  • Patrick Swayze’s “Chippendales” SNL Sketch Made Chris Farley a Star

In the weeks leading up to February 16’s three-hour 50th anniversary celebration on NBC, the team behind Saturday Night Live has selected one sketch from every single season — 50 seasons in 50 days — to reflect the show’s rich legacy across five decades. Presenting the sketch chosen to represent Season 16: “Chippendales Audition” starring Host Patrick Swayze and Season 16 cast members Chris Farley, Kevin Nealon, Mike Myers, and Jan Hooks.

    How to Watch

Watch Saturday Night Live Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c on NBC and Peacock, streaming next day on Peacock.

Chris Farley was a tour de force whirlwind of comedic talent during his five seasons as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, and the star of many unforgettable sketches.

Case in point: “Chippendales Audition,” starring Chris Farley and October 27, 1990, Host Patrick Swayze, fresh off of starring in the 1990 box office hit Ghost. The two played hopeful dancers competing to be the newest member of the infamous mens’ dance troupe.

Incredibly, “Chippendales Audition” was only Farley’s fourth sketch — and the very first one that he starred in.

RELATED: Chris Farley’s “Explosively Funny” in SNL’s “Matt Foley: Van Down by the River”

SNL‘s “Chippendales” sketch was written by Jim Downey

“Chippendales” was written by Jim Downey, a longtime SNL writer and sometime sketch performer responsible for sketches like “First Citywide Change Bank.”

The judges panel (played by Season 16 cast members Kevin Nealon, Mike Myers, and Jan Hooks) exposit that the two dancers — Adrian (Patrick Swayze) and Barney (Chris Farley) — have already gone through a five hour audition and three callbacks, but they only have the budget to hire one of them.

Adrian and Barney are called out onstage to show off their moves, dancing to “Working for the Weekend” by Loverboy. Eventually ripping off their shirts, they mesmerize the judges with hip thrusts, spins, and head-banging — all while still sporting Chippendales’ signature bowties, of course.

The judges unsurprisingly decide to hire Adrian — but they admit that it was a close call between the two, despite the dancers’ obvious physical differences.

Lorne Michaels called Chris Farley “an athlete”

The sketch premiered almost 35 years ago, but it is still regarded as one of the show’s most iconic, with more than 9.7 million views on SNL‘s YouTube. In The Chris Farley Show, a 2009 oral history of Farley’s life produced by Tanner Colby and and Chris Farley’s brother Tom Farley Jr., SNL writer Robert Smigel said (quotes via The Ringer), “I’d say it’s one of the funniest sketches in the history of the show.”

RELATED: Mark Your Calendar for These SNL 50 Anniversary Events, Specials, and Episodes

Farley died in 1997, and in a 1998 Rolling Stone posthumous feature about Farley, SNL creator Lorne Michaels called him “an athlete.”

“He knew how to use his body,” Michaels explained. “He was incredibly funny with it, and, as they say in football, he could play hurt.”

Smigel also compared Farley’s gifts to those of an athlete. In an April 2021 interview on The Howard Stern Show, the longtime SNL writer said “What was amazing about the sketch and what people forget is that Farley was incredibly nimble.”

“He was an athlete, and he danced incredibly well in that sketch, actually. And he had this fantastic energy. And in a way, it was like a very empowering sketch. I think that’s what people felt the first time they watched it, like, ‘Look at this guy go and be completely proud, just unashamed and going for it,” Smigel told Howard Stern when he brought up “Chippendale’s Audition.”

“He’s an amazing physical comedian! He was the most explosively funny person,” Smigel continued. “I think most people who worked [at SNL] at that time would agree with that.”

Mike Myers knew “a star was born” during “Chippendales Audition” rehearsal

In The Chris Farley Show oral history, Nealon admitted that it was hard to keep a straight face while Farley dance in the sketch.

“I played one of the judges, and my experience was the same as anyone who’s seen it on television,” recalled Nealon. “I can’t even think of the word to describe it. Incredulous, maybe? I did everything I could to keep a straight face.”

As for Downey, he admitted, “We didn’t know it was going to be as popular as it was. You never do. In read-through Chris is just sitting fully-clothed at the table while Lorne reads stage directions. We didn’t know until he did it at dress,” while Myers said, “I knew in rehearsal that a star was born.”

“Chippendales Audition” was a star-making moment for the new SNL cast member.

What is the song in the SNL “Chippendales Audition” sketch?

Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley dance to “Working for the Weekend” by Loverboy. The song was originally released in 1981.

In the history of Saturday Night Live, there have been countless memorable sketches and characters that have left a lasting impact on audiences. One such sketch that helped launch a comedic career is Patrick Swayze’s “Chippendales” sketch, which made Chris Farley a star.

In the sketch, Swayze and Farley play auditioning dancers for the Chippendales male strip club. Swayze, known for his suave and sexy persona, effortlessly shows off his dance moves and charm. Farley, on the other hand, is the complete opposite – he is overweight, awkward, and lacking in dance skills. However, Farley’s enthusiasm and comedic timing steal the show, as he hilariously gyrates and shakes his way into the audience’s hearts.

The juxtaposition of Swayze’s smooth moves and Farley’s clumsy antics is pure comedic gold. Farley’s fearless physical comedy and willingness to make a fool of himself endeared him to viewers, and the sketch instantly became a fan-favorite. It showcased Farley’s ability to make people laugh with his larger-than-life personality and impeccable timing.

The success of the “Chippendales” sketch helped propel Farley to stardom on SNL and beyond. He went on to create iconic characters like motivational speaker Matt Foley and “The Chris Farley Show” host, solidifying his status as a comedy legend. Tragically, Farley’s career was cut short when he passed away in 1997, but his impact on the world of comedy lives on.

So, the next time you watch the “Chippendales” sketch, remember that it was not only a hilarious moment in SNL history but also the moment that made Chris Farley a star.

  • ‘SNL’ season 50 schedule: Is ‘Saturday Night Live’ new tonight?

Season 50 of “Saturday Night Live” has been full of memorable moments with hosts including Dave Chappelle, Ariana Grande, and Charli XCX. But who will be the next star to assume hosting duties?

Timothée Chalamet’s double duty performance during the Saturday, Jan. 25, episode marked SNL’s final episode before a short break. There will be no new episode of “SNL” on Saturday, Feb. 1, or Saturday, Feb. 8, per NBC New York.

The outlet reported that “SNL” will return with a new episode on Saturday, Feb. 15, one day before the three-hour “Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special” is set to air.

The sketch comedy series has not yet announced who will be hosting the Feb. 15 show. But in the nostalgic spirit of the Sunday, Feb. 16, anniversary special, it seems likely that the next host will be an “SNL” alum or a fan-favorite host who has appeared on the show multiple times.

Leading up to the anniversary special, the official “SNL” Instagram page has been releasing clips from past seasons. A documentary celebrating the show’s musical guests, “Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music”, also premiered on NBC on Monday, Jan. 27.

The doc, which was directed by Questlove and Oz Rodriguez, features interviews with some of SNL’s most iconic musical guests, including Jack White, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Miley Cyrus, Kacey Musgraves, Debby Harry, and Mick Jagger.

During an interview with Deadline published on Monday, Jan. 27, Questlove said he spent a year and a half watching old “SNL” episodes and taking notes to make the documentary. Elswhere in the interview, he gushed about “SNL” creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels.

“His love for the show is deep, and the stories that he has are deeper,” Questlove said. “30 years into my career … it’s almost very easy to be cynical and kind of old hat and be grumpy about it. [Lorne’s] not that at all, he’s very much enthusiastic about it. Knows what he has, knows what he created, shares stories with you. You got to love a person that is in it and of it.”

“Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music” is available to stream on Peacock.

  • Justin Timberlake On Convincing Beyoncé To Do ‘Single Ladies’ SNL’ Bit

A big part of the job at Saturday Night Live in the week leading up to showtime is convincing that week’s host or musical guest to appear in sketches that sometimes sound bizarre at best, or potentially disastrous at worst. That was the dilemma frequent SNL guest Justin Timberlake found himself in November 2008 when cast member Andy Samberg hit him up to see if he was in town to hop in on a bit that castmate Bobby Moynihan had cooked up.

“He said Bobby Moynihan has this great idea for a sketch about you, me, and him being Beyoncé’s background dancers that never made the cut,” Timberlake explained in the three-hour doc Ladies & Gentleman… 50 Years of SNL Music, which aired on NBC on Monday night (Jan. 27). “I was like ‘full leotard’? And he’s like, ‘yeah.’ I was like, ‘This is too funny. We have to do this.’”

Here’s the thing: the three guys were totally down, but convincing Queen Bey to get super silly with them was going to be another matter entirely. In the exhaustive look at the show’s musical history co-directed by Oscar-winning Roots drummer Questlove, current SNL star Bowen Yang explained that “when you pitch a sketch that the musical guest is involved in potentially it can always go wrong.”

And, according to JT, at first Beyoncé was not into it. At all.

“She was very polite about it, but she was very hesitant. And when I say hesitant, I mean like, she was not having it,” Timberlake said. “I’m like: Does she know how funny this is gonna be? How beloved this whole moment will be?” Determined to commit to the bit, Timberlake decided that he had to show his fellow pop superstar how far he was willing to go to convince her.

“I put the leotard and the heels and the hose on and everything, and put a robe on,” he said. “I walked and knocked on her door, I threw the robe down and put my hands on my hips and she was like, ‘No you didn’t!’” Long story short, Bey said yea and the rest is SNL history.

In the final sketch (which is not officially available on YouTube), host Paul Rudd plays the “Single Ladies” video director introducing the singer to her new backup dancers, who she is nervous about.

“Oh look, don’t worry about the other dancers, B-Town,” Rudd tells her. “I hand-picked them myself, these guys are pros.” The three men then enter in all their black leotard, white tights and black heels regalia, assuring Bey that they are definitely warmed up, “like biscuits,” Moynihan says, with Timberlake adding the unhelpful second helping, “yeah, dance biscuits!”

Smash cut to the trio gyrating impertinently on, around and at Beyoncé and the singer repeatedly stopping filming until Rudd finally admits that they are his stepsons, who his wife said he had to spend more time with. “Aww, I didn’t know these were your sons,” Beyoncé says. “That’s very noble of you.”

“So you’ll let them be in your music video?” Rudd asks. “Hell no,” Bey replies.

Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music is available to stream now on Peacock.

In a recent interview, Justin Timberlake revealed how he convinced Beyoncé to do the iconic “Single Ladies” sketch on Saturday Night Live. Timberlake, who was hosting the show at the time, knew that Beyoncé was hesitant about doing comedic sketches, but he managed to persuade her by showcasing his own impressive dance moves and assuring her that they would have a blast on stage together.

The sketch, which featured Timberlake and Beyoncé in leotards, dancing to the hit song “Single Ladies,” became an instant classic and solidified Timberlake’s reputation as a talented comedic actor. Fans of both artists were thrilled to see them collaborate in such a fun and unexpected way.

It just goes to show that sometimes, all it takes is a little friendly persuasion and a shared love of music and dance to create something truly memorable. Cheers to Justin Timberlake for his persuasive skills and to Beyoncé for being a good sport and delivering a performance that will go down in SNL history.

  • Justin Timberlake Dressed Up Like Beyoncé to Convince Her to Do 2008 SNL Sketch

Justin Timberlake says that, in order to convince Beyoncé to participate in a now-legendary 2008 sketch on Saturday Night Live, he had to dress up like the superstar, leotard and all.

The sketch, which aired on the Nov. 18, 2008, episode hosted by Paul Rudd, depicted three “backup dancers,” played by Timberlake and SNL cast members Andy Samberg and Bobby Moynihan.

In the bit, Rudd played the director of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” music video, telling her he “hand-picked” the backup dancers, whom she hadn’t yet met.

“Oh look, don’t worry about the other dancers, B-Town,” Rudd says in the sketch. “These guys are pros.”

Timberlake, Samberg and Moynihan then make their entrance, each clad in a black leotard with tights and high heels.

“Hiiii, we’re the dancers,” they say, before the music is queued up and the routine begins.

As the song starts, Beyoncé begins her now-iconic dance, while the three men try to keep up.

Eventually, it comes to light that the men are Rudd’s stepsons, with his character saying, “My wife said I need to spend more time with them.”

The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now!

Timberlake, who has hosted SNL five times, told the story of how the sketch came to be in Questlove’s new documentary Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Musicwhich premiered on NBC on Jan. 27 and is streaming now on Peacock.

According to Timberlake, it was Moynihan who had the idea for the sketch, which would take place while Rudd hosted and Beyoncé served as musical guest.

Timberlake had no plans to appear in the episode, until friend Samberg sent him a text, asking if he’d participate.

“He said Bobby Moynihan has this great idea for a sketch about you, me and him being Beyoncé’s background dancers that never made the cut,” Timberlake recounts in the documentary. “I was like ‘Full leotard’? And he’s like, ‘Yeah.’ I was like, ‘This is too funny. We have to do this.’ “

But Beyoncé herself wasn’t keen on the idea.

“She was very polite about it, but she was very hesitant. And when I say hesitant, I mean like, she was not having it,” Timberlake says. “I’m like: Does she know how funny this is gonna be? How beloved this whole moment will be?”

So, in a bid to convince her, Timberlake dressed up in the costume he and the others would be wearing.

“I put the leotard and the heels and the hose on and everything, and put a robe on,” he says. “I walked and knocked on her door, I threw the robe down and put my hands on my hips and she was like, ‘No you didn’t!’ ”

Speaking to David Spade and Dana Carvey on their Fly in the Wall podcast in 2024, Samberg said they encouraged Timberlake to be the one to ask her because “he’s very famous [and] she’s very famous so that would go better. And also it’s him being like, ‘I’m going to be in a leotard, we’re celebrating you.’ But she was delightful. She is such a sweet-hearted person, in my limited interaction with her. But that one was fun because we were like, there’s no way people are going to be mad at this.”

The rest, as they say, is history, with the sketch going on to delight audiences and become one of the most well-known to feature a musical guest.

Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music is available now on Peacock.

Justin Timberlake surprised fans this past weekend by dressing up as Beyoncé in an attempt to convince her to join him for a throwback sketch on Saturday Night Live. The sketch in question? The infamous “Single Ladies” dance routine from 2008.

In a hilarious Instagram post, Timberlake shared a photo of himself in full Beyoncé attire, complete with a sparkly bodysuit and long blonde wig. He captioned the post, “Just trying to convince Queen B to join me for a little SNL throwback. Who’s in?”

Fans went wild over the post, with many commenting that they would love to see Beyoncé and Timberlake recreate the iconic sketch. The pair famously performed the “Single Ladies” routine on SNL over a decade ago, and fans have been clamoring for a reunion ever since.

While it’s uncertain if Beyoncé will agree to Timberlake’s plea, one thing is for sure – fans would love to see these two superstars come together once again for a hilarious and unforgettable performance. Here’s hoping Beyoncé says yes!

  • Dave Grohl Reveals Nirvana’s ‘SNL’ Debut Nearly Ended In ‘Titanic-Level Disaster’

Nirvana’s debut “Saturday Night Live” performance was a perfect introduction to the grunge genre for untold viewers watching live on Jan. 11, 1992, but it nearly ended in a “Titanic-level disaster,” drummer Dave Grohl revealed in a new documentary Monday.

Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music,” directed by Oscar-winning documentarian Questlove of The Roots, chronicles the triumphs, pranks and accidents that have befallen musical guests on the iconic NBC show — with Nirvana’s debut arguably near the top.

Grohl recalled being “absolutely fucking terrified” when they arrived at “SNL” four months after their debut studio album, “Nevermind,” was released, and said in “50 Years” that he got even more nervous when the crew counted them down for their live performance.

“The room gets dead silent,” the Foo Fighters frontman said. “Your heart is racing and you’re thinking, ‘Oh my God, I’m gonna faint, I’m gonna puke on live television, I’m gonna die.’ And, typically, what happens if I get nervous, I beat the shit out of the drums twice as hard.”

While that performance anxiety certainly helped him launch into “Smells Like Teen Spirit” with a vengeance when host Rob Morrow introduced the band, Grohl revealed that he “snapped my snare stick in half” when they were “only like 20 seconds into the song.”

Frontman Kurt Cobain gave no sign of noticing while belting out his lyrics.

“I was hitting the drums 10 times harder than I’ve ever hit them before in my life,” Grohl admitted in the documentary. “There was one break right before the first drum roll, I think, where I grabbed another stick really quick and busted into it.”

He continued, “I mean, it was so close to being, like, ‘Titanic’-level disaster.”

Grohl, seen here in 2019, has since formed the Grammy-winning Foo Fighters.

The performance was ultimately anything but, as then-“SNL” cast member Adam Sandler testified in the documentary: “People were talking about it, getting more calls than you ever got before from friends in my hometown, just like, ‘What’s he like? What’s Kurt like?’”

Cobain’s substance abuse issues eventually contributed to his suicide on April 5, 1994. Nirvana performed on “SNL” one last time on Sept. 25, 1993, months before Cobain died at the age of 27.

Dave Grohl, former drummer of Nirvana and current frontman of the Foo Fighters, recently opened up about the band’s iconic debut on Saturday Night Live, revealing that it nearly ended in a “Titanic-level disaster.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Grohl recalled the nerves and excitement leading up to Nirvana’s appearance on the late-night sketch comedy show in 1992. The band was already riding high on the success of their hit album “Nevermind,” and the pressure was on to deliver a memorable performance.

However, things took a turn for the worse when, just moments before going on stage, Grohl realized that his drum set had been set up incorrectly. As he frantically tried to reposition the drums, he accidentally knocked over a cymbal, causing a loud crash that could be heard throughout the studio.

“I thought, ‘This is it, we’re done for,’” Grohl recalled. “It felt like the whole world was watching us fail in real-time.”

Despite the mishap, Nirvana went on to deliver a stellar performance, playing their hits “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Territorial Pissings” with raw energy and intensity. The band’s electrifying set not only won over the audience but also solidified their status as one of the most iconic rock bands of the 90s.

Looking back on that fateful night, Grohl can now laugh about the incident, joking that it was just another “rock ‘n’ roll moment” in Nirvana’s tumultuous career. And while the SNL debut may have been a close call, it ultimately helped propel the band to even greater heights.

As Grohl put it, “It was chaos, but it was beautiful chaos.” And for fans of Nirvana, that chaotic energy is what made the band so special and unforgettable.

  • Nirvana’s First ‘SNL’ Appearance Was Nearly a ‘Titanic-Level Disaster’

There’s an insane amount of competition for the best-ever musical performance on Saturday Night Live. But if we crowned an all-time champ for best SNL mid-week promo by a musical guest, the winner has to be Nirvana. Their profoundly awkward team-up with NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley was one for the ages.

Nirvana was a seasoned SNL veteran by the time the group played the 1993 season premiere with Barkley. But when the band appeared for the first time in January 1992, the result was almost a “Titanic-level disaster,” according to drummer Dave Grohl in the new documentary Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music. The explanation for why the appearance was so harrowing is simple: Pure fear.

“I was absolutely fucking terrified,” Grohl admitted.

Nirvana wasn’t yet a huge name when the band made its SNL debut — in fact, Lorne Michaels had never heard of them. That changed when producer David Geffen called in late 1991 to persuade Michaels to book the group. “He said, ‘I don’t know what’s happening, but last week they sold 60,000 records and this week, they sold 140,000. So something’s happening.”

Grohl reminisced about the band’s first appearance, including the commercial break before their first song when guitars, drums and speakers were given a last-minute check. Then everyone was instructed to get quiet so host Rob Morrow could deliver his introduction: “Ladies and gentlemen… Nirvana.”

“The room gets dead silent,” Grohl remembered. “Your heart is racing, and you’re thinking, ‘Oh my God, I’m gonna faint. I’m gonna puke on live television. I’m gonna die.’”

Whenever Grohl was nervous about a performance, “I beat the shit out of the drums, twice as hard,” he confessed. That adrenaline response was amped up when the band launched into “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on SNL. “I was hitting the drums 10 times harder than I’ve ever hit them before in my life. By the first verse, I had snapped my snare stick in half. Which is not good.”

General rule of thumb for rock and roll: You need sticks to play the drums. And Grohl had destroyed one of his only 20 seconds into the song.

“There was one break right before the first drum roll, I think, where I grabbed another stick really quick and busted into it,” Grohl said. “It was so close to being, like, Titanic-level disaster.”

Instead, the performance helped launch Nirvana into superstardom. While Michaels may never have heard of the band, Adam Sandler’s Gen X friends sure had. He was “getting more calls than you ever got before from friends in my hometown, just like, ‘What’s he like? What’s Kurt like?’”

Jimmy Fallon never forgot it either. “Three people making that sound,” he marveled. “They probably blew so many speakers.”

    And at least one drumstick.

Nirvana’s First ‘SNL’ Appearance Was Nearly a ‘Titanic-Level Disaster’

In 1992, grunge rock band Nirvana made their debut on Saturday Night Live, but what should have been a triumphant moment nearly turned into a disaster of epic proportions. The band, led by the late Kurt Cobain, was set to perform two songs live on the show, but things quickly spiraled out of control.

According to reports from the time, tensions were running high backstage as the band members clashed with SNL producers over various issues. Cobain was reportedly unhappy with the show’s sound engineers, while drummer Dave Grohl was struggling with a broken drum kit. To make matters worse, bassist Krist Novoselic accidentally hit himself in the head with his own bass during the band’s first song.

Despite these setbacks, Nirvana managed to push through and deliver a memorable performance that would go down in rock history. The band’s raw energy and rebellious spirit captivated audiences, and their SNL appearance helped solidify their status as one of the most influential bands of the 90s.

Looking back on the experience, it’s clear that Nirvana’s first SNL appearance was a near-disaster, but the band’s resilience and talent ultimately saved the day. As Cobain famously said, “It’s better to burn out than to fade away,” and Nirvana certainly burned bright that night on the SNL stage.

  • Dave Grohl recalls mishap in Nirvana’s first ‘SNL’ performance

Dave Grohl‘s nerves nearly led to a “Titanic-level disaster” the first time Nirvana played Saturday Night Live.

“I was absolutely f—ing terrified,” the legendary grunge band’s drummer admitted in the new documentary Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music. “The room gets dead silent. Your heart is racing and you’re thinking, ‘Oh my God, I’m gonna faint. I’m gonna puke on live television. I’m gonna die.’”

While Grohl made it through the live performance of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” alongside bandmates Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic on the Jan. 11, 1992 episode, his equipment did not.

“Typically what happens if I get nervous, I beat the s— out of the drums, twice as hard,” the Foo Fighters frontman shared. “I was hitting the drums 10 times harder than I’ve ever hit them before in my life. By the first verse, I had snapped my snare stick in half. Which is not good.”

He emphasized, “Oh, and this is only like 20 seconds into the song.”

Luckily Grohl’s mishap didn’t end in Nirvana offering all apologies for a ruined set.

“There was one break right before the first drum roll, I think, where I grabbed another stick really quick and busted into it. I mean, it was so close to being like Titanic-level disaster,” Grohl described.

The rockers also played “Territorial Pissings,” another song from their seminal album Nevermind, on the season 17 episode hosted by Rob Morrow.

In the documentary, SNL creator Lorne Michaels explained how the band made his radar. “David Geffen called me about Nirvana because they were on his label, and he said, ‘I don’t know what’s happening, but you know, last week they sold 60,000 records, and this week they sold 140,000, so something is happening,’” Michaels recalled.

Adam Sandler, in his second season on the cast at the time, remembered the frenzy around his fellow Gen Xers. “People were talking about it, getting more calls than you ever got before from friends in my hometown, just like, ‘What’s he like? What’s Kurt like?’”

Nirvana returned for a second stint as musical guest on Sept. 25, 1993, just seven months before Cobain’s death at age 27. And despite his early bout of nerves, Grohl went on to become the most frequent SNL musical guest in the show’s history, performing with Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures, as an impromptu drummer for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and other special appearances. The Grammy winner and two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee has also popped up in sketches over the years to show off his comedy chops, like the fan-favorite “Punk Band Reunion at the Wedding.”

Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music, co-directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Oz Rodríguez, is now streaming on Peacock.

In a recent interview, Dave Grohl, former drummer of Nirvana, reminisced about a mishap that occurred during the band’s first appearance on Saturday Night Live back in 1992.

Grohl revealed that just before going on stage to perform their hit song “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” he accidentally knocked over his drum kit, causing chaos and confusion among the band members and crew. Despite the unexpected setback, Nirvana managed to pull off a memorable performance that has since become iconic in the history of rock music.

Grohl’s recollection of the mishap serves as a reminder that even in the midst of chaos and mishaps, true talent and determination can shine through. Nirvana’s performance on SNL that night is a testament to their resilience and ability to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of their art.

  • Questlove’s SNL Music Doc Montage Took a Year to Make

If your brain got deep-fried watching the marvelous opening sequence to 50 Years of SNL Music, yes, it was a very intensive labor of love for Questlove, and the Emmys committee should already have a verdict. Speaking with Deadline about the method behind his creative madness, the director said that the seven-minute mash-up — which deftly remixed about a hundred SNL performances — took nearly a year to complete in the editing room. “I knew you got to gobsmack them right at the top,” he explained. “I had all this music, so I thought, I’m going to prepare this montage the way that I would prepare a DJ gig.” Questlove was asked by Lorne Michaels to direct the project in early 2021 and committed to watching every single SNL episode for research, which gave him about two and a half years to complete it before working with an editor on the montage. (Depending on the day, Quest watched between four to eight episodes.) However, he was disheartened that the editor relied on artificial intelligence to cultivate ideas.

“He kind of laughed at me said that he took the liberty of doing the same thing, but ‘I didn’t do your process, I just put a bunch of stuff in the computer and this is what it spit back to me,’” Questlove recalled about their first meeting. “I was laughing, so I didn’t have to sit through a year’s worth of SNL viewing? Then we just kind of went through my notes.” The final edit, of course, has his very human Roots crew touch all over it, because we’re doubtful ChatGPT could suggest a transition from “Hot in Herre” to “Take Me Out.” “That to me is the most important part of where we are right now in terms of technology,” Quest added. “Do we still trust humans to do this stuff or can we just type a command in and let AI do it for us?”

Questlove’s recent SNL music documentary montage took a year to make, and the result was well worth the wait. The montage, which aired during the show’s season finale, featured iconic musical moments from the show’s history spanning over four decades.

Questlove, the drummer for The Roots and music director for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, curated the montage with painstaking detail and precision. He carefully selected clips from various musical performances on SNL, showcasing the incredible talent and diversity of artists who have graced the stage over the years.

The montage featured performances from legendary artists such as Prince, Aretha Franklin, Nirvana, and Beyoncé, as well as newer acts like Billie Eilish and Lizzo. Questlove’s keen eye for musical moments and his deep appreciation for the history of music on SNL made the montage a true celebration of the show’s musical legacy.

Fans and critics alike have praised Questlove’s montage for its creativity, nostalgia, and sheer entertainment value. It serves as a reminder of the power of music to unite and inspire, and the lasting impact that SNL has had on the music industry.

Overall, Questlove’s SNL music documentary montage is a testament to his skill as a curator and his passion for music. It took a year to make, but the end result is a masterpiece that will be remembered for years to come.
