    In what is a fitting final between the two most impressive players at the ATP Montpellier event this week, Felix Auger-Aliassime will take on Aleksandar Kovacevic for the Open Occitanie crown.     This is a match that Auger-Aliassime should win. The Canadian, a force to be reckoned with indoors, has played some excellent tennis this week – beating Arthur Cazaux, Bu Yunchaokete and Jesper de Jong to reach the final, all without dropping a set. He is also significantly more experienced than his opponent, despite being two years younger. Indeed, he will be bidding for his seventh title whilst Kovacevic will be playing in his first final.

    That said, Kovacevic will doubtless be full of confidence. The American started his week in the qualifying, beating Robin Bertrand and Pablo Carreno Busta to reach the main draw where he has gone from strength-to-strength. He beat sixth seed David Goffin in the first round, Italy’s Mattia Bellucci in the second, fourth seed Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals and top seed Andrey Rublev in the last four. Goffin is the only man to take a set off him so far this week.

    That said, Auger-Aliassime probably represents a step up in the quality of opposition, particularly in these conditions. The second seed’s heavy forehand might also trouble Kovacevic’s single-hander if he can get it firing down-the-line. Kovacevic certainly struggled in their only previous meeting, which Auger-Aliassime won at a canter last year in Cincinnati. This should be a closer contest and may go the distance, but Auger-Aliassime should once again have the edge.

  • Auger-Aliassime Advances to Montpellier Finals; Mertens Marches into Singapore Finals

    Saturday’s action at the Open Occitanie in Montpellier, France featured No. 2 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime reach the finals, defeating Jesper de Jong 6-4, 7-6(4).

    Top seed Anna Kalinskaya was forced to retire from her semifinal encounter at the Singapore Tennis Open on Saturday in Singapore, stopping her match at 6-7(2), 0-1 to Ann Li from the United States.

    Sustaining an injury to her right thigh, Kalinskaya was forced end the contest and award her opponent the victory.

    Li, who owns one career title, will next face No. 2 seed Elise Mertens in Sunday’s final. Mertens ousted No. 4 seed Xinyu Wang 6-3, 6-4 in comfortable fashion.

    Mertens, who is a veteran on Tour, will look to win her ninth title on Sunday.

    Upper Austria Ladies Linz—Linz, Austria

    No. 5 seed Dayana Yastremska raced into the finals of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz event in Austria on Saturday, defeating No. 8 seed Clara Tauson 6-1, 6-4.

    Needing one hour and 48 minutes to seal her victory, Yastremska hit six aces, won 73 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on three occasions.

    The Ukrainian will next face No. 4 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, who upset top seed Karolina Muchova 6-0, 6-4.

    Alexandrova, also a Tour veteran, will be looking to claim her fifth career title on Sunday.

    MONTPELLIER, France — Montreal’s Félix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the semifinals of the Open Occitanie tennis tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over China’s Bu Yunchaokete on Friday.

    Auger-Aliassime, the second seed in Montpellier, reached the semifinals of the ATP 250 indoor hardcourt event for the second straight year.

    He joined Jannik Sinner (33) and Carlos Alcaraz (31) as the only players born since 2000 to reach 30 tour-level semifinals.

    Auger-Aliassime converted 86 per cent of first service points and fired 11 aces to pick up his 51st career indoor hardcourt win.

    The 24-year-old Canadian, who won his sixth ATP Tour title at the Adelaide International earlier this month, improved to 8-2 this season.

    Auger-Aliassime will next face Jesper de Jong of the Netherlands in Saturday’s semifinals.

    “My game is more disciplined,” Auger-Aliassime said of his success this year. “I feel like last year I had some brilliant shots but also moments where I made a lot of mistakes. But now, two straight-sets wins, (I am)] more solid and I am happy with that because that’s the goal. Hopefully, I go one more step and get to the finals on Sunday.”

    Felix Auger-Aliassime is reigniting his indoor form this week at the Open Occitanie in Montpellier, where he is into his second ATP Tour final of 2025.

    The second seed delivered a clinical display when under pressure to oust Jesper de Jong 6-4, 7-6(4) on Saturday and reach his first indoor championship match since he won Basel in 2023. Auger-Aliassime recovered from a break deficit in the second set, where he also saved two set points, to move into a 17th career final (6-10) after two hours, two minutes.

    “The second set was very tricky, up and down,” said Auger-Aliassime. “I started serving less good and kept him in the match, but in the end I was glad I was able to come back and win in two sets. Not every match is going to be a straight road forward, so to pull it through in straight sets is a great thing.”

    After suffering a back injury at the end of last season, which forced him out of the Rolex Paris Masters, Auger-Aliassime has begun the year with a renewed vigour. The 24-year-old won his sixth ATP Tour title at the Adelaide International in January and holds a 9-2 record in 2025 heading into the Montpellier final on Sunday. He is seeking his first multi-title season since he lifted four trophies, all indoors, in 2022.

    In Saturday’s semi-final clash with De Jong, Auger-Aliassime held his nerve when it mattered most. The Canadian No. 1 lost his way in an error-strewn second set, where he was broken to love and forced to save two set points, but produced an emphatic response in the tie-break to seal a straight-sets victory.

    “[I was] very focused until the very end, until the last ball. I have lost matches like this where you miss the forehand and all of a sudden you’re in a third set,” said Auger-Aliassime, who squandered a two-sets-to-love lead against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round at the Australian Open last month. “So I tried to stay calm and very focused until the end.”

    It All Adds Up

    In Sunday’s final, Auger-Aliassime will face qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic, who stunned top seed and World No. 10 Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-4 for the biggest win of his career. In a match dominated by baseline exchanges, Kovacevic produced consistent depth from both wings to irritate his opponent en route to reaching his maiden tour-level final.

    “It seems like every day we have the same conversation about me playing the best match I ever played,” Kovacevic said in his on-court interview. “My level has definitely been good this week. Andrey is an incredible player, I have been watching him for years. Just stepping on the court with someone like this is a privilege.

    “When you’re an underdog, playing a Top 10 opponent like that, you’re a lot more free. You have to go for it against these guys. I’m honoured to be on court with them, but if you don’t show up they’re going to take it, just like they always do.”

     

    With his 95-minute win over Rublev, Kovacevic climbs to No. 75 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, three spots off his career high. The 26-year-old produced a gutsy display throughout his maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Rublev, but was particularly fired up in the second set. Kovacevic saved a break point with a big second serve in the ninth game before reeling off four of the last five points on return in the following game to seal victory.

Last year in Montpellier, Felix reached the semifinals, losing against Bublik in three tight sets.

    Felix Auger-Aliassime continued his assured start to the 2025 season on Friday at the Open Occitanie in Montpellier.

    The second seed at the indoor hard-court ATP 250 defeated Buyunchaokete 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals for a second consecutive year. By advancing to the last four in Montpellier, Auger-Aliassime joins Jannik Sinner (33) and Carlos Alcaraz (31) as the only players born since 2000 to reach 30 tour-level semi-finals. The 24-year-old, who won his sixth ATP Tour title at the Adelaide International earlier this month, improves to 8-2 in 2025.

    “My game is more disciplined,” said Auger-Aliassime when asked about his new approach to the 2025 campaign. “I feel like last year I had some brilliant shots but also moments where I made a lot of mistakes. But now, two straight-sets wins, [I am] more solid and I am happy with that because that’s the goal. Hopefully I go one more step and get to the finals on Sunday.”

    With his 51st indoor win since the start of the 2022 season, Auger-Aliassime extended his Tour lead ahead of Holger Rune (42) and Sinner (40). The former World No. 6 was imperious on serve throughout his maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Buyunchaokete, during which he won 86 per cent (30/35) points behind his first delivery, according to Infosys ATP Stats, and fired 11 aces. 

    It All Adds Up

    Auger-Aliassime will next face Jesper de Jong, who stunned countryman and fifth seed Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(5), 6-4 after one hour, 46 minutes to reach his maiden tour-level semi-final.

    “We know each other well, it’s never easy… but I was very hungry to play him,” said De Jong, the No. 131 in the PIF ATP Rankings. “He is No. 1 in the Netherlands, the pressure is on him. I had nothing to lose so I was ready and looking forward to it.”

    Competing in his first ATP Tour quarter-final, De Jong showed few signs of nerves. The 24-year-old saved each of the six break points he faced in the first set before producing a stunning backhand pass at 3/3 in the tie-break to move clear. In the second set, an out-of-sorts Griekspoor was unable to limit his unforced error count, which ultimately rose to 30.

    On the other side of the draw, Andrey Rublev advanced to the semi-finals after Nikoloz Basilashvili was forced to retire with the top seed leading 5-2 in the first set. With his second win of the 2025 season, the 27-year-old advanced to his 42nd ATP Tour semi-final, and first since reaching the ATP Masters 1000 Montreal final in August last year.

    “I played many great matches with Niko, he won many of them and I won some of them as well,” said Rublev, who now leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 4-3. “He’s a really great player and a really nice person, so I hope that it’s nothing serious and that he will recover for the next week.”

    With a title run in Montpellier, Rublev would become the fourth man to win his first 17 tour-level titles all at different events in ATP Tour history (since 1990) after Medvedev (20), Stich (18) and Ivanisevic (17).

    Rublev will next face American qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic, who upset two-time champion Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-2. Kovacevic, 26, won 84 per cent of his first-serve points and fended off all eight break points he faced. The former University of Illinois standout is into his second tour-level semi-final and first since 2022 Seoul. Kovacevic is up to No. 83 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

    Tallon Griekspoor settled back in quickly to indoor conditions on Tuesday at the Open Occitanie in Montpellier.

    The Dutchman overcame countryman Botic van de Zandschulp 7-5, 6-3 in a topsy-turvy 95-minute battle. Now with 24 indoor wins since the start of the 2023 season, Griekspoor trails only the No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Jannik Sinner (33) for most on the ATP Tour.

    “I’ve always played well here, felt well… I like the conditions,” said Griekspoor. “I like a roof above my head, the same as Rotterdam next week. It’s perfect for me to be here, first win of the season, a great day so far.

    “It’s very not easy to play each other, we practise together every day when we’re back home in Amsterdam. We know each other better than anyone else I guess, so that also makes it very tricky. I don’t think we played our best match, but that’s what happens when you know each other so well.”

    It All Adds Up

    Griekspoor squandered a break lead in both sets, but made amends with his clinical performance at the net. The fifth seed won 18 of 24 points when at the forecourt, according to Infosys ATP Stats, en route to improving to 2-1 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Van de Zandschulp.

    Awaiting the Dutchman in the second round is three-time champion Richard Gasquet, who prevailed 6-3, 6-2 in an all-French clash with Adrian Mannarino. It was a record-extending 29th main-draw win in Montpellier for Gasquet, who has announced he will retire after Roland Garros this year.

    “It’s always special to play against a friend. We are used to it. I’ve played many times against a French player,” said Gasquet after his 76-minute victory. “It’s a little bit different, and my last time here in Montpellier so of course I’m really happy to win.

    “I hope Adrian will win in the future, but I’m really happy with how I played. It’s really important for me to play another match. I really like to play here, I won many times, so I’m really happy to play here again.”

    In other action in Montpellier, Christopher Eubanks battled past qualifier Alibek Kachmazov 7-5 6-4 to set up a meeting with top seed Andrey Rublev. Frenchman Constant Lestienne rallied back from 2-5 in the second set to defeat Borna Coric 6-3, 7-5, and Mattia Bellucci defeated 2018 champion Lucas Pouille 6-4, 6-4. In an all-French matchup, seventh seed Arthur Rinderknech eliminated Harold Mayot 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-1 in two hours and 10 minutes.



    Tallon Griekspoor put on a dominant display as he powered past fellow Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round of the Open Sud de France in Montpellier.
