  • LDS Church calls Netflix series ‘dangerously misleading’

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is calling a recently released Netflix series “dangerously misleading,” claiming it mischaracterizes LDS prophet Brigham Young.

“American Primeval”, which started streaming on Netflix earlier this month, follows a group of LDS pioneers trying to survive the American frontier during the Utah War of 1857.

    More US and World News

The show depicts an event known as the “Mountain Meadows Massacre where local Latter-day Saint militiamen, aided by American Indian allies, massacred about 120 emigrants traveling by wagon to California.

“While historical fiction can be illuminating, this drama is dangerously misleading. Brigham Young, a revered prophet and courageous pioneer, is, by any historical standard, egregiously mischaracterized as a villainous, violent fanatic. Other individuals and groups are also depicted in ways that reinforce stereotypes that are both inaccurate and harmful,” a statement from the Church read, in part.

‘Gross misrepresentations’: LDS Church speaks on portrayals in Hollywood

The Church continued to say they have long acknowledged and condemned the tragedy while promoting healing and unveiling the truth of the event. They added that “deceptive, graphic and sensationalized” storytelling hides reality and hinders genuine understanding, but can “foster animosity, hate, and even violence.”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Peter Berg responded to criticism of the show’s representations. He said it’s not a literal depiction of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, as those massacres took place over three days and the one in the show happens quickly.

“I’ve heard some of the pushback, but I haven’t heard anyone from the Mormon side deny that the Meadows Massacre happened and that Mormons did it. I have had them express concerns that we do take other liberties,” he said.

ABC4 has reached out to the team of “American Primeval”, but has yet to hear back at this time.

This isn’t the only time the church has responded to its depictions in media. The church also released a response shortly before the film “Heretic” came out, an A24 film where two missionaries of the church were trapped by the character of Mr. Reed, who put them through trials of their faith and beliefs.

Without naming a specific film or show, the Church has said some of its Hollywood portrayals are “fair and accurate”, but also said some portrayals are stereotypes or gross misrepresentations that have real-life consequences.

“We understand the fascination some in the media have with the Church, but regret that portrayals often rely on sensationalism and inaccuracies that do not fairly and fully reflect the lives of our Church members or the sacred beliefs that they hold dear,” the Church said in a statement.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has spoken out against the popular Netflix series “The Book of Mormon,” calling it “dangerously misleading.”

In a statement released on their official website, the LDS Church expressed concerns about the way the show portrays their faith and its teachings. The series, which follows the lives of fictional characters in a Utah-based Mormon community, has been criticized for its inaccurate and often sensationalized depiction of the religion.

The Church urged viewers to be cautious when consuming media that claims to represent their beliefs, emphasizing the importance of seeking out accurate information from reliable sources. They also emphasized the importance of respecting the beliefs and practices of others, regardless of their faith.

The statement concluded by encouraging members of the LDS Church to engage in open and honest discussions about their faith with those who may have questions or misconceptions. The Church is committed to promoting understanding and dialogue, even in the face of media portrayals that may not accurately represent their beliefs.

Overall, the LDS Church’s response to “The Book of Mormon” serves as a reminder of the importance of critical thinking and discernment when consuming media, especially when it comes to matters of faith.

  • ‘The Night Agent’ Is the Platonic Ideal of a Netflix Show

TVTVAs Netflix has evolved, so, too, has its strategy for making hit television. Season 2 of ‘The Night Agent’ is a reminder of how it’s done.

    Netflix/Ringer illustration

The Netflix of 2025 is a much different beast from the Netflix of a decade ago. In its early days as a streamer, Netflix took big swings with its original programming, headlined by spending $100 million to make the first two seasons of House of Cards, sight unseen. Flagship shows from that era like Orange Is the New Black, The Crown, and Narcos checked similar boxes: bold, lavish prestige television that wouldn’t feel out of place on HBO or FX. In a sense, Netflix was ahead of the curve, anticipating that studios would eventually balk at licensing their shows in favor of launching rival streamers. Soon, Netflix wasn’t just an industry upstart: It was fundamentally changing Hollywood

As Netflix has expanded, however, the company’s priorities have shifted. The days when a drama such as (respectfully) Bloodline can get three seasons are a thing of the past. Now, Netflix originals have a much shorter leash when it comes to renewal: Time and again, promising projects aren’t given enough time to find an audience. The streamer also has its fingers in many different pies: reality TV, live sports, docuseries, international productions, and so on. As a result, Netflix isn’t just content with being the new HBO: It wants to be streaming’s answer to cable, a one-stop shop for all your entertainment needs.

Netflix’s mindset for its original series has also evolved. As Netflix executive Jinny Howe put it, the streamer’s ideal show these days is a “gourmet cheeseburger” that can be “premium and commercial at the same time.” That description certainly doesn’t apply to, say, Mindhunter, a prestige drama that was beloved by David Fincher obsessives but managed to eke out only two seasons. (As always, justice for Mindhunter.) Howe pointed to Bridgerton as an example of a gourmet cheeseburger show done right. I can’t argue with that, but for another example of a delectable gourmet cheeseburger—this time with a Dad TV sensibility—I’d like to nominate The Night Agent

    More on Netflix’s Industry Dominance

Based on the Matthew Quirk novel of the same name, The Night Agent’s first season follows Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso), an FBI agent who saves countless passengers from a subway bombing in Washington, D.C. After Peter himself is questioned for the attack—partially on account of his late father being a suspected traitor—he’s assigned to a seemingly dead-end job answering the phone for Night Action, an off-the-books government program with agents working undercover around the globe. One night, Peter gets a call from Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), a cybersecurity CEO who has just escaped a pair of assassins who murdered her aunt and uncle. Peter guides Rose to safety before discovering that her relatives secretly worked as Night Agents themselves, and whatever they were investigating could be connected to the D.C. Metro bombing. As Peter safeguards Rose from a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of the White House, he soon finds himself in a race against time to prevent more attacks on American soil. (Spoiler alert: Peter does, in fact, save the day.)

In terms of plot and execution, The Night Agent didn’t bring anything new to the table, but that’s a feature of the series, not a bug. If you’re a fan of ’90s action-thrillers (In the Line of Fire, Air Force One, The Fugitive) or the Bourne franchise, The Night Agent scratches a similar itch, combining exciting action set pieces with twists that, if sometimes predictable, aren’t ridiculous enough to insult the audience’s intelligence. (Basso, meanwhile, doesn’t have the charisma of someone like Matt Damon, but he’s a serviceable action hero worth rooting for.) If Netflix is making a serious bid to replace cable for the next generation, then The Night Agent is the streamer’s answer to 24: a taut thriller that splits the difference between a trashy airport novel and more sophisticated genre fare.

In other words, The Night Agent has all the ingredients of a gourmet cheeseburger. Netflix subscribers, in turn, ate The Night Agent up, as it became the most viewed series on the platform in the first half of 2023. Now, The Night Agent is back for its second season, attempting to find similar success. (The show has also scored an early Season 3 renewal.) This time around, Peter has been promoted from a desk job to a position as an agent in the field, working undercover in Bangkok alongside his new mentor, Alice (Brittany Snow).

The new season puts us right in the middle of the action, with Peter and Alice surveilling a subject who may be linked to a leak within the CIA. When the duo splits up after encountering another person of interest, however, armed assailants arrive on their tail, leaving Peter and Alice to tear through the streets of Bangkok to reach an extraction point. Except—gasp—the bad guys know exactly where they’re headed; one thing leads to another, and Alice is gunned down before Peter narrowly escapes. There’s only one way this could’ve happened, and you might want to brace yourself for this revelation: Night Action has also been compromised, leaving Peter with no one he can trust—again—other than his old pal Rose, who now works at a tech startup.

The formula is familiar from The Night Agent’s first season: dynamic action scenes, a government conspiracy, flashbacks that recontextualize a character’s motivations, the threat of domestic terrorism, Peter and Rose making out during some downtime. In fact, where the show’s second season disappoints is its meager attempts at trying something new. Bangkok is an intriguing setting for The Night Agent, hinting at a future where Peter’s heroic exploits occur on a global scale. But with the exception of the dynamite opening sequence, Bangkok is barely featured in the series. (Once Peter escapes, he spends most of the season in New York.) To paraphrase Kevin Garnett as Kevin Garnett in Uncut Gems, why the fuck would you show me Bangkok if I couldn’t stay there then?! (The White Lotus Season 3 can’t come soon enough.)

That’s more of a highbrow critique, to be fair, and The Night Agent isn’t a highbrow show. This is quintessential Dad TV: a meat-and-potatoes thriller that sets out to do everything you’d expect it to and doesn’t push boundaries. If it had fewer F-bombs, you could envision The Night Agent airing on a broadcast network during the aughts. Of course, these qualities also make the series a far cry from some of the ambitious swings Netflix originally championed. In that respect, The Night Agent is the platonic ideal of what a modern Netflix show should strive to be: accessible, middlebrow popcorn entertainment. Perhaps that sounds like a backhanded compliment—not only about The Night Agent, but also about Netflix’s broader mandate to make more gourmet cheeseburgers. But is it really such a bad thing when I’m already eager to binge Season 3?

If you’re looking for your next binge-worthy series on Netflix, look no further than “The Night Agent.” This thrilling show is the epitome of what a perfect Netflix show should be – suspenseful, intriguing, and full of twists and turns.

“The Night Agent” follows the story of a former intelligence officer who is pulled back into the world of espionage when he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens the very fabric of society. As he delves deeper into the mystery, he must navigate a web of lies, betrayal, and danger, all while trying to protect those he cares about.

With its fast-paced plot, complex characters, and jaw-dropping plot twists, “The Night Agent” is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. And with each episode leaving you craving more, you won’t be able to resist hitting that “next episode” button.

  • The Best Spy Thriller On Netflix Just Returned With A Fantastic New Season

Updated 01.25.25 — See updates below.

After a nearly two-year wait one of the best shows on Netflix just dropped its second season, and it’s great. If you enjoy high-octane action, nefarious terrorist plots and plenty of tense espionage, you’re in for a treat.

The Night Agent is a no-frills, unpretentious spy thriller that should please anyone who enjoys the genre. It combines a competent plot with a likeable cast of heroes and villains. The second season is out now on Netflix, but if you missed the first you should definitely start there.

Season 1 of The Night Agent introduces us to the secretive Night Action program, a top-secret federal team of spies that investigate corruption within the United States government, finding moles and double-agents in the CIA and even the upper echelons of power.

The story follows Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) who is given a job answering a telephone in a secret room in the White House. He’s basically the dispatcher for Night Action, but soon he finds himself caught up in a plot that stretches all the way to the Oval Office. He meets Rose (Luciane Buchanan) after he receives a distress call, and from here things go from bad to worse. The duo is faced with double-crosses, intense chases and plenty more as they try to stay alive and figure out who’s pulling the strings.

Season 2 adds a few new layers of complexity to the mix, juggling several subplots filled with intrigue, international espionage and even more dire stakes. Just like the first season, this is a series that isn’t trying to be super sexy or super smart, but carries out its spycraft with workmanlike efficiency. Yes, it’s over-the-top a lot of the time, but its leads are down to earth and relatable and it’s entertaining from the get-go.

If you’re looking for a binge this weekend, and especially if you’re a fan of shows like Slow Horses, Reacher, Killing Eve and Jack Ryan, do yourself a favor and give The Night Agent a shot.

    Update 1.25.25

While The Night Agent is a fun spy show, it’s not the only one you should check out if you’re a fan of the genre. Here are a few other spy thrillers that are must-see TV and should help scratch that particular itch.

    Slow Horses (Apple TV)

Slow Horses is the only show on Apple TV that gives Severance a run for its money. This is the sharpest, most tightly-paced and written spy shows currently airing. It’s also hilarious. Gary Oldman leads a tremendous cast as Jackson Lamb, the curmudgeonly, slovenly boss of Slough House, where MI5 sends its rejects. Every season so far has been absolutely brilliant, edge-of-your-seat television.

    The Night Manager (Hulu)

This BBC limited series is based off the 1993 novel by John le Carré. It stars Tom Hiddleston as the night manager of a Cairo hotel who gets mixed up in a dangerous plot. Hugh Laurie plays a ruthless arms dealer. The cast is rounded out by Elizabeth Debicki, Olivia Colman, Tom Hollander and David Harewood. Like all le Carré espionage, this is a slow burn that builds up to a crackling finale.

    Homeland (Paramount+)

One of the best spy thrillers of all time, Homeland is a must-watch entry in the genre, and with eight seasons this should give you plenty to watch. The first season is still one of the best seasons of TV I’ve ever seen. Claire Danes plays bipolar CIA operative Carrie Mathison. She suspects that a recently released POW, Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) has been turned into a double-agent by his terrorist captors. Mandy Patinkin plays Carrie’s boss, Saul Berenson. While the series has its low points, it’s still solid from start to finish.

    The Spy (Netflix)

Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen is best known as Borat and it is a bit shocking to see him play such a serious role in The Spy, but he does a terrific job as Eli Cohen, a real-life Israeli Mossad spy who infiltrates the Syrian government in the lead-up to the Six Day War. Based on real events, this is a genuinely compelling spy drama and Cohen is terrific. Not necessarily the most thrilling of these spy thrillers, but still worth a watch.

    Patriot (Prime Video)

Patriot is both wildly underrated and very, very quirky and weird. Michael Dorman plays a depressed spy / musician named John Tavner on a mission to stop Iran from going nuclear. Terry O’Quinn plays Tavner’s father, also an intelligence officer, and Michael Chernus (who you’ll recognize as Ricken from Severance) plays his bumbling brother. The show is . . . genuinely very off-kilter. It’s nothing at all like what I was expecting. Give it a shot.

    The Americans (Hulu)

One of my favorite spy thrillers of all time, The Americans follows the dangerous lives of Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings—played by Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell—two Soviet spies who live in America and pretend to be Americans. They have perfect accents. They have a family, and their kids don’t even know the truth. As they lead their normal, suburban lives, they also carry out crazy espionage missions for the KGB. It’s not only an incredibly tense series, it’s also a morally complex one, where you really struggle with your feelings about these characters. Noah Emmerich also stars as the Jennings’ neighbor who, it turns out, is an FBI officer working in counter-intelligence. Another series that starts off strong and gets all the way to the finish line intact.

Attention all spy thriller fans! The highly anticipated new season of “The Bodyguard” has finally arrived on Netflix, and it does not disappoint. With its intense action-packed scenes, gripping plot twists, and stellar performances from the cast, this show is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Richard Madden returns as the brooding and complex bodyguard David Budd, who finds himself embroiled in a new high-stakes mission that puts his life on the line. As he navigates through a web of deceit, betrayal, and political intrigue, viewers are taken on a thrilling ride filled with suspense and adrenaline-pumping moments.

The writing is sharp, the direction is top-notch, and the chemistry between the characters is electrifying. From heart-pounding chase scenes to heart-wrenching emotional moments, “The Bodyguard” delivers in every aspect.

So grab your popcorn, settle in, and get ready for a wild ride with the best spy thriller on Netflix. Trust us, you won’t be able to stop watching.

  • 7 most anticipated Netflix movies of 2025, ranked

Netflix has one of the best movie libraries in streaming, if not the best. Often considered the king of streamers, Netflix has a strong collection of pictures, both original and acquired, that make it the ultimate destination for streaming fans looking to spend a night in. Netflix has also become a giant thanks to its constant flow of content, premiering a new movie every week and producing some very high-profile projects from major names in entertainment.

2025 won’t be any different, as Netflix has several major movies coming out over the next twelve months. From auteur-driven remakes of classics of horror to ambitious adaptations of sci-fi novels to long-awaited sequels to major successes, Netflix’s library for 2025 is full of modern hits in the making. These movies will all surely attract major crowds, and some might even become major players at the 2026 awards season, ensuring Netflix’s place as the ultimate leader in the streaming space.

    7. Havoc

Tom Hardy firing a rifle in Havoc.
    Netflix

Tom Hardy is one of the most accomplished actors of his generation, and everything he does comes with a degree of anticipation and prestige. However, Havoc is slightly more interesting, as it was initially shot in 2021 and has been in something of a limbo ever since it wrapped. Delays concerning the 2023 strikes and scheduling issues, plus reshoots last year, meant that the film went far too long without seeing the light of day.

Directed by The Raid‘s Gareth Evans, Havoc follows a detective entering the criminal world to save a politician’s son after a drug deal gone wrong. The supporting cast includes Oscar winner Forest Whitaker and Emmy nominee Timothy Olyphant, making it an even hotter ticket. It’s still unknown when it will premiere, but Evans stated last year he hoped for a release in the first half of 2025, meaning we might not have to wait long before this long-gestating project finally premieres.

    6. The Electric State

A girl and two men stand and stare in "The Electric State."
    Paul Abell/Netflix / Netflix

Millie Bobby Brown, undoubtedly the First Lady of Netflix, joins forces with Chris Pratt for the Russo Brothers’ sci-fi adventure The Electric State. Very loosely based on the eponymous 2018 graphic novel and set in a dystopian 1994, the film stars Brown as Michelle, a young woman approached by a robot who claims to have information about her missing brother. Alongside Brown and Pratt, the film also stars Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, and Giancarlo Esposito.

Although the Russo Brothers have been pretty hit-or-miss following their stint in the MCU, The Electric State seems right up their alley. However, the changes they made to the story have already attracted a negative reaction from fans, who expected a more straightforward adaptation of the source material. Brown will have a busy slate with Netflix in 2025, with this promising film premiering on March 14, plus the fifth and final season of Stranger Things coming out sometime after.

    5. Jay Kelly

    George Clooney in Tomorrowland.
    Walt Disney Pictures

In 2019, Noah Baumbach scored one of his greatest critical hits with Marriage Story for Netflix. While the follow-up, White Noise, was less successful, the director is back with the streamer for Jay Kelly, which might be his ticket back to the Oscars. Co-written by the ever-underrated Emily Mortimer, the film will star an ensemble cast, including Oscar winners George Clooney, Laura Dern and Jim Broadbent alongside Adam Sandler, Billy Krudup, and Riley Keough.

Not much is known about the plot, but we can expect another introspective dramedy based on Baumbach’s previous work. A more international story can also be expected, as the film was shot in New York, London, and Tuscany. Netflix will probably want to position this as an awards contender, so a premiere in the fall of 2025 makes sense. With such a talented ensemble and director, Jay Kelly has the potential to be one of the streamer’s most acclaimed efforts of the year.

    4. The Immortal Man

    The cast of Peaky Blinders.
    BBC/Netflix

Peaky Blinders ended in 2022. Ever since, rumors have been circulating about a film adaptation that would continue the story of Tommy Shelby and his criminal family. Finally, in 2024, show creator Steven Knight confirmed a movie in the works, with Oscar winner Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Tommy Shelby. Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle, and Packy Lee will also reprise their roles, with Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan joining the cast.

Little is known about The Immortal Man‘s plot other than that it will take place years after the show’s conclusion. However, Peaky Blinders remains such a beloved show that it’s hard to imagine this movie not doing well. Murphy and Knight’s return, plus the promise of more stylish violence, are plenty to compel audiences to tune into this long-awaited movie. There’s no date of release, but considering it wrapped filming in December 2024, it’s safe to expect The Immortal Man at some point this year.

    3. Happy Gilmore 2

Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore during a golf match in Happy Gilmore 2.
    Netflix

Happy Gilmore is one of Adam Sandler’s most beloved movies, so it was always going to get a sequel. The actor is famous for its long-term partnership with Netflix, and Happy Gilmore 2 will be another entry into their ever-expanding collaboration. Alongside Sandler, original stars Christopher McDonald and multi-Emmy winner Julie Bowen will also return, joined by newcomers like Bad Bunny and Margaret Qualley.

Like most Netflix movies set to premiere this year, plot details for Happy Gilmore 2 are scarce. However, audiences can expect the familiar brand of humor that has made Sandler such a massive star, plus a collection of cameos that will include several pro-golfers and musicians like Eminem. Sandler has carved himself a comfortable place among Netflix’s biggest stars, and Happy Gilmore 2 will only increase his lucrative relationship with the streamer.

    2. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc looking to his right in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
    Netflix

Ryan Johnson returns to the whodunit world with Wake Up Dead Man, the third entry in his Knives Out series following 2019’s Knives Out and 2022’s Glass Onion. Daniel Craig returns as detective Benoit Blanc, this time joined by a massive cast including Oscar nominees Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, and Thomas Haden Church. Also starring are Josh O’Connor, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Mila Kunis, and Kerry Washington.

Unsurprisingly, plot details are still under wraps, but we know both Brolin and O’Connor will play priests. Considering the huge success of both previous entries in this modern series, it’s safe to say Wake Up Dead Man is among the most highly anticipated movies of the year, not only from Netflix but overall. Knives Out and Glass Onion were both November releases, so chances are Wake Up Dead Man will follow suit and premiere the same month following an awards-friendly debut on TIFF.

    1. Frankenstein

A group of Victorian men looking ahead in Netflix's Frankenstein.
    Netflix

Frankenstein will continue Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro’s collaboration with Netflix, yet another adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic work of Gothic fiction. Oscar Isaac will star as Doctor Victor Frankenstein, with Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s monster and Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, and Oscar winner Christoph Waltz in undisclosed roles.

Knowing del Toro, fans can expect a faithful adaptation of Shelley’s classic with a political edge. Netflix will surely want to position this film as a major awards contender, so a late 2025 premiere makes the most sense, meaning fans will have to wait a bit until they see it. However, the wait will surely be worth it; del Toro is one of the most prolific and acclaimed directors working today, and his horror sensibilities are a perfect match for Frankenstein. Thus, this horror story is not only the most highly anticipated Netflix original of the year but arguably the most anticipated movie of 2025 overall.

    1. "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever"
Fans are eagerly awaiting the sequel to the groundbreaking superhero film, which is set to explore the legacy of the late Chadwick Boseman’s iconic character, T’Challa.

    2. "Stranger Things 5"
The beloved sci-fi series is returning for its fifth season, promising more supernatural adventures and 80s nostalgia.

    3. "The Witcher: Blood Origin"
This prequel to the hit fantasy series will delve into the origins of the Witcher universe, exploring the history of the first Witcher and the creation of the monsters they fight.

    4. "Avatar: The Last Airbender"
Based on the popular animated series, this live-action adaptation is highly anticipated by fans who are hoping for a faithful retelling of the beloved story.

    5. "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair"
The next installment in the Narnia film series, this adaptation of the classic novel promises to bring more magic and adventure to the screen.

    6. "The Umbrella Academy: Season 4"
The dysfunctional superhero family is returning for another season of time-traveling shenanigans and world-saving missions.

    7. "The Kissing Booth 4"
Fans of the teen romantic comedy series can’t wait to see how the love triangle between Elle, Noah, and Marco plays out in the fourth installment.

Back in Action is the next big Netflix original action movie which follows a married couple whose children are shocked to learn are retired secret agents. When their old agency begins targeting them, they go on the run with their family. Multiple chases, fight scenes, and betrayals ensue, making for one of the most thrilling adventures of their lives.

While the premise may sound like any number of other similar movies, Back in Action is particularly exciting for the talent working on the film. The cast includes Cameron Diaz in her first film role in over a decade and Jamie Foxx, who infamously suffered a stroke during filming. Both actors are “back in action” as the lead players in this Netflix original film, but they aren’t alone. This also marks the first film from director Seth Gordon in almost seven years, with his last cinematic project being 2017’s Baywatch.

The Electric State Is The Russo Brothers’ Next Big Movie

    Release Date: March 14

The Electric State is a new Netflix original movie set in an alternate 1994 where humans and robots share the world. Loosely based on Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel of the same name, The Electric State will feature Netflix’s resident superstar Millie Bobby Brown as she embarks on a daring cross-country mission to rescue her missing brother. Along the way, she teams up with Chris Pratt’s Keats, a drifter who aims to help her on her quest.

In addition to its inventive premise, The Electric State includes an all-star creative team that should sound familiar to fans of superhero movies. The upcoming film reunites directors Anthony and Joe Russo with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. This team is responsible for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, which are often considered to be four of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie will also include several stars from those films, including Anthony Mackie and Chris Pratt. With a powerhouse creative team like this, The Electric State is a must-watch offering from Netflix as it continues to build its original movie library.

A sequel to 2020’s surprise hit, the upcoming film is set to follow the continuing adventures of Andromache of Scythia and her elite team. Like the original movie, The Old Guard 2 will adapt elements from Greg Rucka’s original comic book series. Charlize Theron is confirmed to reprise her role, with several other cast members from the original movie also set to return.

While little is known about The Old Guard 2, fans are especially excited to see where Netflix takes the franchise next. The original movie was a surprise hit for the streamer, earning mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences. The sequel can plunge further into the action, leaving the worldbuilding and exposition of its predecessor behind to deliver a riveting second entry in a burgeoning franchise.

    Release Date: February 11

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is a new anime spinoff of Netflix’s hit The Witcher series. The film will see Anya Chalotra return as Yennefer and Joey Batey return as Jaskier.

Although The Witcher fandom is currently in chaos after the announcement that Henry Cavill will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in Season 4, Sirens of the Deep looks to bridge these two different eras of the series with an animated adventure that all viewers will love. Doug Cockle voices Geralt in the upcoming movie, reprising his role from the original video game and thereby giving audiences more reason to rally behind this animated venture.

Happy Gilmore 2 Brings Back Adam Sandler’s Most Iconic Character

    Release Date: 2025

A sequel to a hit Adam Sandler movie seems surprisingly rare, yet Happy Gilmore is bucking this trend with its upcoming sequel, which is set to hit Netflix later this year. A follow-up to Sandler’s iconic 1996 sports film, Happy Gilmore 2 will pick up nearly three decades after audiences last saw the eponymous golfer, who seems to have lost his signature short temper–but who knows for how long?

Adam Sandler’s previous partnerships with Netflix have mostly been successful, with Murder Mystery and its sequel standing out as fan favorites. Moreover, the comedian’s hesitance to make sequels to his hit films (with the rare exceptions of Murder Mystery 2 and Grown Ups 2) makes Happy Gilmore 2 all the more exciting. Fans can’t wait to reunite with Sandler and a returning cast of familiar faces from the original movie.

The Immortal Man Continues the Story of Peaky Blinders

    Release Date: 2025

The Immortal Man is an upcoming movie set to continue the Peaky Blinders franchise after the hit crime series came to an end in 2022 with its sixth season. Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his iconic role as Thomas Shelby in the upcoming film, with several other key cast members joining him, as well as several new cast members, including Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, and Barry Keoghan.

Although very little is known about The Immortal Man, it is undoubtedly one of Netflix’s most exciting releases in the coming year. Peaky Blinders is known for its impeccable writing and acting, which bodes well for the film follow-up, which can elevate the stakes of the original series while continuing its intriguing storyline. With a stacked cast and an avid fan following, everything is lining up in favor of The Immortal Man.

Frankenstein Brings Together an Iconic Director and a Terrific Cast

    Release Date: 2025

Guillermo del Toro appears in front of different versions of Frankenstein

Although Netflix has sometimes been known to throw money at A-list actors to appear in subpar action films, the streamer also delivers several creative films worthy of accolades. For 2025, the most exciting of these artsy films is Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which will deliver a fresh take on Mary Shelly’s iconic horror novel. The film will star Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s Monster, Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, and Mia Goth as the Bride of Frankenstein.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is the third installment of Rian Johnson’s hit murder-mystery franchise. Following the success of the original film, Netflix purchased the rights to the Knives Out franchise, greenlighting two sequels to be released exclusively on the streaming service. Of course, Daniel Craig will also return to play the iconic detective Benoit Blanc as he gets to the bottom of another twisty mystery. Rian Johnson has developed a reputation for successfully subverting audience expectations, single-handedly reviving the murder mystery genre. Cunk on Life (Jan. 2)

Idiotic British program presenter Philomena Cunk (Diane Morgan) returns to baffle academics with her buffoonery in Cunk on Life, the latest special from Black Mirror‘s Charlie Brooker. After musing about our planet in Cunk on Earth, which Netflix aired in 2022, Cunk will ponder the meaning of life while asking scholars some of the dumbest questions they’ve ever heard. Cunk on Earth was fantastic; this should also be a hoot. [Trailer]

    American Primeval (Jan. 9)

Macho director Peter Berg brings his macho sensibility to the Wild West with the incredibly macho American Primeval, a Western showing how dismal (and macho) the old American West once was. Seriously, this show is all about how horrible it was just to try to see tomorrow as the cowboys, Native Americans, the prospectors, the Mormons, the fugitives, the drunks, and even some naughty children all tried to get their piece of the pie. Expect shootings, stabbings, and scalpings, sometimes all at once. Betty Gilpin, Taylor Kitsch, and Shea Whigham star. [Trailer]

XO, Kitty Season 2 (Jan. 16)

The To All the Boys cinematic universe continues on with the second season of its TV spin-off XO, Kitty. Anna Cathcart returns as Kitty, the love-happy matchmaker who ran into a bunch of relationship problems in Season 1 as she enrolled in an international school in Korea. In Season 2, she’s single and ready to mingle! But only casually. Yeah right. [Teaser] [Everything to Know About XO, Kitty Season 2]

The Night Agent Season 2 (Jan. 23)

No one knew what The Night Agent was when it came out in 2023, but that’s not the case for Season 2. The debut season of Shawn Ryan’s thriller became Netflix’s seventh-most watched English-language show of all time, surprising just about everyone. Most details are under wraps, but in Season 2, FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), working toward becoming a full-fledged Night Agent, will travel to Thailand and New York City. [Teaser] [Everything to Know About The Night Agent Season 2]
