  • Kitzbühel: Canada’s Jack Crawford earns first career win at holy grail of ski racing | Skiing

Canada’s James Crawford scorched to a maiden World Cup victory in the prestigious Kitzbühel downhill on Saturday in a race thankfully spared the spate of serious crashes that marred the super-G.

Crawford, with just four podium places to his name in seven seasons on the circuit, laid down a near-perfect run to clock 1min 53.64sec on the challenging 3.3km-long Streif course on the Hahnenkamm mountain overlooking the upmarket Austrian resort.

Switzerland’s Alexis Monney took second, at 0.08sec, with another Canadian, Cameron Alexander, rounding out the podium a further 0.14sec adrift.

“Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Amazing stuff, supreme excellence!” boomed the slopeside commentator of Crawford’s run in front of tens of thousands of baying ski fans in warm, sunny conditions.

“Canadian cowboys! Oh my word, incredible run by Crawford, he’s the man to beat!”

Crawford, a surprise winner of world super-G gold in Courchevel in 2023 and Olympic combined bronze medallist in Beijing the year previously, held on to bag €100,000 ($104,800) for his victory and set himself up nicely ahead of the 4-16 February world championships in Saalbach.

In-form Swiss racer Marco Odermatt, who tops the overall and downhill standings, won Friday’s super-G, but could only finish sixth in the blue riband event, at 0.55sec, as just eight-tenths of a second separated the top 13 racers.

Starting with bib number 20, Crawford hit motorway-coasting speeds of 140kmh, negotiating sections that have an 85% gradient and 80m jumps, all the while battling crippling centrifugal forces.

The icy course, which has a stomach-churning vertiginous start that propels racers to 100km/h in five seconds, features falls, snakes and rolls through a wide variety of terrain.

For those reasons, victory in Kitzbühel is seen as the holy grail of alpine skiing, often compared to winning at Wimbledon or the Formula One race in Monaco.

There is no doubt that there is a voyeuristic, gladitorial draw for the estimated 90,000-strong crowd who flock in for the Kitzbühel weekend.

But while airhorns and whistles made for a deafening arena, flares lit and flags waving, there was none of the crash drama of Friday, which saw French veteran Alexis Pinturault among three evacuated by helicopter, with a serious knee injury.

The event draws a heady mix between champagne-drinking glitterati and young locals revelling in an alcohol-fuelled rite of passage.

Among onlookers on Saturday was former California governor and Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger and Swedish football great Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“This is amazing, it feels like a home stadium,” said Ibrahimovic, who played for a host of European clubs including Ajax, Juventus, AC and Inter Milan, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United in a storied career.

    “I wish I was a skier, but I can’t ski!”

The iconic ski resort of Kitzbühel, Austria, witnessed a historic moment as Canada’s Jack Crawford claimed his first career win at the prestigious Hahnenkamm downhill race. Known as the “holy grail of ski racing,” the Hahnenkamm is one of the most challenging and revered races on the World Cup circuit.

Crawford, a rising star in the world of alpine skiing, put on a stellar performance on the treacherous Streif course, navigating the steep, icy slopes and daunting jumps with skill and precision. The Canadian skier’s victory marks a significant milestone in his career and solidifies his status as a force to be reckoned with in the competitive world of ski racing.

The win in Kitzbühel is not only a personal triumph for Crawford but also a proud moment for Canadian skiing, as he becomes the first Canadian male skier to win at the Hahnenkamm in over a decade. His achievement serves as inspiration for aspiring young skiers across the country and showcases the talent and potential of Canada’s ski racing program.

As Crawford celebrates his well-deserved victory, fans and spectators around the world are left in awe of his incredible skill and determination. With this win under his belt, the future looks bright for Jack Crawford as he continues to make a name for himself on the international stage. Congratulations to the new champion of Kitzbühel!

  • Jack Crawford’s first World Cup win comes at the Super Bowl of ski racing

Jack Crawford made the most prestigious annual Alpine skiing race his first career World Cup victory, becoming the first Canadian in 42 years to win the Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbühel, Austria.

Crawford, the 2023 World super-G champion, skied from bib 20 into the lead by eight hundredths of a second over Swiss Alexis Monney. Another Canadian, Cameron Alexander, placed third.

“It’s just a huge milestone,” Crawford told Swiss broadcaster SRF. “Everybody dreams of winning this race as a downhiller.”

Crawford also won the 2022 Olympic combined bronze medal, but the 27-year-old had zero World Cup victories before this.

ALPINE SKIING: Full Results | Broadcast Schedule

Canada won four Kitzbühel downhills in the early 1980s with Ken Read (who was in attendance Saturday, as was Arnold Schwarzenegger and Zlatan Ibrahimovic), Steve Podborski and Todd Brooker in the era of the Crazy Canucks.

“A lot of those guys from back in the day, Ken Read has been a huge part in my bring up in skiing,” said Crawford, who as a youth hockey player in Toronto counted Connor McDavid as a teammate.

Europeans had won the last 24 Kitzbühel downhills since American Daron Rahlves’ victory in 2003.

“I’m still a little bit in shock,” Crawford said. “Hopefully tonight, when I’m lifting the Kitzbühel trophy overhead, then it’ll feel totally real.”

This is the first time two Canadians made the same men’s or women’s Alpine World Cup podium since 2012 (Jan Hudec, Eric Guay).

“Knowing that both of us are capable of it,” Crawford said of he and Alexander, “just to show that we can contend with the best teams in the world.”

The Kitzbühel World Cup continues Sunday with a men’s slalom, live on Peacock at 4:15 and 7:30 a.m. ET.

On the women’s World Cup, Federica Brignone won a downhill by one hundredth over fellow Italian Sofia Goggia in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on Saturday.

Lindsey Vonn, the 2010 Olympic gold medalist back this season from a five-year retirement, hit bumpy terrain late in her run, bouncing her wide of a gate for a DNF. Vonn was 16th fastest at her last intermediate split.

A women’s super-G is scheduled for Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Sunday in what is expected to be Vonn’s last race before the World Championships from Feb. 4-16 in Saalbach, Austria.

  • X Games Aspen opens with ski knuckle huck, won by Americans Alex Hall and Rell Harwood

Utah’s Rell Harwood smiles on the podium after winning the women’s ski knuckle huck final on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, during X Games Aspen at Buttermilk Ski Area.
    Austin Colbert/The Aspen Times

X Games Aspen 2025 opened with knuckle huck competitions on a cold Thursday evening under the lights at Buttermilk Ski Area. Leading the eight-women field was Rell Harwood of Park City, Utah, last year’s silver medalist. Alex Hall, another Park City product, was the men’s gold medalist.

Run in a 20-minute jam format, with as many runs as time permits, knuckle huck is judged on style and finesse, creativity, originality, and overall impression. Competitors use the “knuckle” of the bottom jump of the slopestyle course as the platform for their tricks.

“I pop off my nose and I do two-and-a-half spins and I land a switch,” she said in describing her favorite of the four runs. “It’s really fun to do.”

Her “butters” — where a skier puts pressure on tips of their skis, the tails then come off the ground, allowing them to spin on the tip of their skis — were strong.

Tereza Korabova from the Czech Republic won silver with creative runs that featured a  nose butter 360 and a hand drag with a flip. The women’s bronze X Games medal went to Anni Karava from Finland, whose second run featured a massive 720.

Karava said she had few expectations.

“I just went into it to have fun, and that’s what I did,” she said. “This is just so sick.”

Utah’s Alex Hall is interviewed on the podium after winning men’s ski knuckle huck on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, during Day 1 of X Games Aspen at Buttermilk Ski Area.

In winning his 12th X Games medal – six of which are gold — Hall put on a style clinic, executing a switch move with a hand movement that his coach Hunter Hess dubbed a “turtle roll slide.” Hall, who is competing in four events this weekend, followed that with a huge 1080.

“I really liked my last trick just because I went big and it was scary, but I landed, so it was fun,” he said.

Finishing second was Matej Svancer from Austria.

“I felt more nervous because I’ve never done any of the four tricks today,” he said.

Near the end of the men’s knuckle huck jam session, Juho Saastamoinen from Finland moved into third, cementing his podium finish with a unique ballet skiing move.

This past weekend, the X Games Aspen kicked off with a bang as ski knuckle huck took center stage. The event, which showcases skiers launching off a specially designed knuckle feature and performing their best tricks, saw Americans Alex Hall and Rell Harwood come out on top.

Hall, known for his stylish and technical tricks, wowed the crowd with his smooth execution and impressive airtime. Harwood, on the other hand, brought a creative flair to the competition with his unique trick selection and fearless approach.

The two Americans battled it out against a stacked field of international competitors, but ultimately it was Hall and Harwood who stole the show and took home the gold.

With the ski knuckle huck setting the tone for the rest of the X Games Aspen, fans can look forward to more thrilling action and jaw-dropping performances in the days to come. Stay tuned for more updates and highlights from this exciting event!

  • Olympic ski champion Petra Vlhova to miss world championships after setbacks with long-term injury | Sports

Olympic slalom champion Petra Vlhova will miss the Alpine skiing world championships next month after a setback in her recovery from a knee injury and is already focusing on the 2026 Winter Games, her team said Monday.

Vlhova has been Mikaela Shiffrin’s main rival in slalom for the past decade. However, Shiffrin’s participation at the worlds in Saalbach, Austria, is also in doubt as the American has yet to make her return from abdominal surgery following a crash in November.
