SEATTLE — Husky women’s basketball legend Kelsey Plum will have her #10 jersey retired during a ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 18.
“I’m forever proud to be a Husky and UW is a special place that fundamentally shaped me both as a basketball player and as a person,” Plum said. “It means the world to me to receive this honor and to celebrate it with my family, friends and alumni. It will be a great feeling to look up at the rafters and see my jersey alongside those that I’ve admired for so long.”
Plum is the first woman in UW history to have a jersey retired and the sixth Husky to hang from the rafters, according to UW.
This achievement comes as a shocker to none given the accolades Plum has under her belt. She managed to break numerous records during her time at UW from 2013-17.
Plum became the all-time NCAA scoring leader (3,527 points which stood until 2024), broke the 33-year-old NCAA career free throw record (912), and broke the single-season NCAA scoring record with 1,109 points in 2016-17 (which stood until the end of 2023-24 season). Plum also became UW’s all-time three-point leader, the Pac-12’s all-time single-season scoring leader, and set the Pac-12 single-game scoring record (57).
“Kelsey is one of the great basketball players of all time, and she’s a UW legend,” said Washington Director of Athletics Pat Chun.
After her time at UW, Plum went on to become a WNBA Champion and an Olympic gold medalist.
“An Olympic gold medalist and WNBA champion, Kelsey has inspired fans worldwide and countless young basketball players and student-athletes. We’re so fortunate to have Kelsey in the Husky family and honored to celebrate her as one of the greatest to wear the Purple and Gold,” said Chun.
The jersey retirement ceremony will take place inside Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion during the Huskies game against the Purdue Boilermakers.
The University of Washington women’s basketball program made history once again as they retired the jersey of one of their most legendary players, Kelsey Plum. Plum, who played for the Huskies from 2013 to 2017, was honored for her incredible record-breaking achievements during her time at UW.
Plum, a guard from Poway, California, made an immediate impact on the program as a freshman, breaking the school’s freshman scoring record and earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors. She continued to dominate on the court throughout her career, becoming the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer with 3,527 points.
In addition to her scoring prowess, Plum was also a standout playmaker, setting the NCAA record for most consecutive free throws made with 66. She was a three-time All-American, three-time Pac-12 Player of the Year, and a finalist for the prestigious Naismith Player of the Year award.
During the jersey retirement ceremony, Plum was surrounded by her former teammates, coaches, and fans who came out to show their support and appreciation for her contributions to the program. Plum expressed her gratitude for the honor, saying, “I am truly humbled and honored to have my jersey retired by the University of Washington. This program and this university will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Plum’s jersey now hangs in the rafters of Alaska Airlines Arena, alongside other Husky legends, as a reminder of her incredible accomplishments and lasting impact on the program. Her legacy as one of the greatest players in UW history will surely be remembered for years to come.
