The Thing’s Forgotten Comic Book Adaptations Rescued Kurt Russell’s MacReady
John Carpenter‘s “The Thing” has one of the greatest horror movie endings of all time, but it also baffled audiences upon its initial release. After buckets of body horror and enough suspense to make your blood run cold, Carpenter left the world dangling by a thread, hoping that just like MacReady (Kurt Russell) and Childs (Keith David) in the movie’s final moments, we’d simply wait it out a while and see what happens. Nothing ever did, though, and you know what? For many, it’s why the film’s ending is perfect, leaving us to dread that the titular alien had consumed one or even both of the survivors of Outpost 31. More determined “Thing” fans still needed answers, however, and they actually got them courtesy of the Dark Horse comic book series “The Thing from Another World” (along with the other stories that spawned from it).Debuting in 1991, “The Thing from Another World…
John Carpenter’s 1982 film “The Thing” is a beloved cult classic that has stood the test of time as one of the greatest horror films ever made. However, what many fans may not realize is that this iconic movie was actually based on a comic book adaptation that helped rescue Kurt Russell’s character, MacReady, from obscurity. The Thing originally debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics in 1982, just a few months before the film’s release. Written by Bill Mantlo and illustrated by Brent Anderson, the comic book adaptation delved deeper into the story of MacReady and the other occupants of Outpost 31 as they battled against the shape-shifting alien creature.
While the film was met with mixed reviews and struggled at the box office, the comic book adaptation was a hit with fans and helped keep MacReady’s character alive in the minds of audiences. The comic book provided additional backstory and character development that was not fully explored in the film, giving fans a deeper understanding of MacReady’s motivations and struggles.
Thanks to the success of the comic book adaptation, Kurt Russell’s portrayal of MacReady became a cult favorite and helped solidify his status as a genre icon. The comic book also helped introduce a new generation of fans to the world of The Thing, ensuring that this timeless tale of paranoia and survival would continue to live on for years to come.
So the next time you watch John Carpenter’s The Thing, take a moment to appreciate the forgotten comic book adaptation that helped rescue Kurt Russell’s MacReady and keep this chilling tale alive for generations of fans to enjoy.

On which book is the new installment of the action crime series based? Explored in depth
Get ready for your next binge obsession as Reacher Season 3 is just a few days away! The hit Prime Video series brings back Alan Ritchson in his iconic role as Jack Reacher and promises more action, suspense, and new bad guys.
The former military policeman will dive into an undercover mission, fueled by revenge and constant challenges. He is tasked with taking down a powerful criminal organization, especially a character named Francis Xavier Quinn who has a dark history with Jack Reacher.
The twist? Reacher believed he was successful in killing Quinn in the past but turns out he is alive and even deadlier. While he usually prefers direct action, Reacher must go undercover to strike Quinn down.
While the Prime Video series is adapted from Lee Child’s acclaimed novel, the show doesn’t strictly follow the book order. This time, the showrunners have chosen Child’s seventh book, ‘Persuader’ for Reacher Season 3.
As seen in the trailer, Jack Reacher will have to face an enemy from the past, while also fighting other bad guys. Similarly, Quinn is the leading foe in Persuader, who killed Jack’s old ally, Dominique Kohl.
Now that Quinn is alive, Reacher’s got a score to settle, and he never misses!
Prime Video’s Reacher Season 3 is based on Lee Child’s Persuader
After nearly a year of anticipation, fans are getting Reacher Season 3 on February 20, 2025. While the show is based on Lee Child’s Reacher novels, it does not follow the chronological order. The first season followed the first book, while the second was based on Child’s eleventh book.
As for Reacher Season 3, the showrunners decided to adapt book seven ‘Persuader,’ in which Jack Reacher takes on an undercover mission. As promised by showrunner, Nick Santora (via The Hollywood Reporter):
“Reacher [in Season 3] is going to kick the crap out of people; he’s going to be incredibly smart and deductive in figuring things out; he’s going to be a hero and he is going to help save the day! He’s going to be Jack Reacher.”
Interestingly, this is what Lee Child’s Persuader is about. Reacher joins forces with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and finds out that his past enemy Quinn is connected to the DEA’s prime target Zachary Beck, a man suspected of being a wealthy drug smuggler.
As Reacher gets to dig deep into Beck’s history, he also gets to settle his score with Quinn. The book also talks about Jack Reacher’s past life, which will be shown as flashback scenes in Reacher Season 3.
It will reveal more about the former military policeman and how Francis Xavier Quinn’s actions led to the tragic death of Reacher’s young colleague. Not only this, but Child’s seventh book also introduces fans to DEA Agent Susan Duffy, who accompanies Reacher on his mission and becomes one of his love interests.
The role of Susan has been secured by Sonya Cassidy in Reacher Season 3, the actress who has been a part of several engaging TV series.

Why does Lee Child’s Persuader stand out?
Unlike most of his Reacher novels, Lee Child wrote Persuader in the first person, making it even more intense and dark. Additionally, the title Persuader isn’t just referring to Jack Reacher’s undercover mission, but also the Mossberg shotgun mentioned in the narrative.
Like its previous seasons, Reacher Season 3 will also stay true to Lee Child’s work, while making a few necessary changes to the TV format. The new chapter is set to bring back fan-favorite characters and some newcomers for a darker and action-packed thriller.

How a ‘bleak’ 30-year-old Belgian book about women caged in an underground bunker became Gen Z’s ‘favourite’ novel
Gen Z have been captivated by a Belgian 30-year-old book about women who are caged by men – which has sparked comparisons to dystopian thriller, The Handmaid’s Tale.
Readers on BookTok have been left sobbing and claim the ‘bleak’ sci-fi novel absolutely ‘ruined’ them – and the previously little-known work has gone from selling just a few copies annually to thousands per year being snapped up at book shops.
Pop star Dua Lipa even recommended it in her Service95 newsletter, which praised it as ‘evocative and thrilling’.
The plot of I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman tells the story of 39 women, who are kept in a bunker-type underground burrowing which is heavily guarded.
The prisoners are told nothing – and have no memory of how they got there – with only the flickering of a light to tell them anything about time or place.
However, one day an alarm sounds and the captured are free to leave – with the short book exploring what freedom means above ground.
The book has clearly had a profound effect on readers, with many taking to social media to express being equal parts impressed and devastated by the book.
‘Guys I am not OK,’ TikToker @this_bookish_thing said in a video, holding up the cover. ‘Finished it, broke my heart into a thousand little pieces.
Gen Z have been captivated by a Belgian 30-year-old book about women who are caged by men – which has sparked comparisons to dystopian thriller, The Handmaid’s Tale
‘I had a lump in my throat for most of the book… this ruined me.’
Others remarked that while the novel will leave you frustrated, it impressively handles thought-provoking themes.
‘The way passage of time is dealt with heightens this feeling of existential dread,’ @alinaslibrary said in her review. ‘It also contributes to how bleak this book feels.’
However, she found it will leave you with more questions than answers – and ‘you wont feel satisfied’.
‘I personally felt quite empty and overwhelmed at the same time after reading this one,’ she continued.
‘If that doesn’t sell it, I don’t know what will!’
Elsewhere, influencer @frostgalaxy called it ‘one of the best books she read’ in 2024. ‘I literally haven’t been able to stop thinking about this book since I finished it,’ she said

The book has also been praised for its ‘beautiful’ but ‘accessible’ writing and prose, and TikTok commenters have admitted to being unable to stop thinking about it after picking it up
Elsewhere, influencer @frostgalaxy called it ‘one of the best books she read’ in 2024.
‘I literally haven’t been able to stop thinking about this book since I finished it,’ she said.
‘Frustratingly, it poses and asks so many questions and yet refuses to answer any of them.
‘Bleak and unsettling in the endless pursuit of answers with an emotional edge that definitely leaves an impact. I’d highly recommend.’
And BookToker @nicolereads98 found that ‘this book makes you feel so grateful for everything you have in your life’.
‘It’s a great representation of how strong women can be, how amazing women can be when they come together as a team… how women do not need men to survive,’ she said.
‘The book is very bleak there were no answers to your questions – and it has some beautiful poetic prose.’
An independent bookshop recommended the read on TikTok, comparing it to another revered classic.

‘Let me tell you about a hauntingly beautiful book that had me hooked,’ @veranda.bookshop in London shared.
‘I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman is dystopian fiction but feels like so much more – it’s like stepping into a dream and then realizing it’s a nightmare you can’t wake up from.
‘It’s not action-packed, but it makes you think about existence, society, and loneliness in a way few books do.
‘This is the kind of book that crawls under your skin. It’s about survival but also so much deeper – a mix of The Handmaid’s Tale vibes with existential philosophy. Perfect if you love something unusual that makes your brain work overtime.
‘Recommended for: fans of quiet dystopian novels or anyone who wonders about “what it means to be human.” Warning: it will leave you with questions, but that’s half the fun.’
The book has also been praised for its ‘beautiful’ but ‘accessible’ writing and prose, and TikTok commenters have admitted to being unable to stop thinking about it after picking it up.
As shared by Goodreads, author Jacqueline Harpman was born in Etterbeek, Belgium, in 1929, ‘and fled to Casablanca with her family during WWII’.
‘Informed by her background as a psychoanalyst and her youth in exile, I Who Have Never Known Men is a haunting, heartbreaking post-apocalyptic novel of female friendship and intimacy, and the lengths people will go to maintain their humanity in the face of devastation,’ the platform added.
The Guardian reports that I Who Have Never Known Men has seen US shops struggling to keep copies of the book in stock, and in the UK, Waterstones’ head of books, Bea Carvalho called it a bestselling staple of fiction sections across our bookshops’.
According to the outlet, 45,000 copies sold last year – which is ‘an elevenfold rise on 2022’.
The book’s translator, Ros Schwartz, told the publication she has been surprised by the sudden fervour for the novel – but guesses it ‘just strikes a chord with the younger generation, which it didn’t at the time’.
‘And whether that’s to do with publicity or whether it’s completely random, I don’t know,’ she added. That’s one of the wonderful things about publishing – you never know.’
Ros’s first translation came out in the 90s – but decades later, in 2019, she released an updated version.
Nick Skidmore, publishing director at Vintage, also told the Guardian more curiosity in the novel may stem from its catchy title – as the translation was initially published as The Mysteries of Silence.
‘I think the book captures this sense of the world where people are feeling bewildered. It’s a profoundly existential book, like some of the classics resonating with gen Z right now – Dostoevsky’s White Nights, for example,’ he said.
‘The type of stories that engage with very weighty questions of our existence.’
In recent years, a surprising trend has emerged among Gen Z readers – a newfound love for a seemingly obscure and bleak 30-year-old Belgian novel about women trapped in an underground bunker. Originally published in 1991, “The Bunker Chronicles” by Belgian author Marie-Louise Gallet has seen a resurgence in popularity, with young readers hailing it as their new favorite novel. The novel follows the lives of five women who are held captive in a dark and oppressive underground bunker by a mysterious captor. As the women navigate their confinement and grapple with their own dark pasts, they form a bond that transcends their circumstances and ultimately leads to a daring escape.
So, what is it about this dark and unsettling story that has captured the hearts of Gen Z readers? Some suggest that the themes of resilience, friendship, and the enduring power of the human spirit resonate deeply with a generation facing an uncertain future. Others point to the novel’s exploration of complex female characters and the ways in which they navigate trauma and adversity.
Despite its bleak premise, “The Bunker Chronicles” has struck a chord with young readers who see themselves reflected in its themes of resilience, friendship, and the indomitable human spirit. As Gen Z continues to champion diverse voices and narratives in literature, this unexpected favorite is a testament to the enduring power of storytelling to connect us across time and space.

The comic book company that publishes the graphic novels and comics of Neil Gaiman announced this weekend that it would no longer work with him after a storm of sexual misconduct allegations and that it would halt the publication of his forthcoming “Anansi Boys” series.
The company, Dark Horse Comics, wrote on X on Saturday: “Dark Horse takes seriously the allegations against Neil Gaiman and we are no longer publishing his works.”
The announcement followed a New York magazine article this month that contained allegations that Mr. Gaiman sexually abused and assaulted multiple women over several years. Mr. Gaiman has emphatically denied the allegations and said in a statement on Jan. 14: “I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.”
The announcement by Dark Horse Comics, which is based in Milwaukie, Ore., is the latest fallout for Mr. Gaiman. Television adaptations of his work have been paused, productions have been dropped, and several publishers have backed away from working with him on any new projects. Dark Horse released the first of the “Anansi Boys” comic book series, which was an adaptation of Mr. Gaiman’s 2005 novel of the same name, in June. It was intended to be an eight-part series, seven of which have been released.
The New York magazine article, published on Jan. 13, gave shape to allegations that began circulating last summer, when several women appeared on a podcast titled “Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman.” After they accused the author on the podcast of sexually assaulting and abusing them, several of Mr. Gaiman’s film adaptations and Hollywood projects were dropped or paused.
The response has been slower in the literary and publishing industries, where the initial reaction to the allegations, and then to the New York magazine article, was more tepid. Still, publishers have begun distancing themselves from Mr. Gaiman. Several prominent writers have denounced him or pushed for his literary awards to be stripped.
In an internal memo to the staff of W.W. Norton earlier this month, the company’s president said that the publishing company would no longer work with Mr. Gaiman and would not take on any future projects from him.
HarperCollins, which has published many of Mr. Gaiman’s most popular titles, has said it does not have any new books planned from him.
Neither Mr. Gaiman’s lawyer nor his literary agent at Writer’s House responded to a request for comment.
In a shocking turn of events, renowned comic book publisher DC Comics has decided to drop Neil Gaiman following multiple sexual misconduct allegations. Gaiman, a celebrated author and comic book writer, has been accused by several individuals of inappropriate behavior and harassment. The decision to sever ties with Gaiman comes after a thorough investigation conducted by DC Comics, which revealed troubling evidence of misconduct. In a statement released by the publisher, they expressed their commitment to creating a safe and respectful workplace for all employees and collaborators.
Fans of Gaiman’s work are left reeling from the news, as the author’s contributions to the comic book industry have been significant and influential. However, many are also expressing their support for DC Comics’ decision to take a stand against sexual misconduct and prioritize the well-being of their employees.
As the #MeToo movement continues to shine a spotlight on issues of harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry, it is clear that no one, regardless of their talent or stature, is above accountability. The fallout from these allegations serves as a reminder that actions have consequences, and that no one is exempt from facing the repercussions of their behavior.
