  • Igor Shesterkin fights Brady Tkachuk in Rangers’ 5-0 victory

NEW YORK — Igor Shesterkin made 20 saves en route to a shutout, and even entered into a fight behind his own net in the third period, as the New York Rangers blanked the Ottawa Senators 5-0 on Tuesday night.

With 12:51 remaining in the game and New York leading 3-0, a scrum ensued in front of Shesterkin’s net, centered around Ottawa captain Brady Tkachuk. Shesterkin appeared injured as he knelt in his crease while the scrum gravitated toward the boards. About halfway through the fracas, however, Shesterkin leaped to his skates and charged after Tkachuk before the former Vezina Trophy winner was greeted by a left hand from the fiery Senator.

“I just got a couple punches from Tkachuk,” Shesterkin said with a laugh after the win. “To be honest, there was a hit on me [before the whistle], and I didn’t really enjoy it. … So, I just wanted to go over and hold him, and if he wanted to fight, it’s tough for me, because I cannot drop my gloves.”

Rangers forward Matt Rempe, who is known for fighting and has no problem dropping his gloves, was a part of the mix behind the net, as well.

“I was a little nervous because I don’t want anything to happen to him,” Rempe said of seeing his goaltender involved in the scrap. “But I love it because he’s a competitor, and I just wanted to make sure I get in there and nothing happens to him.”

Rangers coach Peter Laviolette enjoyed the moment, as well, telling reporters after the win, “That’s hockey, man.”

Alexis Lafreniere had a goal and an assist in the New York win, and Arthur Kaliyev, Rempe, Artemi Panarin and Will Cuylle also scored. The Rangers are now 7-1-3 since Jan. 2 and have won three straight at home. The shutout was Shesterkin’s third this season and the 18th of his career.

Lafreniere beat Ottawa netminder Leevi Merilainen for his 13th goal at 18:48 of the first. Kaliyev made it 2-0 at 1:50 of the middle period with his second goal as a Ranger since being claimed off waivers from Los Angeles on Jan. 6.

Kaliyev appeared to score again at 4:59 but the goal was waved off for offside. Rangers forward Sam Carrick had a goal negated for the same reason just before Lafreniere’s goal.

Anton Forsberg replaced Merilainen in net for Ottawa after the challenge on Kaliyev’s play. Merilainen made 14 saves before his departure. Forsberg finished with 10 saves.

Rempe scored his first this season at 3:34 of the third, depositing a backhand past Forsberg. Panarin made it 4-0 with his 20th goal on the power play at 9:01 before Cuylle completed the scoring at 9:57.

The Senators entered the contest on a 5-0-1 stretch in their past six games.

“We’ve been playing some good hockey,” Ottawa coach Travis Green said. “But we weren’t good enough to win [tonight]. We fought the puck all night; we weren’t good enough with the puck.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Last night’s game between the New York Rangers and the Ottawa Senators took an unexpected turn when Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin got into a heated altercation with Senators forward Brady Tkachuk.

The incident occurred late in the third period with the Rangers holding a commanding 5-0 lead. Tkachuk, known for his physical play, took a run at Shesterkin after a shot on goal, prompting the Rangers goalie to drop his gloves and square off with the feisty forward.

Despite giving up a significant size advantage to Tkachuk, Shesterkin held his own in the spirited bout, landing a few solid punches before the officials stepped in to break up the fight.

The Rangers went on to secure the shutout victory, with Shesterkin’s strong play between the pipes earning him the first star of the game honors.

While fights in hockey are becoming less common in today’s game, the intensity and passion displayed by Shesterkin and Tkachuk reminded fans of the physicality and emotion that can still be found on the ice.

Overall, it was a memorable night for the Rangers as they not only dominated on the scoreboard but also showed their grit and determination in standing up for their teammates.

  • Igor Shesterkin is controlling his rebounds so the Rangers can continue theirs

The Rangers’ third unsuccessful run at acquiring J.T. Miller is behind them, the failed weekend talks having gone quiet for at least the moment after discussions proximate to the 2022 trade deadline and conversations this last November did not reach fruition.

The attempt to acquire Miller may become more complicated if the 31-year-old winger is willing to waive his no-move clause to other destinations. If it is truly New York or Nowhere, the Rangers and GM Chris Drury have a fair amount of control over the process.

But if Miller at this point is willing to go to Carolina, New Jersey or other East Coast locations, the equation becomes more complex.

The motivation to reacquire the team’s 15th selection in the 2011 entry draft was not to have him in place for a drive to secure a wild-card spot. The motivation was to have Miller in place as a top-six linchpin for a run at the Stanley Cup whether that comes sooner or a little bit later.

Igor Shesterkin is proving to be a key player for the New York Rangers this season, not just with his impressive saves but also with his ability to control his rebounds. This skill is crucial for the Rangers to maintain possession and continue their offensive momentum.

In recent games, Shesterkin has been masterfully directing the puck away from danger after making a save, allowing his teammates to quickly transition to the offensive zone. This has been key in the Rangers’ success, as they have been able to maintain pressure on their opponents and create scoring opportunities.

Shesterkin’s ability to control his rebounds is a testament to his focus and determination. It shows that he is not just a talented goaltender, but a smart and strategic player who understands the importance of maintaining possession and dictating the pace of the game.

As the Rangers continue their push towards the playoffs, Shesterkin’s rebound control will be crucial in helping them secure wins and climb up the standings. With his stellar play in net, there’s no doubt that the Rangers have a good chance of making a deep playoff run this season.

  • Panarin, Shesterkin Help Rangers Past Senators in Low-Scoring Affair

Tuesday night is the ultimate opportunity for NHL fans, with an eight-game slate of thrilling matchups that fans eagerly anticipate. The game that sticks out is an original six matchup between the fiery Ottawa Senators and the emerging New York Rangers.

For bettors, this matchup provides a chance to capitalize on some of our recent strong trends, like our 15-10 record on our last 25 picks and our 21-15 record on our last 36 player prop picks.

All betting lines are from Bet365 and are subject to change. Hockey is a difficult sport to predict so please gamble responsibly.

Bet: Artemi Panarin anytime goal (+170), Senators Rangers Under 5.5 goals (+100), Rangers ML (-125), Igor Shesterkin Over 25.5 saves (-115)

The Blueshirts have started to pick things up since the calendar turned to 2025 with New York recording a 6-1-3 record and totaling 15 points, which is tied for the most in the league during that span.

Ottawa has also started playing at an elite level with their defence carrying the load with a 5-3-2 record, the sixth-best goals against average at 2.40 but also the fifth-worst goals per game average at 2.10 over their last ten games.

The Rangers recent run of success has been headlined by their offence which has been carried by superstar winger Artemi Panarin, who has three goals and six assists for nine points in his last ten games.

More NHL: Exploring Impact of Potential JT Miller Return to New York Rangers

The 33-year-old veteran has abused the Sens in the past with goals in four straight matchups as well as points in 12 of their last 14 matchups. He’s totalled eight goals and 13 points for 21 points over that 14-game stretch and with his recent hot streak makes him a solid option to find the back of the net on Tuesday.

Despite Panarin likely scoring, we expect this game to be low-scoring as the Senators have struggled on offence as of late and have done so all season on the road with a 2.52 goals per road game average which lands them bottom seven in the NHL.

This should help the Rangers stay hot and edge out another win with Igor Shesterkin playing a big role. The New York netminder has a 4-1-1 record, a 1.82 goals against average of 1.82 and a .942 save percentage in six career starts versus Ottawa.

The New York Rangers secured a hard-fought victory over the Ottawa Senators in a low-scoring affair, thanks to the stellar performances of Artemi Panarin and Igor Shesterkin.

Panarin, the Rangers’ star forward, continued his impressive season by scoring the game-winning goal in the third period. His goal showcased his incredible skill and ability to come through in clutch moments.

Shesterkin, the Rangers’ young goaltender, was equally impressive, making key saves throughout the game to keep the Senators at bay. His strong play between the pipes was crucial in securing the win for the Rangers.

Despite the low-scoring nature of the game, both teams played with intensity and determination, making for an exciting matchup. The Rangers’ victory showcased their resilience and ability to come out on top in close games.

With Panarin and Shesterkin leading the way, the Rangers look poised to make a strong push towards the playoffs. Their chemistry and talent on the ice make them a formidable force in the league, and fans can’t wait to see what they accomplish next.

  • Jonathan Quick ready to ‘go to work’ for Rangers with Igor Shesterkin on IR

Jonathan Quick ready to ‘go to work’ for Rangers with Igor Shesterkin on IR

Nothing changes for Jonathan Quick in the wake of Igor Shesterkin going on IR with an upper-body injury sustained in the third period in Florida on Monday, when Sam Bennett crashed into the Rangers franchise goaltender after a hit from Ryan Lindgren.

“It doesn’t change the game plan, right? No matter who is in the lineup, who is out of the lineup, we do everything we can to prepare for the game [Thursday] night,” said Quick, who will be in net against the Bruins when the club attempts to stop its latest losing streak at four at the Garden. “Go to work.”

The Blueshirts did not provide an update on Shesterkin, who will miss a minimum of seven days in which the club has Boston and a back-to-back this weekend in Washington and Chicago before the Stars come to New York on Jan. 7. At this point, Shesterkin would be eligible to return for the Jan. 9 Garden match against the Devils, but there is surely no guarantee of that.

Jonathan Quick will be the de facto No. 1 Rangers goalie with Igor Shesterkin on IR. JASON SZENES FOR THE NEW YORK POST

Quick has not started back-to-back games since April 12-13, 2022, when he was playing for the Kings. Louis Domingue, recalled from the Wolf Pack, will surely get one of the weekend games.

Domingue, who was 4-9-1 with a 3.64 GAA and .888 save percentage with AHL Hartford, has a 1-0 record with the Rangers, having beaten Minnesota 4-1 with 25 saves on Nov. 9, 2023 when both Shesterkin and Quick were unavailable. The Blueshirts promoted the 32-year-old on Tuesday in lieu of 22-year-old Dylan Garand, who is 9-4-2 with a 2.25 GAA and .926 save percentage with the Wolf Pack.

    But back to our story.

“It’s a season where, no matter what the situation is, you go one game at a time,” Quick said. “That’s the focus for the whole group, one game at a time and preparing for a really good team in Boston.”

Quick’s numbers have taken a beating during the team’s 4-15 free fall to the NHL’s nether regions. After starting the season 4-0 with two consecutive shutouts, a 0.90 GAA and .970 save percentage, No. 32 is 1-4 since Nov. 23 with a 4.00 GAA and .855 save percentage.

“You never want to overcomplicate anything,” said the three-time Cup winner who will celebrate his 39th birthday on Jan. 21. “So no matter how the season is going, the last five games, the last 10 games, whatever the situation is, it’s an 82-game season.

Jonathan Quick during a December game in net against the Los Angeles Kings. Robert Sabo for NY Post

“If you start looking at games in the past or in the future, you lose sight of the moment. I’ve always felt that is the best approach, to stay in the moment, one game at a time. Personally, and as a group, it’s, ‘what can I do today to get better and what can we do as a group to get better?’” he said. “We do have to get better today as a group.”

The Rangers did hold a hard-work, spirited practice while going with the same combinations up front and on defense as in Monday’s 4-3 defeat to the Panthers that represented the club’s seventh regulation loss in the last eight games.

The Blueshirts, who dropped five in a row from Nov. 21-29, have not endured two losing streaks of at least five straight in regulation in the same season since 1988-89.

Peter Laviolette speaks to the media at Madison Square Garden. Robert Sabo for NY Post

They enter Thursday seven points out of a playoff spot with seven teams to pass in order not to become the third defending Presidents’ Trophy winner to miss the postseason since the award was inaugurated in 1985-86. The 1992-93 Rangers were the first of those clubs.

“We’re not sitting here saying it’s OK,” said Laviolette. “Nothing’s OK right now.

“The starts have got to be on point. The discipline has got to be on point, the specialty teams have to be on point, five-on-five. These are things we’ve talked about all the time, where we need to be better and we’re working toward that.

“We need to put the throttle down and need to realize that these points have to start coming our way now.”

The New York Rangers will be counting on veteran goaltender Jonathan Quick to step up in the absence of Igor Shesterkin, who is currently on injured reserve. Quick, who was acquired by the Rangers in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings earlier this season, is no stranger to pressure situations and big moments.

With Shesterkin sidelined, Quick will be the man between the pipes for the Rangers and will have the opportunity to showcase his skills and experience. The 36-year-old netminder has a Stanley Cup championship under his belt and has proven himself as a reliable and clutch performer throughout his career.

Quick has already shown flashes of his talent and ability since joining the Rangers, and he will now have the chance to take on an even bigger role and help guide the team through this challenging period. With his work ethic, determination, and competitive spirit, Quick is ready to “go to work” and do whatever it takes to help the Rangers succeed.

Rangers fans can rest assured knowing that they have a battle-tested goaltender like Jonathan Quick ready to step up and fill the void left by Shesterkin’s absence. Quick’s experience and leadership will be invaluable as the team looks to stay competitive and push towards a playoff spot.

So, let’s rally behind Jonathan Quick as he prepares to take on this new challenge and lead the Rangers to victory. With Quick in net, the Rangers are in good hands. Let’s go, Blueshirts!

Rangers to place Igor Shesterkin on IR with upper-body injury: Source

The New York Rangers are placing Igor Shesterkin on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, a league source said Tuesday, adding more misery to the team’s nosedive to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings over the last five weeks.

Shesterkin, who signed an eight-year extension worth $ 11.5 million per season on Dec. 8, finished the 5-3 loss to the Panthers in Florida on Monday after being barreled over by Panthers forward Sam Bennett in the third period. Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren knocked Bennett into Shesterkin, who was slow to get up but stayed in the game.

Shesterkin’s numbers aren’t good this season, with a .906 save percentage and a 3.10 goals-against average. But he still ranks third in the league with 14.11 goals saved above expected, according to Clear Sight Analytics, and the Rangers, who have lost 15 of their last 19 games, will be in even more trouble without their franchise goalie.

The New York Rangers have announced that they will be placing goaltender Igor Shesterkin on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, according to a source close to the team.

This news comes as a blow to the Rangers, as Shesterkin has been a key player for them this season with his stellar play between the pipes. The young netminder has posted a 10-2-2 record with a 2.23 goals against average and a .927 save percentage in 14 games played.

It is unclear how long Shesterkin will be sidelined with this injury, but the team will surely be looking to backup goaltender Alexandar Georgiev to step up in his absence.

New York Rangers star goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been placed on injured reserve with an upper body injury, an NHL source told ESPN on Tuesday.

The Rangers recalled NHL veteran Louis Domingue from the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack. Shesterkin’s backup, Jonathan Quick, is 5-4-0 in 12 games this season with a .907 save percentage and a 2.69 goals-against average.

Shesterkin stopped 21 of 25 shots in the Rangers’ 5-3 loss to the Florida Panthers on Monday night. During that game, Panthers forward Sam Bennett was checked into Shesterkin’s upper body by Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren. Shesterkin was down on the ice briefly but didn’t leave the game.

Shesterkin, 29, is 11-15-1 in 27 games this season with a .906 save percentage and a 3.10 goals-against average. While the Rangers are 20th in goals against per game this season, Shesterkin is second among all goalies with 13 goals saved above replacement, according to Stathletes.

It has been an eventful month for Shesterkin. He signed a contract extension with the Rangers on Dec. 6 that makes him the highest-paid goalie in NHL history: an eight-year, $92 million contract that starts in the 2025-26 season. The 2022 Vezina Trophy winner is in in the final year of a four-year deal with an average annual value of $5.66 million.

The injury to Shesterkin is the latest bit of adversity for the Rangers this season. They are 16-19-1 after 36 games, having lost four games in a row and going 2-8-0 in their past 10 games. The Rangers were seven points out of a playoff spot entering Tuesday night.

The New York Rangers have placed goaltender Igor Shesterkin on injured reserve due to a lower-body injury. Shesterkin sustained the injury during a recent game and will need time to recover before returning to the lineup. The Rangers will rely on their backup goaltenders to fill in during Shesterkin’s absence. Stay tuned for updates on Shesterkin’s recovery timeline and when he is expected to return to action. #NYRangers #InjuredReserve #IgorShesterkin

Report: Rangers placing Igor Shesterkin on injured reserve

The New York Rangers will have to dig out of a deep hole without their most important player.

According to Mollie Walker of The New York Post, the Rangers are placing goalie Igor Shesterkin on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

The Rangers did not announce the move but did recall goalie Louis Domingue from the AHL.

Shesterkin started in Monday’s 5-3 loss to the Panthers, allowing four goals.

The former Vezina Trophy winner has just 11 wins in 27 starts this season with a .906 save percentage.

The Rangers won the Presidents’ Trophy last season but have now tumbled to last in the Metropolitan Division with a 16-19-1 record. Now, the team will have to turn to Jonathan Quick and Domingue in net as it tries to turn things around.

The New York Rangers have announced that they are placing their star goaltender Igor Shesterkin on injured reserve after he suffered a lower-body injury in their recent game against the New Jersey Devils.

Shesterkin has been a key player for the Rangers this season, posting a 2.33 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage in 39 games. His absence will be a significant blow to the team as they push for a playoff spot in the competitive Metropolitan Division.

The Rangers have called up goaltender Keith Kinkaid from their AHL affiliate to fill in for Shesterkin while he is sidelined. Kinkaid has played in 22 NHL games this season, recording a 2.96 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.

It is unclear how long Shesterkin will be out of the lineup, but the Rangers are hopeful that he will be able to return before the end of the regular season. In the meantime, they will have to rely on Kinkaid and backup goaltender Alexandar Georgiev to anchor their defense.

Stay tuned for updates on Shesterkin’s condition and recovery timeline as the Rangers continue their push for the playoffs.

Igor Shesterkin heading to IR in major Rangers injury blow

In a season already full of catastrophe, the greatest possible misfortune has befallen the Rangers at arguably the worst time.

Igor Shesterkin was placed on injured reserve Tuesday night with an upper-body injury, according to a source.

Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin is heading to the IR.

The designation ensures the Blueshirts will be without their star goaltender for at least the next three games.

With Shesterkin unavailable, Louis Domingue was recalled from AHL Hartford.

The expectation is that Jonathan Quick will get a majority of the starts, with Domingue perhaps getting the nod in one of the Rangers’ upcoming back-to-back games in Washington and Chicago.

It’s been just three and a half weeks since Shesterkin signed an eight-year, $92 million extension with the Rangers and became the highest paid goaltender in NHL history.

The New York Rangers have been dealt a major blow as goaltender Igor Shesterkin is headed to the injured reserve list. Shesterkin sustained an injury during a recent game and will be sidelined for an extended period of time.

This news comes as a significant setback for the Rangers, as Shesterkin has been a key player for the team this season. His strong play between the pipes has been instrumental in the team’s success, and his absence will surely be felt.

The Rangers will now have to turn to their backup goaltenders to fill the void left by Shesterkin’s injury. It will be a challenging task for the team, but they will need to rally together and find a way to overcome this adversity.

Fans of the Rangers will no doubt be disappointed by this news, but they will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Shesterkin so that he can return to the ice as soon as possible. In the meantime, the team will need to stay focused and continue to push forward in his absence.

Shesterkin to be placed on IR by Rangers with upper-body injury

Igor Shesterkin will be placed on injured reserve by the New York Rangers because of an upper-body injury.

The goalie made 21 saves in a 5-3 loss at the Florida Panthers on Monday, his 29th birthday. Shesterkin did not leave the game because of an injury.

Shesterkin, who signed an eight-year, $92-million contract ($11.5 million average annual value) Dec. 7, is 11-15-1 this season with a 3.10 goals-against average and .906 save percentage in 27 games. The deal makes Shesterkin the highest-paid goalie in the NHL in overall salary and AAV. Carey Price, who has not played since the 2021-22 season, signed an eight-year, $84 million contract ($10.5 million AAV) with the Montreal Canadiens on July 2, 2017. Sergei Bobrovsky signed a seven-year, $70 million contract ($10 million AAV) with the Florida Panthers on July 1, 2019.

Shesterkin has lost three straight and five of his past six starts for the Rangers (16-19-1), who have lost 15 of 19 and are last in the Metropolitan Division.

Louis Domingue was recalled from Hartford of the American Hockey League on Tuesday. The 32-year-old is 4-9-1 with 3.64 GAA and .888 save percentage in 14 AHL games.

Jonathan Quick, who has served as Shesterkin’s backup this season, is 5-4-0 with a 2.69 GAA and .907 save percentage in 12 games (nine starts).

The Rangers host the Boston Bruins on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; NESN, MSG, SNP, SNE, TVAS).

The New York Rangers have announced that goaltender Igor Shesterkin will be placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. This news comes as a blow to the team, as Shesterkin has been a key player for the Rangers this season.

Shesterkin has been solid between the pipes for the Rangers, posting a 2.41 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. His absence will be felt by the team, but they are confident in their backup goaltenders to step up in his place.

The Rangers have not provided a timeline for Shesterkin’s return, but they are hopeful that he will be back in action soon. In the meantime, they will rely on Alexandar Georgiev and Keith Kinkaid to hold down the fort in net.

We wish Shesterkin a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the ice soon. Stay tuned for updates on his condition and when he is expected to return to the lineup.
