Unai Emery interview: Jhon Duran exit means Aston Villa out to reshape attack with emphasis on ‘recovering talents’ | Football News
In the week that Aston Villa confirmed their place in the last 16 of the Champions League, they also sold their top scorer. Jhon Duran’s departure will be a disappointment to some. The challenge for Unai Emery is to ensure the changes make Villa stronger.
Dealing with the twin tests of the Premier League and Europe has been a theme of the season. They go to Wolves on Saturday after the high of that victory over Celtic on Wednesday knowing that they have not won after a European game since September.
But these past few weeks, in which Diego Carlos and Emiliano Buendia have also left the building, have included the added distraction of the transfer window. How is the man expected to manage all these moving parts coping with the myriad demands?
“Always, in football, it is a busy time,” Emery tells Sky Sports. “Even when you are resting, even when you are on holiday, always our minds are thinking something around football, around the squad, around the players, around the objectives we can face.”
Another constant topic of the campaign has been how to accommodate Duran alongside Ollie Watkins in the Villa team. It was a conundrum that Emery was never able to solve. Their last game together, for half an hour in Monaco, was not a success.
Speaking at the club’s training ground, as the screens playing Sky Sports News tell of interest in Joao Felix, Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford, Emery explains his plans for life post-Duran. Do not expect him to try to replace the Colombian striker like for like.
“We are in a new way,” he insists. “I am practising how we can play with Donyell Malen. The club is working [on players] to join us but, of course, now we have players in the squad ready to play, ready to be versatile as well and to play in different positions.”
Malen, a £21m signing from Borussia Dortmund, made his debut on the right wing off the bench against West Ham but Emery believes he can use him as a striker if needed. It is a better solution, perhaps. Players who can cover Watkins but also play with him.
“Ollie has always been consistent and usually he can play because he is a very strong player, physically as well, playing 90 minutes in a row of matches. But of course we have to have one plan B in case he is not available for 90 minutes or to play some matches.
“But we have players in the squad with this possibility. Donyell Malen and Morgan Rogers played as a striker. Of course, we are watching the transfer window’s last days, if we can sign a striker a striker with the possibility to be versatile in the attacking third.”
Versatility has been essential of late. Against West Ham, an injury to Tyrone Mings required Lucas Digne to play as a makeshift centre-back. Against Celtic, Boubacar Kamara played there with Matty Cash’s early exit forcing Lamare Bogarde to right-back.
“The players we have I am very proud of how they respond in different circumstances with the level we need to achieve. We drew at home to West Ham but we reacted very well against Celtic last Wednesday and the response was coming quick.
“The most important thing is that they respond not after but before, when we need them, how they are prepared to do it. This is what I am most proud of. I can feel the players are always open to help and to support every decision that I have to make.”
Getting more from players is what Emery does. It is worth reminding that nine of the starting line-up that beat Celtic were at the club when he arrived in October 2022, with Villa languishing in the bottom six of the Premier League table. He improves players.
He fixes them too, preferring to coax the best from a talent that had not been maximised than take someone with a lower ceiling. This is something Monchi, Villa’s president of football operations, referenced when addressing the interest in Joao Felix and Asensio.
‘Recovering talents’
Putting Monchi’s comments to Emery, in which he called him the best at ‘recovering talents’, he replies: “We worked in Sevilla for four years together. He is speaking about two players, they are not playing in their club now consistently, Asensio and Joao Felix.”
“They are potential players, maybe we can add, but we have other players waiting on our list.” The same, of course, could be said of Rashford. “If some of them are coming, this is my challenge, try to get the best of them and try to be protagonists with them.
“But I am positive about the process, the demand we face with the players we have. As a team, we have John McGinn back from injury. Jacob Ramsey as well, hopefully we can get Ramsey the consistency for the next month like he did not have last year.
“Really, this is my motivation, how we can manage as well the player that we have and how we can manage as well the objective we have in front of us.” The next objective? Well, that is simple. Put Europe to the back of their minds and beat Wolves on Saturday.
“After playing in Europe, the motivation we have to play in the Premier League should be the same. We only need to rest, get good sleep, recover energy and then play. This is how we want to build our team, our mentality as players, as a team and as a club.
“Of course, you have to enjoy it as well. Playing different competitions, matches every few days. We are focusing on Wolves. It means a lot for the supporters. We will try to get our best performances collectively, individually, try to compete and try to win.
“Each match is a challenge. Now, the most important is against Wolves. My interest in winning is the same as the Champions League. Even more so in the Premier League because it is through the Premier League that we are going to achieve our objectives.”

In a recent interview, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery discussed the departure of Jhon Duran and the club’s plans to reshape their attack with a focus on “recovering talents.”Duran, who recently left Villa for a new challenge, was a key player in the team’s attack. Emery acknowledged his contributions but emphasized that the club is now looking to refocus their strategy.
“We thank Jhon for his time with us and wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” Emery said. “But now, we are looking to reshape our attack and bring in players who can help us achieve our goals.”
Emery revealed that the club is placing a strong emphasis on “recovering talents” – players who may have been overlooked or undervalued in the past but have the potential to make a big impact.
“We believe that there are many talented players out there who just need the right opportunity to shine,” Emery explained. “We are committed to finding and developing these players to help strengthen our squad.”
Fans of Aston Villa can look forward to seeing some new faces in the team as Emery and his staff work to reshape the attack and bring in fresh talent. With a focus on recovering talents, the club is aiming to build a stronger and more competitive squad for the upcoming season.

Friday afternoon saw the official announcement of the latest coup Saudi Arabia has struck against the traditional soccer establishment. Jhon Durán, Aston Villa’s impossibly cool backup striker, is headed to Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, which has acquired the Colombian’s services for a reported transfer fee of €77 million. The move is just the latest escalation of an ongoing trend that has seen dozens of legitimately top-level talents eschew Europe’s big leagues in favor of Saudi Arabia’s big bucks. Like all those other moves, this one sucks ass.
The word “unprecedented” has already been attached to several previous transfers into the SPL, but it needs to be trotted out once again to describe the Durán move. This one’s a lot like the Gabri Veiga transfer, only much, much more significant. Veiga was (and I guess still is?) a young prospect with genuine potential to one day reach the elite of the elite, but was not yet of serious interest to the top clubs as anything other than a flier. Durán, in contrast, has already gotten the big boys’ tongues wagging. He’s proven his scoring prowess in the best league in the world. He’s played, and played well, in the Champions League. He’s probably the single best U23 striker prospect in the world. West Ham and Chelsea both came close to signing him last summer, and his star has only risen since then. Aston Villa didn’t hesitate to slap down the £57 million bid West Ham sent for Durán about a week ago, no doubt expecting that in a mere matter of months even bigger clubs—the likes of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Barcelona have all reportedly been keeping a close eye on him—would come offering even bigger money. Anyone who pays attention to this stuff would’ve predicted that, by this time next year, Durán would have been either the face of Aston Villa’s attack or the splashy new signing of one of Europe’s perennial contenders. Veiga could’ve maybe, eventually gotten to where Durán is now, right on the doorstep of the soccer elite. And yet Durán, like Veiga, turned away.
I think I said enough last time about what the Saudi incursion says about the broader structure of soccer, so I won’t subject you to a rehash of that here. The only thing I’ll note there is that, while the flurry of high-profile signings has certainly cooled since those first couple transfer windows, at this point it does seem like the Saudis are committed to the bit. Anyone thinking this might turn out to be another short-lived phenomenon like the Chinese Super League should probably already be thinking otherwise.
Instead of a zoomed-out look at the state of the game, let’s focus on the player himself this time. Durán is so good. I really think that the only thing standing between him and widespread acclaim as one of the best strikers in the world is playing time. Like any player, he of course has things he could improve on, and like any young player, his game of course has aspects that need ironing out in order for him to reach his full potential. But with him it’s less about projecting whether or not he’ll develop the skills necessary to become an elite player and more a simple matter of him revealing that he already is.
That’s part of what’s so depressing about Durán leaving for Saudi Arabia. Few things in sports are more rewarding that witnessing a young talent you’re sure will soon explode do just that. Durán’s explosion seemed practically inevitable, as was the likelihood that the resulting fireworks would regularly dazzle the sky of London or Manchester or Barcelona or even Paris depending which of the big clubs snapped him up, giving the greater part of the soccer world a literal or metaphorical front-row seat to the show. His talent is so immense already that I still think Durán will explode (worse environments have proven able to light the fuses of great players, and it can’t be denied at this point that the SPL is a serious, challenging league), but it’s a damn shame that most of us won’t get to see it the way we otherwise would have.
And it’s that inevitability of Durán’s talent that brings up the part that really concerns me. Will we ever really get to see Durán at his best? As comfortable, middle-class Westerners, it would be presumptuous of us to offer any harsh criticism of Durán, who grew up in a lower-class neighborhood in Medellín, for accepting a contract that will probably keep multiple generations of his family safe from financial precarity. What’s more, because his talent is so big and his career so young, it’s not like this 5.5-year contract necessarily means he’s consigned the entirety of his professional future to Saudi Arabia. As the optimists are always pointing out in situations like this, there’s nothing preventing Durán from spending a couple years in the SPL, earning more money than he could ever waste if he tried, and then returning to Europe, to the stadiums and teams and competitions that really matter, and shining brightly once again. And surely he’ll at the very least be there with the Colombia national team, enjoying in Copas América and World Cups at least some of the spotlight he’s now giving up at club level. It’s not the future most fans would prefer, but it’s better than nothing.
But how realistic is it that Durán actually will come back to us? There’s no direct precedent here to look to for guidance, but there are some analogous situations, and the image they paint isn’t terribly optimistic. What Qatar has done with PSG is a little similar to what Saudi Arabia is doing with the SPL, and we’ve seen how intransigent PSG has been when it comes to the prospect of releasing one of the great players from their golden cage. If Durán plays as well as you’d imagine, is there any number at which Al-Nassr would feel obligated to sell him to a club not backed by an unlimited sovereign wealth fund? If Durán tries to force his way out, is there any reason to believe Al-Nassr would have to give in? If it requires Durán running out the entirety of his contract and leaving for free, isn’t there a number Al-Nassr could come up with, one completely outside the bounds of what the business of soccer itself could support, to convince him to stay? Basically all of that is what happened with Kylian Mbappé and PSG, and I think there’s reason to believe that Durán’s potential escape from Saudi Arabia would prove even tougher than Mbappé’s from France.
I mentioned above that the SPL already looks like a bigger threat to the soccer status quo than the Chinese league did during those brief couple years when it too was spending crazy money, but one player’s fate in China has me most worried about Durán’s. Brazilian do-it-all midfielder Oscar was off to a great start to his European career back in December of 2016, when CSL club Shanghai SIPG (now known as Shanghai Port) stunned the world by signing the 25-year-old away from Chelsea for £60 million, at the time an astonishing fee. For four-and-a-half years Oscar had been a Chelsea regular, maybe not always a surefire starter but always a key resource on the roster. The idea that he’d leave one of the biggest teams in the world, right in the thick of his prime, to go play in China absolutely beggared belief. Nevertheless, it was hard to blame him for leaving Europe for the promise of a life-changing contract of multi-generational dimension, and the thinking was that he was still young enough, and already proven enough, that the big leagues of Europe would always be waiting for him if and when he wanted to return.
Unless you, like me, were so captivated by the sad strangeness of Oscar’s move that you’ve tried keeping tabs on him, you’ve probably not heard the Brazilian’s name much over the intervening eight years. Oscar was every bit as good as Shanghai could’ve hoped, being easily the best player in the league, scoring and assisting 142 goals in 175 games. Every couple years his name would pop up in the European rumor mill, some passing mention that he might be ready to return to the stage he’d left and that some big club was potentially interested, but nothing stronger ever materialized. Three years into his original four-year contract, player and club signed a lucrative extension that was to keep him in China until December of 2024. Last month the now 33-year-old midfielder finally did leave Shanghai, citing his desire to be closer to family after so long away, and announced that he would join São Paulo, the club he’d left as a 19-year-old kid when, with a dream of glory and a better future, he signed with Chelsea.
It’s hard not to see in Oscar’s past a potential vision of Durán’s future. And it’s not only Durán. To name just a few players with the highest ceilings, Veiga, Moussa Diaby, and Ezequiel Fernández all also have the potential to reach the very top, but now have a dubious path to get there.
Soccer is a collective sport, not only in the obvious sense that it is played by two teams of 11 teammates, but also in how it is only made possible through the collective processes—the fans who care about it, the societies that cultivate it, the cultures that mark it, the social foundations that create and maintain the clubs in whose name it is played, the players who from childhood all the way to the professional level accompany and collaborate with and challenge and encourage and improve the tiny percentage of players we watch on TV every weekend along their long journeys to the top—that produce it. It’s in this sense that soccer or any other sport, any other cultural practice or institution for that matter, belongs to us, a sense of ownership at least equal to the players and coaches who partake in it and certainly more so than the vultures who profit from it. It sucks that we won’t get to enjoy one of the most succulent fruits of this collective labor, as Durán has instead been captured by forces that really only covet him as a trophy to their own vanity. But hey, maybe he’ll be back. Here’s hoping, at least.

Jhon Duran joins Al-Nassr: The journey from Colombia to Saudi via the MLS and Premier League
Pelzer was a German defender who played for several teams in his homeland – plus 18 months at Blackburn.
Sadly his time at Ewood Park was blighted by injuries and he managed just one League Cup game against Walsall in 2002.
In December 2019, four years after retiring from playing, Pelzer got his first job with a club – technical director of MLS side Chicago Fire.
A few months into the job he went to Envigado to scout a defender – who they also went on to sign.
“I was watching our main target Carlos Teran at the time,” he told BBC Sport. “Jhon got subbed in later on and you could already see how good he was.
“He was a raw talent but you could see his speed and acceleration. In the air he was a handful for the defenders already.
“From my experience in England I knew he had already something for England. That was something where you could have the fantasy he could make it. It was a wow effect.”
But there was a twist – in the form of an article headlined ‘Next Generation 2020: 60 of the best young talents in world football’ that included Duran.
“A few weeks later the Guardian brought a list out, external and after that it was a race,” said Pelzer.
“We wanted to get him somehow but the clock was ticking. There were so many other teams chasing him as well. We were convinced about his qualities.”
Again, Duran’s strong family roots were evident during negotiations.
“During the pandemic we had to be creative,” said Pelzer. “We had to get in touch with the family – that was not that easy. Finally we made it, we got everyone on the same page.
“We showed him how he would progress here. We had a lot of conversations with his family and that was also something that helped a lot in the moment.”
And so in January 2021 a 17-year-old Duran became the youngest international signing in MLS history – for a fee of $2.5m (£1.8m).
But he could not move until he turned 18 – so spent the next year on loan with Envigado.
As well as playing and training with his Colombian club, he had weekly individual training sessions for the Fire.
“It was important for us that he was well prepared,” said Pelzer. “In acceleration, technique, finishing, a lot of jumping exercises, we trained him.
“You could see the numbers every week were better, better. The trajectory was already going in the direction you could see if he trains well and is focused on his work he can achieve a good level.”
After a total of nine goals in 47 games for Envigado, Duran left for the States. “For a young South American boy coming into a country like the US it was different,” said Pelzer.
“The city is huge compared to where he came from. Of course he had to adapt.”
Pelzer said he “was very raw but showed a lot of bright things” on his debut. “That was very impressive but we had to work with him a lot after to get him in the right frame,” he said.
“He has a lot of talent. When he joined us it was about channeling all his qualities because he has to stay focused on his work,” continued the German. “If he is able to focus there and put all his efforts into his work he is able to achieve a very high ceiling.”
Duran scored one goal in the first half of the season – but netted seven more in the second half of the campaign and ended as the club’s top goalscorer with eight goals in 28 games.
And then Aston Villa came in and signed him despite competition from other clubs.
“Villa were the ones who shifted up to sixth gear to make the deal happen,” said Pelzer. “They wanted him and were very serious and put all the efforts in to make it happen.”
Al-Nassr, one of the top clubs in Saudi Arabia, has made a major signing by bringing in Colombian midfielder Jhon Duran. The journey of Duran from Colombia to the Middle East has been quite remarkable, as he has traveled through the MLS and the Premier League to reach this point.Duran started his professional career in Colombia, where he showcased his talent and caught the eye of scouts from the MLS. He made the move to the United States and played for several clubs in the MLS, impressing fans and pundits with his skill and work ethic.
After a successful stint in the MLS, Duran received an offer to play in the Premier League, one of the most prestigious leagues in the world. He seized the opportunity and made a name for himself on the international stage, earning the admiration of fans and fellow players alike.
Now, Duran has taken the next step in his career by joining Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. The club has high hopes for him and believes that his experience in the MLS and the Premier League will help them achieve success in domestic and international competitions.
Duran’s journey from Colombia to Saudi Arabia is a testament to his dedication, hard work, and talent. We look forward to seeing him shine on the pitch for Al-Nassr and continue to make his mark in the world of football.

Jhon Duran plotting 600-MILE commute to avoid living in Saudi Arabia hours after signing £320k a week Al-Nassr contract
JHON DURAN is planning a 600-mile commute from Bahrain to his new Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr.
The Colombia striker completed a £70million move from Aston Villa at the end of last week — but has told Al-Nassr he wants to live in Bahrain.

Al-Ettifaq’s Dammam training ground is an hour’s drive from Bahrain — but Al-Nassr is on the outskirts of Riyadh and more than 300 miles away.
A scheduled flight from Bahrain International Airport to the capital Riyadh takes one hour and 20 minutes, so Duran will have to get used to a gruelling travel schedule.
The 21-year-old’s decision has been partly influenced by confusion over whether he would be permitted to live with his girlfriend in Saudi Arabia.
Under Islamic law co-habitation by unmarried couples is discouraged — and private landlords often demand proof of marriage before agreeing to rent out property.
In practice, the law is not always enforced, however.
Cristiano Ronaldo lives with girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez in a luxury compound in Saudi’s capital.
But Duran will be more than able to afford the crazy commute.

The striker, who only signed a new contract with Villa last October, is set to earn a whopping TAX-FREE yearly salary of £16.7million.
That equates to a staggering £1.4m per month, £321,000 per week, £46,000 per day and £1900 an hour.
Aston Villa hothead Jhon Duran rages as he’s subbed moments after scoring and kicks back of team-mate’s chairThe now former Villa striker now also earns £31 a minute and 52 pence per second.
He has been given the No 9 shirt at Al-Nassr, which is the same number he wore for Villa.
Duran joined Villa from MLS side Chicago Fire in January 2023 for a fee of £18m.
In just October 2024, Duran signed a new deal with Villa, which was set to keep him at the club until 2030.
He leaves Villa Park having scored 20 goals in 78 appearances for Unai Emery‘s side.
Villa confirmed Duran’s departure in a brief statement thanking him for his efforts during his time in the Midlands.
It read: “Aston Villa can confirm that Jhon Durán has joined Al-Nassr for an undisclosed fee.
“The striker moves to Saudi Arabia having scored 12 goals for Villa this term, including the winner against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
“Everyone at Aston Villa would like to wish Jhon all the best in the next step of his professional career.”
His exit might free up funds for Villa to sign Marcus Rashford permanently in the near future.
The Man Utd academy graduate, who has been exiled by Ruben Amorim, is reportedly on the brink of signing a six-month loan with Emery’s side.
Duran could make his Al-Nassr debut next Friday when they welcome Al Feiha to Al-Awwal Park.
His move came as a surprise after establishing himself as the most lethal sub in the Prem this season.
The Colombian has developed a reputation for being a game-changer for Unai Emery’s men.
Since his debut in January 2023, Duran scored more goals as a substitute than any other Premier League player.
Despite his impressive form, he has found first-team starts hard to come by throughout the campaign, with Emery often preferring Ollie Watkins, who Arsenal saw a bid rejected for this week, as the lone striker in his side.
In a surprising turn of events, it has been revealed that footballer Jhon Duran is reportedly plotting a 600-mile commute to avoid living in Saudi Arabia just hours after signing a lucrative £320k a week contract with Al-Nassr.The Colombian striker, known for his goal-scoring prowess, is said to be less than thrilled about the prospect of relocating to the Middle Eastern country and is exploring extreme measures to avoid living there.
Sources close to Duran have suggested that he is considering commuting from a nearby country, possibly Dubai, on a regular basis in order to fulfill his contractual obligations with Al-Nassr while maintaining a lifestyle more to his liking.
While this news may come as a shock to fans and club officials alike, it serves as a reminder of the lengths some athletes are willing to go to in order to maintain their preferred living arrangements. Only time will tell if Duran’s unconventional plan will come to fruition, but one thing is for certain – this is a story that will continue to captivate and intrigue football fans around the world.

Jhon Durán completes move to Al Nassr from Aston Villa
Jhon Durán has completed his transfer from Aston Villa to Al Nassr as the Saudi Pro League side bolstered their forward line for the second half of the season.
Durán’s form at Villa had seen him garner considerable attention from clubs in Europe and beyond, and the signing is seen as a coup for Stefano Pioli’s team, who already boast Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mané among their ranks.
The 21-year-old has scored 12 goals in 29 games this season for Villa, including memorable long-range strikes against Everton in the Premier League and Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Durán joined the midlands club from Chicago Fire for £18m ($22.3m) in January 2023 but has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Villa Park as Ollie Watkins‘ presence in the forward line kept him out of the team on a regular basis.
Wakins has also been linked with a move away from Villa in January but the Colombia international’s exit means that Watkins is likely to stay with Unai Emery’s team, with sources telling ESPN on Wednesday that the club had rejected a bid from Arsenal for his services.
Durán was an unused substitute in Villa’s Champions League win over Celtic on Wednesday which secured their eighth-place finish and a spot in the round of 16.
“Everyone at Aston Villa would like to wish Jhon all the best in the next step of his professional career,” Villa said in a statement.
Meanwhile, sources have told ESPN that Villa are interested in signing Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford before the transfer deadline.
Al Nassr have struggled to compete at the highest level in the Saudi Pro League this season, sitting fourth in the table and eight points off top despite the exploits of Ronaldo, who has scored a division-high 14 goals in 17 games.
Jhon Durán, the talented midfielder, has completed his move to Al Nassr from Aston Villa. The transfer was confirmed today, after weeks of negotiations between the two clubs.Durán, who has been a key player for Aston Villa in recent seasons, expressed his excitement about the move, stating that he is looking forward to the new challenge and is eager to contribute to Al Nassr’s success.
The 26-year-old Colombian has impressed fans and critics alike with his skillful playmaking abilities and his eye for goal. His addition to the Al Nassr squad is expected to bolster their midfield and provide a creative spark to the team.
Fans of both clubs are eagerly anticipating Durán’s debut for Al Nassr and are hopeful that he will make a significant impact on the team’s performance in the upcoming season. We wish Jhon Durán all the best in his new adventure with Al Nassr!

Jhon Duran close to completing Al-Nassr move from Aston Villa
Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran is close to completing a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, sources have confirmed to BBC Sport.
A fee has been agreed between the two clubs and Duran – who was on the bench for Villa’s 4-2 win over Celtic on Wednesday night – was undergoing a medical on Thursday.
A price of £65m for the 21-year-old Colombian has been reported, although not verified by BBC Sport.
A senior Saudi Pro League source said Duran will fly to Saudi Arabia on Saturday if the medical goes well.
Sources told BBC Sport that Duran was saying his goodbyes to staff and colleagues at Villa Park on Wednesday night after the deal progressed.
A Saudi delegation has been stationed in London this week negotiating the deal.
Aston Villa have been approached for comment.
Villa manager Unai Emery was asked post-match on Wednesday about the future of Duran as well as striker Ollie Watkins, amid a rejected bid from Arsenal.
On Duran, Emery said: “If he is leaving it’s because he wants [to]. I told you last week I wanted him here.
“We are different people, different objectives.
“The club is working and we have to be intelligent in the market.
“Our objective here is to keep our structure because we want to keep the level high, and maybe we have to sell some players – and I don’t know exactly until everything is done whether or not Jhon Duran is leaving – but if he does, it’ll be good news for us because it’s good money.”
Duran joined Villa from Chicago Fire for £18m in January 2023 but is now expected to leave in a deal reportedly worth more than £64.4m plus add-ons.
Al-Nassr are fourth in the Saudi Pro League table.
According to recent reports, Jhon Duran is edging closer to completing a move from Aston Villa to Al-Nassr. The Colombian midfielder has been in talks with the Saudi Arabian club for some time now, and it seems like a deal is finally coming to fruition.Duran has been a key player for Aston Villa in recent years, but it appears that he is ready for a new challenge. Al-Nassr are said to be offering a lucrative deal to the midfielder, which has persuaded him to make the move.
Although nothing has been officially confirmed yet, sources close to the negotiations have indicated that the deal is in its final stages. Fans of both clubs will be eagerly awaiting an official announcement in the coming days.
Stay tuned for more updates on Jhon Duran’s potential move to Al-Nassr from Aston Villa.

Jhon Duran transfer: Al Nassr confident of deal worth over £64m to sign Aston Villa striker | Football News
Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran has completed a medical with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr ahead of a £64m move.
The 21-year-old, who was an unused substitute in Villa’s 4-2 home win over Celtic in the Champions League on Wednesday, will now fly to Saudi Arabia to join a side headed by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Duran’s move comes as it also emerged Villa have rejected a bid from Arsenal for striker Ollie Watkins.
Al Nassr are understood to be paying just over £64m (€77m) plus bonuses for the striker, who was signed for around £15m from MLS side Chicago Fire FC two years ago.
The Saudi club have also seen a bid worth £54m for Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma rejected.
This is all part of a new Saudi strategy to focus on singing young, developing players. They do not want to be regarded as a retirement home for ageing superstars.
Emery said of Duran in his post-match press conference: “The club is working, we have to be competitive, of course we are developing players and increasing our objective, increasing our target, playing Champions League.
“Of course, we in the eyes of another strong team, strong countries like Saudi Arabia. It is something as well I can feel proud of because [the players] are improving. We have players who are of interest to other clubs and paying good money to us.
“But of course our objective is to keep our structure on the sport side because we want to keep our level that we are at and to keep it for a long time is hard.
“[To answer the question], I don’t know exactly until everything is done.
“If he is leaving it is because it is a good deal for us. Because we have developed a young player in two years. It is not only club, it [has to work for] club, player and team.
“I don’t know if he is going to leave.”
The Spaniard added: “With Jhon Duran, you know more or less everything we are speaking here. He is a fantastic young player, fantastic potential. I was so close with him, trying to work with him in his development.
“But the player has the objective, sometimes they are impassioned. If they are leaving it is because they are doing another way in their career.”
Questioned on whether Duran has asked to leave the club, Emery replied: “If he is leaving, of course it is because he has agreed.
“I told you last week, I wanted him here. After West Ham, I told you I wanted him here. But what does he want?”
Earlier this month, West Ham had a £57m bid turned down for Duran.
Al Nassr opt for Duran over Boniface
Sky Sports News reported on Wednesday morning that Al Nassr wanted to sign either Duran or Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface.
The Saudi Arabian club had held talks over both strikers but will only sign one of them and it appears they have settled on Duran despite also agreeing a £46m (€55m) deal for Boniface, who had undergone a medical.
Sky Germany reported on Wednesday night Boniface’s move to Al Nassr is off.
The 24-year-old was left out of Leverkusen’s squad on Wednesday for their 2-0 Champions League home win over Sparta Prague.
Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, said it is now unlikely that Boniface leaves.
Rolfes said: “Boniface will train with the team again tomorrow. He is still a Bayer 04 player.
“The events have not led to him being sold. With certain sums of money, economic considerations naturally always play a role.
“The current situation is that he will most likely stay. We are happy about that.”
Villa reject Arsenal’s bid for Watkins
Al Nassr’s move for Duran comes amid Villa rejecting a bid from Arsenal for striker Ollie Watkins, who has been Villa head coach Unai Emery’s preferred striker.
Arsenal are expected to return with an improved offer for the England international.
Villa’s position is that Watkins is not for sale, which makes it unlikely a deal will be done in this window.
Watkins, known to be an Arsenal fan, is the Premier League’s ninth-top goalscorer this season with 10 goals – including Villa’s equaliser at Arsenal earlier this month.
The 29-year-old has five goals in 18 games for England, including the winner in last season’s Euro 2024 semi-final victory against the Netherlands.

Breaking News: Al Nassr confident of securing a deal worth over £64m to sign Aston Villa striker Jhon DuranIn what could be a blockbuster transfer deal, Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr is reportedly in advanced talks to sign Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran for a fee exceeding £64m. The 27-year-old Colombian international has been a key player for Villa in recent seasons, but it appears that he could be on his way out of the club in the coming days.
Al Nassr, managed by former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino, are said to be confident of reaching an agreement with Villa for the transfer of Duran. The move would see the striker link up with the likes of former Barcelona forward Xavi Hernandez and ex-Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic at the Saudi outfit.
Duran has been a prolific goalscorer for Villa, netting 20 goals in all competitions last season. His departure would be a major blow for the Midlands club, but the lure of a lucrative move to Al Nassr could prove too tempting for the Colombian.
Stay tuned for further updates on this potential blockbuster transfer deal as negotiations continue between the two clubs. Could Jhon Duran be set for a sensational move to Saudi Arabia? Only time will tell. #JhonDuran #AlNassr #AstonVilla #TransferNews #FootballTransfer
