  • Mardi Gras 2025 Tribute Store opens at Universal Studios Florida – Inside Universal

The Mardi Gras Tribute Store has officially opened at Universal Studios Florida as Universal Orlando gears up for 2025’s Universal’s Mardi Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval.

The highly themed store takes guests to the Legends of the Bayou, a museum inspired by New Orleans’s legends and other popular creatures of cryptozoology.

Guests will travel through the Museum’s curiosity shop, the Louisiana marsh, and a swamp shack.

Celebrating 30 Years of Mardi Gras, this year’s merchandise includes t-shirts, flannels, hats, and hoodies, as well as accessories like headwear, backpacks, and vinyl toys. New must-haves include the eye-catching Gator Junior Shoulder Pal Plush and exclusive 30th-anniversary collectibles, including a customizable commemorative beaded necklace, a light-up Gator Junior popcorn bucket, a limited-edition bubble pin, and festive chocolate coins.

The Tribute Store’s first room brings us through the Curiosity Shop, where Cyrus T Pavo welcomes us. The room is filled with references to cryptozoological creatures and dials up the tackiness to 11. As you walk through the room, you’ll find displays, models, artifacts, and other random findings of the “legends of the bayou.”

The 2nd room brings us through the Louisiana swamps, where the Mossman lurks in the marshes. Finally, we make our way to Baron TonTon’s shack before entering the final room, where a giant wooden gator statue looms over the merchandise.

Keep a close eye on Easter Eggs throughout the store, as there are PLENTY to find, including a hidden ET, a nod to Monster’s Cafe, Jaws references, and about 80 “little” Bigfoot figures hiding around the store.

There are over 80 of these little figures around the store.
The Grunch Road Monster, aka The Grunch, can be found in each room.

From February 1 through March 30, guests will let the good times roll as they experience an authentic, family-friendly version of the Mardi Gras bash at Universal Studios Florida. The event will be held over 60+ nights – with the food booths open and the parade taking place every night.

  • Touching Tractor Tribute: Farmers Bid Farewell to Steve Hamm, a Loyal Lifeline in the Field

A love for tractors and an admiration for John Deere green. That’s how you’d describe Steve Hamm, a John Deere mobile technician for 30 years. A father and grandpa, he was loved by many, as many in the community will tell you he was truly dedicated to his craft.

“Steve was a pioneer for that kind of knowledge. We really depended on him,” says Chris Roberson, general manager of Ag-Power, the John Deere dealership in Richmond, Mo., where Steve worked.

“He was a man of integrity,” says Dennis Estes, who worked with Steve at Ag-Power, but was also Steve’s friend and the pastor at his church. “He had a passion for what he did, and he was a person who served a lot of people.”

As a technician, Steve’s career revolved around service, but even then, Steve went above and beyond time and again.

“He lived to serve,” Roberson says. “He put everyone else above him or before him, and he was on call all the time. Whether it involved work or even personal family matters. He was always able to be reached and counted on.”

“You look at the communities that Steve served, people from small towns and everywhere else who called Steve, if it was 10 at night, Steve took the call,” says Estes.

Estes says for area farmers, Steve was a loyal lifeline in the field, providing a service no matter the time and no matter how challenging the issue was that needed fixed.

“This equipment is so complicated these days. And Steve pursued the passion of always learning,” says Estes. “If there was anything he couldn’t fix, he found out how to fix it, and he wouldn’t quit. He had the passion that made him pursue that until he got it. And I think that’s what really sets him apart.”

Roberson says on paper, Steve was a master technician, which is the highest honor you can receive as a John Deere technician. But he was more than that. Steve had a wealth of knowledge he passed on to others.

A man who dedicated three decades of his life to helping others was remembered in a remarkable way this past week. On a crisp, sunny Tuesday morning, those same farmers who Steve served for all those years found a way to show just how grateful they were.

“I’ve never seen a tribute for somebody that was more compelling probably than that tribute,” Estes says.

Tractor after tractor, combines with their augers out, all lined the road next to the cemetery where Steve would be laid to rest.

“I couldn’t help but think as we were doing the graveside service the effort made by so many people to be there,” Estes says. “As I looked up on the hill at all of the farmers, it was almost as if it was a mist because you could see the moisture in the eyes of so many of these people, many hardened individuals. Farmers who are used to being out in nature and fighting it, whether flood or drought or whatever it is, and through that toughness, they still had those kind of feelings for Steve.”

Farmers who never had the chance to say thank you or goodbye, stepped up to the call this week with a touching tractor tribute.

“He deserved every bit of that tribute. He didn’t ever ask for it. I hope he’s smiling down on us,” Estes says.

The touching tractor tribute was a nod to something Steve loved so much, as he took his final ride.

Today, the farming community is mourning the loss of a beloved member, Steve Hamm, who was not just a farmer, but a loyal lifeline in the field. As a tribute to his memory, fellow farmers came together to bid farewell to Steve in a touching tractor procession.

Steve Hamm was known for his dedication to his farm and his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was always ready to share his knowledge and expertise with others, making him a respected figure in the farming community.

In honor of Steve, farmers from all around gathered with their tractors to form a procession that traveled through the fields that Steve once worked. The sight of the tractors lined up in a row, each one bearing a sign or banner in tribute to Steve, was a powerful reminder of the impact he had on those around him.

As the procession made its way through the fields, the sound of the tractors filled the air, a fitting farewell to a man who had spent so much of his life working the land. The tribute was a touching reminder of the bonds that unite farmers and the deep sense of community that exists among those who work the land.

Steve Hamm may no longer be with us, but his legacy lives on in the fields he tended and the hearts of those who knew him. The touching tractor tribute was a fitting send-off for a man who will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace, Steve Hamm.

  • A smoky, whisky-flavoured tribute to one of greats of American music

    Glasgow Royal Concert Hall

    Three stars

In 1970 David Crosby, burned by the implosion of supergroup Crosby Stills Nash & Young that summer and still grieving the death of his 21-year-old girlfriend Christine Hinton in a car crash in 1969, retreated to his boat in Sausalito, California, took lots of drugs, drank a lot of alcohol and somehow made a record.

Working at night with a cadre of crack West Coast musicians including The Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia, Joni Mitchell and his erstwhile bandmates Graham Nash and Neil Young among others, Crosby recorded his debut solo album If I Could Only Remember My Name. “I was an immature person, stoned out of my mind, hit with something I absolutely couldn’t handle,” Crosby told Rolling Stone years later. “It’s amazing I managed to get into the studio at all.”

In the circumstances the slightly unfocused sense of drift that floats through the album makes sense. But it didn’t help its reception when it emerged in February 1971.

But over the last 50 years the album’s reputation has grown, so much so that when it came to mounting a tribute to the music of Crosby, who died in 2023, the composer and producer Kate St John decided a recreation of If I Could Only Remember My Name would provide the perfect vehicle.

Originally commissioned for the Llais Festival and performed at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff last October, it made its way north to Glasgow for Celtic Connections.

The Staves performed at the concertThe Staves performed at the concert

St John was joined on stage by an impressive line-up of musicians and singers, including guitarist Robbie McIntosh, drummer Evan Jenkins, percussionist Ernesto Marichales, Kris Drever, Liam O’Maonlai, (formerly of Hothouse Flowers) and The Staves. (BC Camplight was posted missing with Covid.)

What followed was an evening of impeccable musicianship, glorious harmonies and enough evidence of Crosby’s songwriting capabilities to challenge those of us who have retained our residual, kneejerk post-punk, “never trust a hippy” prejudices.

And yet … and yet this felt a little like a missed opportunity. The issue was more presentational than musical. From the moment everyone trooped onstage and launched into the album’s opening track Music Is Love, led by The Staves, it was clear that this was going to be a sonically high-end evening. If anything, there was a pristine precision on display that was rather more in focus than the smeary beauty of the original. That may have had something to do with the fact, St John told us later, that Crosby had paid all his musicians with a bag of weed.

But as the first half of the show recreating If I Could Only Remember My Name proceeded without any introductions or context, the evening gathered a possibly unplanned solemnity. O’Maonlai brought a loose-jointed majesty to Traction in the Rain, the album’s prettiest song, and Ed Harcourt performed Cowboy Movie – Crosby’s self-mythologising retelling of the CSNY story – with a fierce intensity. But it all felt a little, well, churchy.

This became all the more apparent in the second half – devoted to highlights of the Crosby songbook – when everyone loosened up, started talking and began to give the impression of thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Margo Buchanan brought a bluesy swagger to Long Time Gone, Harcourt returned to offer up an even fiercer take on CSNY’s Almost Cut My Hair and The Staves reminded us of Crosby’s pop sensibility with their harmonies on The Byrds’ classic Why.

    Kris DreverKris Drever

And when Michelle Willis, now resident in Scotland but who worked with “Cros” in his final years, came on and started talking about the man she knew you suddenly got a glimpse of another possible way to tell Crosby’s story, one that foregrounded his humanity (though it has to be said no one on the evening was up for talking about what a monumental pain in the ass the man could be, as he would often admit himself).

The highlight of the evening was a duet between Willis and Kris Drever on Things We Do For Love that was a smoky, whisky-flavoured delight.

By the end the affection everyone on stage had for Crosby’s work was very apparent. It was just that it was much more fun when they came out and admitted it.

  • Elvis Costello’s Liverpool gig ‘was a mess’ as he issued emotional tribute after sad loss

The legendary musician has forged an unbreakable bond with Merseyside

Elvis Costello is is one of Merseyside's finest exports and has enjoyed an incredible career in music since the late 1970s
Elvis Costello is is one of Merseyside’s finest exports and has enjoyed an incredible career in music since the late 1970s(Image: PA)

Elvis Costello is one of Merseyside’s greatest ever exports. The 70-year-old, whose real name is Declan Patrick MacManus, shot to stardom in 1977 with his first album, My Aim Is True, and has been writing hits ever since.

The musician may have been born in London, but his parents are both from Merseyside and he is synonymous with the region. The Watching the Detectives hitmaker’s strong bond with Liverpool is symbolised on 81 Renshaw record shop where his iconic image is emblazoned on the front of a building on one of the city centre’s busiest streets.

The singer has previously spoken about his unbreakable bond with the city as he explained how his character and his personality was forged by his Merseyside upbringing. Speaking to Your Magazine Liverpool ahead of a gig at the Royal Philharmonic Hall last year, he said: “I tell people I was born in London and borne north on a donkey to be christened in the church of The Holy Cross in Birkenhead.

“The suburbs west of London are not a place to which I can really feel any sense of belonging. Merseyside is definitely my place of family origin; my ma was from the Liverpool 8 end of Smithdown Road and my dad’s first family home – later remodelled by the Luftwaffe – was 50 yards from the docks on Cathcart Street, Birkenhead.”

Elvis lived in West Derby with his mum, Lilian, from 1970 until he moved back down South to try and launch his music career. He enjoyed a close bond with his Scouse mum and was devastated when she died in February 2021.

He issued a heartfelt tribute on Facebook and ended it by paying thanks for everything she gave him. He said: “There is not enough to show my gratitude for all she gave to me, teaching me or handing on to me so many things, from an appreciation of Frank Sinatra, before I could properly construct sentences to a relentless Protestant work ethic that has driven my otherwise incense-infused Catholic irrationality.

“The passing of an older person should be more the occasion for celebrating their long life, good fortune and strong spirit but when it’s your Mam, it is impossible to keep the tears at bay forever. So, I’ll just say as she always did to me as a child, “Nos Da, Lillian. Sleep tight. Your Loving Son. Declan”

In the interview with Your Magazine Liverpool, Elvis admitted the passing of his mum impacted a performance in Liverpool on his 2021 tour. He said: “Truthfully, my last appearance in Liverpool was a mess. I think it was too soon after my mother’s passing and just wanted too much from the show. I lost my bearings and my judgement. Rather than it being some kind of joyful wake, it was the worst show I’ve played in the city since that dodgy folk club spot in 1971.”

Elvis is a seasoned performer and regularly returns to the city that he loves to entertain fans with his incredible back catalogue of hits. He is currently on tour with long time collaborator Steve Nieve and has dates in America planned until summer 2025. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee turned 70 last year and had surgery for prostate cancer in 2018, but he remains as busy as ever.

He is showing no signs of slowing down and harbours no plans of retiring as he will surely return to his Liverpool home soon on any potential tour in the future. He told the Sunday Times last year: “Let’s put it this way. I have a lot of music, and a lot of things are coming.

“I do have to [tour]! I do! Not for philosophical reasons, but because it’s my job. I need to make a living. I don’t have any great fortunes. I spent all my money on making other music, or years ago I made some bad investment choices -‘why don’t you invest in trees, or become a bicycle mogul?’ — you get talked into doing things. No, I did a summer tour and that was a commercial endeavour.”

Elvis Costello’s Liverpool gig ‘was a mess’ as he issued emotional tribute after sad loss

Elvis Costello’s recent gig in Liverpool was reportedly a chaotic and disorganized affair, with fans complaining of long wait times, technical difficulties, and a general lack of organization. Many concert-goers took to social media to express their frustration and disappointment with the event, which was supposed to be a celebration of Costello’s music and career.

Adding to the somber mood of the evening, Costello also used the gig as an opportunity to pay tribute to a close friend and collaborator who had recently passed away. The emotional tribute, combined with the lackluster performance and logistical issues, left many fans feeling underwhelmed and dissatisfied.

Despite the rocky start, Costello’s loyal fanbase has expressed their support and understanding, praising the singer for his heartfelt tribute and dedication to his craft. Hopefully, future gigs will be better organized and more enjoyable for all involved.

  • Augusta community gathers to pay tribute to Ruby Bridges

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – On Saturday, people, young and old, gathered at the Lucy C. Laney Memorial Stadium to pay tribute to Ruby Bridges’ 66-year legacy and her family’s fight to end segregation.

Each step was a walk in the past.

This is equal to the five blocks Ruby took during the Civil Rights Movement from her home to the first “all-white” elementary school that opened its doors to African Americans in the South.

Day of service event in Aiken

As the Augusta Junior Players gear up for their performance of, “Ruby”, one cast member says the walk was her way of saying, thank you for Ruby’s push for inclusion and diversity.

“I think we are all here today, to pay a tribute, a thank you. Like, ‘I know what you went through. We know what you had to do to accomplish to get where you are today.’ It’s just a big thank you to Ruby Bridges, honestly,” said Taylor Davis.

“Ruby: The Story of Ruby Bridges” will be performed on February 7 and 8 at the Kroc Center on Broad Street in downtown Augusta.

You can head to the Augusta Players Facebook page for more information.

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Augusta community came together to honor civil rights icon Ruby Bridges in a moving tribute. Hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds gathered at the local park to pay homage to Bridges, who made history as the first African American student to integrate an all-white school in the South.

The event began with speeches from local leaders and activists, highlighting Bridges’ bravery and dedication to the fight for equality. Participants then joined in a peaceful march through the streets of Augusta, holding signs and chanting slogans in support of racial justice.

As the sun began to set, a candlelight vigil was held in Bridges’ honor, with participants sharing stories of how her courage had inspired them to stand up against injustice in their own lives. The evening concluded with a powerful rendition of “We Shall Overcome,” a song that has become synonymous with the civil rights movement.

Overall, the tribute to Ruby Bridges was a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for what is right and fighting against discrimination and prejudice. The Augusta community showed their solidarity and support for Bridges’ legacy, vowing to continue her work for a more inclusive and just society.
