An annual tradition (except for in 2022), best friends and co-hosts Andy Cohen, Anderson Cooper, and tequila host CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live. Here’s how the besties rang in the New Year and who they convinced to take a shot with them as the night unfolded.
The boys are back. Cohen laid down the ground rules: at the top of every hour, Cohen and Cooper are going to take a shot of tequila together. However, Cohen didn’t specify how much was going to go into each shot. The two took the shot swimmingly; I mean, the first shot is always the easiest, right? Then Cooper shared his first words of wisdom for the evening: “If any young people are watching, at a certain point in your life, you will become the people you used to make fun of. And that’s what we’ve become.” We can only hope to be half as cool as them at their age.
The second shot is always the hardest. Cohen took in the second shot like a pro, but Cooper struggled through the shot of tequila, gagging after the liquor hit his mouth. He started to giggle as Cohen teased and playfully poked him. He’s a lightweight, folks, especially once Ralph Fiennes joined them to recite the “Very Mindful, Very Demure” meme.
Who accepted a shot: Ralph Fiennes, Michael Ian Black, and Amber Ruffin Who rejected a shot: Roy Wood Jr, with good reason.
Right before comedian Whitney Cummings came to roast 2024, Cohen and Cooper downed their third drink. Cooper clarified that they’ve only taken three shots only two hours before the New Year. As Cummings continued to fire shot after shot at what happened this year, the tequila must’ve been hitting. Cooper began to hide his face while laughing at Cummings’s jokes and then was suspiciously still, possibly disassociating as he remembered the night wasn’t over yet. Hold it in, Coop!
Who rejected a shot: Whitney Cummings
Cooper introduced the in memoriam segment of the night by sharing his distaste for New Year’s. His father died on January 5, 1978 and he’s always felt grief during the holiday, opting to work instead of celebrate.
Who accepted a shot: Andy Cohen’s parents
The duo toasted a glass of champagne with 50 Cent, who was celebrating in Vegas. Cooper notably didn’t really drink his glass. Maybe he’s out for the night.
Who accepted a glass: 50 Cent
Cohen wanted to keep the party going, pitching to Cooper that they should take another shot right before the New Year. But it seemed like Cooper wanted out for the night. “Why do people do this?” he asked. Someone get this man a water. Cohen held down the fort by leading Anthony Anderson and his mother, Mama Doris, in a game called the Mom-ly Wed Game.
Who accepted one shot: Anthony Anderson and his mother, Mama Doris Who accepted multiple shots: Diplo Who might allegedly be microdosing: Also, Diplo. No confirmation on that though, besides a thumbs up from the gentleman.
Cohen revealed that he and Cooper have already rung in 2025 with a toast, but argued that it “doesn’t count if it’s off-camera,” so they took another shot. “I just wanna say, this is the last drink I’m gonna have of 2025 … until 2026 New Year’s Eve,” Cooper declared. We look forward to it. (And thankfull, CNN has dropped a highlight reel to tide us over until then.)
As we rang in the new year, Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper once again hosted CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage from Times Square. The dynamic duo brought their usual banter, jokes, and camaraderie to the broadcast, keeping viewers entertained throughout the night. Let’s take a shot by shot breakdown of some of the most memorable moments from their NYE special:
1. Opening shot: The camera pans over the bustling crowd in Times Square as Andy and Anderson make their grand entrance, setting the stage for the night ahead.
2. Shot of the countdown clock: As the clock ticks closer to midnight, the tension and excitement build, with Andy and Anderson hyping up the moment.
3. Shot of Andy and Anderson’s matching outfits: The co-hosts never fail to coordinate their attire, and this year was no exception as they both rocked stylish suits and ties.
4. Shot of the celebrity guests: Throughout the night, Andy and Anderson welcomed a slew of famous faces to the broadcast, including musical performances and interviews with special guests.
5. Shot of the ball drop: The iconic moment when the ball drops in Times Square and the crowd erupts in cheers and confetti, signaling the start of a new year.
6. Shot of Andy and Anderson’s final sign-off: As the broadcast comes to a close, Andy and Anderson bid farewell to viewers and reflect on the night’s festivities, leaving us all feeling nostalgic and ready for the year ahead.
Overall, Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper once again delivered a fun and entertaining NYE special, reminding us why they are one of the best hosting duos in the business. Cheers to another year of laughs, cheers, and unforgettable moments with these two!
Many TV viewers tuning into the CBS New Year’s Eve “Big Bash” on December 31 might not be ready for the display of influence Nashville’s music stars are set to have on American pop culture, based on current hit songs and streaming trends.
The “Big Bash” will air from 8 to 10 p.m. ET/PT and from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. ET/PT on CBS, with streaming available on Paramount+. Live viewing is for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, while Paramount+ Essential subscribers can watch on-demand the day after.
The celebration includes performances from Downtown Nashville at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, featuring artists like Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Shaboozey, Keith Urban, and the critically acclaimed Brittney Spencer, leading up to the midnight music-note drop.
Artists at the 2024 New Year’s Eve celebration reveal through their performances that country music traditions endure despite changes.
Conversations with artists like Tyler Hubbard (formerly of Florida Georgia Line), 2023’s Country Entertainer of the Year Lainey Wilson, and Zach Top, nominated for CMA awards, underline the timeless appeal fueling Nashville’s cultural influence.
“We’re accomplishing everything that we told our fans and the music industry that we could achieve and because of that, we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel,” Wilson told a Tennessean reporter while breaking from rehearsals at Luke Bryan’s 32 Bridge honky-tonk on Lower Broadway.
Lainey Wilson ‘fueling the fire’ behind country’s pop cultural surge
Wilson hosted the festivities last year alongside rockers Elle King and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Nashville’s country music scene has evolved, now emphasizing both its mainstream popularity and the widespread acceptance of country artists’ capabilities across America.
Wilson has won 14 awards from the Academy of Country Music and the CMA since 2021, alongside seven No. 1 country hits. Her ballads like the Jelly Roll duet “Save Me” and the solo “Watermelon Moonshine” have also found success on all-genre top-40 radio, showcasing her crossover appeal.
“We’re excited and proud to be on the platforms we’re on, but if they’re anything like me, we’re also thinking about what we can improve on because I’m my worst critic,” Wilson said. “With every song and performance, we’re sharing all of ourselves to set the groundwork to fuel the fire behind a culture that people can also live.”
‘Passing the torch’ of loving country music
Washington State native Zach Top will spend part of 2025 touring with Country Music Hall of Famer and “Chattahoochee” vocalist Alan Jackson, one of his greatest inspirations. He’s also a skilled bluegrass picker and a singer-songwriter co-signed by everyone from Wilson to Dierks Bentley and any of your favorite traditional-style country performers crafting hits in Music City.
Top acknowledges the surprise of his success amidst the current trend of rappers like Jelly Roll and Post Malone, and R&B-influenced artists like Kane Brown and Shaboozey, dominating country music discussions. He points out that country music’s “cyclical” evolution has historically enabled traditional artists like George Strait and Randy Travis to thrive even when pop-country figures like Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton were mainstream, akin to artists like the Pointer Sisters and Lionel Richie in the ’80s.
“Whenever the doors get blown off country music, eventually things settle down and fiddles and steel guitars slowly return traditions to the genre,” Top told a Tennessean reporter on the rooftop of Eric Church’s Chief’s honky-tonk on Lower Broadway.
Eventually, though, the pace quickens. Top’s 2024 album, “Cold Beer and Country Music,” was so well received that two of its singles, “Sounds Like The Radio” and “I Never Lie,” led him to be nominated for the CMA’s 2024 Best New Artist award. His growing appeal has also landed him forthcoming touring dates with Alan Jackson.
Top touts country’s latest hitmakers being well-schooled since childhood about how the genre’s stars primarily achieved renown with well-regarded material catalogs, as keying the genre’s potential for more significant pop cultural dominance.
“We already know how to pass the torch to more people to get them to fall in love with country music,” he said.
Nashville hitmakers fan country music buzz
Tyler Hubbard, five years post-Florida Georgia Line and the hit “Cruise,” is now a solo artist with two albums in 14 months, including platinum singles “5 Foot 9” and “Dancin’ In The Country.”
Amidst rehearsals for New Year’s Eve performances at Miranda Lambert’s Casa Rosa and The Ryman, he notes the exciting growth in country music’s global appeal. On December 31, he’ll join a lineup featuring Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Post Malone, Chris Stapleton, and icons like Luke Bryan and Eric Church, showcasing the genre’s expansive influence.
“The momentum the fans are giving our industry is awesomely fun,” he said. “Country’s growth has allowed the genre to appeal to more artists and fans than ever worldwide — and they’re all passionate about the music and the potential of the good feeling surrounding country music.”
Hubbard is proud to be included in that number and even prouder of the total accomplishments of their work.
“Nashville is the new New York City,” he said. “But it’s the uniqueness of how the world is responding to the city — and country music’s — energy and how it can memorably impact every part of someone’s life that’s important. In the two decades I’ve been here, Nashville and country music have changed and grown into something that is, more than anything, an excitingly cool experience.”
Lainey Wilson is set to bring her fiery country spirit to CBS’ New Year’s Eve show, “fueling the fire” for viewers to “fall in love with country.” With her powerhouse vocals and infectious energy, Wilson is sure to captivate audiences and leave them wanting more.
Known for her hit songs like “Things a Man Oughta Know” and “Dirty Looks,” Wilson is a rising star in the country music scene. Her raw talent and authenticity shine through in every performance, making her a standout artist to watch in 2022.
Tune in to CBS’ New Year’s Eve show to see Lainey Wilson in action and get ready to be swept away by her undeniable talent and passion for country music. Let her music fuel the fire in your heart and fall in love with country all over again.

The one we’ve been waiting for around these parts since LaNorris Sellers bent the knee to run out the clock in Clemson is finally here. The Gamecocks will go into the game down two starters in Rocket Sanders and Kyle Kennard. Illinois is down their top wide out Pat Bryant.
Nationally, the playoffs return with two more lines indicated blowouts incoming. The later two New Year’s Day games should be worth the hype. Elsewhere on NYE – a rematch of a classic Rose Bowl semifinal game last season and the ACC has two more chances to cover a spread this bowl season.
All game times are listed in EST. The lines were locked on 12/29 and may have shifted by this article’s publication.
ReliaQuest Bowl (Tampa): #11 Alabama (9-3) -13.5 vs. Michigan (7-5): Tuesday 12:00 on ESPN

Remember Jaishawn Barham – the player that was spark between the viral South Carolina vs Maryland war? Well he’s currently at Michigan and he had a good year 65 tackles and sack at the linebacker position. Reports are that he learning towards returning to Michigan one his senior season where he will be moved to a defensive spot.
Alabama lost 14 players to the transfer portal thus far, including Justice Haynes and Damon Payne, both transferring to Michigan. The Wolverines have lost 17 players to the portal, the vast majority of them were backups. Michigan has been hit hard by bowl opt outs. They are down four running backs this week and several of their better players on defense, hence the two touchdown line favoring Alabama.
Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl (El Paso): Louisville (8-4) -2 vs. Washington (6-6)- 2:00 on CBS

Let’s take the time to acknowledge the beautiful Sun Bowl setting at the base of the Franklin Mountains about 300 yards from the Mexican border. Let’s also acknowledge that the ACC has yet to cover a spread in a bowl game. They are currently 1-9 this postseason with Syracuse beating a depleted Washington State team. So Far:
AAC 6-1
ACC 1-9
MAC 4-2
Big XII 4-3
Big Ten 4-3
SEC 5-3: Wins (Texas, Florida, Missouri, Arkansas and Vanderbilt) Loses (Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas A&M).
Sun Belt 3-3
CUSA 1-3
Mountain West 1-3
Independents are 2-0 and the Pac 2 is 0-1.
Cheez-It Citrus Bowl (Orlando): #15 South Carolina -10 vs. #20 Illinois (9-3)- 3:00 on ABC
(Photo by Jeff Blake/USA Today Sports)
Alan Cole has boots on the ground in Orlando to bring you all latest Cheese-It Citrus Bowl news. South Carolina has never played Illinois but is 6-2 against the Big Ten in bowl games all-time. The Cocks will look to break the “I” bowl curse as their two prior loses have come to Iowa and Indiana.
Kinder’s Texas Bowl (Houston): Baylor (8-4) -3.5 v. LSU (8-4)- 3:30 on ESPN
In case you were wondering: former Gamecock OL Sidney Fugar played significant snaps for Baylor this season. He played in all 12 games and made seven starts. All together he played 594 snaps. LSU has spent the month of December doing what they always – buying players. It won’t help them in this game, we’ll see what they look like next season. LSU isn’t the only throwing around money this offseason, but they are currently doing it better than anyone else per Rivals rankings.
Vrbo Fiesta Bowl: #6 Penn State (12-2) -11.5 vs. #3 Boise State (12-1)- 7:30 on ESPN
America’s favorite college running back, maybe overall player, gets a chance to show that Boise State belongs. These two schools have one common opponent: Oregon. The Ducks beat Penn State 45-37 on a neutral field and they beat Boise 37-34 in Eugene in September. Had the Broncos won that game – this committee might very well have had them as the #1 overall seed. Boise State has pulled rabbits out of their hat in the Fiesta Bowl before.
Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl: #5 Texas (12-2) -12.5 vs. #4 Arizona State (11-2)- Wednesday 1:00 on ESPN
Arizona State and Texas meet in Atlanta? The 12-team playoff formatting is still a work in progress. Arizona State has been a feel good story but they are largest underdog of the playoff. Here is some more game coverage from ASUDevils and Orangebloods two excellent sites in the Rivals network.
Rose Bowl: #8 Ohio State (11-2) -2.5 vs. #1 Oregon (13-0)- 5:00 on ESPN
If anyone included in the playoff has a gripe with the committee seeding – its Oregon. They are the only unbeaten team in the nation and they get the team with the NFL talent on their roster on a neutral field. If the Ducks can beat Ohio State for the second time, they get to go play Texas in Dallas. If Oregon wins this whole tournament, they will have earned it. It’s tough to beat a good team twice – Oregon already clipped Ohio State by a point in October. Should be the game of the playoffs thus far.
Allstate Sugar Bowl: #7 Notre Dame (12-1) +1.5 vs. #2 Georgia (11-2)- 8:45 on ESPN
Playoff game. Here are a few reports from InsideNDSports and UGASports. Check out those two sites for all the coverage of this game.
TaxSlayer Gator Bowl (Jacksonville): Duke (9-3) +17 vs. #14 Ole Miss (9-3)- Thursday 7:30 on ESPN
(Photo by Petre Thomas/USA Today Sports)
Any shot Duke had in this one went out the window when Maalik Murphy entered the portal. Jaxson Dart is playing for Ole Miss. While SEC fans usually pull for one another in bowl games – the extremely social media active Kiffin losing to a Duke as a three score favorite would make for good online fodder.

It’s been a month since the Illawarra Hawks last dropped a game, but Justin Tatum’s team have long memories.
Before the Hawks’ current five-game winning streak, it was the South East Melbourne Phoenix that took them down on November 30, a game Tatum says helped them learn a lot.
Now, two of the form teams in the competition face off again on New Year’s Eve, with plenty on the line.
“We’re excited about the matchup. It’s not about trying to get revenge or anything; it’s just about let’s keep getting better.”
The Phoenix have won four of their last five games and are looking to consolidate a top six spot.
With the likes of Nathan Sobey and Derrick Walton Jr back in peak form, they present a daunting challenge for Tatum and his men.
“They have a lot of skilled players, Sobey, Matt Hurt, Derrick Walton Jr, [Joe] Wieskamp, guys like that who can make threes, but also drive down the lane and hurt you in other ways,” he said.
“They’re a tough guard; we got to make sure we are on top of our game and focus on getting the ball in the hands of players who can’t hurt us as much.”
The Hawks are now three games clear on top of the NBL standings, with another win at home sure to consolidate their status as championship favourites.
It looms as a thrilling clash at the WIN Entertainment Centre, live on ESPN from 5.30pm AEDT on Tuesday.
