As a Texas rancher, I have seen my fair share of wildfires sweep through our land. Some fires bring destruction and devastation, leaving a trail of charred earth and lost livestock in their wake. These fires are what I like to call “bad smoke.” They are a force of nature that can’t be controlled, leaving us feeling helpless in their path.

But then there are the fires that bring renewal and growth, the fires that clear out the old and make way for the new. These fires are what I like to call “good smoke.” They rejuvenate the land, creating fertile ground for new grass to grow and providing fresh grazing opportunities for our cattle.

In the American West, wildfires are a part of life. They can be both friend and foe, depending on their nature and intensity. As ranchers, we must learn to adapt and work with the land, understanding that fire is a natural part of the ecosystem.

While the sight of smoke on the horizon may bring fear and uncertainty, I have come to appreciate the role that wildfires play in shaping our landscape. They remind us of the power of nature and the resilience of the land. And as long as we continue to respect and steward our land, we can find a balance between the bad smoke and the good smoke that shapes our lives as Texas ranchers.
