Peggy Noonan Declares Republicans ‘Are Beside Themselves With Anxiety’ Over Trump 2.0 — Even Those ‘Most Supportive’ of Him
(AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein)
Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan met with Republicans in Washington, D.C. last week and came away with the impression that they — “including those most supportive of the president” — are “beside themselves with anxiety” at the outset of President Donald Trump’s second term.
After remarking upon Trump’s ubiquity, Noonan declared that after meeting with members of both parties for four days, she found that the only subject to come up was Trump.
“Republican lawmakers, including those most supportive of the president, are beside themselves with anxiety. When you speak to them—off the record, between friendly acquaintances—and ask how it’s going, they shift, look off, shrug: You know how it’s going. A GOP senator who supports the president had a blanched look. ‘He doesn’t do anything to make it easy,’ he shrugged,” wrote Noonan, adding:
What is the meaning of the averted eyes and anxious faces? It means Trump 2.0 isn’t better. It means for all the talk of the new professionalism in the Trump operation, they have to get used to the chaos again and ride it, tempting the gods of order and steadiness. After one week they concluded the first administration wasn’t a nervous breakdown and the second isn’t a recovery; instead, again they’re on a ship with a captain in an extended manic phase who never settles into soothing depression.
The second rise of Donald Trump is a total break with the past—that stable order, healthy expectations, the honoring of a certain old moderation, and strict adherence to form and the law aren’t being ‘traduced’; they are ending. That something new has begun. People aren’t sure they’re right about this and no one has a name for the big break, but they know we have entered something different—something more emotional, more tribal and visceral.
“There is the strong man, and the cult of personality, and the leg-breakers back home who keep the congressional troops in line. In 2017, a lot of people who watch closely and think deeply, thought: We’re having an odd moment, but we’ll snap back into place,” Noonan concluded. “Now they are thinking something new has begun. American politics was a broad avenue with opposing lanes for a very long time, at least a century, and now we have turned and are on a different avenue, on a different slope, with different shadows.”
The post Peggy Noonan Declares Republicans ‘Are Beside Themselves With Anxiety’ Over Trump 2.0 — Even Those ‘Most Supportive’ of Him first appeared on Mediaite .
In a recent column for the Wall Street Journal, conservative commentator Peggy Noonan has declared that Republicans are “beside themselves with anxiety” over the emergence of Trump 2.0. Even those who have been most supportive of former President Donald Trump are now feeling uneasy about his return to the political spotlight.Noonan writes that many Republicans had hoped for a more subdued and statesmanlike version of Trump after his defeat in the 2020 election. However, with his recent rallies and endorsements of controversial candidates, it is clear that Trump is doubling down on his bombastic and divisive style.
According to Noonan, even Trump’s most ardent supporters are starting to worry about the impact his continued presence will have on the party. Some fear that his antics will alienate moderate voters and hurt the GOP’s chances in future elections.
Noonan’s column serves as a warning to Republicans that they may need to distance themselves from Trump in order to secure their political future. As the party grapples with internal divisions and the specter of Trump’s influence, it remains to be seen how they will navigate the challenges ahead.

#SoCalGas #Declares #Preferred #Dividends #MorningstarNurse dies from Ebola in Uganda as country declares first virus outbreak since 2022, health ministry says
KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A nurse in Uganda has died of Ebola, a health official said Thursday, in the first recorded fatality since the last outbreak ended in 2023.
The 32-year-old male nurse was an employee of Mulago Hospital, the main referral facility in the capital, Kampala, Diana Atwine, permanent secretary of the health ministry, told reporters Thursday.
WATCH NOW: Despite outbreak, Ebola treatment and vaccine represent ‘resounding scientific success’
After developing a fever, he was treated at several locations in Uganda before multiple lab tests confirmed he had been suffering from Ebola. The man died on Wednesday and the Sudan strain of Ebola was confirmed following postmortem tests, Atwine said.
At least 44 contacts of the victim have been identified, including 30 health workers and patients at Mulago Hospital, according to Uganda’s Ministry of Health.
The health authorities are “in full control of the situation,” Atwine said, urging Ugandans to report suspected cases.
Tracing contacts is key to stemming the spread of Ebola, and there are no approved vaccines for the Sudan strain of Ebola.
Uganda’s last outbreak, discovered in September 2022, killed at least 55 people before it was declared over in January 2023.
Confirmation of Ebola in Uganda is the latest in a trend of outbreaks of viral hemorrhagic fevers in the east African region. Tanzania declared an outbreak of the Ebola-like Marburg disease earlier this month, and in December Rwanda announced that its own outbreak of Marburg was over. The ongoing Marburg outbreak in northern Tanzania ‘s Kagera region has killed at least two people, according to local health authorities.
Ebola, which is spread by contact with bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials, manifests as a deadly hemorrhagic fever. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and at times internal and external bleeding.
Scientists don’t know the natural reservoir of Ebola, but they suspect the first person infected in an outbreak acquired the virus through contact with an infected animal or eating its raw meat. Ugandan officials are still investigating the source of the current outbreak.
Uganda has had multiple Ebola outbreaks, including one in 2000 that killed hundreds. The 2014-16 Ebola outbreak in West Africa killed more than 11,000 people, the disease’s largest death toll.
Ebola was discovered in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks in South Sudan and Congo, where it occurred in a village near the Ebola River, after which the disease is named.
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of a nurse from Ebola in Uganda, as the country declares its first virus outbreak since 2022. The health ministry has confirmed that the nurse contracted the deadly virus while caring for patients in a local hospital. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of Ebola, and the importance of vigilance in preventing its spread. The health ministry is working tirelessly to contain the outbreak and prevent further infections.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the nurse who lost their life to this devastating disease. We urge the public to remain calm but vigilant, and to follow all recommended safety measures to protect themselves and others from Ebola.
Let us come together as a community to support each other during this challenging time, and to work towards ending this outbreak once and for all. Stay safe, stay informed, and stay strong.

Earthquake assessment declares humanitarian needs in Oromia’s Fentale district ‘severe’; seismic activities affect three out of four residents
Due to recent seismic activities, close to 100,000 individuals have been displaced in the Afar, Oromia, and Amhara regions (Photo: Addis Standard Source) Addis Abeba – A recent seismic earthquake impact assessment conducted in the Fentale district of the East Shewa Zone, Oromia region, revealed that humanitarian needs in the area remain “severe” as communities grapple with the cumulative impact of multiple shocks, including conflict and drought.
Conducted jointly by the government and humanitarian partners, the impact assessment report disclosed a critical situation at the lower administrative level with Daga Hedu Kebele classified as facing “severe” humanitarian needs, while Benti Kebele confronts “extremely severe” conditions.
The report also identified other vulnerable kebeles near the Fentale Mountain epicenter, including Haro Kersa, Debiti, and Kobo.
Since late September 2024, parts of Afar, Oromia, and Amhara have experienced significant seismic activity, with its effects reaching as far as the capital, Addis Abeba.
In recent weeks, seismic activity has intensified, with approximately five tremors recorded daily, ranging in magnitude from 4.3 to 5.8. While the epicenter of these tremors appears concentrated in regions such as Awash within the Afar region, the impact assessment report underscores their pervasive influence, affecting “all 18 kebeles” situated within the Fentale district.
Last week, Addis Standard reported that recent seismic activities have displaced nearly 10,000 residents in the North Shewa Zone of the Amhara region, which borders the Afar region. This displacement adds to the 80,000 people affected in the Afar and Oromia regions, bringing the total number of people impacted across the three regions to nearly 100,000.
Close to 20,325 individuals displaced from the Fentale district have been evacuated to 11 designated Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) sites.
“In most assessed sites, the impact of the seismic shocks on living conditions was reportedly very high, affecting up to three out of four individuals in local communities,” the impact assessment stated. “Many displaced persons are living in precarious conditions near Metahara town without access to food, shelter, or essential non-food items. They are sleeping in open areas without mats or plastic sheets, as the sudden displacement left them unable to bring their belongings.”
It further underscored significant public health risks stemming from the earthquake, with limited access to clean water and sanitation increasing the likelihood of “disease outbreaks.”
Recently, Addis Standard reported that displaced individuals in the Afar region are residing in overcrowded shelters with limited access to food, water, and essential supplies. According to residents displaced by the recent seismic activities, the aid provided by the government and humanitarian organizations remains “insufficient.” AS
The recent earthquake assessment in Oromia’s Fentale district has revealed that humanitarian needs are deemed ‘severe’ in the region. The seismic activities have affected three out of four residents, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance. The assessment, conducted by experts in the field, has identified a range of critical needs including shelter, food, water, and medical supplies. The earthquake has caused widespread destruction, leaving many families homeless and in desperate need of support.
As the situation in Fentale district continues to worsen, it is crucial that immediate action is taken to provide aid to those affected. The humanitarian community must come together to address the urgent needs of the residents and ensure that they receive the assistance they require to rebuild their lives.
Our thoughts are with the people of Fentale district during this challenging time, and we urge the international community to rally together to support those in need. Together, we can make a difference and help the residents of Fentale district recover from this devastating natural disaster.

INVOKING A NATIONAL EMERGENCY: Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order invoking the National Emergencies Act regarding the crisis at the Southern Border of the United States.
- The Executive Order declares a national emergency at the southern border following four years of record-shattering illegal immigration into the U.S.
- It directs the Secretary of Defense to deploy additional personnel to the border, including members of the Armed Forces and the National Guard.
- Additionally, it directs the Secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security to finish the wall along the southern border and ensures that DHS has all the flexibility it needs to operate air missions near the border.
TAKING BACK CONTROL: For the past four years, the federal government has abdicated its responsibility to enforce the border, resulting in a catastrophic immigration crisis for the United States.
- When States like Texas took steps to prevent illegal crossings into their state, the federal government sought to stop them by cutting down their barriers.
- A record-shattering 8.72 million border encounters have occurred at the southern border from FY21-FY24, overwhelming border resources and endangering communities.
- This has led to untold hundreds of thousands of children being trafficked. Roughly 550,000 unaccompanied alien children have been encountered at the border since FY21. Fentanyl and other drugs are pouring over the border and flooding our communities, killing roughly 75,000 Americans in 2023—the number one cause of death for Americans ages 18-45.
- It has allowed dangerous gangs like the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua to takeover and terrorize entire American cities.
- And it has led to the murders of innocent Americans like Laken Riley, Jocelyn Nungaray, Rachel Morin, and many others.
BUILDING ON PAST SUCCESS: America is in a dire situation, and it is past time for the government to act. President Trump first declared an emergency at the Southern Border on February 15, 2019, and continued that emergency on February 13, 2020.
- Following the at-the-time historic surges of illegal aliens in 2018, President Trump declared a national emergency and successfully reduced the number of people seeking to enter the country illegally.
- In 2024, President Trump promised to declare an emergency to secure the border and use the military where necessary to protect Americans from foreign threats.
- This Executive Order will allow the government to gain operational control of the border, combat the cartels, and secure our nation.
- As President Trump described in 2018: “Illegal immigration affects the lives of all Americans. Illegal immigration hurts American workers; burdens American taxpayers; and undermines public safety; and places enormous strain on local schools, hospitals, and communities in general, taking precious resources away from the poorest Americans who need them most. Illegal immigration costs our country billions and billions of dollars each year…And I will therefore take every lawful action at my disposal to address this crisis. And that’s what we’re doing.”
President Donald J. Trump Declares a National Emergency at the Southern Border – The White HouseIn a bold and decisive move, President Donald J. Trump has declared a national emergency at the southern border of the United States. This declaration comes after months of debate and controversy over the issue of illegal immigration and border security.
The President’s decision to declare a national emergency is aimed at addressing the ongoing crisis at the border, where thousands of migrants are attempting to cross into the country illegally every day. By declaring a national emergency, President Trump is able to access additional funding and resources to help secure the border and protect the American people.
In a statement released by the White House, President Trump stated, “I have no choice but to declare a national emergency at our southern border. The situation has reached a critical point and we must take action to protect our country and our citizens.”
The President’s decision has already been met with both support and criticism from lawmakers and the American public. However, President Trump remains steadfast in his commitment to securing the border and upholding the rule of law.
As the national emergency at the southern border continues to unfold, the White House will provide updates and information on the administration’s efforts to address this pressing issue. Stay tuned for more developments on this important issue.

California city declares itself a ‘non-sanctuary’ city
Leaders in one Southern California city fed up with the state’s immigration policies have voted to become a “non-sanctuary” city and ignore the state’s sanctuary laws.
The resolution was approved by the Huntington Beach City Council on Tuesday night by a unanimous 7-0 vote. Mayor Pat Burns, who introduced the legislation, “Non-Sanctuary City for Illegal Immigration for the Prevention of Crime,” said the move was a matter of public safety.
“This is in the best interest of our community, Huntington Beach, to make sure that we utilize every facet of law enforcement we can to make it the best place to live,” Burns, a former law enforcement officer, said during Tuesday’s meeting alongside a small bust sculpture of President Donald Trump.
The move directs the city’s police officers to work with federal immigration authorities and notify immigration officials when they are about to release an illegal immigrant from jail.

Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns introduced a resolution to make the Southern California city a “non-sanctuary” city. (City of Huntington Beach)
The resolution “deliberately sidestep[s] the Governor’s efforts to subvert the good work of federal immigration authorities and to announce the city’s cooperation with the federal government, the Trump Administration and Border Czar Tom Homan’s work,” the city said in a news release.
Sanctuary cities prohibit their law enforcement personnel from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. The practice has come under scrutiny for shielding criminal illegal immigrants from being deported.

In addition to the resolution, Huntington Beach is suing the state over its sanctuary state laws, which it claims are unconstitutional.
Before the vote, Councilman Chad Williams chided state lawmakers for enacting policies to protect illegal immigrants, including those convicted of violent crimes.
“If we want to voluntarily cooperate with federal authorities to protect our community, that is absolutely our prerogative,” he said. “It’s just basic common sense. Why wouldn’t you want to use every tool available to keep your community safe?”

The resolution text mentions crimes committed by illegal immigrants on behalf of criminal gangs like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, which gained widespread attention after its members allegedly terrorized residents at a Colorado apartment complex.
Tuesday’s vote came weeks after California Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed a “Trump-proof” legal defense fund of up to $25 million for California’s justice department. Trump has promised to target criminal illegal immigrants for deportation.
“In California in particular, fighting crime is difficult enough with the relaxed criminal laws and lack of enforcement. The State should get out of the way of local law enforcement, stop handcuffing our police officers and California’s cities, and get back to the business of protecting innocent citizens,” Huntington Beach City Attorney Michael Gates said in a press release.

“Emphatically, the State should not take a position of violating federal immigration laws or encouraging cities to violate federal immigration laws.”
The city of Modesto, California has made headlines by declaring itself a “non-sanctuary” city. This decision comes in response to the controversial sanctuary city policies that have been implemented in other parts of the state. In a statement released by the city council, officials expressed their belief that sanctuary city policies pose a threat to public safety and national security. They cited concerns about potential crime and the strain on resources that can result from providing sanctuary to undocumented immigrants.
The decision to declare Modesto a non-sanctuary city has sparked debate and divided opinions within the community. Supporters of the move argue that it will help to uphold the rule of law and protect citizens from potential dangers. Opponents, however, argue that it goes against the values of inclusivity and compassion that California is known for.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact the city of Modesto and its residents. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH IS GOING AGAINST THE GRAIN IN THE SANCTUARY STATE OF CALIFORNIA.
HUNTINGTON BEACH DECLARING ITSELF AS A NON-SANCTUARY CITY TUESDAY AFTER A UNANIMIOUS VOTE BY ITS CITY COUNCIL IN FAVOR OF THE PROPOSAL INTRODUCED BY MAYOR PAT BURNS.
THE DESIGNATION SUBVERTS A STATE LAW KNOWN AS THE CALIFORNIA VALUES ACT OR S-B-54, WHICH LIMITS LOCAL AUTHORITIES’ ABILITY TO COOPERATE WITH FEDERAL IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS.
THE STATE LAW DOES HAVE EXCEPTIONS FOR VIOLENT CRIMES, SEX ABUSE AND FELONIES.
AS STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS PREVIOUSLY REPORTED, HUNTINGTON BEACH IS CURRENTLY CHALLENGING S-B-54 FOR THE SECOND TIME SINCE 2018 IN A LAWSUIT FILED EARLIER THIS MONTH.
THE CITY ARGUES THE CALIFORNIA VALUES ACT VIOLATES THE U-S CONSTITUTION BY RESTRICTING LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT’S COOPERATION WITH ICE AGENTS.
BURNS TOLD CALIFORNIA’S K-A-B-C NEWS UNDER THE FRESHLY PASSED RESOLUTION, LOCAL POLICE WILL BE ABLE TO FOLLOW FEDERAL IMMIGRATION RULES ISSUED BY THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION.
[PAT BURNS]
WE NEED EVERY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, WHENEVER CALLED UPON, WHETHER IT BE FIGHTING TERRORIST, WHETHER IT BE FIGHTING PURSE SNATCHERS, OR WHATEVER IT IS, WE HAVE TO HAVE EVERY LAW ENFORCEMENT TOOL TO BEST SERVE OUR CITIZENS.
[CRAIG NIGRELLI]
BURNS SAID THE RESOLUTION DOES NOT MEAN POLICE WILL BE PATROLLING FOR UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS OR CHECKING PAPERS.
HE MAINTAINS IT ONLY LOOSENS STATE RESTRICTIONS ON LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT TO MAKE THE CITY A SAFER PLACE.
HOWEVER, SOME HUNTINGTON BEACH RESIDENTS TOLD K-A-B-C THEY’RE OPPOSED TO THE DECLARATION AND BELIEVE IT’S A DANGER TO SOME WITHIN THE COMMUNITY.

IT REALLY DISAPPOINTS ME BECAUSE WE HAVE SEPARATION OF FEDERAL VERSUS STATE LAWS FOR THIS REASON BECAUSE WE NEED TO PROTECT OUR CITIZENS WITHIN CALIFORNIA AND ESPECIALLY WITHIN HUNTINGTON BEACH.
[CRAIG NIGRELLI]
BURNS DISAGREES.
SAYING IT’S PUTTING THE CITY “FIRST” WHILE CONTENDING IT’S NOT MEANT TO CREATE A FIGHT BETWEEN THE CITY AND STATE.
THE MOVE BY THE CITY COMES AS FEDERAL AUTHORITIES ARE REPORTEDLY INITIATING MASS DEPORTATION EFFORTS ACROSS THE NATION UNDER ORDERS FROM THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION.
GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM HAS YET TO RESPOND TO HUNTINGTON BEACH’S DECLARATION.

Huntington Beach, a city in Southern California, has made headlines by declaring itself a “non-sanctuary” city in the sanctuary state of California. The city council voted unanimously to reject the state’s sanctuary laws, which limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. This decision has sparked controversy and debate within the community, with some residents applauding the city’s stance on immigration enforcement, while others criticize it as being divisive and discriminatory.
Huntington Beach’s move to opt out of the sanctuary laws is seen as a bold statement against California’s progressive approach to immigration policy. The city’s defiance has also raised questions about the power dynamics between local and state governments when it comes to immigration enforcement.
As tensions continue to rise surrounding the issue of sanctuary cities, Huntington Beach’s decision serves as a reminder of the ongoing debate over immigration policy in the United States. Only time will tell how this move will impact the city and its relationship with the state of California.
