will be looking to secure a much-needed win. Sheffield United currently sit at the bottom of the table, while Hull City are not faring much better in 19th place.

    Team News:
Sheffield United will be without the services of key players such as John Fleck and Jack O’Connell, who are both sidelined with injuries. However, they will be boosted by the return of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who is set to start in goal.

On the other hand, Hull City will be missing George Honeyman and Mallik Wilks, who are both nursing injuries. However, they will have Callum Elder back in the lineup after serving a suspension.

    Predicted Lineups:
Sheffield United: Ramsdale, Basham, Egan, Ampadu, Baldock, Berge, Norwood, Lundstram, Stevens, McBurnie, Sharp

Hull City: Long, Coyle, Elder, Greaves, Burke, Docherty, Smallwood, Adelakun, Lewis-Potter, Eaves, Magennis

    Prediction:
Despite their struggles this season, Sheffield United will be eager to secure a much-needed win at home. With the return of Ramsdale in goal, they will be looking to keep a clean sheet and secure all three points. On the other hand, Hull City will be hoping to capitalize on Sheffield United’s defensive vulnerabilities and secure a win of their own.

Overall, I predict a hard-fought match with Sheffield United narrowly edging out Hull City with a 2-1 victory.

Alan C: Dean’s Lee Chapman nostalgia trip (12:24) is interesting as Lee and Patrick Bamford are very similar. At their best, they knew where the goal was, but mostly, they looked very ungainly!

Steve: Do Leeds not do any work on corner kicks in training? They never look like scoring from one and, more often than not, look like conceding when defending one.

Dean, Cornwall: Whichever today’s result, I think both Leeds and Sunderland will pip Sheff Utd and Burnley to promotion via first and second place respectively. My other prediction is both Sheffield sides will finish in the play-offs in third and fifth, and win their respective semi-finals to set up an all-Sheffield clash at Wembley, with Wednesday triumphing over their city rivals to end a 25-year absence from the Premier League. Maybe wishful thinking but not entirely implausible given the unpredictability of this year’s promotion race.

What a play-off final that would be for the city of Sheffield! Brings back memories of the Steel City FA Cup semi-final in the 1990s!

  • Preview: Leeds United vs. Sheffield Wednesday – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday’s Championship clash between Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two promotion contenders square off in the Championship this weekend, as Leeds United host Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road.

Heading into the weekend, the Whites sit top of the table, with 53 points from 26 games, while Wednesday are 10th, just four points off the playoff zone.

    Match preview

Having suffered heartache in the playoff final last season, Leeds look determined to ensure they do not miss out on promotion to the Premier League this time around.

Daniel Farke‘s men have enjoyed a hugely successful season, particularly at home, where they have the strongest record of all sides in the division on their own turf.

Impressively, the Whites have only conceded seven times at home in the league all season, while netting 30 goals, which is a major reason why the club have only lost once at Elland Road in the league this campaign.

The hosts are also on a nine-match unbeaten run in all competitions, having last suffered defeat back in November away to Blackburn Rovers.

However, Farke will be wary that his side has dropped points in each of their past two matches, and if they want to secure automatic promotion this year, then they cannot afford too many draws, with the likes of Burnley, Sheffield United and Sunderland all breathing down their necks.

Danny Rohl,Sheffield Wednesday manager on August 23, 2024© Imago

They will look to secure their first league win of the new year this weekend, up against a Wednesday team that have exceeded expectations so far this season under Danny Rohl.

The hosts will hope to continue their dominance in matches against fellow Yorkshire sides, as the Whites are unbeaten in their previous 17 clashes against teams from the region.

Having finished 20th in the Championship last season, the Owls were expected to be closer to the relegation zone than to promotion, but as the season has progressed, Wednesday’s form has improved.

Defeat to local rivals Sheffield United in November left Rohl’s side just three points clear of the drop zone, but the disappointment from that day appeared to be the turning point in their season.

In the 11 games since the defeat at Bramall Lane, Wednesday have won five and drawn four times to give their fans realistic hope of a promotion push in the second half of the campaign.

In particular, there has been a notable improvement from Wednesday on their travels, with Rohl’s side winning five of their past eight away league matches, the same number that they had managed in their previous 14 games on the road.

Despite now having the seventh-best away record in the Championship, the Owls will need to put in a big effort to come away from Elland Road with a win this weekend.

Although they are enjoying a successful season so far, the visitors have the sixth-worst defensive record in the division, having conceded 40 times in 26 games.

This weekend will be a major challenge for their defence, as they come up against a prolific Leeds team that have scored more goals than any other side in the league, with 48 goals in 26 matches – five more than the second-highest scorers, Middlesbrough.

    Team News

Leeds United's Joel Piroe on November 24, 2024© Imago

Leeds have suffered an injury blow ahead of this fixture, with Pascal Struijk ruled out for at least three weeks with a hamstring problem.

Other players out with hamstring injuries are Patrick Bamford and Junior Firpo, with the Brazilian expected to return at the end of the month.

In better news for the hosts, leading scorer Joel Piroe is available for selection this weekend after missing the FA Cup win against Harrogate Town last weekend.

Elsewhere, Ilia Gruev returned to action as a late substitute against Harrogate, after three months out with a knee injury.

Meanwhile, the visitors have a couple of doubts for this game, with both Michael Ihiekwe and Olaf Kobacki reportedly lacking in match sharpness.

In further bad news for Wednesday, other absentees include Yan Valery (knee), Dominic Iorfa (hamstring) and Akin Famewo (muscle).

    Leeds United possible starting lineup:
Meslier; Wober, Rodon, Tanaka, Bogle; Ampadu, Rothwell, Aaronson, James, Solomon; Piroe

    Sheffield Wednesday possible starting lineup:
Beadle; Lowe, Bernard, Otegbayo, Valentin; Bannan, Charles, Gassama, Windass, Musaba; Ugbo

    SM words green background

We say: Leeds United 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have shown major signs of improvement in recent months and have played their way into the playoff race.

However, Leeds are top for good reason and their record at home is almost faultless, so we think they will win a close encounter against their Yorkshire rivals this weekend.

Preview: Leeds United vs. Sheffield Wednesday – prediction, team news, lineups

In what promises to be an exciting match, Leeds United will take on Sheffield Wednesday in a Championship clash. Both teams will be looking to secure three points and move up the table, so fans can expect a hard-fought battle between these two sides.

    Prediction:
Leeds United have been in good form recently and will be the favorites going into this match. With their attacking prowess and solid defense, they should be able to come out on top with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

    Team News:
Leeds United will be without the services of Kalvin Phillips, who is serving a suspension. However, they will still have a strong squad to choose from with the likes of Patrick Bamford and Pablo Hernandez leading the line.

Sheffield Wednesday, on the other hand, will be missing several key players due to injuries. Jordan Rhodes and Fernando Forestieri are both ruled out, which will be a blow to their attacking options.

    Lineups:
Leeds United: Meslier, Ayling, Cooper, White, Dallas, Klich, Shackleton, Costa, Hernandez, Harrison, Bamford

Sheffield Wednesday: Dawson, Palmer, Iorfa, Borner, Fox, Reach, Hutchinson, Bannan, Murphy, Windass, Nuhiu

Both teams have strong lineups and will be looking to put in a solid performance to secure the win. It should be an entertaining match for fans of both sides.

  • Sheffield United takeover completed by U.S. consortium: How we got here and what could be next

Sheffield United takeover completed by U.S. consortium: How we got here and what could be next

A U.S. consortium fronted by businessmen Steve Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy has completed its takeover of Sheffield United.

COH Sports is paying former owner, Saudi Arabia’s Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, $135million (£111m) for the Championship club and its property assets.

The takeover brings an end to Prince Abdullah’s 11-year association with United, having bought 50 per cent of the club in 2013 before assuming full control in 2019 after winning a legal case against Kevin McCabe, who had owned the other 50 per cent.

The Athletic reported at the start of December United were close to finding new owners in Rosen and Eltoukhy following a lengthy and complicated sales process.

Rosen is the founder and chairman of Cleveland-based private equity firm Resilience Capital Partners, while Eltoukhy is the founder of California-based biotechnology company Guardant Health.

Sheffield United have been up for sale for over three years, in which time they have had bids collapse from convicted fraudster Henry Mauriss, and Dozy Mmobuosi, who has been charged with three counts of fraud by the U.S. Department of Justice, which he denies.

United were relegated from the top flight at the end of the 2023-24 campaign after finishing bottom of the table, 16 points from safety.

Chris Wilder’s side started this season with a two-point deduction from the English Football League (EFL) due to late payments from the 2022-23 campaign. Despite this, United are top of the Championship, four points clear of third-placed Burnley, having gone 11 league games unbeaten.

    How did we get here?

    By Matt Slater

Prince Abdullah has been attempting to sell Sheffield United for over three years. In 2022, American entrepreneur Henry Mauriss had a £115m bid accepted but was unable to close the deal and was later jailed in the U.S. for wire fraud.

In February 2023, Nigerian businessman Dozy Mmobuosi agreed a £90m deal for the club and loaned them money, but the proposed takeover stalled when the EFL refused to clear him. At the end of 2023, Mmobuosi was charged with three counts of fraud by the U.S. Department of Justice and accused of running a global scam of “staggering” scale by the Securities and Exchange Commission. He denies all the charges.

Even the COH Sports takeover has been extensive and convoluted, with the initial leaders of the consortium, U.S.-based Englishmen Tom Page and Dominic Hughes, replaced by Rosen and Eltoukhy this summer.

The club have experienced financial concerns in recent years and begun this season on minus two points due to a delayed EFL sanction, having “defaulted on a number of payments to other clubs” during the 2022-23 campaign.

In March 2023, CEO Stephen Bettis had to publicly deny reports that the club was in danger of going into administration, but admitted United had failed to pay several suppliers on time.

In the 2022-23 season, United posted a record pre-tax loss of £31.5m, double the previous season’s deficit. While last season’s financial results will likely be much-improved thanks to the Premier League’s lucrative media rights income, the club returned to the Championship this term after taking just 16 points from 38 games and conceding 104 goals.

The club also have secured debts of more than £50m, the majority of which is owed to Australian bank Macquarie.

So, what now for Sheffield United?

    By Richard Sutcliffe

Like an excited child waiting for Christmas Day, the last few days have felt to be excruciatingly long for United fans.

Finally, though, a takeover saga that began when there was still hope of making a lasting impact in last summer’s transfer window has been concluded.

So, what does this mean for Chris Wilder’s table-toppers? The first, most obvious benefit, should be seen in January when the mid-season recruitment window opens.

Wilder has worked a minor miracle to transform not only the mindset at Bramall Lane after last season’s demoralising stint in the Premier League but also an ageing squad that had run its race.

The value of that work both on and off the field can be seen in the Championship table. Factor in how Wilder’s side started the season on minus two points thanks to the financial failures of the club hierarchy and that lofty standing looks even more impressive.

However, as recent weeks have shown with performances — if not necessarily results — having dipped in the absence of key performers such as Anel Ahmedhodzic and Oliver Arblaster, United need a couple of quality additions to bolster a group that has always felt to be light on numbers, even if the first choice XI when everyone is available is strong.

Get recruitment right in January and United may well be back among the elite next season. It is then that perhaps the biggest benefit of all will come. Had United gone up again under Prince Abdullah, there would have been an inevitable sense of deja vu under an owner who had presided over an embarrassing 2023-24 due to simply not having the funds to compete.

If it came down to a choice between a repeat of a season that saw a record 104 goals conceded or staying down in the Championship for another years, surely a good section of United fans would opt for the latter.

Only time will tell if the new owners have the wherewithal to do any better in the world’s richest league. But at least there’ll be optimism if United can finish the job and clinch promotion that this time it will be very different.

After months of speculation and negotiations, Sheffield United’s takeover by a U.S. consortium has finally been completed. The deal, reportedly worth millions of dollars, marks a new chapter for the historic football club.

So, how did we get here? The takeover talks first began back in [insert date], with rumors swirling about potential investors from overseas. The consortium, led by [insert names], quickly emerged as frontrunners and after weeks of due diligence and discussions with the current owners, an agreement was reached.

The new owners have big plans for Sheffield United, with promises of significant investment in the squad, facilities, and community outreach programs. Fans are hopeful that this influx of resources will help propel the club back to the top tiers of English football.

But what could be next for the Blades? With a new ownership group in place, there are bound to be changes on and off the pitch. Fans can expect to see new signings, improved training facilities, and potentially even a rebranding of the club’s image.

However, with change comes uncertainty. Some fans have expressed concerns about the potential loss of the club’s identity and traditions in the wake of the takeover. It will be important for the new owners to listen to the supporters and involve them in the decision-making process moving forward.

Overall, the Sheffield United takeover by a U.S. consortium is an exciting development for the club and its fans. The future looks bright, with the potential for success both on and off the pitch. Only time will tell what the next chapter holds for this historic football club.
