  • An ailing Pope Francis – and the vultures circling in the Vatican

An unholy war is brewing in the Catholic Church, said Paola Totaro in The Australian (Sydney). While “Conclave”, a film about the “murky web of curial politics”, is getting Oscar-season buzz, in the real-world Vatican “a series of events has unfolded behind the Leonine Walls in past months that are just as intriguing”. With only one lung, the fragile 88-year-old Pope Francis sparks alarm with “every cough or hospital admission”. Around him, the vultures circle – devising strategies to ensure their preferred candidate becomes the next leader of the Catholic Church and its 1.4 billion faithful.

On one side are Francis’s progressives, who want to modernise the Church; on the other, conservative traditionalists who fear “a shift too far on issues of capitalism, homosexuality, abortion and the role of women“. This week, an unabashed Pope Francis appointed an Italian nun, Sister Raffaella Petrini, to run the Vatican City State – the first time a woman has ever been given the role. Women make better managers than men, said the Pope, adding: “Women have been running things since the Garden of Eden.”

It has been a challenging time for Pope Francis as he battles health issues, with reports of fatigue and difficulty walking. As the leader of the Catholic Church, his well-being is of utmost importance not just to the faithful, but also to those within the Vatican.

However, amidst this period of vulnerability, there are vultures circling in the Vatican. Some are speculating about a power vacuum and potential successors, while others are questioning the Pope’s ability to lead effectively in his current state.

It is crucial during this time of uncertainty and concern that we remember the importance of compassion and support for Pope Francis. Let us not succumb to the temptation of gossip and speculation, but instead focus on sending prayers and well wishes for his recovery.

The Catholic Church has weathered many storms throughout its history, and it is in times like these that the strength of faith and unity is tested. Let us stand in solidarity with Pope Francis and trust in the guidance of the Holy Spirit to navigate through these challenging times.

  • Pope Francis stumbles and nearly falls after walking stick handle snaps

Pope Francis nearly tumbled to the Vatican floor Saturday, when the handle of his walking stick snapped.

But the 88-year-old was able to catch himself, stumbling briefly as he entered the auditorium to address an audience.

After the slip, a pair of aides rushed to the pontiff’s side, and helped him into his chair on stage.

“Viva il Papa,” shouted a member of the crowd, eliciting applause from the others gathered to hear him speak.

Pope Francis has notoriously bad knees, which have caused him to fall twice recently.

He has used wheelchairs and walking sticks to get around, while also battling chronic health problems, including long bouts of bronchitis.

The pope hurt his arm earlier this month in a fall. While he didn’t fracture it, doctors nevertheless had him wear a sling.

And back on Dec. 7, 2024, Francis fell in his bedroom, and smacked his chin on a nightstand, leaving him with some visible bruising.

    With Post wires.

Pope Francis had a scare during a recent public appearance when his walking stick handle snapped, causing him to stumble and nearly fall. The incident occurred as the Pope was greeting a crowd of well-wishers, highlighting the importance of safety precautions even for the most prominent figures. Thankfully, Pope Francis was able to regain his balance and continue with his duties, showing resilience and grace in the face of adversity. Let’s all keep the Pope in our thoughts and wish him well as he carries out his important work.

  • Pope Francis stumbles walking into Jubilee audience at Vatican

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis tripped while entering the Vatican auditorium for an audience Saturday after the handle of his walking stick snapped, but he avoided falling.

The 88-year-old pope often has to use a wheelchair or a cane because of bad knees and has fallen twice in the past two months.

After Saturday’s slight stumble, two aides helped him to his chair on the stage and the audience proceeded without incident. After he recovered someone in the audience shouted “Viva il Papa” and the audience applauded.

Earlier in January, Francis fell and hurt his right arm. It wasn’t broken, but a sling was put on as a precaution.

On Dec. 7, the pope whacked his chin on his nightstand in an apparent fall that resulted in a bad bruise.

The pontiff has long battled health problems including long bouts of bronchitis. He uses a walker or cane when moving around his apartment in the Vatican’s Santa Marta hotel.

Speculation about Francis’ health is a constant in Vatican circles, especially after Pope Benedict XVI broke 600 years of tradition and resigned from the papacy in 2013. Benedict’s aides have attributed the decision to a nighttime fall that he suffered during a 2012 trip to Mexico, after which he determined he couldn’t keep up with the globe-trotting demands of the papacy.

Francis has said that he has no plans to resign anytime soon, even if Benedict “opened the door” to the possibility. In his autobiography “Hope” released this month, Francis said that he hadn’t considered resigning even when he had major intestinal surgery.

Pope Francis stumbled while walking into a Jubilee audience at the Vatican today, sparking concern among onlookers. The 84-year-old Pontiff appeared to lose his balance momentarily before regaining his composure and continuing on his way.

Despite the brief stumble, Pope Francis appeared to be in good spirits as he greeted attendees and delivered his message of peace and unity. The incident serves as a reminder of the Pope’s advancing age and the physical challenges that come with it.

Fans of the Pontiff took to social media to express their well wishes and support for Pope Francis, with many praising his resilience and dedication to his duties. The stumble serves as a humbling reminder that even those in positions of power and authority are not immune to moments of vulnerability.

As Pope Francis continues to carry out his duties as the leader of the Catholic Church, we can only hope that he remains in good health and spirits. Let us all keep him in our thoughts and prayers as he navigates the demands of his role with grace and humility.

  • Sodality of Christian Life dissolved by Pope Francis, apostolate confirms

The Sodality of Christian Life confirmed on Monday that Pope Francis has decided to dissolve the society of apostolic life without going into further details about how the process will be carried out.

The Sodalitium Christianae Vitae (SCV, by its Latin acronym) issued a statement following the news published on Saturday by Infovaticana, according to which Cardinal Gianfranco Ghirlanda supposedly announced the dissolution to its members gathered for the general assembly that is taking place in Aparecida, Brazil.

The general assembly began on Jan. 6 and will end Jan. 31. Ghirlanda is attending in his capacity as consultant for the process of revising the constitutions of the Sodalitium and is its delegate for formation, a task entrusted to him by the Vatican in 2019.

In its statement on Monday, the SCV said: “On Jan. 18 of this year, the website ‘Infovaticana’ published the news that the Holy Father had dissolved our society of apostolic life. The main information about what occurred was true, but it contained several inaccuracies.”

In its text, the Sodalitium does not indicate what the inaccuracies are but clarifies that the leak to the press of this “confidential” information did not come from Ghirlanda but from two members of the sodality who violated “the confidentiality of the case” and who have been expelled from the assembly.

“The assembly recognizes as its own only the news from its official communications; therefore, the assembly disassociates itself from all other news that has come out or may come out from the press related to the assembly, to the Sodalitium, to the Holy Father, in whom we trust and whom we obey, to Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu Farnós, and to Cardinal Gianfranco Ghirlanda, SJ,” the SCV stated.

According to Infovaticana, the decree of dissolution “refers to the immorality of the founder, Luis Fernando Figari, as an indication of the nonexistence of a founding charism, and therefore, the lack of ecclesial legitimacy for the permanence of the institution.”

Figari was expelled from the SCV by Pope Francis in August 2024. The Holy See had already sanctioned him in 2017 and banned him from having contact with any member of this society after it was proven that he committed sexual abuse and the abuse of power.

According to Infovaticano, the Vatican supposedly appointed Bertomeu, a member of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, as commissioner responsible for the dissolution process. The Spanish priest was part of the special mission that the pontiff sent to Peru in July 2023 to investigate the accusations against members of the Sodalitium.

The SCV was founded in Lima, Peru, in 1971 and currently is also present in Italy, the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Ecuador.

This story was first published by ACI Prensa, CNA’s Spanish-language news partner. It has been translated and adapted by CNA.

In a shocking turn of events, Pope Francis has officially dissolved the Sodality of Christian Life, a prominent apostolate within the Catholic Church. This decision has sent shockwaves throughout the Christian community, as the Sodality has long been known for its dedication to serving the Church and spreading the Gospel.

Despite the dissolution, members of the apostolate have confirmed that they will continue their mission of faith and service, even without the official recognition of the Church. In a statement released by the Sodality, they expressed their commitment to following Christ and living out their faith in their daily lives.

While the reasons behind Pope Francis’ decision to dissolve the Sodality remain unclear, members of the apostolate have vowed to remain faithful to their calling and continue to spread the message of Christ. As they navigate this uncertain time, they ask for prayers and support from their fellow Christians.

The dissolution of the Sodality of Christian Life may be a setback, but the apostolate’s commitment to their faith and mission remains steadfast. They are determined to continue their work, despite this unexpected turn of events.

  • Pope Francis calls Trump’s plans of mass deportation of immigrants ‘a disgrace’

ROME (AP) — Pope Francis said Donald Trump’s plans to impose mass deportations of immigrants would be a “disgrace,” as he weighed in on the incoming U.S. president’s pledges nearly a decade after calling him “not Christian” for wanting to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border.

Francis made the comments during an appearance at an evening talk show, and then followed up Monday with an official telegram of congratulations to Trump on the day of his inauguration. Francis said he prayed that America would live up to its ideals of being a “land of opportunity and welcome for all.”

“It is my hope that under your leadership the American people will prosper and always strive to build a more just society, where there is no room for hatred, discrimination or exclusion,” he wrote in the telegram.

History’s first Latin American pope was asked Sunday night about the Trump administration pledges of deportations during an appearance on a popular Italian talk show, Che Tempo Che Fa.

“If true, this will be a disgrace, because it makes the poor wretches who have nothing pay the bill” for the problem, Francis said. “This won’t do! This is not the way to solve things. That’s not how things are resolved.”

Trump, who is being sworn in on Monday, made mass deportations a signature issue of his campaign and has promised a raft of first-day orders to remake immigration policy.

During his first campaign for the presidency, in 2016, Francis was asked about Trump’s plans to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Speaking after he celebrated Mass along the border, Francis famously said anyone who builds a wall to keep out migrants is “not Christian.”

Many U.S. bishops have firmly opposed Trump’s deportation plan, with the incoming archbishop of Washington D.C., Cardinal Robert McElroy, saying such policies were “incompatible with Catholic doctrine.” It was a reference to the Biblical call to “welcome the stranger.”

Another cardinal close to Francis, Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich, said the reports of mass deportations targeting the Chicago area “are not only profoundly disturbing but also wound us deeply.”

In a statement delivered from the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City on Sunday, Cupich said governments have the responsibility to protect borders and communities.

“But we also are committed to defending the rights of all people, and protecting their human dignity,” according to the text of his statement.

Francis, who grew up in Argentina in a family of Italian immigrants, has long prioritized the plight of migrants and called for governments to welcome, protect and integrate them, within their means. He has said the dignity and rights of migrants trump any national security concerns.

In a recent statement, Pope Francis condemned President Trump’s plans for mass deportation of immigrants, calling it “a disgrace” and urging world leaders to show compassion and respect for all individuals. The Pope emphasized the importance of upholding human dignity and treating migrants with kindness and understanding. He urged countries to work together to find humane and effective solutions to the challenges of immigration, rather than resorting to harsh and inhumane tactics. The Pope’s remarks serve as a powerful reminder of the need to prioritize compassion and solidarity in addressing the global migration crisis. #PopeFrancis #Trump #Immigration #Compassion #HumanDignity

  • Brooklyn priest Father Francis Mann to pray at inauguration after ‘unlikely’ friendship with President Trump

A priest in the Diocese of Brooklyn who has been asked to pray at the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump is describing the experience — which includes a personal friendship with the president — as “mind-boggling.”

Father Francis Mann is scheduled to deliver the closing benediction at Trump’s second inauguration in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 20.

The Brooklyn Diocese told CNA that Mann was unavailable for an interview. But in a Wednesday profile at the diocesan newspaper the Tablet, the priest described the distinction as an “indescribable honor.”

The retired diocesan priest, who was ordained in 1979, originally struck up what the Tablet called an “unlikely friendship” with Trump after he came across the gravesites of Trump’s parents in a Queens cemetery.

“It was slightly overgrown,” Mann told the Tablet. “I thought this shouldn’t be. This is a historic site. So, I went and bought a weed whacker and some decorations and fixed up the plot.” The priest then sent a photo of the graves to the president.

Several weeks later Trump personally called Mann to inquire about the photograph. Learning that the priest had done the work on his own volition, Trump said the two should “get together the next time he was in New York,” according to the Tablet.

After his loss in the 2020 election, Trump called Mann up and invited him to a meeting at Trump Tower in Manhattan. The priest described the once and future president as “the nicest, most down-to-earth guy.”

“There are no airs about him. He has a great sense of humor. He’s a regular guy,” Mann told the Tablet.

The president and the priest have continued to stay in touch and to meet up, including at Trump’s summer residence in New Jersey as well as a dinner at the president’s country club. Trump subsequently endorsed “The Wounded Butterfly,” a children’s book written by Mann.

Trump also sought Mann’s advice on winning the Catholic vote in the 2024 election. The president-elect handily won over Catholic voters in his successful November bid for the presidency.

The Tablet reported that Mann intends to make the Jan. 20 benediction “personal” and that he “will be asking for a blessing for his friend, the president of the United States, the new vice president, and the country they will lead.”

“It’s taken me longer than I thought to process having been chosen to be such a significant part of the inauguration’s moment in history,” Mann reflected.

Brooklyn priest Father Francis Mann has been invited to pray at the upcoming presidential inauguration following an ‘unlikely’ friendship with President Trump. The two men, who come from vastly different backgrounds and have differing views on many issues, have formed a strong bond over their shared faith and values.

Father Mann, known for his compassionate leadership and dedication to helping those in need, will offer a prayer for unity and peace at the inauguration ceremony. The announcement has taken many by surprise, but Father Mann sees this as an opportunity to bring people together and promote understanding and respect in a time of great division.

Despite the challenges and controversies surrounding the upcoming inauguration, Father Mann remains committed to his role as a spiritual leader and peacemaker. He hopes that his presence at the event will serve as a reminder of the power of faith and the importance of coming together as a community, even in the face of adversity.

As Father Mann prepares to take the stage alongside President Trump, he asks for the support and prayers of his parishioners and the wider community. Together, they can demonstrate the strength of unity and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of challenges and differences.

  • Ralph Macchio’s The Outsiders Character, Explained (& What The Actor Said About Working With Francis Ford Coppola)

The Outsiders was bursting with future star power, including Ralph Macchio, when it was released in 1983. Alongside Macchio, the Francis Ford Coppola-directed film starred a slew of major Hollywood actors including Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, and Diane Lane. The Outsiders is based on the seminal 1967 novel by S.E. Hinton, and follows two gangs of young people — the poor greasers and the more wealthy Socs — as they fight for dominance in Tulsa, Oklahoma during the 1960s.

The film was a box office success, earning over $25 million against a $10 million budget (via Box Office Mojo) and critical acclaim. In the years since its release, The Outsiders spawned both a 1990 sequel TV series and a Tony Award-winning 2023 Broadway musical. The 1983 movie’s impact also extends to its stars, as just one year after its release, Ralph Macchio would go on to play Daniel LaRusso in 1984’s The Karate Kid. This film would define his career, as Macchio went on to reprise his role in two Karate Kid sequels and Netflix’s Cobra Kai.

Ralph Macchio Played Johnny Cade In The Outsiders

Johnny Is The Greaser Who Says “Stay Gold, Ponyboy.”

Ralph Macchio plays Johnny Cade in The Outsiders. Johnny is a part of the Greaser subculture along with the protagonist, Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell). Early in the film, Johnny and Ponyboy get into a fist fight with the rival Socs gang. In the confrontation, Johnny fatally stabs a Socs member to death.

The rest of the film sees Johnny and Ponyboy on the run and later trying to clear their names as Johnny acted in self-defense. Johnny later shows his heroism when he saves a group of kids from a church fire, only to break his back in the process and succumb to his injuries. His dying words, “Stay gold, Ponyboy,” are The Outsiders most iconic quote.

25 Wild Details Behind The Making Of The Outsiders

The Outsiders launched the career of so many iconic young actors, but they went through a lot to make it to the big screen.

As Johnny, Macchio was able to hold his own in The Outsiders‘ cast of future A-listers because his performance was so authentic. Johnny’s anguish about his parents’ constant domestic abuse and his anxiety about clearing his name are clearly seen through Macchio’s performance. He handles the nuances of his character well and has an effective Oklahoma accent to boot. The role was vital to Macchio’s career, as it let Hollywood know that he could handle complex roles.

What Macchio Said About Working With Francis Ford Coppola

    Coppola Certainly Challenged Him

C Thomas Howell and Ralph Macchio looking nervous in The Outsiders

The actor has discussed working with The Outsiders director Francis Ford Coppola at length. In an interview with Us Weekly at the 2024 Director’s Guild Honors, Macchio said Coppla would throw him “curveballs” in order to challenge him. He says the acclaimed director wanted Macchio to turn his analytical brain off so the acting would feel organic. Of working with Coppola, Macchio said,

“[Coppola] kept telling me to do it again and to stop thinking. One time, he gave me a little rock and said, ‘Don’t look at this rock. Put it in your pocket, and during the scene, I want you to think about what color it is,’’’ he said. “And it actually helped because it took me out of over-analyzing.”

The Outsiders has stayed with Macchio throughout his career. In June 2024, he took his family to see The Outsiders Broadway musical. The musical opened in 2023 to critical acclaim and won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Macchio visited the cast and took a few photos, including a one-on-one with the Tony-nominated Sky Lakota-Lynch, the actor who plays Johnny in the musical rendition. While The Karate Kid made him famous, it’s clear that Ralph Macchio will always have a soft spot for the film that launched his career.

The Outsiders is Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s coming-of-age drama novel. Two teen gangs, the Socials and the Greasers find themselves at irreconcilable odds when one of the Social’s boys is killed in a brawl. Following the event, the Greasers head into hiding while some of them seek redemption for their past crimes.

  • Pope Francis injures arm after falling at the Vatican

    CNN
     —

Pope Francis has fallen over and injured his right arm but did not suffer any broken bones, the Vatican says.

In a statement, the Holy See press office said that due to a fall Thursday morning in the Casa Santa Marta, the pope’s residence, the 88-year-old pontiff “suffered a contusion to his right forearm, without fracture.”

The statement added that his arm has been “immobilized as a precautionary measure.”

Official pictures showed the pope wearing a cloth sling as he held meetings.

Despite the fall, Francis held five meetings on Thursday according to the Vatican, including with Alvaro Lario, the President of the International Fund of Agricultural Development, and priests from an Argentine college based in Rome.

On Wednesday, the pope led his general audience in the Vatican and seemed in good spirits, throwing a tennis ball to a dog during a circus performance.

The pope has suffered a number of health problems in recent years and this is the second fall he has had in a matter of weeks. In early December, he appeared with a large bruise on his chin after falling and hitting his bedside table during the night.

Since 2022, the pope has made use of a wheelchair due to mobility problems caused by pain in his knee. In his recently published autobiography “Hope”, Francis said that he is in good health and ruled out resigning from his position, but said that “the reality is, quite simply, that I am old.”

He said it was “embarrassing at first to have to use a wheelchair, but old age never arrives by itself, and it must be accepted for what it is.”

He added: “the Church is governed using the head and the heart, not the legs. I do physiotherapy twice a week, I use a walking stick, do as many steps as I can, and I carry on.”

The pope will be appearing on Italian talk show “Che Tempo Che Fa” this Sunday at 07.30 CET on Nove, a channel owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s corporate parent.
