Steelers lose defensive coach to the New York Jets
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA – OCTOBER 02: Breece Hall #20 of the New York Jets runs with the ball while being tackled by Alex Highsmith #56 and DeMarvin Leal #98 of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second quarter at Acrisure Stadium on October 02, 2022 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images) It has begun! Art Rooney II told everyone that while coaching staff changes were coming, the moves wouldn’t be “wholesale.”
Aaron Curry, who has been with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the team’s inside linebackers coach since February 2023, has been hired by the New York Jets as their new linebackers coach.
While no one can deny the inconsistency surrounding the run-stopping duties of the linebacker room in 2024, Curry was hardly the problem behind the defensive struggles as a whole.
Curry is expected to play a major role on the New York Jets’ coaching staff under new head coach Aaron Glenn and new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
Will more changes follow Curry’s departure from the Black and Gold? If so, will the Pittsburgh Steelers make the right decision and move on from defensive coordinator Teryl Austin? No one can deny that this 2025 offseason is shaping up to be an exciting one as January comes to a close.

This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: Steelers lose defensive coach to the New York Jets
The Pittsburgh Steelers have suffered a major blow as their defensive coach has decided to leave the team and join the New York Jets. This unexpected departure has left Steelers fans wondering how the team will adjust and move forward without their key defensive strategist. The defensive coach, who played a crucial role in shaping the Steelers’ defense over the past few seasons, will now be tasked with revamping the struggling Jets defense. His departure comes at a crucial time for the Steelers, as they are currently in the midst of a playoff push and will need to quickly find a replacement to fill the void left by his absence.
While losing a key member of the coaching staff is never easy, the Steelers will need to regroup and focus on finding a suitable replacement to ensure their defense remains strong and competitive. With the playoffs looming, the team will need to quickly adapt to this unexpected change in order to stay on track and continue their pursuit of a championship.
Only time will tell how this coaching change will impact the Steelers, but one thing is for certain – the team will need to come together and rally around their new defensive coach in order to overcome this setback and continue their quest for success.

New York Jets Hire Steelers Assistant Coach
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker coach Aaron Curry against the New England Patriots, December 8, 2023 – Ed Thompson / Steelers Now Pittsburgh Steelers inside linebackers coach Aaron Curry is being hired the New York Jets as their linebackers coach, according to a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Curry is the first departure from the Steelers coaching staff after the 2024 season. He had spent two seasons with the Steelers coaching their inside linebackers, including Patrick Queen, who was selected to the 2025 Pro Bowl Games this week.
It’s unclear if Curry was still under contract to the Steelers. Position coaches are generally given two-year contracts.
A former first-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks, Curry spent four seasons coaching at UNC Charlotte, and then three with the Seahawks before joining the Steelers. Curry coached defensive ends at Charlotte and outside linebackers with the Seahawks, but inside backers with the Steelers, which more closely aligned with where he played as a pro.
The Steelers struggled to defend the run down the stretch run of the 2024 season, giving up big totals to Baltimore Ravens back Derrick Henry twice over the final five weeks of the season.
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen tries to tackle Baltimore Ravens running back Justice Hill on Jan. 11, 2025.– Ed Thompson / Steelers Now Team president Art Rooney II called the linebacker position a strength during his end-of-season press conference, and most of that group will be set to return in 2025. Queen, Payton Wilson, Cole Holcomb and Mark Robinson are all under contract for next season, while Elandon Roberts and special teamer Tyler Matakevich are set to become free agents.
Pittsburgh did not have an assistant inside linebackers coach on the staff, though former Steelers inside linebacker Vince Williams worked as a de facto assistant defensive line coach this season and could be in consideration for a promotion.
Before Curry, Jerry Olsavsky was the team’s inside linebackers coach from 2015-22. He spent the last two seasons coaching at Duquesne.

The New York Islanders claimed defenceman Adam Boqvist off waivers from the Florida Panthers on Friday.
The 24-year-old has two goals and four points in 18 games this season while averaging 12:51 of ice time. He has not played an NHL game since Jan. 6.
Drafted eighth overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2018, Boqvist was dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets in July of 2021, where he would play five seasons before signing with the Panthers in the off-season on a one-year, $775,000 deal.
Isles continue to add on defence
With the Boqvist claim, this is New York’s third notable move to address their blueline in the past week.
On Jan. 24, the team signed Tony DeAngelo for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. The 29-year-old hasn’t played in the NHL this season, but had six goals with 26 assists in 34 games with the KHL’s St. Petersburg SKA.
DeAngelo appeared in 31 games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season, recording three goals and eight assists. He added two assists in nine playoff games.
On Monday, the Islanders acquired Scott Perunovich from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a 2026 conditional fifth-round pick.
The 26-year-old had two goals and six points in 24 games with the Blues this season while averaging 14:37 of ice time.
The 5-foot-10 left-shot defenceman signed a one-year, $1.15 million with the Blues in the off-season and is a restricted free agent at the end of the season.
The New York Islanders have added some defensive depth to their roster by claiming defenceman Adam Boqvist off waivers from the Florida Panthers. Boqvist, a former first round draft pick, brings skill and potential to the Islanders’ blue line. With injuries plaguing the Islanders’ defensive corps, Boqvist’s arrival couldn’t have come at a better time. The 21-year-old Swede has shown flashes of brilliance in his young career and will have the opportunity to make an impact with his new team.
Boqvist will join a talented Islanders team that is looking to make a deep playoff run this season. His addition provides some much-needed depth and versatility on the back end, and could prove to be a key acquisition for the team as they push towards the postseason.
Islanders fans can look forward to seeing Boqvist in action as he suits up for his new team in the coming games. With his skill and potential, he could be a valuable asset for the Islanders as they continue their quest for a championship.

Good morning Gang Green Nation! The Detroit Lions have hired David Shaw as their new passing game coordinator. He replaces Tanner Engstrand, leaving Engstrand still employed but without a job title with the Lions. That suggests another team will likely hire Engstrand very soon. The Jets are rumored to be interested in him for their open offensive coordinator position, so perhaps that opening will be filled shortly.
If Engstrand is hired as the Jets offensive coordinator, that would make it four out of the top five coaching hires who have never worked in their current positions before. Steve Wilks has been a defensive coordinator, but Aaron Glenn has never been a head coach, Tanner Engstrand has never been an offensive coordinator, Chris Banjo has never been a special teams coordinator and Steve Heiden has never been an offensive line coach. If this is the coaching staff, we should probably expect some growing pains as the new coaches get on the job training and learn their new responsibilities in real time. This could be a bumpy ride, at least in the first year.

Giants legend Eli Manning has QB prospect ‘under (his) wing’ — and he loves New York
The Giants will likely take a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, but who? That’s anybody’s guess.
The leading candidate seems to be Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders if he’s available at No. 3. If he’s not, then perhaps the Giants should consider waiting until the second round, where Mississippi quarterback Jaxson Dart is likely to be available.
Giants legend Eli Manning, who also played for Ole Miss, has already admitted he likes Dart to The New York Post last week.
“I’ve been around him and [he’s] been a great kid, been in the same offense for three years and been successful,” Manning said. “Seen him grow and progress and seems to be able to make all the throws.’’
BUY GIANTS TICKETS: STUBHUB, VIVID SEATS, TICKETMASTER
But their connection runs deeper than the university they played for.
Aside from attending the Manning Passing Academy, where he rubbed shoulders with Archie Manning and his sons Peyton and Eli, Dart has grown close with the elder Manning, he reveals In a feature by Paul Schwarts of The Post.
“I would say the closest I’ve got was with Archie,” Dart said, via The Post. “Eli has been great with me as well. They reach out to me consistently throughout the season, it’s really every week. They just know so much. They have so much experience, so much wisdom. I’ve been blessed to kind of be under their wing.’’
Dart is currently the No. 6-ranked quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft class, per ESPN NFL draft analyst Jordan Reid. Miami’s Cam Ward is ranked first with Sanders coming in second.
This season, his 4,279 passing yards ranks third among quarterbacks with at least 300 pass attempts. Dart’s 29 touchdowns and six interceptions allowed him to post the best passer rating (180.7) in college football.

President Donald Trump has made it clear he plans to repeal the policies of the Biden administration and assert his own vision for New York. Standing in his way are city and state politicians, who retain their own authority to block Trump’s efforts.
The battle begins with congestion pricing and deportations. “I will TERMINATE Congestion Pricing in my FIRST WEEK back in Office!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social in May. To do so, he will have to get around Gov. Kathy Hochul, who remains committed to the congestion toll.
Trump’s plans for mass deportations in New York City will have to overcome its status as a sanctuary city. “Sanctuary jurisdictions aren’t going to stop what we’re going to do,” Thomas D. Homan, Trump’s new border czar, said in an interview with NewsNation in December.
In recent weeks, tensions have been on the rise between former President Donald Trump and the state of New York. The latest escalation comes as Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. has convened a grand jury to investigate Trump’s business dealings. The grand jury is expected to hear evidence and potentially bring criminal charges against Trump or members of his organization. This move has not gone unnoticed by the former president, who has been vocal in his criticism of the investigation, calling it a “witch hunt” and a politically motivated attack.
Trump, who has long called New York City his home and base of operations, has been at odds with the state’s political establishment for years. From clashes with Governor Andrew Cuomo to legal battles with Attorney General Letitia James, Trump has not shied away from taking on his home state.
As the standoff between Trump and New York continues to escalate, it remains to be seen how this high-stakes confrontation will play out. Will Trump be able to evade legal consequences, or will the long arm of the law finally catch up with him? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for updates as this story unfolds.
