  • Fact or Fiction: Domantas Sabonis is The Biggest Snub of the 2025 NBA All-Star Game

Each week during the 2024-25 NBA season, we will take a deeper dive into some of the league’s biggest storylines in an attempt to determine whether trends are based more in fact or fiction moving forward.

What is a snub? A snub is a guy that can’t get no love from … the voting panel for the NBA All-Star Game.

Maybe a handful of you understood that joke. But it is true. I did not envy the voters this season. The league is as rich with talent as it has ever been. Someone was bound to get snubbed. Multiple players.

The NBA on Thursday announced its All-Star reserves (selected by the coaches), completing the 24-player field for this year’s All-Star Game in San Francisco, so long as (fingers crossed) nobody gets injured between now and Feb. 16. Here are the rosters (* = starter):

And sure enough: There are some snubs. But remember:

When we are determining The Biggest Snub, we have to kick someone out. Sorry, James Harden.

Hear me out. (But a disclaimer first: Games played matter, so apologies to Paolo Banchero, Luka Dončić, Joel Embiid, Ja Morant and Franz Wagner, among others who did not play enough to earn consideration.)

The Biggest Snub has to come from the West. There are too many good players in the conference. Herro would not have sniffed a selection on a .500 team from the West. He should not have even made it over Trae Young in the Eastern Conference, but if we are looking for the most talented non-All-Star this season — The Biggest Snub — he is in the West. He did not fail to make an All-Star team over Tyler Herro.

He failed to make one over Harden, who is having a great season for a Los Angeles Clippers team that has exceeded expectations. He also may not be the most valuable member of his own team. Norman Powell and Ivica Zubac are, at the very least, as impactful, as is a healthy Kawhi Leonard. The Clippers are in sixth place because of a defense that is ranked second in the NBA despite the presence of Harden; not because of a bottom-10 offense.

    (Stefan Milic/Yahoo Sports Illustration)(Stefan Milic/Yahoo Sports Illustration)

    (Stefan Milic/Yahoo Sports Illustration)

Harden’s raw numbers — 21.7 points, 8.4 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game — are impressive, though he is shooting 40% from the field and below league average from 3 (35.2%). His 203 turnovers lead the NBA.

I do not like making a case against anyone, but these are the rules, and it is a good one against Harden.

Now for the reveal: This year’s The Biggest Snub is not LaMelo Ball or Devin Booker or Tyrese Maxey. It is Domantas Sabonis, spawn of Arvydas, King of The Nail.

It was between him and Kyrie Irving.

    • Sabonis: 20.9 PTS (61/48/77), 14.5 REB, 6.6 AST (3.1 TO), 0.6 STL, 0.4 BLK; 68.0 TS%, 24.1 PER

    • Irving: 24.2 PTS (48/42/90), 4.9 AST (2.3 TO), 4.6 REB, 1.2 STL, 0.3 BLK; 60.0 TS%, 19.8 PER

    • Harden: 21.7 PTS (40/35/89), 8.4 AST (4.6 TO), 5.8 REB, 1.5 STL, 0.6 BLK; 57.3 TS%, 19.1 PER

Would you look at that? Sabonis is the most efficient scorer of the three, leads the NBA in rebounding and averages more assists per game than Irving (with a higher assist-to-turnover ratio than Harden).

Here is who has averaged a 21-14-6 in NBA history: Wilt Chamberlain. That is it.

What else do you really have to say? Sabonis has also played more than both of them this season. And when he is on the court, the Kings are 14.9 points per 100 meaningful possessions better, according to Cleaning the Glass — the league’s fourth-best on/off rating among players who have logged at least 1,000 minutes, trailing only Jokić, Wembanyama and Chris Paul (who has played more than three-quarters of his minutes with Wemby).

Sacramento has the equivalent of a top-five offense when Sabonis is on the floor and a bottom-two offense when he is on the bench, and the team’s offensive rating has settled into seventh in the league.

By contrast the Mavericks are 3.8 points per 100 possessions better when Irving is on the floor, and the Clippers are 4.8 points per 100 possessions better when Harden is on the court. Add those on/off ratings together, and you are still searching for as much impact as Sabonis.

I am not here to say Sabonis’ game is the most compelling for an All-Star audience, but who wants to see another Harden step-back 3 when Sabonis is converting his triples at the league’s second-best clip? Plus, he will pass and rebound better than anyone. He won’t steal the show, but he belongs in it. What are we doing here? The answer is obvious.

Determination: Fact. Domantas Sabonis is The Biggest Snub of the 2025 NBA All-Star Game.

Fact or Fiction: Domantas Sabonis is The Biggest Snub of the 2025 NBA All-Star Game

With the rosters for the 2025 NBA All-Star Game recently announced, many fans and analysts were quick to point out one glaring omission – Domantas Sabonis. The Indiana Pacers forward has been putting up impressive numbers all season long, averaging a double-double and showcasing his versatility on both ends of the court.

Sabonis has been a key player for the Pacers, leading the team in scoring, rebounding, and assists. His ability to score in the paint, crash the boards, and facilitate for his teammates has made him a standout player in the league. Despite his stellar performance, Sabonis was left off the All-Star roster, leading many to believe that he was the biggest snub of the game.

So, is it a fact or fiction that Domantas Sabonis is the biggest snub of the 2025 NBA All-Star Game? While it’s certainly a subjective topic, the numbers don’t lie – Sabonis has been playing at an All-Star level this season. His absence from the roster is a tough pill to swallow for Pacers fans and Sabonis supporters alike, but ultimately, the decision lies in the hands of the coaches and fans who vote for the All-Star reserves.

Whether you believe Sabonis was snubbed or not, one thing is for certain – he will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the NBA and will use this perceived snub as motivation to elevate his game even further.

  • Sixers’ Nick Nurse reacts to 2025 All-Star snub of Tyrese Maxey

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers are sitting at 19-27 and have dealt with a slew of injuries throughout the season. Joel Embiid has played only 13 games while they have tried to work Paul George into things as they try and remain title contenders in the East.

Tyrese Maxey has had to take on much more responsibility and is averaging 27.1 points, 6.0 assists, and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 43.8% from the floor and 33.7% from deep. He also was averaging 1.9 steals per game.

Alas, Maxey was not named an All-Star when the Eastern Conference reserves for 2025 were revealed. The guards who were named over him were the likes of Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland, and Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons.

“I’m disappointed,” coach Nick Nurse said on Friday. “I thought he’d be in it, but also the guys that made it are, obviously, having good seasons and the guys that didn’t as well. Not easy to make it. Again, a lot of weight put to where you are in the standings as well, obviously, but I feel like he’s playing at an All-Star level.”

Maxey was named an All-Star for the first time in 2024 and will be looking to try again in the 2025-26 season.

This article originally appeared on Sixers Wire: Sixers’ Nick Nurse reacts to 2025 All-Star snub of Tyrese Maxey

In a recent interview, Sixers head coach Nick Nurse expressed his disappointment over the snub of Tyrese Maxey from the 2025 All-Star game. Despite Maxey’s impressive performance this season, averaging over 20 points per game and leading the Sixers to a top seed in the Eastern Conference, he was not selected as an All-Star.

Nurse emphasized Maxey’s impact on the team, stating that he has been a key player in their success and deserves to be recognized for his hard work and dedication. He also mentioned that Maxey’s versatility and scoring ability make him a valuable asset to the team, and he believes that he should have been given the opportunity to showcase his skills on the All-Star stage.

Although disappointed, Nurse remains confident that Maxey will continue to prove himself and earn his spot in future All-Star games. He urged fans to continue supporting Maxey and the Sixers as they strive for success in the playoffs and beyond. #TyreseMaxey #NBAAllStar #Sixers #NickNurse

  • This 98% Fresh Film’s Oscars Snub Hurts More Than the Rest (Yet It’s Getting the Least Amount of Attention)

Taking on any superhero role is quite a commitment, as actors are tasked with representing some of the most courageous figures in storytelling. One of the most iconic actors to play a comic-book vigilante is the late Christopher Reeve. He was cast in 1978’s Superman and proved to be perfect casting as Clark Kent. His take on this classic DC hero has been celebrated by audiences ever since Richard Donner’s cinematic masterpiece was released. Fans were left distraught when Christopher Reeve was left paralyzed by a horse riding accident on May 27, 1995. This tragic occurrence is the main inspiration behind Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. Directed by documentary filmmakers Peter Ettedgul and Ian Bonhote, the movie is a beautiful portrait of Christopher Reeve’s story as both an actor and a disability activist.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story has been a major hit with audiences and critics, securing 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with both reviewers and regular moviegoers. The huge outpouring of support from viewers of Ettedgul and Bonhote’s documentary left many anticipating that the film would make the shortlist for the Oscar’s Best Documentary Feature Film, but the movie is surprisingly missing from the final list. Christopher Reeve and his time as both Superman and an activist hold great cultural importance. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, especially, has sparked some important conversations and it’s a shame that the Academy decided to snub this wonderful film.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story Is Essential Viewing for Every Movie Fan

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is a heart-wrenching documentary celebrating the actor that will soar for everyone, not just Man of Steel fans.

Many comic readers believe that Christopher Reeve was the perfect Superman and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story supports this notion better than any other movie. Although Christopher Reeve seems quite humble in the archive footage featured throughout the documentary, claiming himself to be nothing like the character he portrayed, his actions prove that he embodies the values of Superman. During the aftermath of his horse riding fall, when he ends up with a spinal cord injury, it’s his impressive strength of spirit and his resilience that carry him through his life-changing injuries. Understandably, Christopher Reeve struggles to adjust to his new life to begin with, questioning how he can continue to support his family while being paralyzed, but he soon decides to use his disability as a force for good.

One of the things the documentary highlights so well is how Christopher Reeve acts as a symbol of hope for those in similar situations. He spends time interacting with others who have paralysis in the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation and writes cards with messages of encouragement to children in the same predicament. Christopher Reeve becomes a beloved figure within the paralyzed community, who look up to him as a figure of inspiration during the actor’s time at the Kessler Institute. The line between Superman and Christopher Reeve becomes blurred as he adapts to his new role within society as a major public figure with paralysis.

Christopher Reeve Was An Influential Figure In Disability Rights

Christopher Reeve talks to Clark Kent in Smallville

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’s main focus is on Christopher Reeve’s role as an influential figure in paralysis, and disabled rights as a whole. The documentary does a fantastic job of showcasing how Christopher Reeve was one of the most important disability activists, giving speeches at the Oscars and also the Democratic National Convention. He gave paralysis the biggest platform it had ever received, using his fame to highlight the condition and spark conversations about the support required to help those with the disability to live with their condition.

The greatest impact Christopher Reeve left on the paralyzed community was the establishment of The Christopher Reeve Foundation. The charity was founded by Christopher and Dana Reeve in 1996 and focuses on funding research into paralysis, as well as other neurological conditions. Since its conception, The Christopher Reeve Foundation has helped several individuals across the globe receive the guidance and support that they require for their disability, conducting some groundbreaking research into neurological disorders, and educating people on these disabilities. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story doesn’t shy away from criticism of the charity, though, displaying how some people within the disabled community were unhappy with the charity’s focus on ‘curing’ paralysis. The idea of acquiring a cure for a disability is highly controversial, because of how much being disabled becomes a part of a person’s identity. The fact that the documentary addresses the issues shared by these individuals makes it feel like a very authentic representation of the conversations surrounding Christopher Reeve’s activism at the time.

I Love Christopher Reeve, But an Underrated Superman Actor Deserves More Recognition

For Gen X and Older Millennials, Christopher Reeve is the definitive Superman in live action, but 1950s TV star George Reeves deserves more respect.

Another brilliant aspect of Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is how it uses the documentary as a platform, to give a voice to another woman living with paralysis. Brooke Ellison is featured throughout as a friend of the late Christopher Reeve, and a disabled activist. It helps to place the focus on being as much about the ordinary people with the same or similar conditions to who Christopher Reeve met, as it is about Christopher Reeve himself. It shows how much of his story is about the lives he had touched as well as his own experiences with paralysis.

Brooke Ellison is particularly important to the documentary’s depiction of who Christopher Reeve was as a person, due to how the actor chooses to shoot an entire movie about Brooke Ellison’s life story. Determined to highlight to audiences the day-to-day life of a woman with paralysis, Christopher Reeve uses his status as a Hollywood icon to shine a spotlight on Brooke Ellison’s inspirational life. The Brooke Ellison Story details how Brooke was left with a near-fatal neck injury after a serious car accident, and who would go on to graduate from college, despite being told she could never lead a normal life. It would be Christopher Reeve’s last directing project and reflects how important it was to him to make sure that the paralyzed community was being heard. The Brooke Ellison Story was a major turning point in disabled representation, representing how a disability should never hold a person back from achieving their goals.

The Focus On Christopher Reeve’s Family And Friends Add A Neat Emotional Touch

Although Super/Man’s primary focus is on the late Christopher Reeve, his family is just as vital to the actor’s life story. So much of Christopher Reeve’s motivations are centered around his desire to be there for his family and to protect them from the pressures of fame. It’s his wife’s encouraging words that Christopher Reeve is still the same man that she married which gives him hope after he becomes paralyzed. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story brilliantly incorporates interviews with the actor’s adult children, Will, Matthew, and Alexander Reeve. Through their eyes, the audience is afforded a glimpse into how Christopher Reeve was very much a family man, encouraging them to partake in an active lifestyle, through activities like horse riding and skiing. The actor was keen for them to live as normal a life as possible, despite having taken on one of cinema’s most iconic roles Superman.

The feature documentary includes interviews with various celebrity friends, like Whoopi Goldberg and Glenn Close, who reveal what it was like to work with him. From their anecdotes, it is clear that Christopher Reeve was a supportive figure in movies like In The Gloaming, establishing a collaborative workplace atmosphere while operating as the film’s director. Their love and adoration for Christopher Reeve is evident through how they talk so openly about their relationship with the Superman star.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story devotes significant screentime to the well-documented friendship between Christopher Reeve and the late Robin Williams. The pair held a strong rapport, and Robin Williams was instrumental in helping Christopher Reeve come to terms with his disability. The documentary stresses how Robin Williams would use his comedic abilities to keep Christopher Reeve’s spirits up, and his hilarious comedy routines helped Christopher Reeve through his darkest periods. One of the saddest aspects of Super/Man is the suggestion that Robin Williams may still have been around had Christopher Reeve not passed away at only 52 years of age. It shows the impact that Christopher Reeve had left not just on Robin Williams, but on the entire world, and how his loss removed one of Hollywood’s most influential figures.

The Oscars are known for their controversial snubs, but this year’s biggest oversight is truly baffling. “The Farewell,” a critically acclaimed film that boasts a staggering 98% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has been completely ignored by the Academy.

Directed by Lulu Wang and starring Awkwafina in a career-defining role, “The Farewell” has been praised for its emotional depth, cultural significance, and stellar performances. Despite its widespread acclaim and numerous award nominations, including a Golden Globe win for Awkwafina, the film failed to secure a single Oscar nomination.

This snub is particularly painful for fans of “The Farewell,” as it not only highlights the Academy’s ongoing diversity and inclusion issues, but also underscores the lack of recognition for Asian-American voices in Hollywood. While other snubbed films have received plenty of attention and backlash, “The Farewell” seems to be flying under the radar.

It’s a shame that such a powerful and important film is being overlooked in favor of more traditional Oscar bait. “The Farewell” deserved better, and its absence from the nominations is a glaring reminder of the work that still needs to be done in the industry.

As we gear up for the Oscars ceremony, let’s not forget about the films that truly deserve our attention and recognition. “The Farewell” may have been snubbed, but its impact and importance will not be forgotten.

  • After keeping Mavericks afloat, gutsy Kyrie Irving deserves better than All-Star snub

As complaints about All-Star snubs go, Mark Cuban’s “NBA gonna NBA” wasn’t as pointed as Devin Booker’s charge that it’s “an entertainment, drama, political league,” but it’s pithier. Probably doesn’t rise to the level of a fine. And not because Cuban, first in league history in fines, is just a minority owner these days.

You can still get busted even if you’re not calling the shots anymore, though it probably takes all the fun out of it.

Anyway, Cuban was at least half right when he tweeted it was “JUST INSANE” that neither Luka Doncic nor Kyrie Irving made the All-Star team, shutting out the Mavs in the process.

    Mavericks

Be the smartest Mavericks fan. Get the latest news.

The facts are that Luka doesn’t really have a complaint coming. He’s only played 22 games because of a bad calf, and it’s questionable whether he’ll be back before the game on Valentine’s Day weekend.

Then again, if he was just going to stroll through his All-Star appearance as usual, maybe he’s good to go now.

But Kyrie getting stiffed as an All-Star? Who counted the coaches’ votes?

    The Nets?

Kyrie’s old team might be justified holding a grudge after seeing how he’s played since the deadline deal two years ago. Not only did he help the Mavs to the NBA Finals last season, he’s been a model citizen since forcing his way out of Brooklyn. Makes it all the worse for the Nets considering how the trade worked out on their side.

Brooklyn got Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, two second-round picks and a first in 2029. The Nets may yet make something out of all the seconds they’ve accumulated in deals involving those principals. As it stands, all they’ve got is D’Angelo Russell.

D-Lo is a nice player, but he’s no Hall of Famer.

Explains what Kyrie meant when asked about the deal after scoring 25 points in the Mavs’ 106-98 win over Oklahoma City a couple weeks ago.

“Best trade in the business, baby,” he told reporters. “We won that trade.

    “I was bad goods.”

Some of us may have implied the latter point two years ago, and for good reason. Kyrie’s reputation had taken a major hit on and off the court. But, in the culture created and nurtured by Nico Harrison and Jason Kidd, he’s not only played at an All-Star level, he’s been the Mavs’ unquestioned leader.

Despite a bulging disk in his back, Kyrie has held the Mavs together not only in Luka’s absence but those created by injuries to at least half the rotation.

You’d think a guy who’s keeping the reigning Western Conference champs afloat with exceptional numbers would get the benefit of the doubt with coaches.

Not so much, it turns out.

Before we go any further, here’s how it works: Once fans, media and players vote on two backcourt players and three frontcourt, with fans counting 50% and the players and media splitting the other half, head coaches pick seven reserves.

In the West, they went with Anthony Edwards and James Harden, the only guards, and Anthony Davis, Jaren Jackson Jr., Victor Wembanyama, Alpheren Sengun and Jalen Williams. Because it’s hard divvying up so many great players among so few spots, coaches give added weight to players from good teams.

Which is why the deeper West has just two teams with multiple representatives (Oklahoma City and the Lakers) while 75% of the East’s roster comes from Cleveland, Boston, Milwaukee and the Knicks.

Team record explains why the Hornets’ LaMelo Ball, who led all players in the fan vote, didn’t make the team even though he’s the league’s fourth-leading scorer. Domantas Sabonis (21.0 points, 14.6 rebounds, 6.5 assists) got hosed again because he plays for the Kings. Same with South Garland’s Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia, Trae Young in Atlanta and Booker in Phoenix.

Young’s defensive rating as a turnstile doesn’t help, either.

No arguments here with most of the choices in the West. But there was still a way to include Kyrie.

For one thing, Harden’s numbers (21.7 points, 8.4 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 35.3% on 3s, 4.6 turnovers, 3.9 win shares) aren’t as good overall as Irving’s (24.2 points, 4.9 assists, 4.6 rebounds, 41.9% on 3s, 2.3 turnovers, 4.1 win shares) going into Friday’s game. The difference in the coaches’ minds, apparently, is that the Clippers’ record is better, so Harden gets the nod.

Not a good enough reason, but a better one than giving the Thunder a second rep.

Williams is a good player, but OKC has a lot of good players. Once Chet Holmgren returns, it’ll have its second-best one. This should tell you where the coaches got it wrong in picking the reserves.

Giving OKC’s third-best player its second spot on the All-Star team while denying the Mavs and their second-best player seems like bad math.

Especially considering the Mavs are 3-1 against the Thunder this season.

For the record: This isn’t the first time the Mavs whiffed as All-Stars. Happened all the time in the ‘80s, ‘90s and last decade. First, Dirk Nowitzki almost singlehandedly changed the perception of the Mavs for the better, then Luka picked up where he left off. Time for everyone to realize the Mavs aren’t a one-horse team anymore.

Find more Mavericks coverage from The Dallas Morning News here.

Kyrie Irving has been a key contributor to the success of the Dallas Mavericks this season, stepping up in the absence of injured star Luka Doncic. Despite his impressive performances, Irving was snubbed from the All-Star Game roster.

After averaging 27.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game, Irving deserved to be recognized as one of the top players in the league. His fearless play and clutch performances have kept the Mavericks competitive in the tough Western Conference.

Irving’s snub is a disservice to his talent and hard work this season. He has proven himself as a top-tier player and should have been rewarded with an All-Star selection.

As the Mavericks continue to push for a playoff spot, Irving’s contributions should not go unnoticed. He has been a key factor in their success and deserves better than being left off the All-Star roster. It’s time for the league to recognize Irving’s talent and give him the recognition he deserves.

  • How Pamela Anderson Reacted to Her Oscars Snub

Pamela Anderson almost had it. Following her buzzworthy performance in Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl, she garnered lead actress nominations for the Golden Globes, Gotham Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards—but not for the Oscars. When the Academy Award nominations were announced this morning, her name was notably missing from the list, and so were The Last Showgirl and Coppola altogether.

Anderson, however, wasn’t holding her breath for a nod. “Oh my gosh, it’s not something I ever expected. Doing the work is the win,” she tells ELLE.com hours after the announcement. “That’s what I like to do, and I think we can lose sight of that sometimes in this whole crazy awards season, but it’s nice to be recognized, and it’s all a bonus.”

She adds, “I couldn’t imagine [it] anyway. I’m happy for the SAG nomination, that’s [voted on by] your peers. That’s really cool. This has been a long road promoting this film.”

In the movie, Anderson stars as Shelley, a Las Vegas showgirl who debates her next move when her long-running act must come to a close. The film was met with critical praise following its premiere at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival, with many calling it a career-best performance for the former Baywatch and Barb Wire star. It’s a satisfying comeback for Anderson, now 57, who rose to fame in the ’90s after being featured in Playboy but was written off as a sex symbol and not taken seriously as an actress. Anderson herself said that the awards buzz felt like “the best payback,” especially after her life and former relationship with Tommy Lee were portrayed in a “hurtful” way in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy series in 2022. “It happened, and now I’m here, and this is the best payback,” she told Andy Cohen in a Sirius XM interview. “I’m being seen and recognized for my work and not these tawdry moments.”

The Last Showgirl is now playing in theaters.

Pamela Anderson, known for her roles in Baywatch and Barb Wire, was noticeably absent from this year’s Oscars nominations. Despite her critically acclaimed performance in her latest film, many were shocked to see her snubbed from the list of nominees.

In a recent interview, Anderson shared her reaction to the Oscars snub, stating that while she was disappointed, she remains grateful for the recognition she has received throughout her career. She expressed her gratitude to her fans and supporters, and emphasized that awards and nominations do not define her worth as an actress.

Anderson also took the opportunity to congratulate her fellow nominees and expressed her excitement to continue pursuing her passion for acting. She remains optimistic about the future and looks forward to challenging herself with new projects in the coming year.

While Anderson may have been snubbed by the Oscars this year, her grace and humility in the face of disappointment serve as a reminder of her resilience and dedication to her craft. As she continues to captivate audiences with her talent, it is clear that Pamela Anderson is a true star in her own right, with or without the recognition of award shows.

  • Michelle Yeoh Says Wicked Cast Were ‘Crying’ Over Director Jon M. Chu’s Oscar Snub

Michelle Yeoh is reacting to Wicked‘s 10 Academy Awards nominations — and one category where it missed the cut.

Yeoh, 62, appeared on The View on Thursday, Jan. 23 to promote her new Star Trek movie Star Trek: Section 31, just after this year’s Oscar nominations were announced. Yeoh’s costars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo both received nominations for their acting and the film is also among this year’s 10 Best Picture nominees, giving the Wicked team a reason to celebrate. Still, they wish their director Jon M. Chu was recognized.

“We are all crying with joy, but we must say we are also crying because Jon M. Chu and Alice Brooks, our [director of photography], were not nominated,” Yeoh said, when asked whether she had spoken with Grande, 31, and Erivo, 38, since their nominations were announced. “But the rest of us are celebrating — Best Picture, costume, hair. It is major.”

After The View cohost Ana Navarro remarked, “This is the second time they’ve passed over Jon Chu. He should have been nominated for In the Heights,” Yeoh said, “Yes, I agree with you!”

Chu, 45, was left out of the five-person Best Director field at this year’s Oscars; Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), James Mangold (A Complete Unknown), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez) and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) make up the nominee field for that category. In total, Wicked is tied with The Brutalist for the second-most nominations among any movie this year; Emilia Pérez received 13 total nominations and leads the field.

“He is incredibly brilliant, and all of the other nominations stems from Jon,” Grande told Variety in a Jan. 23 interview, when asked for her take on why Chu did not receive a Best Director nomination. “I know he feels like seeing Wicked be celebrated is a celebration of him as well. We just got off Facetime, and I told him how much I love him, and the truth, which is that absolutely none of this could have happened without his leadership, brilliance, empathy and thoughtfulness.”

Erivo also shouted out Chu in an Instagram post she shared in reaction to her own nomination; she would become an EGOT honoree if she wins the Best Actress award. “Thank you @jonmchu, our fearless leader whose kindness provided us with the room to play, you are deserving of all good things and I’m lucky to call you my brother,” she wrote in a caption.

Conan O’Brien will host the Oscars ceremony, which will air live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 2 at 7 p.m. ET on ABC and Hulu.

Michelle Yeoh, star of the upcoming film “Wicked,” revealed that the cast was left in tears over director Jon M. Chu’s Oscar snub.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Yeoh expressed her disappointment over Chu not receiving a nomination for his work on the highly anticipated film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical.

“We were all crying when we found out that Jon didn’t get the recognition he deserves,” Yeoh shared. “His vision and dedication to bringing ‘Wicked’ to life were truly phenomenal, and it’s a shame that he wasn’t acknowledged by the Academy.”

Chu, known for his work on films like “Crazy Rich Asians” and “In the Heights,” has received critical acclaim for his ability to bring diverse and inclusive stories to the big screen. Many fans and colleagues were shocked and disappointed by his omission from this year’s Best Director category.

Despite the snub, Yeoh remains hopeful that Chu’s talent and hard work will be recognized in the future. “Jon is a true visionary and a master storyteller,” she said. “I have no doubt that he will continue to create groundbreaking and impactful films that will inspire audiences for years to come.”

“Wicked” is set to hit theaters in December 2023, and fans are eagerly anticipating Chu’s unique take on the beloved musical. While the Oscar snub may have been a disappointment, the cast and crew remain confident in Chu’s abilities and are excited to see his vision come to life on the big screen.

  • Cynthia Erivo reacts to director Jon M. Chu’s Oscar snub despite film getting 10 nominations | Hollywood

    Jan 25, 2025 08:37 PM IST

Cynthia Erivo was nominated in the Best Actress category for her work as Elphaba in Wicked. The actor has now questioned director Jon M. Chu’s snub.

Cynthia Erivo is basking in the massive success of her latest release Wicked, and her nomination for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category. The film scored an impressive 10 nods, including one for Best Picture. However, director Jon M. Chu was shut out in the Best Director category, a fact that is still not sitting well with the actor. What Cynthia said about the snub

During the chat, when Cynthia was asked about Jon M. Chu not getting into the top five, the actor said: “I don’t know. I wish people understood just how much work has to go into creating a big, giant behemoth like Wicked. None of that can happen without his vision. It just isn’t possible. He is the who can see who is right for this, who cast us in these roles, who asked for nine million tulips, who says he wants to build a real set so it feels embedded in reality. It’s him! He says he wants the camera right in Elphaba’s face when she walks down the steps in the Ozdust Ballroom. There is a kind of vision that you have to have in order to be in control of something that could run away from you very quickly if you don’t know what to do.”

She went on to add, “I think he is an exquisite director. The people that he put in charge of every department! That also takes skill.”

    More details

The ones who were nominated in the Best Director category include Sean Baker for Anora, Coralie Fargeat for The Substance, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, James Mangold for A Complete Unknown, and Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez.

Wicked, the first of two Universal Pictures films based on a Broadway prequel to The Wizard of Oz, stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the story of a misunderstood, green-skinned student of magic who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked also stars Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh and Ethan Slater in pivotal roles.

  • Angelina Jolie’s ‘heart’ not in awards race after Maria’s Oscar snub: ‘This was doomed from…’ | Hollywood

Angelina Jolie entered awards season with high hopes for her portrayal in the biopic Maria, but her journey quickly took an unexpected turn. Despite her optimism, the actress faced disappointment after losing out to Demi Moore for a Golden Globe, failing to secure a nomination for a SAG Award, and ultimately being snubbed at the Academy Awards. A source close to Jolie exclusively revealed to In Touch that the series of setbacks left the actress stressed and baffled.

Jolie is surrounded by ‘air of sadness’

The higher level of insider revealed to the outlet, “Number one, the thing that hurts Angelina is her almost total lack of a sense of humour or lightness when she talks about this movie,” and her Netflix-funded, failed awards campaign. The insider continued, “and when you combine that with the actual movie itself, there’s this air of sadness and moroseness around her that isn’t fun.”

She was counting on her role in Maria to be her big comeback after she spent months preparing for teh role which also included singing. However, the insider suggested that her seriousness might have hurt her chance for the award and opened up the way for critics to scrutinise her performance. The source told the outlet, “She’s got a dark personality and Maria Callas’ music is uplifting, but her story is not.”

They added, “Angelina also was harmed by the fact that she didn’t do her own singing. Even though Rami Malek got away with it six years ago on Bohemian Rhapsody, the mood has shifted and awards voters value authenticity above everything.”

    Jolie’s comparison to Timothee Chalamet

The source noted that the music genre has been the trend recently, thus, Maria was easily edged out for the award. The insider shared with the news outlet, “There’s also the problem of comparisons to Timmy (Timothee) Chalamet in A Complete Unknown. He did his own signing in that movie and absolutely killed it, stunning even his biggest naysayers. Timothée is even going on SNL next week to sing in character as Bob Dylan, live.”

However, all the good press for Chalamet ended up hurting Jolie’s shot for the Oscars. The source said, “It seems like the new standard for musical biopics, even ones about opera singers, is that you really have to do the singing yourself. This isn’t lost on Angelina or her team, no matter how much money they throw behind her otherwise brilliant performance. Timmy’s success, plus the real singing done by the women of Wicked, completely overshadowed her.”

While the source highlights the strong backing Jolie received from Netflix, it’s clear there was also significant organized opposition to her nomination this year. As In Touch previously reported, a number of A-list stars, including Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Annette Bening, Laura Dern, Mary McCormack, Andrea Riseborough, and notably, Jolie’s ex-husband Brad Pitt, have rallied behind Nicole Kidman and Moore’s Oscar aspirations.

This group has also reportedly worked to undermine Jolie’s chances. A second source told the media outlet, “Jen’s group that has been proven to be able to steer the course of the nomination process.” Meanwhile, the first source admitted, “Her heart hasn’t been in this awards campaign because she knew she would be held to this impossible standard. This was doomed from the start.”

Angelina Jolie’s ‘heart’ not in awards race after Maria’s Oscar snub: ‘This was doomed from…

Angelina Jolie, renowned actress and filmmaker, recently expressed her disappointment after her latest film “Maria” was snubbed for an Oscar nomination. Jolie, who directed and produced the film, shared that her ‘heart’ was not in the awards race following the snub.

In a candid interview, Jolie opened up about her feelings towards the Oscars and how the exclusion of “Maria” affected her. She stated, “This was doomed from the start. I poured my heart and soul into this project, and to see it overlooked in this way is incredibly disheartening.”

Despite the disappointment, Jolie remains proud of the film and the impact it has had on audiences. She emphasized the importance of telling Maria’s story and shedding light on the important issues addressed in the film.

While Jolie may not be actively campaigning for awards recognition, her dedication to storytelling and bringing important narratives to the forefront remains unwavering. Fans and critics alike continue to admire Jolie’s talent and commitment to her craft, regardless of accolades.

As Jolie moves forward from this setback, her supporters are eager to see what new projects she will tackle next, knowing that her ‘heart’ will always be in her work, regardless of awards recognition.
