  • Kitzbühel: Canada’s Jack Crawford earns first career win at holy grail of ski racing | Skiing

Canada’s James Crawford scorched to a maiden World Cup victory in the prestigious Kitzbühel downhill on Saturday in a race thankfully spared the spate of serious crashes that marred the super-G.

Crawford, with just four podium places to his name in seven seasons on the circuit, laid down a near-perfect run to clock 1min 53.64sec on the challenging 3.3km-long Streif course on the Hahnenkamm mountain overlooking the upmarket Austrian resort.

Switzerland’s Alexis Monney took second, at 0.08sec, with another Canadian, Cameron Alexander, rounding out the podium a further 0.14sec adrift.

“Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Amazing stuff, supreme excellence!” boomed the slopeside commentator of Crawford’s run in front of tens of thousands of baying ski fans in warm, sunny conditions.

“Canadian cowboys! Oh my word, incredible run by Crawford, he’s the man to beat!”

Crawford, a surprise winner of world super-G gold in Courchevel in 2023 and Olympic combined bronze medallist in Beijing the year previously, held on to bag €100,000 ($104,800) for his victory and set himself up nicely ahead of the 4-16 February world championships in Saalbach.

In-form Swiss racer Marco Odermatt, who tops the overall and downhill standings, won Friday’s super-G, but could only finish sixth in the blue riband event, at 0.55sec, as just eight-tenths of a second separated the top 13 racers.

Starting with bib number 20, Crawford hit motorway-coasting speeds of 140kmh, negotiating sections that have an 85% gradient and 80m jumps, all the while battling crippling centrifugal forces.

The icy course, which has a stomach-churning vertiginous start that propels racers to 100km/h in five seconds, features falls, snakes and rolls through a wide variety of terrain.

For those reasons, victory in Kitzbühel is seen as the holy grail of alpine skiing, often compared to winning at Wimbledon or the Formula One race in Monaco.

There is no doubt that there is a voyeuristic, gladitorial draw for the estimated 90,000-strong crowd who flock in for the Kitzbühel weekend.

But while airhorns and whistles made for a deafening arena, flares lit and flags waving, there was none of the crash drama of Friday, which saw French veteran Alexis Pinturault among three evacuated by helicopter, with a serious knee injury.

The event draws a heady mix between champagne-drinking glitterati and young locals revelling in an alcohol-fuelled rite of passage.

Among onlookers on Saturday was former California governor and Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger and Swedish football great Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“This is amazing, it feels like a home stadium,” said Ibrahimovic, who played for a host of European clubs including Ajax, Juventus, AC and Inter Milan, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United in a storied career.

    “I wish I was a skier, but I can’t ski!”

The iconic ski resort of Kitzbühel, Austria, witnessed a historic moment as Canada’s Jack Crawford claimed his first career win at the prestigious Hahnenkamm downhill race. Known as the “holy grail of ski racing,” the Hahnenkamm is one of the most challenging and revered races on the World Cup circuit.

Crawford, a rising star in the world of alpine skiing, put on a stellar performance on the treacherous Streif course, navigating the steep, icy slopes and daunting jumps with skill and precision. The Canadian skier’s victory marks a significant milestone in his career and solidifies his status as a force to be reckoned with in the competitive world of ski racing.

The win in Kitzbühel is not only a personal triumph for Crawford but also a proud moment for Canadian skiing, as he becomes the first Canadian male skier to win at the Hahnenkamm in over a decade. His achievement serves as inspiration for aspiring young skiers across the country and showcases the talent and potential of Canada’s ski racing program.

As Crawford celebrates his well-deserved victory, fans and spectators around the world are left in awe of his incredible skill and determination. With this win under his belt, the future looks bright for Jack Crawford as he continues to make a name for himself on the international stage. Congratulations to the new champion of Kitzbühel!

  • Petra Vlhova to miss World Alpine Skiing Championships

Olympic slalom champion Petra Vlhova will miss next month’s World Alpine Skiing Championships and has now been sidelined due to injury for more than one year.

Vlhova, a 29-year-old from Slovakia, fell in a race last Jan. 20, tearing at least one right knee ligament and then undergoing surgery.

“Petra’s knee rehabilitation is finally on the right track, with encouraging progress every day,” coach Mauro Pini said, according to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation. “Unfortunately, the setbacks she faced in December and January have made it impossible for her to participate in the World Championships in Saalbach. We had hoped she could compete for medals, but that won’t happen this time. However, this marks a new chapter for Petra, with her focus already shifting to the Winter Olympics in Cortina 2026.”

Vlhova has been Mikaela Shiffrin’s primary rival in the slalom for the last several years.

In 68 World Cup slaloms between March 2017 and November 2024, Shiffrin won 38, Vlhova won 21 and the rest of the world won nine.

Shiffrin is currently sidelined indefinitely after falling in a Nov. 30 giant slalom, sustaining a puncture wound in the right side of her abdomen and severe muscle trauma.

The last four World Cup slaloms were held without Vlhova and Shiffrin. Swiss Camille Rast won two, and Croatian Zrinka Ljutic won two.

The World Cup continues with a giant slalom on Tuesday in Kronplatz, Italy.

How to watch the world’s best Alpine skiers on NBC Sports and Peacock.

Petra Vlhova, the reigning overall World Cup champion in alpine skiing, has announced that she will miss the upcoming World Alpine Skiing Championships due to a knee injury.

Vlhova, who hails from Slovakia, sustained the injury while training in Austria earlier this month. Despite her best efforts to recover in time for the championships, Vlhova and her team have made the difficult decision to prioritize her long-term health and skip the event.

The absence of Vlhova, who is known for her impressive technical skills and fierce competitiveness, will undoubtedly be felt at the championships. Fans and fellow competitors alike will miss seeing her take on the challenging courses and fierce competition.

We wish Petra Vlhova a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back on the slopes in the near future. In the meantime, we will be cheering on all the athletes competing at the World Alpine Skiing Championships as they showcase their talents and push themselves to new heights.

  • Lindsey Vonn: American on skiing comeback which has ‘exceeded’ her expectations and could lead to Olympics

After quitting the sport, Vonn focused on her foundation and business as well as learning to flyboard, wakeboard and play tennis.

But, still experiencing pain, she made a decision to have the operation on her right knee.

“I was doing more therapy in retirement than I was when I was racing,” Vonn explained.

“I did it for my own longevity, for my own wellbeing. That was my motivation – to be pain-free and to live the life I tried to build for myself.”

The surgery went well and Vonn was loving her life, but something was missing. It was the buzz of skiing fast again.

“Life as a ski racer is pretty simple,” she said. “You work hard, you do the right thing, and when you’re in the start gate you just want to go fast. I missed that.”

Vonn asked her surgeon how far she could push her knee and to what level could she contemplate competing again.

“He told me it was up to me,” Vonn said. “He said if it doesn’t hurt and it feels good, the titanium knee is not going anywhere.

“There’s other risk factors, obviously. I have other ligaments, it’s like a normal knee. “Things can go wrong, but the titanium knee component is indestructible.”

Vonn spoke about her return to Cortina, seven years after the last of her record 12 World Cup wins on the iconic course, before the weekend’s racing.

“I’m really excited to be back here,” she said.

“I’ve been watching videos of the past races. They have been so meaningful to my life. It means a lot to me. I’m just out here, having fun.”

The course tantalisingly also plays host to the women’s races at the 2026 Winter Olympics which are only a year away.

Vonn is not looking too far ahead for what would be a fifth Winter Games and almost a quarter of a century since her first in 2002.

“I don’t think this weekend’s results mean anything for the next Olympics,” she said.

“It [Olympics] depends on whether I can stay healthy, figure out my equipment, can I maintain this level of skiing for another year? I don’t know the answer to those questions.

“I’m going to enjoy this weekend as if it’s the last time I ski here and we’ll see what every day brings.”

If Vonn was able to record a World Cup win in the future, she would comfortably become the oldest man or woman to do so.

“My new knee has given me a second chance. Life is short so I’m going to take it,” she added.

Lindsey Vonn: American skiing superstar on comeback trail

After a series of setbacks and injuries, Lindsey Vonn is back on the slopes and better than ever. The American skier has exceeded all expectations with her recent performances, leading many to believe that she could be on track for a triumphant return to the Olympics.

Vonn, who has won multiple Olympic medals and World Cup titles, has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including a devastating knee injury that threatened to end her career. However, she has shown incredible resilience and determination, pushing herself to new heights and proving that she still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

With the Winter Olympics just around the corner, Vonn’s impressive comeback has put her in contention for a spot on the US ski team. If she continues to ski at this level, there is no doubt that she will be a force to be reckoned with on the slopes in Beijing.

Fans and fellow skiers alike are eagerly anticipating Vonn’s next race, as she continues to defy the odds and prove that she is truly one of the greatest skiers of all time. Stay tuned for more updates on Lindsey Vonn’s incredible journey back to the top of the skiing world.

Sydney Sweeney rocks bikini while jet skiing with fiancé

Sydney Sweeney brought the heat in a brown bikini while soaking up the sun with her fiancé, Jonathan Davino, on Monday.

The “Anyone But You” star and the film producer were photographed jet skiing near her $13.5 million waterfront Florida mansion.

Sweeney accessorized with black sunglasses and threw on a black life jacket before riding off.

The actress, 27, has been spotted relaxing at her multimillion-dollar estate since buying it for $4.5 million less than the listed price in June.

The 7,720-square-foot luxury abode is about 30 minutes from Key West and features an infinity pool with a bar and private boat launch.

It is unclear whether Sweeney bought the home alone or with Davino, 41, whom she has been dating since 2018 and got engaged to in 2022.

Over the summer, the “Euphoria” star celebrated her massive purchase by riding an inflatable banana with a friend while being pulled by a jet ski.

Sweeney was also seen getting her tan on while taking a dip in her massive pool earlier this month.

She was later forced to defend herself from body-shaming trolls who critiqued her figure via social media.

The Emmy nominee responded to the critics by sharing a video of cyberbullies labeling her “frumpy,” “an average chunky Yankee girl” and “too pale.”

Sweeney then transitioned the video to show clips of herself preparing for her role as Christy Martin in the boxer’s biopic.

The clips showed the “White Lotus” alum bulking up for the project by doing cable pull-ups, flipping tires and cardio boxing drills.

She let the post do the talking and left the caption blank.

Sweeney was met with support from fellow actors and fans, with one writing, “They only hate you because you’re a better individual than themselves. Keep being amazing, we love the s–t outta you.”

In October, the “Madame Web” star revealed she was filming the David Michôd-directed biopic after paparazzi photographed her in costume.

“Over the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman – a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.

Sydney Sweeney Shows Off Toned Physique in Bikini While Jet Skiing with Fiancé

Actress Sydney Sweeney was spotted looking stunning as she hit the waves on a jet ski with her fiancé in tow. The Euphoria star flaunted her fit figure in a colorful bikini, showcasing her toned abs and sun-kissed skin.

Sweeney seemed to be having a blast as she zipped around the water, her laughter echoing across the ocean. Her fiancé looked equally thrilled, his arms wrapped tightly around her waist as they sped across the water.

The couple’s chemistry was undeniable, with Sweeney flashing a bright smile as she leaned back against her fiancé, the wind tousling her hair. It was clear that they were enjoying every moment of their water adventure together.

Fans couldn’t help but gush over the pair, with many commenting on how adorable they looked and how happy Sweeney appeared. It was a picture-perfect moment that captured the essence of summer fun and love.

Sweeney’s bikini look was a hit, with many admirers praising her confidence and killer physique. It’s no wonder she’s one of Hollywood’s rising stars, with both talent and beauty to spare.

Overall, it was a day of sun, sea, and smiles for Sydney Sweeney and her fiancé, a memory they’ll surely cherish for years to come. And if this jet ski outing was any indication, their future together looks bright indeed.
