Andrew Rannells reacts to his ’90s ‘Grease’ parody ad with Amy Adams

Today‘s Jenna Bush Hager and guest cohost Keke Palmer turned up the grease lightning when they surprised Andrew Rannells on the latest episode of the show.

The actor was in the studio to chat about his Broadway production All In: Comedy About Love when he was treated to an unexpected ’90s throwback clip of him and Amy Adams in a TV commercial parodying the hit musical Grease.

“But do you recognize the girl in the middle? Amy Adams!” said Rannells after the hosts ran the ad, which was for a bank in Omaha.

“Have you ever reconnected around that beautiful commercial you put together?” asked Hager.

Replied Rannells, “I kind of thought, at one point, I would run into Amy Adams somewhere, but —”

“Well let’s bring her out!” Palmer shouted. But sadly that was a joke.

Rannells then dove into an amusing anecdote about an encounter with his former commercial costar at a Golden Globes ceremony. “The one time I was asked to the Golden Globes, she was there. And you know it’s, like, the Hunger Games of celebrities,” recalled Rannells. “It’s like, everyone is there. I maybe walked towards her with a little too much enthusiasm, and her husband sort of got up and, like, blocked my path.”

He continued, “And I was like, ‘Amy, it’s me! Andy Rannells! We did a commercial together in Omaha in 1996!’ I just started shouting at her.”

The two were able to connect. “She was very nice,” said Rannells. “And then, weirdly, I saw her many times after that. She was always very sweet. And you know what? I’m going to say it: I knew when I met her she was something special.”

Both stars have come a long way since that humble little bank commercial. Adams, a six-time Academy Award nominee, is once again courting Oscar buzz for her work in Marielle Heller’s Nightbitch, while Rannells, a two-time Tony Award nominee and Grammy winner who has also had roles in movies and TV shows like Girls, recently boarded the star-studded All In.
