Why are flags half mast today?
Biden also announced that he appointed Jan. 9, 2025, as National Day of Mourning throughout the United States.
WASHINGTON — On Saturday, observances began in honor of the late former President Jimmy Carter, who died at the age of 100 on Dec. 29, 2024.
The nation’s 39th president will be honored in a series of events and tributes both across the state and the country as Georgia, the nation, and the world pause to remember the life and legacy of Carter. It will culminate in a national funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
Why are flags at half mast today?
In the wake of former President Jimmy Carter’s death, President Joe Biden ordered all American flags be flown at half-mast across the country for the next 30 days.
Biden proclaimed that flags would be displayed at half-staff as an expression of sorrow at the White House, all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the federal government in Washington D.C. and throughout the U.S. and its territories.
That means that flags will be flown at half-staff during President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.
“I also direct that, for the same length of time, the representatives of the United States in foreign countries shall make similar arrangements for the display of the flag at half staff over their embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations,” Biden announced.
Biden also announced that he appointed Jan. 9, 2025, as the National Day of Mourning throughout the United States.
“I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr. I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance,” Biden said in a statement.
Death of Jimmy Carter
Former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, whose post-presidential work as a humanitarian set a modern standard for the kind of legacy presidents can craft after their time in the White House, died at 100 years old.
“Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” the Carter Center announced Sunday in a social media post.
Jimmy Carter’s son, Chip Carter, said in a statement that his father was a “hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love.”
“My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs,” Chip Carter said.
The Carter Center said public observances will be held in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private internment in Plains. A final schedule is still being formalized and will be released at this link, the Carter Center said.
The public is encouraged to visit the Carter Center’s official tribute website for President Carter, where an online condolence book as well as materials commemorating his life are available. In lieu of flowers, President Carter’s family is asking for donations to be made to The Carter Center, 453 John Lewis Freedom Parkway NE, Atlanta, GA, 30307.
Turning 100 on Oct. 1, 2024, President Carter reached a milestone as the longest-living U.S. president that no other person to hold the title has reached. He is the only president from Georgia.

Systemic Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (SMCI) is a rare and complex disorder that affects the body’s mast cells, which are a type of white blood cell that plays a role in the immune system. When mast cells are activated, they release chemicals such as histamine and other mediators that can cause a wide range of symptoms throughout the body.Understanding the symptoms of SMCI is crucial in order to properly diagnose and treat the condition. Some of the most common symptoms of SMCI include:
– Flushing or redness of the skin
– Itching or hives
– Abdominal pain or cramping
– Diarrhea or nausea
– Fatigue or weakness
– Headaches
– Difficulty breathing or wheezing
– Rapid heart rate
– Low blood pressure
These symptoms can vary in severity and may come and go over time. In some cases, they can be triggered by certain foods, medications, or environmental factors.
Diagnosing SMCI can be challenging, as the symptoms can mimic those of other conditions such as allergies, asthma, or autoimmune disorders. A thorough medical history, physical examination, and blood tests may be necessary to confirm a diagnosis of SMCI.
Once diagnosed, treatment for SMCI typically involves a combination of medications and lifestyle changes to help manage symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Medications such as antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, and corticosteroids may be prescribed to help control symptoms. In more severe cases, medications such as epinephrine may be needed to treat life-threatening reactions.
In addition to medication, lifestyle changes such as avoiding triggers, following a healthy diet, and managing stress can also help manage symptoms of SMCI. It is important for individuals with SMCI to work closely with their healthcare provider to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that is tailored to their specific needs.
In conclusion, understanding the symptoms and treatment of Systemic Mast Cell Activation Syndrome is essential for individuals with this rare disorder. By working closely with healthcare providers and making necessary lifestyle changes, individuals with SMCI can effectively manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
