Will it snow during “Frozen Confines” hockey games at Wrigley Field?
The next seven days will feature plenty of Notre Dame vs. Penn State content.
It starts Friday night at Wrigley Field, where the home of MLB’s Chicago Cubs will host back-to-back doubleheaders of Big Ten hockey. The first game Friday pits Ohio State vs. Michigan in men’s hockey (5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT), followed by Notre Dame taking on Penn State (8:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. CT). Saturday sees a women’s hockey game between Ohio State and Wisconsin, with the Badgers’ men’s team then facing Michigan State at the same respective times of Friday’s contests.
More:The Chicago connections that make Notre Dame hockey’s game at Wrigley Field special
The “Frozen Confines” series comes three days after the NHL Winter Classic saw the St. Louis Blues defeat the Chicago Blackhawks, 6-2.
With it being an outdoor game, what does the weather forecast look like? Here’s the playing conditions expected for both days of action.
Weather forecast for “Frozen Confines” hockey games
While the Blues and Blackhawks had to deal with rain Tuesday, it’s unlikely the eight teams playing this weekend will have precipitation.
Per The Weather Channel, the high temperature for each day will be 24 degrees and the low 12 degrees. It’s expected to be partly cloudy conditions Friday, while mostly sunny Saturday. That could play a factor for at least the first period of the early games, as the sun won’t set until around 4:30 p.m. CT each day.
Important on Big Ten hockey standings
The only men’s Big Ten hockey team not playing at Wrigley Field this weekend is the conference leader, Minnesota. They enter January with a five-point cushion over Michigan State in the standings, but the Gophers have played two more conference games than the Spartans so far.
Wisconsin is tied for second with Michigan State, but have played four more Big Ten contests than them. This will be a key weekend for the Badgers to stay in the mix for a top seed in the conference tournament.
Ohio State is fourth and Michigan fifth in the conference. That leaves Notre Dame and Penn State in the bottom two spots, meaning points this weekend would help the winning team avoid finishing in last place by season’s end.
As the excitement builds for the upcoming “Frozen Confines” hockey games at Wrigley Field, fans are left wondering – will it snow during these epic outdoor matchups? With the frigid temperatures and unpredictable weather in Chicago during the winter months, the possibility of a snow-covered ice rink is definitely on the table. While the thought of watching players glide across a snow-covered ice surface under the lights at Wrigley Field is certainly a picturesque scene, it also presents some challenges for both the players and fans. Snow can affect the speed and control of the puck, making for a more unpredictable game. Additionally, the safety of the players could be compromised if the snow accumulation becomes too heavy.
However, a light dusting of snow could add to the ambiance of the event and make for a truly memorable experience for all in attendance. The magic of seeing snow fall during a hockey game at Wrigley Field would be a sight to behold and a unique opportunity for fans to witness a one-of-a-kind event.
So, will it snow during the “Frozen Confines” hockey games at Wrigley Field? Only time will tell. But one thing is for certain – no matter the weather, these games are sure to be a thrilling showcase of skill, determination, and the enduring spirit of outdoor hockey.

Wrigley Field Gets Ready to Host Winter Classic with Ice Hockey Transformation
Wrigley Field, the iconic home of the Chicago Cubs, is gearing up for a major transformation as it prepares to host the NHL Winter Classic. The annual outdoor hockey game is set to take place on New Year’s Day, and the historic ballpark will be turned into a winter wonderland for the event. The process of transforming Wrigley Field into a hockey rink is no small feat. The field will be covered with a layer of ice, and the bases and pitcher’s mound will be removed to make way for the rink. The outfield will be transformed into seating for fans, and giant screens will be set up to provide a close-up view of the action on the ice.
In addition to the rink itself, there will be a number of other attractions at Wrigley Field for the Winter Classic. Fans will have the opportunity to skate on the ice before the game, and there will be a winter village set up with food and drink vendors, as well as activities for fans of all ages.
The Winter Classic is always a highly anticipated event, and this year’s game at Wrigley Field is no exception. The matchup between two rival teams is sure to draw a large crowd, and the historic setting of Wrigley Field will only add to the excitement.
For the Chicago Cubs, hosting the Winter Classic is a unique opportunity to showcase their beloved ballpark in a new light. While baseball is the main focus at Wrigley Field, the venue has also hosted a number of other events over the years, including concerts and soccer matches. The Winter Classic will add another chapter to the storied history of the ballpark.
As the countdown to the Winter Classic continues, fans are eagerly awaiting the chance to see their favorite hockey teams face off in the iconic setting of Wrigley Field. With the transformation of the ballpark well underway, it’s clear that this year’s game will be one to remember.

winter classic. What time, when is the NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field? – NBC Chicago
The Chicago Blackhawks will take the St. Louis Blues on New Year’s Eve at the NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field.
Wrigley Field also hosted the 2009 edition of the event, which was won by the Detroit Red Wings in one of the wildest games the annual tradition has produced.
This time around, Connor Bedard and company are hoping to snap a couple of different losing streaks as hockey in Chicago takes center stage.
Here’s what to know about the game.
When and what time is the NHL Winter Classic?
This year’s game will be contested on New Year’s Eve, with puck drop slated for just after 4 p.m. Central time, according to the NHL.
Where will the game air?
Under terms of the NHL’s contract with multiple TV networks, this year’s game will air on TNT. It will also be available on truTV, and will stream live on Max, according to the league.
How many Winter Classics have the Blackhawks hosted?
This year’s game will mark the third time the Blackhawks have hosted a Winter Classic in team history. The 2009 game at Wrigley Field saw the Red Wings take down a 6-4 triumph, while the 2019 game at Notre Dame Stadium was won 4-2 by the Boston Bruins.
The Blackhawks have played in a total of four Winter Classic games, losing the 2015 game against the Washington Capitals at Nationals Park and the 2017 game against the Blues at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Have the Blackhawks won an outdoor game?
The Blackhawks will be playing in their seventh outdoor game when they hit the ice at Wrigley Field, but they’ve only won one of the previous six, taking down the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 2014 Stadium Series game at Soldier Field in Chicago.
What other venues have hosted the Winter Classic?
Wrigley Field will become one of two stadiums to have hosted multiple Winter Classic games, joining Fenway Park, which hosted the game in 2010 and in 2023.
Other stadiums to have hosted the annual game include Michigan Stadium, home of the Wolverines’ football team, the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, and T-Mobile Park in Seattle, which hosted last year’s game between the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken.
How are the teams playing heading into this year’s game?
The Blackhawks had won three straight games earlier this month under interim head coach Anders Sorensen, but the team has been struggling badly of late, allowing 21 goals in their last four games, all losses to the Flames, Wild, Sabres and Stars.
Bedard has seemingly snapped out of his sophomore slump in the month of December however, with six goals and nine assists to his credit this month. He has registered points in four consecutive games, with three goals and three assists in those games.
The Blues meanwhile are working to get back in the playoff hunt under new head coach Jim Montgomery, and are currently four points behind the Vancouver Canucks in the wild card hunt. They are 4-4-2 in their last 10 games.
They are led in scoring by centers Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas, with defenseman Colton Parayko leading blue liners with six goals and 15 assists this season.
The NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field is set to take place on January 1st at 1:00 PM CST. Tune in to NBC Chicago to catch all the action as the Chicago Blackhawks take on their rivals in this outdoor showdown. Don’t miss out on this exciting event! #NHLWinterClassic #WrigleyField #NBCChicago

#time #NHL #Winter #Classic #Wrigley #Field #NBC #ChicagoRenovated Wrigley Field still has same charm ahead of Winter Classic
Since Wrigley Field opened for the Chicago Whales of the Federal League in 1914 (the Cubs moved in for the 1916 season), it has hosted baseball, hockey, soccer, lacrosse and football in addition to such other events such as ski jumping, rock concerts, rodeos and circuses.
Whether early in the 20th century or early in the 21st, the charm of the ballpark has been its appeal, no matter the amenities.
“The fact that Wrigley itself out of all the ballparks is so unique,” Dempster said. “You’re in this neighborhood. It’s almost like the really cool version of having pond hockey in your backyard, in a weird way. These guys are going to be playing outdoors in the middle of a neighborhood. It’s just so cool.
“The vision that the NHL had of doing this (first Winter Classic) in 2008 in Buffalo, and I was at the first one at Wrigley, with all the things they’ve done, it’s just different. Wrigley is unlike any other stadium, arena, ballpark, you name it around the U.S. The uniqueness is what make it so special. The stuff around it, Gallagher Way. The park has been refurbished and all that kind of stuff. I think the integrity of it is still the same. That’s what’s so great. When they did all those renovations, it still feels like the old Wrigley when you’re in there, which is really cool.”
Kenney echoed those sentiments.
“Today, seeing the plans for the Winter Classic, with live music from the Smashing Pumpkins and Chance (the Rapper), multiple ice rinks, elaborate field pageantry and an amplified Gallagher Way, the original game feels like watching a rerun in black and white. Simple stuff.
“The NHL has really upped their game for the players, fans and media partners. Their level of sophistication and game production rivals the biggest rock shows that have come through our gates. Amazing talent there. Our fans are in for a [heck] of show.”
If Wrigley Field is indeed a field of dreams, Kenney concluded with a soliloquy that sounded like the character Terence Mann in the movie “Field of Dreams.”
“But the one constant is Wrigley Field,” Kenney said. “It’s now a federal landmark and restored for the next generation, with new amenities and an expanded campus. But the essence of the Friendly Confines remains the same. She’s still the unrivaled home of lifetime memories. More will be made on New Year’s Eve.”
NHL.com staff writer Tracey Myers contributed to this story

As hockey fans prepare to witness the clash between the Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild on the hallowed grounds of Wrigley Field, they can rest assured that the essence of the ballpark has been preserved. Discover NHL Winter Classic planning New Year’s Eve celebration at Wrigley Field
This is the second time the Blackhawks have hosted a Winter Classic at Wrigley. The first was Jan. 1, 2009, when they lost 6-4 to the Detroit Red Wings. It’s the second time the NHL has held the Winter Classic more than once in the same park; the 2010 and 2023 editions were played at Fenway Park in Boston.
This is the first Winter Classic on New Year’s Eve, and the NHL is playing into that in a big way. A staging area in right field, which is nearly complete, will host partygoers and feature a dance party hosted by DJ Oreo of Chicago during the second intermission.
“Uniquely, bringing fans on the field is something we just did for the first time last year,” Mayer said of the 2024 Winter Classic between the Seattle Kraken and Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. “We thought it worked well, so they’re going to get a really up-close feel and look to the game. It’s just going to add to the overall ambiance and why we moved from New Year’s Day to New Year’s Eve.”
Fans will also get to partake in New Year’s Eve celebrations around the world. As each takes place, that respective celebration will be shown on the video boards, located in left and right fields.
“Throughout the day and night, we’re just going to take in other celebrations. Again, wanting to sort of start off Chicago’s celebration and do it right here at Wrigley Field,” Mayer said. “We know once our game ends, everybody’s going to dump out into the streets, go home and get ready for other parties, but this is the first of the New Year’s Eve parties in Chicago.”
The League also wants to lean heavily into Wrigley and Chicago familiarities. This game will have its own rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” much as there was in 2009 when “Take Me Out to the Hockey Game” was sung in the third period by former Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg and then-Blackhawks ambassadors Denis Savard, Bobby Hull, Tony Esposito and Stan Mikita.
The entertainment features Chicago natives. Two-time Grammy award-winning alternative rock band Smashing Pumpkins will begin festivities by performing some of its greatest hits, including “Tonight, Tonight,” during pregame and player introductions. Grammy-award winning Chance the Rapper, also a Chicago native, will headline the first intermission performance presented by Ticketmaster.
On the hockey side, former Blackhawks defenseman Chris Chelios and forwards Savard and Jeremy Roenick will be on the ice for the ceremonial puck drop. All three have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame (Savard in 2000, Chelios in 2013 and Roenick last month).
During the second intermission the NHL will also begin its 2025 celebrations by highlighting the Blackhawks and Blues first and second Quarter Century Teams, honoring the best players from each team from the past 25 years.
The weather has been cooperating for preparations, and it should for the game as well – the latest from accuweather.com shows Tuesday’s weather as cloudy with a chance of rain and snow at times and a high of 41 degrees Fahrenheit.
The stage is almost set for a rocking hockey party at an iconic baseball field.
“This is one of the great landmarks in professional sports. We recognize that, we’re honored that we’re here, we’re honored we’re able to do a second game at Wrigley Field, and our fans love it. The response, not only from those in Chicago but NHL fans across the globe, they’re really excited about coming back to Wrigley,” Mayer said.
“I think they’re wondering what we have in store for the game and it’s up to us to deliver.”

Wrigley Field rink starting to take shape
As a chilly mist hovered over Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon, construction workers moved boxes across a large graphic of ivy where the third-base line normally would be.
Four days before a Tuesday afternoon puck drop for the NHL Winter Classic, the conversion from baseball ballpark to hockey rink is taking shape for the outdoor game between the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues.
“These are the exciting days for us — it’s where the field actually does come to life,” NHL chief content officer Steve Mayer said. “There’s a lot of work and a lot of great people that put this all together. …
“If you’ve been watching the progress from last week all the way till today, step by step, first, (we) put that rink out there and start building ice, and (then) we lay down an armor deck across the whole field. And now it’s the next layer, which is the graphics that sort of bring this to life. And that’s the exciting part. …
“That’s where it really starts to feel real. That’s when you realize you’re also within a week of the game.”
Mayer stood in front of cameras with the converted home of the Chicago Cubs as his backdrop.
“You’re probably looking at about 50% complete,” he said.
More graphics and structures need to be installed, as well as artificial snow.
Mayer also revealed that the Winter Classic will borrow a couple of Cubs traditions: the rooftops and the seventh-inning-stretch song, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”
“We’ve really tried to take advantage of what would be a Cubs game in so many different matters,” Mayer said. “And the rooftops will be pretty cool. That’s something that we didn’t have in 2009,” when Wrigley first played host to the Classic on New Year’s Day and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Hawks 6-4.
NHL chief content officer Steve Mayer speaks to reporters on Dec. 27, 2024, at Wrigley Field in advance of the Winter Classic between the Blackhawks and Blues. (Terrence Antonio James/Chicago Tribune) “One of the things that we constantly thought about was, OK, we were here in 2009, how do we make it feel and be different?” he said. “And it’s everything from the way we’re presenting the feel, but also the music. We really went (with the flavor of) Chicago with Chance the Rapper and Smashing Pumpkins.
“There’ll be traditions of Cubs games that you’ll see, that we’re just going to kind of bring over to what we’re going to do in our game, really taking advantage of this city, which has such a great sports tradition. … So why not play into that?”
As for “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” Mayer said the NHL will have its own version, which will take place after the second intermission during the first timeout.
Mayer said to gather the vibe of Cubs games, he and other members of the league’s events staff visited Wrigley twice to take it all in.
“There’ll be Cubs that will be in attendance,” he said. “We’ll play to as much of the tradition as possible. This is one of the great landmarks in professional sports, and we recognize that we’re honored that we’re here, we’re honored that we’re able to do a second game at Wrigley Field, and our fans love it.”
Exciting news for Chicago hockey fans! The Wrigley Field rink is starting to take shape as preparations for the upcoming game are well underway. The iconic baseball stadium is being transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with ice and boards for an epic outdoor hockey experience.Fans can expect an unforgettable atmosphere as they watch their favorite teams battle it out on the ice under the lights of Wrigley Field.
