Winter storm to dump snow on I-95 corridor
Two systems are expected to bring a mixture of rain and snow to parts of the eastern U.S. The first will largely bring rain from the Deep South to the Ohio Valley, setting up the second system that will produce snowfall on the I-95 corridor in the Northeast.
NEW YORK – The heavily traveled northeastern portion of the Interstate 95 corridor is expected to experience a significant bout of snow as a winter storm strengthens along the coastline.
The FOX Forecast Center is monitoring the potential for a widespread area of 1-3 inches of snow to start falling on Sunday evening from Washington, D.C. to Boston, with 5-8″ amounts expected to the north and west of Interstate 95.
Due to the expected snowfall in combination with dangerously cold air, the governor of New Jersey has issued a state of emergency and told residents to be ready to brace for below-zero wind chills.
“Following this weekend’s snow, we are expecting extreme cold with wind chills reaching -10° or below. Dangerously cold conditions are expected to persist through most of next week. Please limit your time outdoors and keep your pets inside as much as possible,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement on Saturday.
Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, schools, banks, and other services that would normally be in session on Monday have the day off, which will help keep roads clear for snow removal crews.

More than 30 million residents from the Appalachians to the Northeast are under some type of winter weather alert, which includes Boston, New York and Philadelphia.
Depending on how much snow falls, the system could produce the largest accumulations of the season for a region that has otherwise seen significant snowfall deficits.
Philadelphia sits at around 5″ of snowfall below normal, with New York City closer to half a foot behind what typically accumulates during the first half of winter.
Included in the zone of sleet and snow is the nation’s capital, where accumulations could reach 1-3 inches before the start of the 60th Presidential Inauguration on Monday.

The president-elect’s team said due to concerns over brutally cold air following the precipitation, most major inaugural events will take place indoors, which is a break from long-standing tradition.
Agencies around Washington, D.C. had been preparing for months for outdoor events, including a parade and the swearing-in ceremony.
The high temperature is expected to reach the mid 20s on Monday, which will plummet to near zero by Wednesday evening as the full scope of the Arctic air mass entrenches itself over the eastern two-thirds of the nation.

New Delhi: Outgoing US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will be holding the third round of initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) dialogue with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Monday to maintain the strategic convergence between two natural allies and push for high technology transfer to India.

While some may think that it will be a farewell call from Sullivan, it is understood that the two sides will discuss how to operationalize the Middle-East Economic Corridor, which has been hit by the conflict in Gaza. Top officials say that the MEEC is all set to take off with Israel managing to emasculate Iran-backed militias in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria and signatories to Trump backed Abraham Accords are ready to join the economic wagon.
Even though NSA Ajit Doval has had two telephonic conversations with incoming US NSA Mike Waltz, India will lay out the red carpet for NSA Sullivan with Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting him and his national security planners feting him as the outgoing top official of the Biden administration has gone out of his way to provide India access to critical technologies as well as bring India-US close on strategic ties.
During his soon to be completed tenure, Sullivan not only pushed for the F-414 jet engine deal between US defence major GE and India’s HAL, he also supported India on manufacture of semiconductors as an alternate global supply chain to China’s growing dominance. His support for US high-tech telecom technologies, weapon platforms, quantum computing and space for India has been noted by PM Modi and the Indian strategic community.
However, Sullivan, despite his young age, played a key part in putting pressure on Pakistan on cross-border terrorism against India and he also was the peacemaker when India-US tempers flared up on the Khalistani terrorist G S Pannun issue last year. The US NSA ensured that the India-US ties did not get derailed by daily anti-India rants by Pannun and also made sure that the Biden administration understood India’s sensitivities on Khalistani terrorism in Punjab and perceived support to these elements from Canada and UK.
In end-2024, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also paid a visit to Washington and met all top officials of the outgoing administration as well as new NSA Mike Waltz. The Indian Minister did not meet all those officials of the incoming Trump administration who need to be ratified by Capitol Hill. These meetings were planned well in advance so that there is no hic-up in India-US ties during the transition period.
