  • NHL On Tap: Islanders look to extend winning streak to 8 against Panthers

Welcome to the NHL On Tap, a daily look at the games on the NHL schedule. There are nine games on the schedule for Sunday, including one televised nationally in Canada.

    Games of the day

New York Islanders at Florida Panthers (6 p.m. ET; SCRIPPS, MSGSN, TVAS)

The Islanders (24-20-7) are on an absolute heater, winning their seventh straight against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. It’s the longest active winning streak in the NHL, and they will try to keep it going against the defending Stanley Cup champions in the second of a back to back. The Islanders are 10-2-0 in their past 12 games and have moved to within three points of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Forward Kyle Palmieri has five points (two goals, three assists) in his past five games. Florida (31-19-3) can extend its win streak to three games after defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 5-1 on Saturday. Forward Matthew Tkachuk, who will play for Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off, has seven points (three goals, four assists) in his past four games.

New Jersey Devils at Buffalo Sabres (1 p.m. ET; MSGSN, MSG-B, SN)

Tage Thompson will look to help the Sabres (20-26-5) extend their winning streak to three games when they host the Devils (29-18-6). The Buffalo forward has five points (three goals, two assists) in his past two games. He had a hat trick and assist in a 7-2 win against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday and an assist in a 4-3 win against the Nashville Predators on Friday. Thompson has points in seven of his past eight games (six goals, five assists). He leads Buffalo with 45 points (25 goals, 20 assists) in 46 games. Timo Meier can extend his point streak to five games. The New Jersey forward has six points (one goal, five assists) in his past four. The Devils have won three of their past four games. Jake Allen made 24 saves for his third shutout of the season in a 5-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.

Philadelphia Flyers at Colorado Avalanche (3 p.m. ET; NBCSP+, ALT, SN1)

Martin Necas will play his fifth game with the Avalanche (30-21-2) since being acquired in a trade from the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 24 and can extend his point streak (one goal, four assists) to four games. He has 60 points (17 goals, 43 assists) in 53 games. Colorado is 2-2-0 in the four games since acquiring Necas and forward Jack Drury in a three-team trade for forward Mikko Rantanen. Necas scored his first goal for Colorado in a 5-0 win against the St. Louis Blues on Friday. Mackenzie Blackwood made 19 saves for the shutout. The Flyers (23-24-6) have not scored in their past two games. They lost 3-0 against the New York Islanders on Thursday and 5-0 at the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday. Philadelphia is 1-4-0 in its past five games.

    Other Sunday games

Vegas Golden Knights at New York Rangers (6 p.m. ET; SCRIPPS, MSG, SNW, SNO, SNE, SN360)

The Golden Knights (31-15-6) open a four-game road trip at the Rangers (24-23-4). Vegas is tied with the Edmonton Oilers (68 points) at the top of the Pacific. Forward Jack Eichel, who will play for Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off, had a seven-game point streak end in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday. He has 10 points (five goals, five assists) in his past eight games. Forward J.T. Miller, who will also play for Team USA, scored two goals in his debut with Rangers in a 6-3 loss at the Boston Bruins on Saturday. Miller was acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in for forward Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini and a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft on Friday. The Rangers have lost three in a row following a 10-game point streak (7-0-3). Rangers goalie Jonathan Quick will try again for his 400th NHL win. He hasn’t won since Jan. 2.

Montreal Canadiens at Anaheim Ducks (4 p.m. ET; KTTV, Victory+, TSN2, RDS)

Anaheim forward Mason McTavish has six goals in his past five games. He had a four-game goal streak end in a 4-1 loss at the Calgary Flames on Thursday, which ended a three-game winning streak for the Ducks (21-24-6). The Canadiens (24-22-5) lost 4-0 to the Minnesota Wild on Thursday with Minnesota goalie Marc-Andre Fleury recording a 19-save shutout in likely his final game in Montreal. The Canadiens will look to end a four-game skid (0-3-1).

Columbus Blue Jackets at Dallas Stars (6 p.m. ET; FDSNOH, Victory+)

Dallas forwards Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz can each extend his point streak to five games. Hintz has eight points (three goals, five assists) and Robertson has seven points (four goals, three assists) in the past four. Dallas (33-17-1) has won four in a row. The Blue Jackets (26-19-7) will be looking for their fourth straight win. Columbus is 10-2-1 in its past 13 games. Forward Kent Johnson has seven points (three goals, four assists) on a six-game point streak and defenseman Zach Werenski (Team USA) has six points (two goals, four assists) on a five-game point streak.

St. Louis Blues at Utah Hockey Club (7 p.m. ET; FDSNMW, Utah16)

The Blues (23-25-4) will be looking to end a four-game skid (0-4-0). St. Louis has been shut out twice in its past three games. Utah (21-21-9) is winless in its past four (0-2-2). Forward Clayton Keller has 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in his past nine games.

Detroit Red Wings at Vancouver Canucks (8 p.m. ET; SNP, TVAS(JIP), FDSNDET)

The Red Wings are 13-4-1 since Todd McLellan was hired as coach on Dec. 27. Detroit (26-21-5) is on a five-game winning streak. Forward Dylan Larkin (Team USA) has 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in his past 11 games. Defenseman Quinn Hughes (Team USA) has 12 points (five goals, seven assists) on an eight-game point streak for the Canucks (23-18-10).

Calgary Flames at Seattle Kraken (9 p.m. ET; KNH, KING 5, KONG, SNW, SNO, SNE, SN1)

Seattle forward Eeli Tolvanen will look to extend his point streak to five games. He has five points (four goals, one assists) in his past four games for the Kraken (23-27-3). The Flames (25-19-7) are playing the second game of a back to back. They lost 3-1 against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

The New York Islanders are on a hot streak, winning their last seven games. They will look to extend that streak to eight as they face off against the Florida Panthers tonight.

The Islanders have been playing some of their best hockey of the season, with strong performances from players like Mathew Barzal, Brock Nelson, and Semyon Varlamov. Their defense has also been stellar, allowing only 13 goals in their last seven games.

On the other hand, the Panthers have been struggling as of late, losing their last three games. They will be looking to bounce back and get back on track with a win against the Islanders.

It should be an exciting matchup between these two teams, as the Islanders look to continue their winning ways and the Panthers look to turn things around. Tune in tonight to see which team comes out on top!

  • USC women run win streak to 15 games, continue historic start to season

Playing its first home game in 18 days, the USC women’s basketball team gave an impressive crowd inside Galen Center what it came to see Thursday night.

The No. 4-ranked Trojans built a quick double-digit lead in the first quarter and went on to close out an 82-69 win over Minnesota, running their win streak to 15 games — the longest for the program since the 1982-83 season.

Kiki Iriafen led the way with 23 points and 11 rebounds on 9-of-11 shooting, JuJu Watkins had 20 points and 11 boards and freshman Avery Howell added 12 points off the bench as the Trojans improved to 19-1 overall — the best start for USC since 1981-82 — and 9-0 in the Big Ten.

Sophie Hart had 18 points and 8 rebounds for Minnesota (18-4, 6-4) while Mallory Heyer added 17 points and 7 boards.

That the Trojans made it look so easy yet again against one of the better teams in the Big Ten was the latest reminder that they are scripting a very special season.

“It was nice to be home. Our crowd is continuing to be amazing. It was a long time that we didn’t get to play here,” USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “Minnesota is a really good team. I told the team a number of times, they had the same number of wins as us. They’re at the top section of the conference, and we thought we took care of business.”

USC had its long stretch away from home in part because its Jan. 15 home game vs. Northwestern was postponed in the wake of the fires across Los Angeles.

In their return to Galen Center, the Trojans were without starting center Rayah Marshall due to injury and Watkins started the game 0 for 10 from the field in the first half before finding her rhythm offensively.

None of that mattered as the Trojans led 25-15 after the first quarter led by 9 points from Iriafen and 6 from Talia von Oelhoffen.

The game never got closer than 6 points the rest of the way. Minnesota opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run, but USC scored 10 of the next 12 points — including 7 straight from Watkins — to pull away comfortably.

“We didn’t know that Rayah wasn’t going to play until this morning, so I thought other people stepped up finding different ways to win,” Gottlieb said. “I think our freshmen, who got significant minutes, were really, really good and they keep getting better, which is exciting. And at the same time, I think our standards are really high — we could have been cleaner offensively and defensively in that second half so we’ll have some good film to learn from it as well.”

As for Watkins’ slow start …

“I thought her teammates really lifted her up. The fact that people are going to continue to give us open 3s when she’s crowded and we continue to knock them down — that’s the second game in a row that I think we’ve made 11 3s — I think will eventually make people really have to make decisions,” Gottlieb said. “But I think she’s a very mentally tough human being and basketball player and finds a way at some point to figure it out. … I don’t think any of us were surprised the shots went down in the second half.”

Iriafen notched her seventh double-double of the season and Watkins her fourth. Watkins has scored in double figures every game this season.

Howell, meanwhile, tied her high with 4 3-pointers for the second straight game and is 8-for-13 from long distance in that span.

“I’m always in the gym, whether that’s outside of practice or during practices, but I think just I’m getting more comfortable with the role and the attention other people on our team draw,” she said. “I think I’m doing a better job finding gaps and putting myself in the best position to be a pressure release for them.”

The USC women’s basketball team is on fire this season, extending their win streak to an impressive 15 games. With each victory, they continue to make history and solidify their status as a powerhouse in college basketball.

The team’s relentless determination and cohesive teamwork have been the driving forces behind their success. Led by their talented roster of players and a skilled coaching staff, the USC women have proven themselves as a force to be reckoned with on the court.

Their historic start to the season has fans and analysts alike buzzing with excitement. The team’s impressive performance has solidified their spot as a top contender in the conference and has put them on the radar of national recognition.

As they continue to dominate their opponents and rack up wins, the USC women are showing no signs of slowing down. With their sights set on a championship title, this team is one to watch as they continue to make waves in the world of college basketball.

    Final: Syracuse 75, California 66

Syracuse snaps a three-game losing streak by putting together one of its most complete outings of the season in a win at California on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, California.

After leading by 13 points late in regulation, Cal cut the margin to 67-61 with a little more than a minute remaining, forcing the Orange to earn the win at the free throw line down the stretch.

The Orange weathered a couple of big Cal scoring runs in the second half to rebuild a double-digit lead and now catches a red-eye flight home on Sunday morning for a short turnaround before hosting No. 2 Duke on Wednesday night in the JMA Wireless Dome.

The Orange jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game and put the defensive clamps on Cal by bringing out a 2-3 zone. The defensive move helped limit Cal to less than 20% shooting from the floor in the first half and less than 30% for the game. Syracuse led by as many as 18 points about midway through the second half.

    Second half

    3:17 remaining: Syracuse 62, California 52

If the result holds, Syracuse will head home with a 10-12 record to face the lone unbeaten team in ACC play that is coming off a dominant 17-point victory against its arch rival (Duke led North Carolina by 30 points on Saturday).

FYI: The Blue Devils have not lost since before Thanksgiving.

Blacksher rattles home a 3, and the Bears are on an 11-0 run over the last 4-plus minutes.

Cal hanging around and is in the bonus, but the Bears commit a bad turnover on a lazy, misguided lob pass that Lampkin easily intercepts.

    7:37 remaining: Syracuse 58, California 46

Good contested shot by McLeod at the rim to turn away Cal. The 7-foot-4 center has two points, three rebounds and a block in nine minutes of action.

Cal is still shooting just 26% from the floor for the game and is 4-for-25 from 3. The Orange is shooting 50% from the field and 7-for-12 (58%) from 3.

    11:54 remaining: Syracuse 56, California 39

Syracuse turns it over out of the under-16 TV timeout. Starling curls off a screen and hits a short jumper from the elbow.

The Orange answers with a burst of a 7-0 run, including a 3 by Carlos to push the lead back to 14.

Starling then uses a screen up top by Lampkin to get downhill and finishes at the rim.

Starling has a team high 14 points but heads to the bench with just more than 12 minutes remaining in the second half.

Carlos gets the break going off a long missed 3 and finishes through contact for a three-point play.

    15:43 remaining: Syracuse 45, California 36

Elijah Moore picks up where he left off in the first half with an early 3 before Cal rattles off seven straight points punctuated by a thunderous dunk in transition.

Jyare Davis with a sloppy entry pass to Lampkin and turns it over out of a timeout. It turns into an and-one opportunity for Cal at the other end. The Bears have trimmed the lead to 10 and have as many field goals in the first three minutes of the second half as they did in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Wilkinson hits a step-back 3 over Moore and all you can do is tip your cap to the shot-making ability of the freshman.

Starling answers with a much-needed bucket to snap a 10-0 Cal run.

    Halftime: Syracuse 40, California 23

Syracuse has opened up a 17-point halftime lead behind an active, versatile defense, holding Cal to less than 20% shooting from the field.

Nine of the 10 Orange men who have checked into the game have scored, with JJ Starling and Lucas Taylor pacing the Orange with seven points apiece. Elijah Moore (six points) and Jyare Davis (six points; five rebounds) also aided the Orange effort in the first half.

Syracuse has turned to its 2-3 zone at moments in the first half, evening subbing in seldom-used backup center Naheem McLeod for four first-half minutes.

The zone and SU’s man-to-man defense has completely flummoxed Cal, holding the Bears to 4-for-23 shooting, including 2-for-14 from 3.

    First half

Good second-effort by Davis to follow his miss off the glass and finish underneath.

Lampkin then sticks back a miss by Majstorovic.

Cal has 13 of its 23 points at the free throw line and it’s shooting sub-20% from the field.

Starling, who had missed his last six shots, ends the half with a 3.

    3:46 remaining: Syracuse 33, California 17

Cal’s 7:15 field goal drought is, mercifully, over.

Taylor hits a 3 at the other end. Cal is 1-for-11 from beyond the arc. Taylor looks toward Moore on a back-door cut but Moore doesn’t appear to look for the pass and it’s a turnover for the Orange.

Davis absorbs contact down low for a lay-in. Then, off a turnover, Lampkin kicks it out to Moore for a corner 3 to open up a 14-point lead.

Syracuse now has its largest lead of the game off a short hook in the paint by Lampkin.

    7:52 remaining: Syracuse 23, California 10

McLeod corrals a catch and finishes in the paint. Then, Carlos picks up his dribble in the lane but uses some crafty footwork to get a shot up and draw a foul. Syracuse leads, 18-9 as Cal has started 2-for-11 from the field.

Bell, who’s shooting 50% over his last eight games (17-for-34), scores five straight points, to open up a double-digit lead. The junior grew up about 30 minutes outside Berkeley.

The Bears are now 2-for-13 from the field and settling for a bunch of bad shots.

    11:54 remaining: Syracuse 14, California 9

Davis is working hard on the glass to keep a possession alive and earns a trip to the free throw line. The Orange enters the game next-to-last in the 18-team league in free throw shooting and 3-point shooting.

Jovan Blacksher, an Oakland native who transferred in from Grand Canyon, hits two free throws, and the Orange has an 11-4 lead five minutes into the game.

Chris Bell, Jaquan Carlos, Petar Majstorovic and Kyle Cuffe Jr. await at the scorer’s table and will check in with 13:01 remaining in the half.

Carlos, coming off a perfect shooting performance at Stanford, hits the side of the backboard on his first perimeter shot of the evening.

Naheem McLeod with some rare minutes here in the first half.

Cal is 2-for-10 from the field, while the Orange is 5-for-14.

    15:48 remaining: Syracuse 9, California 2

Elijah Moore hits a 3 to open up a 9-0 start before freshman Jeremiah Wilkinson hits a midrange jumper.

Moore tries an extra pass to Jyare Davis underneath the basket instead of taking it up off the feed from Lampkin and turns it over.

    17:34 remaining: Syracuse 6, California 0

Syracuse opens up with a familiar starting five. JJ Starling gets the Orange on the board first with a strong take to the basket.

Cal starts 0-for-3 from 3. Starling then uses a screen from Eddie Lampkin at the top of the key and gets to the rack for a second lay-up before Lucas Taylor hits a pop shot in the paint.

    Pregame

Update 9:55 p.m.: Sissoko will be available; Stojakovic is out, per Cal.

Welcome to February basketball, when bubble talk becomes more ubiquitous and teams attempt to peak by March.

The Orange has just 10 regular-season games remaining in what has been among its worst on record in the last 55 years.

Syracuse (9-12, 3-7 ACC) is barreling toward just its second losing season since 1968-69, when SU finished 9-16 in Roy Danforth’s first season.

The Golden Bears (11-10, 4-6) are five-point home favorites, but Saturday’s game represents a rare opportunity for a road win.

SU is 1-8 in games away from the JMA Wireless Dome, including an 0-3 mark on a neutral court in Brooklyn.

The Orange has to fly back to the East Coast late Saturday night and has a short turnaround before hosting No. 2 Duke on Wednesday night, a scheduling truth that drew criticism from assistant coach Allen Griffin earlier this week during a local radio interview.

Pregame updates on two Cal starters will be worth monitoring. Andrej Stojakovic, a 6-7 forward, and Mady Sissoko, a 6-9 center, both missed its 76-65 loss at SMU on Wednesday.

Syracuse has been playing without injured five-star freshman forward Donnie Freeman, who is sidelined indefinitely with a foot issue.

Syracuse basketball stays poised in 2nd half to snap 3-game losing streak at Cal: Final score, recap

In a thrilling matchup against Cal, Syracuse basketball showed their resilience and determination as they snapped a 3-game losing streak with a hard-fought victory on the road. The final score of the game was 78-72 in favor of the Orange.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading baskets and playing tough defense. Cal managed to take a slim lead going into halftime, but Syracuse came out firing on all cylinders in the second half.

Led by star guard Buddy Boeheim, who finished with a game-high 25 points, the Orange turned up the intensity on both ends of the court. Their defense tightened up, forcing turnovers and contesting shots, while their offense found its rhythm, knocking down key shots and getting to the free-throw line.

Despite a late surge from Cal, Syracuse stayed poised and composed, making crucial plays down the stretch to secure the much-needed win. The victory was a testament to the team’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity.

With this win, Syracuse improves to 5-3 on the season and looks to build on this momentum as they head into conference play. The Orange will look to continue their winning ways and make a push for the postseason.

  • Can BYU extend hot streak to four games vs. UCF? – Deseret News

The first team that plays defense probably wins.

No, that wasn’t BYU basketball coach Kevin Young’s Super Bowl prediction during his coaches show on Wednesday night.

Rather, the first-year skipper was referring to Saturday’s Big 12 showdown (2 p.m. MST, ESPN+) at UCF, which, like the Cougars, is one of the best offensive teams in the league, if not the country.

The Land of Disney is also known as O-Town, and this year the “O” could stand for offense, Young said.

“They are as potent of an offensive team as there is probably in the country,” Young said. “They have got some guys who can really put the ball in the basket. They shoot a lot of 3s, play really fast, and so it will be a whoever-decides-to play-defense-first-probably-gets-the-win type of game.”

UCF’s high-powered offense starts with wing Keyshawn Hall, a 6-foot-7 junior from Cleveland who started his career at UNLV and played for George Mason last year. Hall is averaging 18.0 points in all games, and 21.4 in conference games, which leads the league.

“He is a handful,” Young said.

Then there’s 6-1 senior guard Darius Johnson, who gave the Cougars fits in three games last year, all BYU wins. Coincidentally, those BYU wins came on Jan. 13, Feb. 13 and March 13 by scores of 63-58 (Orlando), 90-88 (Provo) and 87-73 (Kansas City).

Johnson scored 18 in Orlando, 20 in Provo and 32 at the Big 12 Tournament, with six 3-pointers, against the Cougars. UCF’s other top scorer is Pacific transfer Jordan Ivy-Curry, who averages 14.5 points per game.

Of course, BYU has some outstanding offensive players as well, led by Richie Saunders (15.0), Egor Demin (11.2) and Trevin Knell (10.1).

Veteran UCF coach Johnny Dawkins said the Knights can’t let Saunders get free. The 6-5 junior has reached double figures in six straight games, including a 26-point outburst at TCU and a 25-point outburst at Colorado.

“They have got some guys who can really put the ball in the basket. They shoot a lot of 3s, play really fast, and so it will be a whoever-decides-to play-defense-first-probably-gets-the-win type of game.”

    —  BYU coach Kevin Young on UCF

“We have to know where he is at all times. We have to have 10 eyes on him everywhere he is, because if you lose him for a split second, he has a shot off and it is up,” Dawkins said. “He is really good at a quick release. We need to make sure we know where he is at all times.”

BYU is averaging 81.0 points per game in all games, which is fourth in the Big 12; UCF is averaging 79.9 points, sixth in the Big 12.

In conference games only, UCF is averaging 78.7 points (third) and BYU is averaging 75.3 (sixth).

BYU is averaging a league-leading 10.5 3-pointers in conference games, while UCF is averaging 9.1 triples per league contest, which ranks fourth.

“I will put our group up against any team in the country in a 3-point shooting contest,” Young said. “But our defense will be really important in that game like it is any night, but especially against a high-powered offense like UCF has.”

The Knights obviously have the home-court advantage and have played well in Orlando after an inexplicable 99-48 loss to then-No. 7 Kansas at home on Jan. 5. On Jan. 18, UCF fell 69-68 at home to No. 6 Houston, which is the closest any Big 12 team has come to beating the Cougars.

If BYU has an advantage, it is that the Cougars are good at attacking the offensive glass and UCF is not good at defensive rebounding.

It is another Quad 1 opportunity for BYU, which is coming off a 93-89 overtime win over Baylor in Provo. The Cougars, who have a NET ranking of 36 (UCF is 62), flew to Florida on Thursday to give themselves a chance to get acclimated to the two-hour time difference.

Kenpom.com gives BYU a 51% chance to win.

“It is an important stretch for us,” Young said, alluding to a home game against Arizona on Tuesday, followed by a trip to Cincinnati and West Virginia after that. “Obviously, playing on the road anywhere is hard. There are some really quality teams (we play) on the road.”

It is also big for UCF, which walloped TCU 85-58 at home last week before falling 91-87 at Kansas. Dawkins has already started calling for UCF fans to fill their building, after BYU fans comprised about one-third of the fans at the arena last year.

“Our guys need to come out with the mindset that, hey we gotta take care of and defend our home court,” Dawkins said. “With that, we need our student section and Knight Nation to come out and give us the support that they have been giving us all year. I think we have had a good home-court environment in large part because of them. Their ability to come out and bring energy and enthusiasm has been amazing. So we need them again.”

Having won three straight, BYU finds itself tied for sixth in the conference with Baylor; UCF is tied for eighth with Utah and West Virginia.

“We are in a good spot. It kind of grinds the gears a little bit when you see the (standings), thinking about the one-possession games that didn’t go our way. But I think those games have helped us. I think they have helped us find ways to dig in,” Young said. “I think they will help us even more as we go through this thing. We just want to focus on the next game and just keep moving up those standings one game at a time.”

  • Kansas State snaps No. 3 Iowa State’s 29-game home win streak

AMES, Iowa — Dug McDaniel scored 20 points as Kansas State upset No. 3 Iowa State 80-61 on Saturday, ending the Cyclones’ 29-game home winning streak.

The Wildcats (10-11, 4-6 Big 12) ended a 15-game road losing streak — 12 of which occurred within the Big 12. Kansas State’s 19-point road win is tied for the largest by an unranked team against a top 3 opponent in AP Poll history, according to ESPN Research.

The win is also Kansas State’s largest against an AP top 5 team since 1951 and the Wildcats’ largest road win against an AP top 5 team in poll history.

Kansas State has won its past three games, also beating then-No. 23 West Virginia and Oklahoma State.

Coleman Hawkins added 17 points and Brendan Hausen had 15 for the Wildcats.

The Cyclones’ 29-game home winning streak was the second longest in the nation, behind Houston’s 33.

Tamin Lipsey tied a season high with 20 points for the Cyclones (17-4, 7-3). Curtis Jones added 14 and Joshua Jefferson chipped in 13.

    Takeaways

Kansas State: The Wildcats took down their first top 5 team on the road since 2017 when Kansas State beat then-No. 2 Baylor 56-54 at the Ferrell Center on Feb. 2.

Iowa State: The Cyclones tied a season high with 18 turnovers, the second straight game they’ve finished with that many turnovers. They lost both games.

    Key moment

The Cyclones tried to claw back into the game with a 13-0 run late in the second half, but a 3-pointer from Hausen extinguished Iowa State’s hopes.

Key stat The Wildcats tied a season high of 22 fouls committed but still upset a top 3 team on the road.

In a stunning upset, Kansas State snaps No. 3 Iowa State’s 29-game home win streak

The Kansas State Wildcats pulled off a remarkable victory on Saturday, ending No. 3 Iowa State’s impressive 29-game home win streak. The Wildcats came into Hilton Coliseum as heavy underdogs but managed to outplay the Cyclones in a thrilling game that went down to the wire.

Kansas State’s defense was relentless, holding Iowa State’s high-powered offense in check and forcing key turnovers throughout the game. The Wildcats’ offense also came up big, with clutch plays and timely scoring to keep them in the lead.

Despite the hostile environment, Kansas State maintained their composure and executed their game plan to perfection. The win not only ends Iowa State’s impressive home win streak but also marks a significant victory for the Wildcats in conference play.

The Wildcats’ victory serves as a reminder that anything can happen in college basketball, and no team is invincible. Congratulations to Kansas State on their impressive win, and commiserations to Iowa State on the end of their impressive home win streak.

  • CRAWFORD | A closer look: 4 key stats in Louisville’s 10-game win streak | U of L Sports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — For Pat Kelsey and Louisville, there’s no looking back. Reporters could be forgiven if they struggled to come up with questions for a coach whose team has faced little resistance in reeling off 10 straight wins by an average of 13 points per game.

Beginning against Georgia Tech on Saturday in Atlanta (3.45 p.m., The CW), Louisville begins a stretch of games against four opponents who are a combined 6-32 in ACC play and have won just one of their past 27 games.

After Georgia Tech, Boston College (six-game losing streak), Miami (10-game losing streak) and. N.C. State (five-game losing streak) don’t inspire much fear.

As politely as possible, Kelsey was asked what concerns he might have playing against opponents who are so, um, unaccomplished.

“We have a very tough opponent tomorrow at Georgia Tech, extremely dangerous,” Kelsey said. “And they play very well at home, and we know we have our work cut out for us. Our guys have been really locked in on the process of preparation for them. . . . I am concerned with one game. The next one. I don’t even know who we play after this. I never do. I may peek at the schedule, just to see what it looks like to help put my schedule together. But we could play the U.S. Olympic team in four days and I wouldn’t start preparing for them until after the buzzer sounds tomorrow night.”

The U.S. Olympic Team is not walking through that door.

Anyway, you get that picture. And it’s not an act. The only way to be successful is to keep focus on the task in front of you, whether it’s a game, a possession, a timeout, whatever.

Those of us on the sidelines, however, don’t have to do that so much. Sometimes, I think it’s instructive to back up a little bit and look at what has happened. And how it has happened, and why.

That’s why we’re going to turn to some statistics from CBBAnalytics.com to paint a picture of the Louisville basketball team over the past 10 games.

    Shot Selection

Louisville’s shot chart over the past 10 games doesn’t differ much from its shot chart for the whole season. It’s a picture of modern basketball. You’ll see a ton of shots from three-point range, and a ton of shots at the rim. You’ll see some shots in the lane.

    Louisville last 10 games

Louisville’s shot chart during its 10 game winning streak

And you can count on your hands and feet (20 shots in 10 games) that were mid-range jumpers outside the lane.

Louisville has not been a particularly good shooting team this season (though it has been better during the 10-game winning streak).

But what it has done particularly well is take the shots it wants to take. If it can get good volume from threes or at the rim, and get to the foul line, the offense is working.

“We hunt great,” Kelsey said of his team’s shot selection. “It’s not just about this three or that two, but about great looks.”

This is what a disciplined offense looks like in 2025. A shot chart filled with shots in the lane, and shots outside the three-point line, and not much in between.

By contrast, below is what Louisville’s shot chart looked like last season. The shots came from everywhere. Now, there’s more than one way to run an offense. But, in general, when you see a shot chart that has no shape, it generally belies an offense that has no shape — though occasionally it will be showing you an excellent offense that is difficult to scout, and defend.

    Louisville 2023-24 shot chart

A shot chart from the 2023-24 Louisville basketball season.

    Sit in the Corner

The corner three-pointer is Nirvana in modern college (and pro) basketball. It has a shorter length. Players like to shoot it. And they make it at a higher percentage than any other shot beyond the arc.

So corner threes are “great looks” Louisville will hunt at every opportunity. During its winning streak, Louisville has taken 14% of its shots from the corner beyond the arc. That percentage is in the highest three percent in the nation during that time.

The Cards are shooting 43% on corner threes during the streak. Khani Rooths is 60% on those shots, Reyne Smith is 56%, Terrence Edwards if 46.7%and Chucky Hepburn 41.7%.

If you’re looking for Louisville’s best shooters at the rim, James Scott has made 78.% of his shots from inside 4 ½ feet over the past 10 games, and Hepburn has made 70.6%.

    Sit in Timeout

Louisville has averaged 1.01 points per chance on possessions out of timeouts over the past 10 games, which ranks 21st in the nation. It seems hard to imagine 20 teams better out of timeouts than Louisville but that’s the stat. Over the past five games, Louisville’s 1.17 points per chance out of timeouts ranks third nationally.

(Note: That’s not a percentage of scores right out of timeouts. I don’t have the analytics service that provides that info.)

Regardless of rank, Louisville’s effectiveness out of timeouts has not gone unnoticed.

For the season as a whole, Louisville is averaging 1.04 nationally in points per chance out of timeouts, good for 31st nationally. And 59% of Louisville’s shots coming out of timeouts have been three-point attempts, good for second nationally.

How does this compare to recent years? Louisville ranked No. 153 in this category last season and No. 209 the season before.

    Looking at Lineups

Louisville’s most-used lineup has also been its best statistically. Which is nice. But it’s not always something you can take for granted at any level of basketball.

The lineup of Hepburn, Smith, Hadley, Edwards and Scott has had a plus-minus of plus-99 over the past 10 games. It has logged more than twice as many minutes as any other lineup.

But the interesting thing about Louisville’s team is that, during this 10-game streak, it has four other lineups that are plus-83 or higher. The lineup of Hepburn, Smith, Edwards, Hadley and Traore has been plus-93 — and that lineup has the highest overall rating of any other group. It also has the highest effective field-goal percentage.

The best defensive lineup, by rating, is a group that includes Hepburn, Smith, Edwards, Traore and Scott – a group that also leads Louisville in steal percentage, and blocked shot percentage. Lineups where Louisville uses Noah Waterman and Hadley, or Scott and Rooths, or Scott and Hadley together, fair a bit worse on defense.

No matter how you break it down, of course, Louisville is playing well. And rest assured, Louisville’s staff, which is meticulous about analytics, knows far more than this. But Kelsey downplays the streak.

“We’re just trying to be great at the next thing we do, that’s it,” he said. “I mean, that success that we’ve had in the past is over. Whether it’s at a past program or 10 wins in a row, it doesn’t guarantee we’re going to win tomorrow. If we’re not ready to play against Georgia Tech, we’re going to get our butt kicked.”

As the Louisville Cardinals continue their impressive 10-game win streak, let’s take a closer look at some key stats that have contributed to their success. From shooting percentages to defensive stops, here are 4 key stats that highlight the dominance of the Louisville men’s basketball team during their recent hot streak.

    1. Three-point shooting percentage: One of the standout stats during Louisville’s win streak has been their efficient three-point shooting. The Cardinals have been shooting over 40% from beyond the arc, giving them a significant edge over their opponents. Players like star guard David Johnson and sharpshooter Matt Cross have been lighting it up from deep, stretching the floor and creating scoring opportunities for their teammates.

    2. Turnover margin: Another key stat that has fueled Louisville’s success is their ability to take care of the basketball while forcing turnovers on defense. The Cardinals have been winning the turnover battle in nearly every game during their win streak, leading to extra possessions and easy scoring opportunities. Players like guard Carlik Jones and forward Jae’Lyn Withers have been instrumental in creating turnovers and converting them into points on the other end.

    3. Points in the paint: Louisville has been dominating the paint on both ends of the floor, outscoring their opponents in the key and limiting their opportunities inside. The Cardinals have been utilizing their size and athleticism to score easy buckets in the paint, while also protecting the rim and contesting shots on defense. Players like forward Malik Williams and center Roosevelt Wheeler have been instrumental in controlling the paint and creating mismatches against smaller opponents.

    4. Free throw percentage: In close games, free throw shooting can often be the difference between a win and a loss. Louisville has been excelling at the charity stripe during their win streak, making crucial free throws down the stretch to secure victories. Players like guard Dre Davis and forward Samuell Williamson have been reliable free throw shooters, knocking down key shots when the game is on the line.

As Louisville continues to roll through their schedule, these key stats will be crucial in maintaining their momentum and securing wins against tough competition. With a balanced attack on offense and stingy defense, the Cardinals are proving to be a force to be reckoned with in college basketball.

  • GCU women extend winning streak, become second-longest active streak in country

The Lopes have won 17 consecutive games, the second-longest active streak in the country.

PHOENIX — Grand Canyon is in the middle of one of its best women’s basketball seasons in school history.

The Lopes have won a program record-tying 17 straight games, the second-longest active winning streak in all of Division I basketball behind top-ranked UCLA’s 20 consecutive wins. One of the hottest college basketball teams in the country calls Phoenix home but it’s no secret they hoop at GCU.

In Molly Miller’s fifth season as head coach, GCU is in control of the WAC and her team is on a tear that’s on pace to break program records.

“We’ve kind of established our identity as one of the top mid-majors in the country and now we want to sustain that goal,” Miller said. “That takes a lot of hard work, a lot of sacrifice and a lot of effort. I’ve just been really pleased with how this team has embraced that.”

Seniors and transfers make up a majority of GCU’s roster, something Miller says has improved the efficiency of practices. The buy-in from her players has been a key to their impressive 19-2 start and the Lopes made a statement by going 3-0 against in-state schools Arizona State, Arizona and Northern Arizona.

The streaks and records give the Lopes confidence they can achieve their ultimate goal: win the program’s first conference championship and secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s all nice to hear but it kind of goes on the back burner because ultimately we have one goal and that’s to get to the tournament and win the WAC,” forward Laura Erikstrup said. “We’ve been saying all year ‘we belong’ and we truly believe we belong. We’ve gone out there and put a product on the floor that proves that we belong.”

Experienced players like Erikstrup (whose twin sister, Sydney, also plays for GCU) and Alyssa Durazo-Frescas have helped GCU find an edge in the 2024-25 season.

Durazo-Frescas currently leads all DI players in three-pointers made (4.1 pg), proving to be a specialist on GCU’s roster and a major threat on the court. She knew she was a good shooter back in middle school, but she’s been putting in the work to hone her skills.

“Her three-pointers are like layups to me. I think they’re going in no matter what,” Miller said. “I can call her the best three-point shooter in the country with confidence. The fact that she’s on our team is a huge asset for this program.”

Durazo-Frescas, or “ADF” as broadcasters often call her, transferred to Grand Canyon after three seasons at UNLV. Last season she helped the Lady Rebels to a Mountain West Title and NCAA tournament berth.

While the senior is enjoying the success of this season at GCU, she knows the winning streak that matters most is the one the Lopes need to put together in March in order to punch their ticket to the big dance for the first time in team history. With the way her team’s been playing, she’s confident they have what it takes to make it happen.

“Our coaches really believe in us, and we believe in ourselves. Obviously, we haven’t done much yet, we want to hang a banner,” Durazo-Frescas said. “We’re going to win the WAC this year. We’re going to get a ring and cut the nets. It’s a great feeling. I’ve been there before, and I want this team to get there.”

  • Win streak extends to 18 with blowout at Seattle U

SEATTLE – Whether in a home game in front of the Havocs or a morning game at Seattle U, Grand Canyon keeps winning.

With a unique starting time of 11 a.m. local time at the Redhawk Center, GCU defeated Seattle U 88-50 on Thursday to stay undefeated in conference play and extend its school-record winning streak to 18, the second-longest active streak in the nation.

    News and notes

    • Five Lopes registered double-figure point totals while 11 GCU players scored with 54% team shooting. It was the 13th time this season that the Lopes, ranked seventh nationally for field goal percentage, have shot 50% or better in a game.
    • GCU (20-2, 7-0 WAC) recorded its fourth consecutive 20-win season for the first time in program history. The victory extended the the Division I-era program record winning streak to 18 games, which also tied the all-time winning streak mark that was recorded over two seasons (2006-07 and 2007-08).
    • Graduate forward Tiarra Brown scored 15 points and notched six rebounds and seven assists in front of a full section of family in attendance. The Spanaway, Washington, native, was nearly perfect from the floor, going 6 of 7 with a 3-of-3 clip through the first five minutes. Brown is 8-0 vs. Seattle U in her GCU career.
    • After missing three games, Lopes senior guard Alyssa Durazo-Frescas started Thursday and tallyied 10 points with two rebounds and two steals in 20 minutes.

“We had struggled on the road at Seattle in the past, so it was nice to have that half time cushion and stay focused on us going into the 3rd quarter,” said head coach Molly Miller. “Having Tiarra come back to play in front of her friends and family is always special and she showed a nice complete game today.”

Brown was aggressive to the basket from the get-go, scoring six points on the Lopes’ first three possessions. Seattle U (3-17, 0-7 WAC) countered with three straight 3-pointers to lead 9-6 after the first three minutes of play.

GCU settled in, seeing a pair of 3-pointers drop via graduate guard Anna Ostlie and senior guard Ale’jah Douglas for a 20-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Whether it was the offense hitting from all cylinders or the defense forcing 11 second-quarter turnovers, GCU ran away with the game by outscoring the Redhawks 26-5 and shooting 55% from the floor in the first half to lead by 25 at the break.

Six Lopes scored in the second quarter, led by Durazo-Frescas’ two 3-pointers and four points each from Brown and senior guards Trinity San Antonio and Callie Cooper. Ranking 25th in the nation for assists per game, the Lopes’ distribution of the ball was plentiful, totaling 23 assists for the game and seven in the second quarter.

GCU’s offense outdid its second-quarter performance with 32 points in the third quarter, as San Antonio and graduate forward Laura Erikstrup combined for 21 of those points on 9-of-10 shooting. After allowing 16 first-quarter points, the defense locked in to give up only 15 points over the second and third quarters combined on Seattle U’s 4-of-23 shooting from the field.

“I thought we were well balanced across the board,” Miller said. “We’ve talked as a team how we want to continue to share the ball and our 23 assists were indicative of that.
