Daniil Medvedev pinpoints one area of his game he’s been working to improve in training since shock Australian Open defeat
Daniil Medvedev will be eager to put all of his focus on the Rotterdam Open, but part of him may still be thinking about his disastrous Australian Open.
Medvedev is among the biggest Australian Open losers, having fallen in the second round to American youngster Learner Tien.
And in his first round meeting with Kasidit Samrej, Medvedev was booed by the Australian Open crowd, summarising his disappointing experience in Melbourne.
Medvedev was the fifth seed at the Australian Open, where he is a three-time finalist, having lost last year’s final to Jannik Sinner.
He now moves on from that early exit by taking on Stan Wawrinka at the Rotterdam Open, where Sinner is taking a rest from his recent Grand Slam success.

Medvedev is the second seed in Rotterdam, with the Russian sharing what he has been working on ahead of the event with the ATP Tour website.
“It was a tough result in Australia,” he said. “In a way, it was a good match, but a tough result. I am just trying to look forward and bounce back, that is the only way. I have to try to gain some confidence to win some matches.
“I am trying to get my game more competitive. It is not easy but I am working on a lot of things but I think my confidence is the most important.
“Confidence and the work you put in show in the most important moments of matches, and you try and put the reps in to have that belief in your body.
“I am working on lots of areas. Let’s take volleys. I am not the best at the net on tour but I am capable sometimes of making some amazing volleys in important moments.
“One against Learner in Australia. You work every day on aspects of your game and sometimes they work in matches and sometimes not.
“I feel I am in a good position. I had a very good pre-season and a great week before the Australian Open. I remain calm.
“I am confident I can find my level and play my best in Rotterdam. When you have an amazing week and results and then you lose the next tournament early, you feel your good result is forgotten. That is tennis.
“It works both ways, when you have a bad result people focus on that until you play well again. I hope I can play well here this week at an event I have had success at.”
Daniil Medvedev excited for new generation after Australian Open loss to Learner Tien
Tien was among the rising stars to really shine at the Australian Open, with his fellow NextGen player Joao Fonseca also picking up a top 10 win against Andrey Rublev.
A total of five of the eight players from the 20-and-under tournament in Jeddah in December reached at least the second round in Melbourne, with Tien joined by fellow American Alex Michelsen in making it to round four.
Sharing his thoughts on that new group of ATP players, Medvedev noted: “I think it is normal to have a new generation coming. I think every generation probably had this. Young guys coming and beating top 10 players at majors.
“Learner played a great match and was able to win the next one even when we finished at three in the morning. So that showed he was ready for it and a good sign.
Daniil Medvedev Grand Slam finals “But with this new generation, there are a lot of good young guys. Some generations have more players coming through like this than others, but there are always great players coming.
“Let’s see what they are able to do over the coming period, that is tough. But for sure they have a very strong generation.”

After his surprising early exit at the Australian Open, Daniil Medvedev has been hard at work in training to improve one specific area of his game. The Russian tennis star recently revealed that he has been focusing on his mental toughness and staying calm under pressure. In a recent interview, Medvedev admitted that he struggled to maintain his composure during his match at the Australian Open, which ultimately led to his defeat. He acknowledged that he needs to work on controlling his emotions and staying focused, especially in crucial moments.
“I know that I have the skills and the talent to compete at the highest level, but I need to work on my mental game to ensure that I can perform at my best when it matters most,” Medvedev said.
The 25-year-old has been working closely with his coaches to develop strategies to improve his mental strength and resilience on the court. He has been practicing mindfulness techniques and visualization exercises to help him stay calm and composed during matches.
“I have been putting in the hard work in training to make sure that I can handle the pressure and stay focused on my game,” Medvedev added.
With his sights set on future tournaments, including the upcoming French Open, Medvedev is determined to bounce back stronger than ever. By pinpointing and addressing this key area of improvement, he is confident that he can elevate his game to new heights and compete with the best in the world.

Jannik Sinner has retained his Australian Open title with an emphatic 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Alexander Zverev, breaking new ground for Italian tennis and leaving his German rival smarting after a third Grand Slam final defeat.
World number one Sinner became Italy’s first player to win three Grand Slam crowns on Sunday, moving past Nicola Pietrangeli who won back-to-back men’s titles at Roland Garros in 1959-60.
“We worked a lot to be in this position again,” Sinner said at the trophy presentation, paying tribute to his team.
“It’s amazing to share this feeling with all of you, it’s amazing to achieve things and share it with you guys.
“Keep believing in yourself,” Sinner said to the defeated German. “We know how strong you are as a player and person, and you can lift a trophy.”

A year after mowing down Daniil Medvedev in five sets for his first major trophy, Sinner sapped his second Melbourne Park final of all drama by applying suffocating pressure and clinical execution.
Under the lights at Rod Laver Arena, he captured the decisive break in the sixth game when Zverev pushed a forehand long.
Arguably, the German’s spirit had already been broken by an unlucky net cord that turned the second-set tiebreak in Sinner’s favour.
Zverev went through the motions but gave up match point with a hopeful forehand that fell well wide of the line, allowing Sinner to seal the win with a backhand passing shot.
Sinner raised his arms in triumph as the crowd hailed the win, and then he clambered into the terraces to embrace his entourage.
Hanging over Sinner’s head has been a World Anti-Doping Agency appeal against his exoneration, with the global body seeking a long ban. He denies knowingly doping.
A hearing is scheduled at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for April.
He cast all the worries aside to notch a 19th career title and extend his incredible winning streak to 21 matches.

At 23, Sinner celebrates a title that cements his place as the game’s pre-eminent hard court player.
He was relentless from the get-go, holding to love twice in the first set before his first blemish on serve in the fifth game.
Zverev had to slog to save early break points and was second best in the rallies.
He grumbled to the chair umpire about a racquet not being re-strung at the change of ends when trailing 4-3.
He was broken in the next game while stranded at the net as Sinner blasted a forehand that nearly knocked the racquet out of Zverev’s grip.
Superb net play and a sharp backhand volley gave Sinner three set points and he converted the first with an ace.
Though outplayed in every facet, Zverev held on white-knuckled to take the second set into a tiebreak.
It was level pegging at 4-4 when the match turned viciously away from him as Sinner fired into the net cord and had the ball dribble over.
Sinner thumped down a huge serve to raise two set points and converted the first, firing a furious forehand winner from the baseline.
Gutted, Zverev smashed his racquet as he returned to his chair and whacked it again after sitting down.

The sting was entirely gone from the match as Zverev dropped serve to trail 4-2 in the third with a wild forehand that sailed over the baseline.
There would be no last stand from Zverev, nor any wobble from Sinner who did not cough up a single break point for the match as he savoured a third helping of Grand Slam glory.
“It sucks standing here next to this thing [trophy] and not being able to touch it, I’ll be honest,” Zverev said after the match.
“But congratulations to Jannik. You more than deserve it. You’re the best player in the world by far.
“I was hoping that I could be more competitive today, but you’re just too good. It’s as simple as that.”
Zverev was heckled before making his runner-up speech, with a person in the crowd repeatedly yelling – “Australia believes Olga and Brenda”.
In June last year, Zverev’s lawyers said he had agreed to a settlement after the mother of his child, Brenda Patea, accused him of physical abuse and a German court closed the case.
Zverev repeatedly rejected the allegations by Patea.
In January 2023, the ATP, citing insufficient evidence, closed an investigation that was launched after another ex-girlfriend, tennis player Olga Sharypova, accused Zverev of domestic abuse.

No.1 seeds Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend battled to the women’s doubles title at the 2025 Australian Open, holding off No.3 seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3 in a gripping final on Sunday.
Siniakova and Townsend lived up to their top-seeded billing on Rod Laver Arena, but they had to shake off a second-set comeback by Hsieh and Ostapenko before taking the match after 2 hours and 27 minutes of play.
“I’m happy with the way that we fought mentally and were able to fight through those tough moments and kind of overcome,” Townsend said in the champions’ press conference.
Increasing their totals: Holding one of the most impressive doubles résumés in the Open Era, Siniakova has now won 10 Grand Slam titles in women’s doubles. She is the first player to amass 10 women’s doubles Slams since Martina Hingis captured her 10th at 2015 Wimbledon.
“It’s really nice that you guys are still saying it and kind of remembering it,” Siniakova said. “I’m just, like, professional athlete. I’m just, like, working hard and trying to get more and more. When you guys come and say, ‘Oh, you did this,’ I’m really excited. So, yeah, it sounds perfect.”
The Czech’s Grand Slam trophy haul includes seven titles with Barbora Krejcikova, one with Coco Gauff, and now two with Townsend. This is her third Australian Open title, having won here in 2022 and 2023 with Krejcikova. Siniakova has won 29 WTA doubles titles overall.
Townsend has also been rapidly increasing her title count of late. The American has now won eight career WTA doubles titles, two of which are Slams, and seven of which have come after her return from maternity leave in 2022.
This was also Townsend’s first match on Rod Laver Arena since she won the Junior Australian Open title in 2012.
“It’s amazing that when you go out to these courts, you hold memories, and you remember what those feelings are,” said Townsend. “Being able to step back on the court and practice there, it kind of brought back those memories and how it felt, the little girl with braces and bows in her hair. It was really special.”
On the rise: Overall, it has been a whirlwind ascent to the top of the doubles hierarchy for the team of WTA Doubles World No.1 Siniakova and fifth-ranked Townsend, who have only been a regular tandem for eight months.
Siniakova and Townsend won last year’s Wimbledon title in their first Grand Slam event as a pairing — which was also Townsend’s first Slam as a pro. They followed up with a semifinal showing at the 2024 US Open before hoisting another major trophy on Sunday. They have gone 15-1 in their three Slams as a duo.
“I’m really enjoying being able to have this success with her because doubles is a partnership, and we’re a team,” said Townsend. “We win together; we lose together.
“I look at it as a part of history, where it’s nobody in our generation that is as decorated or that has accomplished the things that [Siniakova] has. So to be able to be on the same side as her, it’s an honor. I’ll be happy to continue to rack up those slams with her.”
Match moments: Still, it was an intense showdown before the top seeds took the crown. Former WTA Doubles World No.1 Hsieh was trying to defend her title (she won the 2024 Australian Open with Elise Mertens) and Ostapenko was trying to win her second straight Slam (she won the 2024 US Open with Lyudmyla Kichenok).
Siniakova and Townsend were dominant on return as they eased through the first set, where they had break points in all four of their opponents’ services games. Things were less cut-and-dry in the second set, but Townsend still served for a straight-sets win at 6-3, 5-4.
Things got tricky, though, as Hsieh and Ostapenko started to come up big in rallies, and they broke for 5-5 without facing championship point. The teams moved into a tiebreak, where Hsieh and Ostapenko extended their momentum. Hsieh fired a return winner to take the second set.
In the first game of the third set, Siniakova hit three double faults and was promptly broken, however she and Townsend quickly broke back to stop the skid. The top seeds held firm and at last took control for good by breaking the Hsieh serve for 5-3.
Helped by exceptional volleying from Townsend, Siniakova raced through her service game to reach triple championship point. One last forecourt putaway by Townsend converted their second match point, and the Czech-American duo were major champions once more.
In a thrilling showdown at the Australian Open, No.1 seeds Barbora Siniakova and Taylor Townsend battled their way to the doubles title. The dynamic duo displayed incredible teamwork and skill throughout the tournament, defeating tough opponents and showcasing their dominance on the court.Siniakova and Townsend’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, as they displayed impeccable shot-making, strong communication, and a relentless competitive spirit. Their chemistry and synergy were evident in every match they played, as they seamlessly worked together to outmaneuver their opponents and secure victory.
The final match was a true test of their abilities, as they faced off against a formidable opponent. However, Siniakova and Townsend rose to the occasion, showcasing their resilience and determination to come out on top and claim the coveted Australian Open doubles title.
Their victory is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and talent, and solidifies their status as a force to be reckoned with in the world of doubles tennis. Congratulations to Siniakova and Townsend on their well-deserved win!

Meet Anna Kalinskaya, girlfriend of 2025 Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner
The No. 1 seed in the Australian Open, Jannik Sinner, confirmed his status by winning the final in Sydney and things are progressing off the court as well for the Italian who has been in a relationship with a WTP player for the last few months.
Sinner on fire on and off the court
Sinner is known for his extraordinary baseline play and fantastic force with his forehand. That has carried him to the top of the men’s tennis world, but his persona both on and off the court is one of a mild mannered, quiet guy who keeps to himself.
That might be why his personal life and love life in particular was kept under wraps up until a few months ago. “I want to protect the people closest to me, keeping them out of this,” Sinner told Vanity Fair Italia last June. “I see it as a small task to carry out, almost a duty: they helped me, when I was young, to gain self-confidence, and today in some way I want to protect them.”
That may be the case, but there isn’t much hiding his sweetheart, Anna Kalinskaya who is also a professional tennis player. Rumors of a relationship were confirmed by Jannik in the spring of last year, and shortly after they were seen supporting one and other during the Wimbledon Championships last June. They were seen smooching in the stands of Arthur Ashe Stadium after Sinner won the U.S. Open title back in September.
Virus forces Kalinskaya to withdraw in Melbourne
Kalinskaya is a 26 year old Russian tennis player who has reached as high as 11th on the WTA Tour. She began her career at 17 winning the girl’s doubles at the 2016 Australian Open, and since then she has established herself as a mainstay on the tour with a current ranking of 14.
The two have more than just tennis in common, and understand each others busy lifestyles and hectic travel schedules. “Of course, it’s not easy, I travel a lot and during tournaments, I’m very focused. But I think it’s a beautiful thing when you find the right love. Like for everyone,” he said. “And then, if you think about it, the best tennis players in the world all have wives and children.”
Kalinskaya was forced to withdraw from her first round match up with Kimberly Birrell just hours before the match was set to get underway. After getting to the quarterfinals last year, the Russian was struck down with a virus in the days leading up to the Aussie Open.

“Not for a second did I think it was a done deal until the last rider went because any rider could have won.
“It’s always been a super important detail for me to spin in every direction, and try and keep a bit of soul in there with the switch McTwist at the start before it gets into a lot of spinning, really happy to get the triple in there this year as well which was a big goal of mine.
“It’s one of the best pipes in the world, there are no excuses but to go 110% on this thing, so you’ve got to bring your best if you want to stand on top, or even on the podium for that matter.”
The victory puts James move into equal first place on the World Cup standings alongside Yuto Totsuka of Japan on 230 points.

How much money and how many points did Madison Keys, Coco Gauff, Emma Raducanu earn at Australian Open?
Madison Keys walked away with the biggest winner’s cheque of her career after winning the 2025 Australian Open, but surprisingly not by that much compared to her 2017 US Open final runners-up earnings.
Eight years after losing the final at Flushing Meadows against Sloane Stephens, the 29-year-old returned to her first Grand Slam final and this time she was the last player standing.
The American produced a series of incredible performances as she defeated 10th seed Danielle Collins, sixth seed Elena Rybakina, 28th seed Elina Svitolina and second seed Iga Swiatek to set up a showdown with two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.
And it typically went the distance with Keys coming away a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 against the reigning world No 1.
But how much money and how many points did Keys and the other big names earn during the season-opening major at Melbourne Park?
Tennis’ newest Grand Slam winner earned A$3,500,000, which when converted comes to roughly US$2,211,000 and £1,780,000, just over 20% more than what she was paid in 2017 at the US Open.
On that occasion, she received a cheque of US$1,825,000 for finishing runner-up to Stephens in New York.
Keys started the Australian Open with career prize money of US$18,854,583 and it jumped to US$19,018,583 after her big payday.
The American also picked up 2,000 ranking points and will move up seven places to No 7 in the WTA Rankings, equalling her previous career high.
Sabalenka may not have defended her title, but she managed to hold off Swiatek in the battle for the No 1 ranking after reaching the final.
The Belarusian earned 1,300 points and sits on 8,956 points while she was also paid A$1,900,000 (US$1,2m and £1,9m).
Swiatek and Badosa were the two players who lost in the semi-finals and they received $1,100,000 (about US$695,000 and £559,000) to go with 780 points.
Coco Gauff, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Svitolina and Emma Navarro went out in the quarter-finals and each player went home with 430 points and A$665,000 (US$420,00 and £338,000).
WTA News
Does Aryna Sabalenka deserve the abuse flowing her way after Australian Open defeat?
The likes of Jasmine Paolini, Jessica Pegula, Collins, Jasmine Paolini, Ons Jabeur and Emma Raducanu lost in the third round and they earned A$290,000 (US$183,000 and £147,000) while 100 points were added to tallies in the WTA Rankings.
The players who lost in the first round earned 10 points (although those who came through qualifying will have picked up an extra 30 points) and A$132,000 (US$83,000 and £67,000) with an added bonus of A$72,000 if you won three matches in qualifying.
Lucky loser Eva Lys reached the fourth round and went home with A$420,000 (US$265,000 and £214,000) plus A$49,000 (US$31,000 and £$25,000) after reaching the second round of qualifying.
At the 2022 Australian Open, Madison Keys earned $648,850 and 780 points, Coco Gauff earned $299,100 and 780 points, and Emma Raducanu earned $158,250 and 240 points. These talented players put on impressive performances at the Grand Slam tournament and walked away with well-deserved earnings and ranking points. Congratulations to them on their achievements! #AustralianOpen #MadisonKeys #CocoGauff #EmmaRaducanu

Show „Are you the one“.

“I don’t want to talk, you know, so much about how I felt today,” Sinner told reporters after he won. “I was not feeling really well. I was struggling physically, but I don’t want to go into details, no? … I think it was a great match. I think that’s what we have to focus on, and some ups and downs.”

De Minaur had lost all nine previous meetings with Sinner, and that song remained the same. Sinner allowed just one break point, while feasting on six of 10 chances. He hit nearly three times as many winners as de Minaur, 27-10, and won six out of every 10 points when de Minaur hit a second serve. While game as ever, the undersized and underpowered Aussie simply had no place to hide.
Afterward, de Minaur heaped praise on Sinner and added: “After playing some great tennis on home soil and gaining so much, you feel like you just have been slapped across the face, to be honest, to finish off like that.”
Sinner’s semifinal opponent will be Ben Shelton, the diametrical opposite of de Minaur. The 22-year old American is 6-foot-4, solid of build, and blessed with great power. Shelton has beaten Sinner before (Shanghai in 2023), although the favorite won their last three meetings. Apart from a monstrous serve, Shelton has punishing groundstrokes, and a creative attacking style to go with his confidence-inducing history in Melbourne Park. He made his pro tour breakout by reaching the quarterfinals there two years ago.
The mild-mannered Tyrolean Terror Jannik Sinner has been steely at the Australian OpenJannik Sinner, the 20-year-old rising star from Italy, has been making waves at the Australian Open with his impressive performances on the court. Known for his calm demeanor and quiet intensity, Sinner has been showcasing his talent and determination in each match he plays.

With his powerful groundstrokes and strategic play, he has been able to take on some of the top players in the world and come out victorious.
Despite his mild-mannered nature off the court, Sinner transforms into a fierce competitor once he steps onto the court. His ability to stay focused and composed under pressure has been a key factor in his success at the Australian Open, where he has already defeated several higher-ranked opponents.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Jannik Sinner as he continues his quest for Grand Slam glory. With his steely determination and unwavering resolve, the Tyrolean Terror is sure to be a force to be reckoned with in the days to come.
