  • Democrat Jamie Raskin’s Past Comments About Preemptive Pardons Come Back to Haunt Him

Republicans are taking on the recipients of President Joe Biden’s preemptive pardons, issued on the same day he will leave office. Among those targeted is Rep. Jamie Raskin, who was part of the House committee that investigated President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

In that context, Republicans in the House Oversight Committee brought back a clip from Raskin saying that “the seeking of pardons is powerful demonstration of the consciousness of guilt, or at least the consciousness that you may be in trouble.” It is unclear whether Raskin actively sought a pardon from Biden.

Biden himself had said in 2020 that the concept of preemptive pardons “concerned” him “in terms of what kind of precedent sets and how the rest of the world looks at us as a nation of laws and justice. You’re not going to see in our administration that kind of approach to pardons,” he told CNN back then.

The outgoing president justified his decision by saying that the recipients have “been subjected to ongoing threats and intimidation for faithfully discharging their duties.”

“I believe in the rule of law, and I am optimistic that the strength of our legal institutions will ultimately prevail over politics. But these are exceptional circumstances, and I cannot in good conscience do nothing. Baseless and politically motivated investigations wreak havoc on the lives, safety, and financial security of targeted individuals and their families. Even when individuals have done nothing wrong—and in fact have done the right thing—and will ultimately be exonerated, the mere fact of being investigated or prosecuted can irreparably damage reputations and finances,” Biden added during a passage of his statement.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former head of the NIH, thanked Biden for the preemptive pardon but emphasized that he has not committed any crimes.

“I really truly appreciate the action President Biden has taken today on my behalf. Let me be perfectly clear, Jon, I have committed no crime, you know that, and there are no possible grounds for any allegation or threat of criminal investigation or prosecution of me,” Fauci told ABC News journalist Jonathan Karl.

He went on to say that he is grateful because the chance that he would indeed be investigated under the Trump administration would have created “immeasurable and intolerable distress on me and my family.”

In a shocking turn of events, Democrat Jamie Raskin’s past comments about preemptive pardons have come back to haunt him. Raskin, who has been a vocal critic of President Trump’s use of pardons, is now facing scrutiny for his own remarks on the subject.

In a 2016 interview, Raskin expressed support for the idea of preemptive pardons, stating that they could be a useful tool for preventing political prosecutions. However, now that Raskin’s own actions are under scrutiny, his past comments are being used against him by his political opponents.

Critics are accusing Raskin of hypocrisy, pointing out that he is now singing a different tune when it comes to preemptive pardons. Some are calling for Raskin to resign or face consequences for his previous statements.

Raskin has not yet responded to the controversy, but it remains to be seen how he will address the issue moving forward. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Donyell Malen transfer: New Aston Villa forward could come back to haunt former side Arsenal after £21m transfer | Football News

Just days after completing his £21m switch from Borussia Dortmund to Aston Villa, Donyell Malen could be in line to make his Premier League debut against his former club Arsenal, live on Sky Sports.

With Jaden Philogene’s return to Villa Park lasting just six months and Leon Bailey failing to recapture his scintillating form from last season – which saw him net 10 goals and add nine assists in the top-flight – it was clear Unai Emery needed reinforcements.

Villa’s interest in Malen has been long standing but just over two weeks into the winter window, they had their man.

Malen now returns to England eight years after leaving the Arsenal academy to join PSV Eindhoven in 2017 – and might just have a point to prove when the two sides meet on Saturday Night Football.

    Saturday 18th January 5:00pm

    Kick off 5:30pm

Will Malen have a point to prove?

After idolising Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp throughout his development, joining Arsenal in 2015 was a dream come true for Malen.

However, his exit from the club two years later – after scoring 27 goals in 67 appearances for the academy teams – soured his time at the Emirates Stadium.

The forward, who left without making a first-team appearance, was reportedly referred to as “too fat” by Andries Jonker, then head of youth development, prior to his exit.

Reflecting on his time in north London after securing a move to PSV for £540,000, he told Dutch media: “I heard him say that I came in too fat.

“That surprised me. They had already been working at Arsenal for two months when I arrived. Then of course you are not immediately at the same level.

“I was not yet match fit, but too fat? No. It was going well in England, but I still wanted to leave Arsenal because I had the opportunity to sign for PSV. I took that chance.”

Seven years later and with his price tag now skyrocketing to just under 40 times what Arsenal received, Malen could be set to haunt his former side in their quest to close the four-point gap to Liverpool in the title race.

    Arsenal could use Malen’s talents

Football works in mysterious ways and Malen being back on familiar turf and possibly making his debut against his former club – who arguably need someone of his profile – is the latest twist in the Premier League tale.

The 25-year-old is well versed in playing across all positions in a front three and with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Ethan Nwaneri all injured, and Raheem Sterling struggling, his talents seem perfectly fit to address the current issues at the Gunners.

While not prolific in the goal-scoring department with 92 goals to his name across 237 senior appearances in his club career, the versatile forward offers another prong to any attack, as well as experience on the Champions League and international stage.

For Villa, the new signing will take pressure off Bailey on the right, provide added cover for Jacob Ramsey on the left and can even operate as the second striker that Emery so often deploys in the form of Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans or captain John McGinn.

    Emery on Malen’s versatility

“He is usually playing as a number seven, sometimes as an number 11 on the side, sometimes can play as a number 10.

“He is always close to the attacking third, close to the opponent’s box and scores goals and assists.

“We need a player like him to try and threaten the opponent.”

    Malen’s versatility by numbers

Predominantly used in a partnership up-front while at PSV, Malen earned himself a £25m move to Dortmund in 2021 after showcasing his potential with 46 goals in 76 outings when deployed as a forward.

Having a dominant figure like Erling Haaland to contend with, and Serhou Guirassy since then, meant the Netherlands international was regularly used out wide but continued to show his worth by contributing in the final third and creating for his team-mates.

His final tally after leaving the Westfalenstadion came in at a modest 39 goals and 20 assists but with Emery’s track record of getting the best out of players and using them in unorthodox ways, there is enough evidence to suggest his time in the Second City could be fruitful.

Two opposite ends of the striker spectrum

While Malen addresses several issues for Villa and adds crucial depth, the problems for Arsenal only continue to grow.

Rocked by the confirmation that forward Jesus had suffered an ACL injury during the FA Cup defeat to Manchester United, Mikel Arteta has been left with only Kai Havertz to rely on in the forward areas.

Sky Sports News understands the Gunners are actively searching for reinforcements in the area but heading into this fixture, the two sides will be at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to strikers.

While Arsenal hope for Havertz to rediscover his finest form in-front of goal as their lone option, Villa are quite the opposite – even before the addition of Malen – as Emery aims to spread sufficient minutes to both Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran.

Duran returned to the match-day squad against Everton after serving his two-match suspension following the red card against Newcastle – and after netting four goals in his last four outings prior to the time on the sidelines, will likely want his starting role back.

Meanwhile, Watkins, who provided 13 assists to go alongside his 19 goals in the league last season, still currently holds top spot in the goal-scoring department for Villa with nine. Which is two more than his counter-part has managed in just four league starts.

Having two top forwards vying for the starting role is an unfamiliar problem to have in modern football – and it is one Arsenal likely envy.

Donyell Malen transfer: New Aston Villa forward could come back to haunt former side Arsenal after £21m transfer | Football News

Aston Villa’s latest signing, Donyell Malen, has made a big move from PSV Eindhoven to the Premier League in a £21m deal. The Dutch forward has caught the eye of many top clubs with his impressive performances in the Eredivisie, and now he is set to make his mark in the English top-flight.

However, it’s not just Villa fans who should be excited about Malen’s arrival. Arsenal fans should also take note, as the 22-year-old could potentially come back to haunt his former side. Malen was part of the Gunners’ youth academy before making the move to PSV in 2017.

With his pace, skill, and eye for goal, Malen has the potential to be a thorn in the side of Arsenal’s defense when Villa face them in the upcoming season. His ability to create chances and score goals could prove to be a real headache for the Gunners, who may regret letting him go.

Arsenal will be hoping that Malen doesn’t come back to haunt them, but Villa fans will be delighted to have such a talented forward in their ranks. It promises to be an exciting season ahead, with Malen set to make a big impact in the Premier League. Watch this space!

Roster Choices Haunt Canada in Shocking WJC Loss

The entire bench for Canada was noticeably bewildered following their 3-2 shootout loss to Latvia at the 2025 World Junior Championship. Canada’s second group stage game was a shocking wake-up call for one of the global hockey powerhouses. Coming off a fifth-place finish at last year’s event, all of Hockey Canada has been vocal about how this year’s tournament is about redemption and reclaiming the gold medal.

A loss to the Latvian squad has made one thing clear for Canada: their roster is not constructed to win at this event. Lots of chatter has been had around Hockey Canada’s selection camp, with notable names being left off the final roster.

The most glaring omission was forward Beckett Sennecke and 2025 draft-eligible winger Michael Misa. Sennecke is a big, physical winger prospect for the Anaheim Ducks who is excellent in his own offensive end and can be a bit of a pest in the defensive end. He was a late addition to Canada’s selection camp, which definitely hurt his chances, but he would be the perfect addition to this team.

Where he would’ve helped the most is on the power play. To Canada’s credit, they managed to net a huge goal with the man advantage against Latvia, but they finished the game converting on just that one power play opportunity. Sennecke has the vision, shooting ability and net front skills that could have made the difference against Latvia and made an impact throughout the tournament.

Misa has been one of the best players in the entire CHL this season, and he’s making his own case to be the top pick at the 2025 NHL Draft. He’s currently averaging a goal a game through 30 contests to go with 61 points this season. He has an undeniable offensive skillset, but he’s also eager to engage physically on the ice. His game perfectly aligns with Canada’s mission of being tougher and stronger in all three areas of the game, but he never even received an invite to the selection camp.

Canada’s power play, as currently constructed, is costing them goals and wins. They turned to Tanner Howe, a pesky forward in his own right, as the net front option and he’s been ineffective in the role through two games. Having Sennecke in that role or Misa’s playmaking instead feels like a slam dunk decision in hindsight.

Defense has been just as big a concern for Canada. The power play was set to be quarterbacked by 2025-draft eligible prospect Matthew Schaefer. He looked at home in the role against Finland, but an upper-body injury could rob Canada of their top offensive defenseman for the rest of the tournament.

Now, there is no one to fill his role and be as productive. Oliver Bonk is not a top power play defenseman, but Canada trotted him out first for all four of their power play chances against Latvia.

Would having one of Zayn Parekh or Carter Yakemchuk fix that issue for Canada? The two were the most notable defensive omissions, but Canada would welcome both after seeing the consequences of lacking a No. 1 defenseman. Parekh and Yakemchuk provide similar skillsets to Bonk, Schaefer and Sam Dickinson, but it’s clear that the trio Canada chose was not its best three possible choices.

Canada’s heartbreaking loss in the World Junior Championship has left fans and analysts alike scratching their heads over the roster choices made by the coaching staff.

Despite being favored to win the tournament, Canada fell to the Czech Republic in a stunning upset that has left many questioning the decision-making behind the team’s lineup.

Some have pointed to the exclusion of top prospects in favor of more experienced players as a major factor in Canada’s defeat. Others have criticized the lack of chemistry and cohesion among the players, suggesting that the roster selections may have been to blame.

Whatever the reason, one thing is clear: Canada’s loss in the WJC has left a bitter taste in the mouths of fans and players alike. It’s a reminder that even the most talented teams can falter if the right choices aren’t made when it comes to selecting the roster.

As Canada looks to bounce back from this disappointing defeat, it’s clear that the coaching staff will need to reevaluate their roster choices and make sure they have the best possible lineup on the ice for future competitions. Only time will tell if this shocking loss will serve as a wake-up call for Team Canada.
